Review: CONDOR IN THE STACKS by James Grady ( Bibliomysteries #28))

The iconic spy known as Condor is adrift in his new enforced position in the subterranean depths of the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. In his new position, he tries to save books instead of sending them for pulling (recycling). He also strives to retrieve his missing memories, fogged by CIA medication.

What. The. Heck. This is the most confusing thing I think I've ever read. Maybe you have to have read the full-length Condor novels to get it. Grady's writing style completely puts me off. I just found it incredibly bizarre.

Condor is back for another adventure. A befuddled Condor is working at the Library of Congress when he stumbles upon a dame in need of rescuing and a plot against the LOC. He manages to stumble his way to victory despite all his handicaps. An interesting short read.

What a story

This story was a wild ride. About half of the time I had idea what was happening, but it drew me in to find out what was what. My only problem was how Condos got into this shape. Just guess that will be a story for another day.

Honestly, I had a bit of hard time keeping up with the narrative, I wasn’t exactly sure what was happening at times. It was quite fun though.

I thought it was OK, but I did get confused sometimes as to what was going on. Always happy to read something that takes place in a library, though!

This novella is part of the Bibliomysteries series, which features short stories all of which have something to do with books. What could be possibly better than that?

This story takes place at the Library of Congress, where the main character has to sort through books and can only choose a few to keep. The rest goes straight into the incinerator. (No one told me this was going to be horror ;) )

Condor, the main character, was completely unknown to me as I never read about him before or watched the movie. Therefore, at times I was a bit confused. The story didn't help solve that problem, because of the length restrictions it also felt like it skipped some things and that made it confusing as well. Moreover, the story wasn't very remarkable. It was an easy and enjoyable read, but not something that will stay with me for long.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Couldn't put it down...didn't want it to end!

Condor is back in the stacks, this time at the Library of Congress. Assigned to search thru books from closed military bases for classified documents or notes, prior to disposal, the reluctant, but ever observant, Condor uncovers a puzzling discrepancy in the delivery/disposal records. He also meets a terrified LOC staffer who is being stalked on the job and feels compelled to help find the stalker. From there, the two seemingly unrelated threads become entangled and, once again, we are off on a nail-biting, rollercoaster ride of confusion, conspiracy, sleuthing, and suspense. My only complaint is it's over almost before it begins.

Condor first appeared in book and movie in the 70's. Apparently he has a been in a few books since. Here he is just out of a mental hospital and is given a low level job at the Library of Congress. Of course his investigative skills are needed, and are still there. Condor sees literary figures in the stacks, and there are other references and quotes. A large part of the fun is these references. This short novella is part of the Bibliomysteries from Mysterious Press. I will be re-reading to to identify more of the references. Highly recommended.

This is a decidedly odd story, not a bad one but definitely a strange one in which it is never certain what is real and what isn't. The resolution to the mystery pondered by the lead character is equally uncertain, and veers into action/thriller territory, with what can only be described as a most bizarre ending.
