Joan of Arc comes to mind because I can think of no other strong female heroine who has gone through as much pain, suffering and anguish as Destiny has and still remained strong. She is undefeatable. There is a forthcoming third book in the series so there's hope Destiny will recover from what happened to her in the last few chapters of this book but it's hard to imagine how.
Destiny now thinks of herself as a whore because of what she's done and what was done to her. I prefer to think of her as one of the most talented prostitutes ever, a woman who can connect with any client at any level they desire and give them pleasure such as they’ve never had before. In my mind here’s nothing dirty about providing great pleasure; it's something to be proud of, a great accomplishment.
Destiny Bound is amazing. Ms. Napoli's writing is amazing. I'm in awe. This is truly her master work -- a classic. Yes it's a real roller coaster, containing higher highs and lower lows than any of her other books. Because of that it will become a classic within its genre. The highs make the lows seem even more horrible. The lows make the highs even sweeter. When I read one of the high parts, I was thinking, "Oh Destiny, enjoy this while you can because I know there's going to be very bad times ahead for you -- Giulia told me so in her foreshadowing." Artistic foreshadowing is one of Ms. Napoli's most superb talents. Some writers give too much away in their foreshadowing but she manages to surprise and shock the reader even though she gives them hints of what is to come. My favorite high is ... [no I can't say -- it would be too naughty to spoil the sweetness of it. You must read it for yourself]. Let me just frost the mystery with a line from an old Beatles' song, "Do you believe in a love at first sight? Yes I'm certain that it happens all the time." I found the most horrific low was when Fatina aka Destiny was taken into ... nope, not gonna reveal this spoiler either. I will only say she descended into an unspeakable hell, and not for the first time, but for me the worst. The really gut-wrenching part was ... [another spoiler, sorry].
Ms. Napoli had me hoping for a happy ending, even expecting it -- you will too. Will she snatch it away from you? Sorry, you'll have to read the book to find out.
