In the aftermath of a terrifying revelation on the roof in Redborough, Shawn Thorton hovers near death. His adoptive brother Jaxon, still reeling from his role in the massacre, is torn between his need for vengeance and his desire to protect Shawn. While the criminals they swore to fight escape into the night, Jaxon is confronted by a group of strangers who already know his secrets. Duncan Breckner has the answers Jaxon seeks. While Shawn struggles to recover from his wounds, Duncan reveals their forgotten past. Their mysterious powers are the result of a government experiment gone horribly wrong, and they aren’t the only ones with superhuman abilities. The story of Lab 14 unfolds, and Jaxon learns he wasn’t the only one in the family keeping secrets. His own father hid a devastating truth, and that betrayal threatens the tenuous hold Jaxon has on his dark gift. As lie after lie is revealed, Jaxon struggles against the shadows in his heart. And if those shadows break free, even Grim himself may be powerless against the wrath of his brother’s revenge. Return to the dark world of superheroes and crime lords. New allies are made, and new enemies arise in the thrilling sequel to Grim Ambition.
As much as I liked the first one, I think I loved the second book in this trilogy even more. It was great to get to learn more about Shawn and Jaxon's background, and I SERIOUSLY need to read the third one as soon as possible.
I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I read the first book, also as an ARC, and I was interested in the story but I must admit that it was not one of my favorites. So, it was with a bit of trepidation that I began this one.
The story takes up exactly where the previous book stopped. But with a twist. The book moves consistently from the present to the past, and when the change happens, the POV moves from third to first, and this is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. It throws me off each time that the change happens, and it takes a few minutes to get back into the rhythm of the story. I will say, though, that both sides of the story are much more intriguing than the first book.
The story brings up a really interesting idea- what creates a monster, and how easy is it to become one? And if you are, can you change?
I think I will have to read the third book in the trilogy just to see what happens next.
What just happened & when do I find out what's happening next?! This installation is a total emotional roller coaster that keeps you on the edge of your seat & your head spinning (yes, even in a BOOK). I can't wait to see what's in store for the characters in the next book... Ahhh!!!
Holy handgrenade!! This book will have you in awe. The fact there are more like Shawn and Jax. How we watch morals change and alliances shift. Then the decent of Jaxpn into madness that would put Alex to shame. This is definitely a lot to take in and enjoy every minute of it.
