Luke Matthews is an ordinary freshmen in college living in the sleepy midwestern town of Cedar Creek. He spends his days going to school and working, at least until an incident one evening brings to light near impossible healing abilities. Luke is suddenly thrust into a world of magic, monsters, myths, and legends. To help make sense of this new power within him, Luke travels to Netherfall Academy and learns that he is a Magician, someone that is capable of manipulating the magic that flows through the very fabric of reality. If Luke wants to survive, he’ll not only have to learn to control his newfound abilities but also plunge himself head first into a dangerous new world. Community college was so much easier.
This book is about a young man who come from a broken home and has to fend for himself but at the age of eighteen finds out that he has magic abilities in order to learn how to control his new found power's he goes to a magic academy .
This is a very good urban legend series I really like this main character I love the side characters too especially Angles family and can we talk about that club scene I can we talk . Funny sweet smoking hot dang I know that Luke is really into Alec but come on Tyler is hot too but you know the heart wants what heart wants . Let's not forget Angle best friend ever his character is just perfect I hope he finally confesses to the person he really likes . I mean he pushes Like all the time but when it comes to himself he can tell the person he likes that does you gotta do better Angle . Anyway this is turning out to be a great series can't wait for the next book .
It was good, light and fun read. I mean close to Harry Potter like how the tight three group of friends are formed and how the girl is called Emma (I mean hello -watson?) and how The Lady of Light has a Voldemort vibe. I don’t mind these and in fact I enjoyed them - one thing in particular is the representation of diverse sexuality with Luke (this books Harry) being gay and a couple of main characters being bi or at least curious. It added a element the HP series didn’t have and I suppose I liked this book as much I did because of these things - so think new aged Harry Potter and if that tingles your dingle then you are gonna love this book.
Awakening is like the more adult, spiritual successor to Matt's Guardian Chronicles series. Having read both, the feeling is similar and so is the concept, yet both series are executed very differently.
We learn about the magicians and different magics in this world. We're told that vampires, werewolves, demons, and fairies exist, though we don't see them. There are also different realms, including dark realms where the demons come from, and the fairy realm. Since Luke is still in training, the focus of the book is magic. I'm hoping that the characters will meet different creatures and go to the different realms in future books.
There are a lot of characters in Netherfall. Some are very much in the forefront while others are introduced briefly, hinting that they will be more prominent later on. So far my favourite is Angel, who is laid back, easy going, and has a serious case of foot-in-mouth. The others range from amusing, to interesting, to a bit bland.
My only real complaint is that nothing was really solved or wrapped up. This is a series, yes, but even in a series like Kate Daniels or Kara Gillian, there is always a conflict that is introduced and solved within that one book. The big climax here is where Luke and his friends fight the Lady of Light, who I think is the main antagonist for the series, yet they don't defeat or unmask her. The sense of accomplishment that our heroes, and by extension, us readers, feel is missing. Other than that, I very much enjoyed this and look forward to the next.
