Lavinia Smiley, nee Pearson, (1919 - ) was an artist, writer and photographer. She was the author and illustrator of a number of children's books. She inherited the Castle Fraser estate in Aberdeenshire from her father, the Hon. Clive Pearson, in 1946, and was its last private owner, giving it to the National Trust for Scotland in 1976.
I never get bored of upper-class childhoods from between the wars - the dreamy, eerie and crushingly sad "A Childhood in Scotland" is my favourite, but as we all know, the beginning of "The Pursuit of Love" is probably the best one - F in the chat for the little houseless match.
This was light, funny, short, with a hint of melancholy. Highly strung children being sick 36 times in a row, spelling Theatre as Theater is Absolutely Disgraceful (and to be fair, I tend to agree), and unflattering descriptions of all the author's classmates. (I hope their names were changed!)
