Fire from the Sky #2

Brotherhood of Fire

Rate this book
Post-Apocalyptic Fiction By the most ludicrous of means, Clay Sanders had a warning that something was going to happen to the world. Clay prepared for the worst, but preparing doesn't mean everything is going to be okay. Clay has faced the worst of humanity in all parts of the world, but now he is faced with something much worse…his family. Clay prepared as best he could, but now the world has actually come apart and things aren't going as he had hoped. He planned for his family to shelter in place at their farm and ride out the worst of the disaster but he and his friends must adapt quickly and make a new plan on the fly. Faced with armed gangs and a leader who shocks them all, how will things play out for Clay and the others when his own family members can't remember the plan? EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER ONE Mitchell Nolan was on watch. Most everyone else had bedded down once the excitement of the fire had waned. A long day of work and worry tended to leave people tired so it hadn't taken long. Now Mitchell was roaming the farm on occasion, using night vision gear to get around and avoid light. He looked at the skeleton of the tower being constructed behind the Sanders' home, the parent's home he amended to himself, and wished it were finished. Rising above the nearest trees by a good ten feet, it would allow whoever sat there to see a good ways. Armed with a good scope it would be easy to keep a keen watch on things and to see anyone approaching the farm. With someone in the cupola at the other collection of buildings, that would pretty much cover everyth- His thoughts crashed to a halt as he realized someone was approaching the farm. The glow of headlights was easing up the road from the direction of the Interstate and Jordan. Checking his rifle, Nolan moved to a position where he could observe the road and still have some cover. A hundred questions ran through his mind even as he checked his surroundings to make sure he wasn't taken by surprise. Who was this? What kind of car was it to still be running? The whiz kids had told them that cars made before computers had become common place would still function, but how many of those were there on the road? And what were the odds that one of them would be coming down this back country road in the wee hours of the morning? “Thug,” he heard in his ear. “How copy?” Tandi Maseo's voice was calm, quiet and clear. “I got 'em,” he replied softly. “Can you make out what it is?” he asked. Sitting in the cupola at the other farm, Tandi had a better view than Nolan might. “Negative,” Maseo replied. “I do only see one vehicle.” “Only one using lights,” Nolan reminded him. “True that,” Maseo agreed. “Play?” “We wait and see if they stop,” Nolan replied. “If they do I'll approach. If they pass I'll try and get a description. Bossman might recognize the car if we do. Speaking of which you may want to rouse Big Bear and let him know the score. He may want to call Bossman over this regardless.” “Roger that.” Nolan watched as the lights grew closer, wishing it was light. The glow of the fire in Peabody, at least they thought it was Peabody, was still clearly visible even now, hours after they had first seen it. To see the first vehicle on this road in a week the same night, or at least the early morning after, couldn't be a coincidence he didn't care what anyone thought. Not that he knew yet what anyone thought. “Big Bear on the way,” Maseo's voice informed him. “Roger that.” Nolan had tensed as the vehicle in question came into view, or at least its lights did, and it slowed. Slowing was bad.

This series is a guilty pleasure of mine; the writing isn't the best, it can get repetitive at times and there are a lot of typos, but it's a good story. The second volume still has some issues, but the number of cringey scenes are down a bit.

Amazing!

This is the second book in the series and I'm sooo hooked! I can't wAit for the next book. Please, please hurry up and finish it!! And btw, I love the vernacular and "real speak". I mean come on...most folks do Not speak proper English. This is real conversational 'American' and I love it.

Another Awesome Read ! The story unfolds at a comfortable pace with all the great characters. I really love the twins and the knowledge they soak up. Really liked the "Warriors Funeral".
I'm really looking forward to the next book.

THIS SERIES JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER WITH EACH ADDITIONAL BOOK!

Fire From the Sky: Brotherhood of Fire by N.C. Reed is a very enjoyable, well written, interesting, thrilling, and just about every positive adjective there is. If you enjoy a book of family, love ones, friends, and neighbors that band together for their survival and the survival of those to come to be part of their community on a family farm that brought them together in the preparation and aftereffects of a solar flare causing the end of the world as we know it now, bring them not far from what it would have been like living in the mid eighteenth century, this book is for you. The characters are well defined and you'll find yourself feeling you are right their with them as they face the stress and hardships from everything from building their lives, relationships, and family conflicts, to people that are not part of their group trying to take or demand what they have as well as trying to place some of those into slavery or outright killing them just for what they have. I have really enjoyed the first two books in this series and will be starting the third book shortly. I hope you will enjoy this series also.

I rather like this series (this being the second book). The characters are not terribly complex and don't have a lot of growth, but they do represent various personality types you would see in the apocalypse: the stern, strong fighter, the community builder, the young person learning to adjust to the new life, the person incapable of accepting their actions or the current situation. There are periods of a lot of action and then a lull but still enjoyable.
By the way, would have been a bit easier on the readers if the books were designated as book 1, book 2 etc.

Well developed characters ,we'll written

I actually did not realize this was the second book in the series (although that explains a few things) I was able to become deeply invested in the characters,we'll thought out story line, not too much jargon, but not too simple either. I have read hundreds of books in this genre,dystopian,post-apocalyptic, teotwawki, etc. I also enjoy the classics, non-fiction, mysteries and thrillers.i often am frustrated at the poorly developed characters, lack of grammar, overuse or lack of commas, the use of spell checker instead of an editor or at least a college student majoring in English. I truly enjoyed this novel. I was not tormented with a series of 70-120 pages novels that should have been combined to be one book. I average a hundred words a minute when reading classics, with comprehension and recall, therefore I am eternally frustrated with 50-100 page books, they are not novels but short stories or novellas or worse ,an author is trying to earn more by putting out a series of short stories, rather than one exceptional book. I applaud this author for not falling into this trap. There is one exception to what I mentioned,an author who states his books are meant to be read in an hour or two. Anyway, this is rambling on,but it has enjoyable well developed characters, they are not perfect, the hero is a flawed hero,he makes mistakes and isn't always likeable, the same could be said for some of the protagonists, they can be hated, but have good qualities as well.

Another Great Book….

….but with a really expanded cast of characters. If you are reading this review because you have read the first one, and are thinking of reading this one, before you do, get a “cheat sheet” and list all of the folks in Vol. 1 and their relationships. Trust me. As happens in many of these books the group eventually realizes that, at the very least, they don’t have enough people to guard the property 24/7. So they add people.
In this story, they add A LOT of people. I still can’t keep most of them straight.
It’s not really a problem, but the list of characters really does help.
Meanwhile, the story and the character development is spot-on. There are a couple of. serious confrontations with groups from neighboring towns — that’s just to be expected.
What’s a bit different is characters that are flawed in geniune ways — again, like they are real people. It is quite rare and fascinating to read. Author Reed is very very good. I am going on to #3
Sincerely,

The writer has skill. That is the only thing that saves this from a one star rating. Unfortunately this book is also highly misogynistic and reactionary. And the protagonist comes of as a right-wing snowflake constantly being hurt by mean straw(wo)men.
For a while I wondered about the characters complaints about government and communism. Since they then recreate a communist society under a benevolent dictator I thought that perhaps this would lead to some kind of realizations of the flaws in the characters views. Alas this was not to be. The characters main problem seems to be who is on top of the dung heap, and as long as they are, a communist dictatorship is fine (as long as it isn't labeled that).
If you are more than a bit to the right of center in your political views I think you will enjoy this book. After all the author is as I said skilled. Otherwise I would advise against reading it.

Incredible series

I started this series some time ago, dont remember why I stopped! I stumbled into the followon series about Parno. Fascinated by it. I wondered how it all came about, then remembered these books, and started all over again.

Mr Reed, no relation, has put together a shitpot of great books. While there are miniscule errors (just for grammer nazi's), he has written an awesome story covering hundreds of years. All after a massive solarstorm predicted by a witchman in deep Africa.

No one will ever call the Sanders family perfect, lawful or great public figures. They resemble a clan in deep rural Tennessee. Along with a group of former special forces type soldiers who spent years deeply embedded in shitspots all over the world. Why? Clay Saunders, former Lt who led these men all those years.

Buckle up, lots of action, intrique, strong language and massive heavy violence.
Thank you Mr Reed, great job.

I gave the first novel a 2 stars. This one was slightly better so it gets a three star.

This review is based on the audiobook. The voice acting is still mediocre at best and I still they they should get different people to voice the many characters, not just one guy doing all the voices. Because they all end up sounding like 90 year old men and it makes me cringe when he voices the female characters too. Kinda tales me out of it. And the narrator trying to make the sounds of a female in pain when in labor was absolutely horrid! Or when there's a "group laughter"...it's just his voice doing the same laugh at different times. 🙄

It is possible that the reason I'm only giving a 3 stars is because of the bad voice acting. I'm sure I would enjoyed it more by reading the physical book. That way I can picture the voices in my head and it would sound much more realistic

Another Great Book From Mr Reed

Mr Reed has become one of my favorite authors. Except for his young adult novels, I have read all of his novels. The "Fire From The Sky" series (along with the "Parno" and "Stormcrow") series are particularly enjoyable. Mr Reed does a good job of creating plots and characters that are both believable and entertaining. You find yourself immersed in the plot and identifying with the characters. Can't wait for the next book.

I'm sorry

I said that the author couldn't spell! Now I have to say I am sorry. I read his " forward page and feel the so darn stupid!!? I now understand the wording used and yes I get like I'm there as each family tries to adapt to their new lives. I am amazed at their abilities to turn nothing into a great something. Please join me in a great read and have to wonder if I could survive myself. I doubt if I would be able to do what they are doing.

Great story, please fix the typos

I love the story, and am invested in the characters. It stays engaging and has a great mix of post apoc info, action and interpersonal relationships. However, for some reason all the contractions ending in ll have an extra space, there are missing words here and there, and hyphens where not needed. Please fix these, its distracting from the story.

Great series

Really enjoying this series ups and downs of life without power after a solar flare. There have been a few battles but up to now it's about the day to day struggles of trying to survive in the apocalypse . The group are recruiting more people in an attempt to be able to survive any attack . Not everyone is coping in the New world and it will be interesting to see what happens next

Another great story

The second book is just as good as the first, l really could not put this book down.
The characters are believable and I found myself drawn onto the book more and more, if you like good solid adventure then I can think of no better place to start than this series.
Mr Reed keep up the good work and I hope you can bring the next installment soon

Very good book

I truly enjoy the author's writing. Very refreshing book, actually written the way many folks in the South speak. For ones who look down on that manner, think about it. Is your way different and can 3/4 ths of your country understand your idioms? I am learning a great 👍 deal reading these books. Hope my family will also.

The only thing that stopped me from giving it 5 stars is the unreasonable assumption of socialist views with hints of the ever fearful commie boogeyman.
The writing, plot, and editing are high-quality top shelf. So far the author has avoided the middle of the story doldrums we usually see in most EMP tales.
I am holding out hope that the politics of the series don't degenerate any further.

I must read for lovers of the apocalypse.

Some apocalyptic books I just couldn't read. Too much violence for me. This book is a hard ride but these people retain their humanity. I wish they had been edited better. There are too many repeated words and misused words in various sentences but I can live with it.

Excellent

So unusual to read a post-apocalypse story that gives some details of day to day living. Most of them are just one battle after another with evil gangs. This book series gives a better idea of how life would be.

This series keeps getting better!

Interesting, well developed characters. Good and believable storylines. The only problem I see... I'm unable to get anything done until I finish this series. I believe you will enjoy the books as much as I am!

Awesome community

This group of people rock's. I'm impressed that the author can keep all the characters and their story lines so complete and separate from one another and still make a cohesive plot.
