He wasn’t the settling down type, he had too much in his life with his businesses and his Ma, he didn’t have the slightest desire to make a woman his, permanently. Why would he when he could take his pick in the club?
He ignores the ache in his chest at the thought of pulling back from her, but decides it’s for the best for them both and his relationship with Liddy and Cam.
My next shift at Honour isn’t until Wednesday, once Cam goes back to working days. When I haven’t heard anything by then, I get the hint that Ben has had his fill.
Going by his behaviour with Lou, who I knew had slept with Ben, he was friendly and respectful, without being too friendly. I wasn’t sure whether I would prefer that he avoided me, to be honest.
‘I have a lot on, with Ma and the clubs. I don’t really have time for this, but I should have spoken to you about it. It was disrespectful to just leave without a word.’ He is standing a few feet away, his hands pushed deep in his trouser pockets.
I had allowed myself to stay at Liddy and Cam’s for almost three weeks after Ben had coolly dismissed me with a politeness that I had never personally experienced from him before, but guessed was the tone that he used to rid himself of the casual woman that refused to take the hint after he had finished fucking them.
The first time I left, I was sad, the second, I was heart-broken. I had believed his declaration of love and for a split second had allowed myself to dream of another life, one where I could trust in love and a happy ending.
I was proved right, love is a weakness, but at the same time, I wouldn’t swap those few months of happiness for anything.
‘You had others?’
‘Queenie,’ his eyes sharpen, with regret. ‘Don’t answer that,’ I quickly reply, ‘I already know.’
