Praise for Winter is for Snow "Neubecker's snow-laden illustrations are crammed with activity while also revealing a certain emotional thawing." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review "Neubecker's signature style and brightly colored illustrations are, as always, childcentered and detailed. This book is about a younger sister convincing an older brother that school can be pretty cool especially when there are hands-on activities! Simultaneously, fall is celebrated as a great season since it coincides with returning to school after the summer break.
Fall Is For School is a fun reminder about the excitement of the beginning of the school year, and all the fun the fall season brings with it. When a young sister's brother isn't as excited about the approaching school year as she is, she tries to ease his reluctance by telling him about all the things she's looking forward to. From colder weather to the the things they learn in school, to playing on the play ground, celebrating Halloween, music, art, sports and so much more. Through her sharing the things she loves about school, her brother's reluctance starts to disappear.
I liked how the sister went about trying to ease her older brother's fears in going back to school. I get why he was sad about summer vacation ending, and loved the enthusiasm the young girl had with the beginning of the school year, and the excitement of the approaching fall season. As she tries to ease his fears by getting him excited about school and fall, including celebrating Halloween, he slowly starts to realize there are a lot of things to enjoy, and be excited about. I liked how the author showed the different interests and learning abilities the brother and sister have.
This is a cute story, and perfect for those who are a little reluctant to go back to school. With some rhyming scattered through the book, and diversity illustrated through out the story, a lot of young readers will be able to identify with this book. Definitely worth reading for those with back to school jitters.
This book is a picture book that uses illustration heavily to give a bigger picture to the story. The illustrations are all done in a very warm tone which shows the child autumn vibes and colors. This book is a more mature read and I would suggest it for children ages 4-7. This is when most children are starting school and this book will help excite them for school and see it as a normal activity compared to being anxious. The colors and pictures in this book help hold the child's attention and also is very relatable, and they can apply the story to themselves.
A tale of summer's end, Shared in rhyme and meter; That reminds us all, Interest in school can peter. From child to child, Different levels are seen; Many times over, I'm not being mean!
It's a simple statement, A matter of fact; Not everyone learns With the same tact(ics). That's why we consider, The subjects at hand; And remind little learners, They're numerous like sand.
A back to school but that is an ode to fall and all the things you learn. A sister is trying to convince her brother that it is good to be going back.
With kids around me starting back to school in mid-August the Fall piece doesn't fit as well as it used to. I also wish they mention of Halloween and the jack-o-lanterns were left out as not all kids celebrate this holiday and it really wasn't necessary to the story.
The illustrations really make this story celebrating the joys of learning. Young readers are encouraged not to be fearful of the new school year, as a boy is slowly convinced by his younger sister that school is more fun than he had previously thought.
Although, these days, kids who get summer breaks normally go back to school in the middle of August, not after the leaves have changed and people are donning their coats, as depicted in this book.
The little boy in this story is not very excited to go back to school. His sister tries to tell him about all the exciting things to see and learn. The illustrations are bright and colorful, and I enjoy reading about all the things he could be learning. But the first half of the text felt flat and preachy. "Fall is here it's time for School" Sure we need to get kids excited about school and lima beans and going to bed, but I've seen it done better.
OK. Not great, some of the word choices are things that I don't really think work well. I think it was a lot of well I just need to find a rhyme that will fit here. As someone with a child who is very school avoidant, I was hoping this would be useful, but after reading it myself, I don't think it would really encourage my son to want to go to school.
Reluctant learners might be inspired to go to school because of the rhyming way this book is presented. There are descriptions of things that might be learned in school and things that typically take place in the fall.
A little busy for my taste, and the rhymes are a bit stilted in places, but there's good diversity represented in the children and teachers along with a lot of content to consider in a light-hearted way. Nice for back-to-school months.
A sister tries to convince her brother that school is most definitely more fun than staying at home in the fall. This book would appeal to those in the elementary grades at school.
Clever book jacket and the illustrations are full of colorful things to look at.
It's back to school time, and sibling brother and sister couldn't be more different. Sister is excited (and preachy) about school. Brother is reluctant (but eventually sees the value in going back to school). Read it carefully, because the rhyme is a little off.
Enthusiasm for school is good, and reminding kids what cool things get studied may be a way of inspiring it, but the rhyme scheme and the story arc are kind of insipid. Not terrible, but disappointing.
It's about a younger sister convincing an older brother that school is awesome and he saying it is not and doesn't want to go. I think it would have worked better if the older brother or sister convinced their younger sibling it was cool.
I really loved the illustrations from this book, but the words were a bit of a letdown. I would give it 4 stars for illustration, and 2 stars for writing.
The illustrations are nice & the story is a good idea, but I just couldn’t get passed the clunky rhyming and it also feels like the book goes on too long (would have benefited from more editing).
My favorite part of this book was when the sister was talking about all the fun things to do in school. I would use this book in my classroom to get students excited about school
