Shifter’s One True Mate #1

Claim the Wolf King

Rate this book
It's a one in a million chance that the sexy-as-sin and savage wolf king finds his fated mate--me, the curvy warrior--on the most hostile alien planet. But you can't call him one lucky bastard.

I can't be his--I've sworn a blood oath to another. And I haven't the time for mating when I have to lead a gang of the worst criminals to fight off the vampire hordes, cannibals, and Akem's creatures of nightmare to find the veiled portal to go home.

The mating call doesn't care for my difficult situation. It affects me with a fever like no other. Its frenzy bursts in my bloodstream, tormenting me with lust more than I can endure. But if I fail to resist it and break my vow, I'll doom not only myself but everyone I protect, and we'll never escape this inferno.

The ruthless, red-blooded wolf king isn't one to listen to reason. And he has no intention of preserving my virtue and honor. He wants to mate with me more than his life is worth, and keep me as his forever. Nothing and no one can stop him on his way to claim me.

Publisher's Note: Claim the Wolf King is a standalone paranormal romance, also a prequel to The Wickedest Witch series. HFN guaranteed. This book contains explicit love scenes, naughty language, the hottest, dominating shifters, and the wicked witch's darkest secrets.

Claim the Wolf King by Meg Xuemei X
Shifter’s One True Mate series #1; Wickedest Witch series .05. Paranormal romance. 1st person.
Kaara is on the disintegrating planet to protect her Princess, even though the Princess has lost her memories. Kaara is the premier fighter of her group, able to win food and equipment for her army. Meeting Marrok at a downed ship is a fight against all takers until he decides to protect her and share the spoils. She makes a deal but didn’t expect the pull and heat of the alpha wolf king. Existing on the planet has gotten a lot more interesting.

Interesting premise and setup. Steamy interludes. Great suspense.
I look forward to the next in the series. I have questions.

Not bad.. not bad. It has been a while since I dove into a book by this author. I honestly couldn't really decide if I should dive into another book of a previous series that I started or just got onto a completely new one.

Long story short, I started a new one. Enter Claim the Wolf King was an okay kind of book. Yes, it was a short shifter romance one and I don't even remember the last one I dove into. The characters were okay and the whole insta-love thing was sort of enjoyable. Yet, I kind of used this for background noise. I didn't mean to but it just happened due to being so focused on the task I was doing - which was creating spreadsheets for a team challenge.

That being said, the whole exiled planet was pretty interesting. This whole place brought these two together when they didn't even think they would find their own mate. It was cute and they had some sexy ass scenes and some chemistry. No idea if I will jump into the next book but if it's another short one I don't see why not.

Pandamonium. A ticking bomb place as, just like Hotel California, those who arrive can never leave. Unfortunately Pandamonium is a ticking bomb as it's only a matter of time before the wold implodes. It's imperative that the inhabitants escape before that happens but so far no one has been able to find the escape portal.

The Wickedest Witch is the only one who has a chance of finding the portal though there are those who don't want her to find that portal, ever. Her general Kaara has pledged a blood oath to protect her though and has despite the odds.

Marrok, wolf king, knows the chances of finding his one and only true mate is slim to none. All that changes when he views Kaara.

* * *

This prequel story has a lot going on. A full reading experience though it had issues for me. I do plan to check out Wicked Witch though I will be reading it.

I listened to this via audible. A good testament that a narrator can make or break a story. IMHO this was the wrong narrator for this story.

The plot outline seemed awesome but it wasn't what I had hoped for. The world building was Ok, but it all felt hopeless, and the h is a Mary Sue, so OTT perfect she was sickening, but she couldn't actually change anything. The H was great, very cool, surprisingly patient for an Alpha but as the story continued he became boring too. It felt as if it was written by a teenager with all the uncertainties of teenage angst. I really wanted to like it but if fell short for me.

This would be a great book for someone who likes shifter, paranormal books. Even though thats not my typical preferred genre I did enjoy this book and look forward to the next. Now what happens with the angel?! The book was short but had lots of detail. Includes shifters, witches, vampires and more all on this exiled planet. Not the place you would think the wolf king would find his mate lol

I’m going to be honest. I picked this book up expecting it to be complete shit. (I mean look at that cover!) But it was December 17th and I’d not yet read an X-authored book for my yearly alphabet challenge, didn’t even have one available to me. So, I grabbed this in a bit of a panic when I saw it. Any X would do at that point.

For about half the book I was happy with it. Pleasantly surprised that, while the sex talk (and actual sex) was just as overwrought and cheesy as you’d expect, the main character was self-possessed and refused to kau tau to the normal cliches of shifter erotica. In fact, I thought the author was making a point to avoid them and was thrilled to find an author who did. But then she (the author) seemed to lose her way.

[Spoiler in this paragraph] Up until about 2/3 through the book, I’d have called it a 3-star read. Then the most cliched of cliched erotica tropes was dropped like a pile of loose shit on the plot. The only female shifter to be included in the book at all turned out to be the violently jealous ex of the hero. She waltzed into the plot and tried to kill the heroine, while claiming she would take the man back. As I said, this is extremely cliched and over-used. But it’s also insulting to women everywhere (as it is almost every time this plot point is used, and pretty much EVERYTIME it’s the only woman of a group). As if we only exist in relation to a man. As if we can’t trust each other. As if we are in constant competition for a man’s attention. As if we have no value if we can’t re-claim it. Right there I dropped a star. Probably would have DNFed the book if it hadn’t been for a challenge.

What’s worse, in this case it went contrary to the world-building too. If finding your fated mate is so big a deal, I don’t believe anyone would think they could step between it. I don’t believe anyone would allow the ridiculous challenge she threw. Plus, after going on and on about how he’d kill anyone who threatened her, the hero just let the woman who literally tried to kill his mate and the man who facilitated it walk away.

Adding to my feeling that the author floundered and didn’t know where to go with the plot, so she took the path most traveled, was the fact that the sex scene after this was full of his dominance and her submission (the heroine had not been the submitting type at all) and described with such violence that I had a hard time envisioning it as sexy and not just painful. In fact, the author even used the phrase ‘the assault of it’ at one point. It seemed to be ranked on how erotic it was by how many times the word ‘cock’ could be used.

All in all, this was almost a good read. I honestly think the author set out to write a strong female character and avoid a lot of the misogynistic bullshit that often hides openly in erotica. But she didn’t seem able to avoid falling into the same pit as so many authors before her. I finished it rolling my eyes (literally) and disappointed.

Felicity Munroe did a fine job with the narration. I have to give her props for getting through those sex scenes without sounding ridiculous.

*I voluntarily read this book. All opinion stated are solely my own and no one else's*

The Wolf King is the prequel in the Wickedest Witch Series and although I haven't read the other books in the series, this one definitely left me intrigued enough to seek out the rest.

Kaara was strong, independent yet feisty whereas, Marrok was fierce, protective yet possessive. These two complemented each other really well. Marrok wasn't a typical alpha - he respected Kaara even if it meant going against his own instincts. I liked how he carefully worked his way into her heart; taking care not to push or overwhelm her and giving her time to come to terms with their forming bond.

I loved how Kaara and Marrok's bond echoed beautifully throughout the entire story.

The world building was excellent and the dangers were described vividly.

A very interesting story, but the heroine wasn’t very likable...

A very interesting story, but the heroine wasn’t very likable, and other than surviving the story didn’t make much sense...
*cue eye roll* The wickedest witch is trapped on this inhospitable crazy planet and we don’t know why,or when she or Kaara will get to leave or what they will go home to....
The whole plot felt odd/off to me, this definitely feels like a series wherethis should just be the beginning and we follow certain characters back to their homes of origin and to where this story takes us in different twists and turns....
Marrok and Kaara and his wolves as they reclaim what’s theirs and Fia reclaiming her throne and world, but I’m not sure I see that kinda arc going here....
What thru my off was the slightly confusing plot ( not telling us enough) and Kaara our h,one reviewer had said she wasn’t very likable, and as far as she was concerned and I completely agree...
What is it with a writers thinking a “strong” woman is one who is an arrogant hard A and a bit of a know it all ,who thinks her way is the only way, lacks self awareness and would rather judge and jump to conclusions than as questions ?
I loved her empathic ability but sadly our h only really seemed to truly understand its use as a weapon, she seemed happier to use it to jump to conclusions about her mate that use it to truly understand him....
Deep sigh, poor Marrok he has w a y more patience than I might have had,if my mate was that arrogant yet clueless about me,our mating and to what he wanted, I think would have grabbed him by the head and knocked a few clues in him....
Seriously Kaara doesn’t want to understand Marrok or his needs or his claim or anything at first, she constantly vacillates between being hit and cold, go away! To where the hell is he,I though he wanted me !
She acts like a spoilt petulant child, the way she acts , I want him! Go away! I thought he wanted me, why isn’t me back yet,I only told to go away last night...
Deep sigh...
Gods, I wanted to strangle her.... what a moody itch,was..
Same reviewer said she was better after she finally accepted Marrok, aaaaaaaaaaaa not really...
Unless the last two chapters count.... when she finally goes to “accept” him just a few chapter from the end she’s still kinda vacillating between being hot and cold, between being filled with a jealous rage wanting to kill any female who’s touched her man and thinking he’s a man whore who’s had too many women and not worth her time ...
Problem by then I not longer cared about her ( definitely her, seriously if not for Marrok I’d have been fine if she’d been killed off) ( while I can’t stand a weak willed, overly nice or doormat like or submissive heroine, you can also keep arrogant, hard A’s ,who lack self awareness and seem to like to be stubborn just for the sake of being stubborn) and Kaara was definitely the last part in spades ...ironically last time I had a h annoy me like this her name was Kiiara odd huh ?
K followed by double vowels ? Odd...
Any way only thing that kept me going was Marrok ( loved him, book would have benefited greatly in my opinion with his p.o.v,a it would have helped the story to get to know him better and saved us from Kaara and her BS! For a while and simple curiosity just wanting to know how story ended...
I can’t recommend this, but if you have KU and love s good Alpha wolf struggling to claim his stubborn mate you might enjoy the ride..
But only if you have KU otherwise you might regret your time ...
Marrok was fun but between this story and glimpses of others I don’t see myself returning to this authors writing ...

Life could be hell when you are forced to fight for it daily on a hostile, wild planet. And Pandemonium is even worse, a hell beyond imagination.
When Kaara followed her destined future queen into exile, she definitely hadn't realized the extent of her suffering. Not in the fights for supplies from crashed ships; but seeing the vacant, unrecognizing look in her former best friend's eyes breaks her heart over again every morning. Athena, now coming with the name Fiammetta, has her memorirs wiped out by curse, only ice and darkness replacing the gentle heart of the Wickedest witch. Kaara vowed to help het queen escape the doomed exile, but she never imagined to meet someone like the wolf king Marrok - fierce, wild, strong, untamed, protective, annoying as hell, and beautiful as several hells.
Hot and steamy story full of action and variety of emotions - the range covering all from the most primitive needs to the noblest feelings. Blooming relationship in the center of survival politics, strategic alliances, and feral fights against common enemies, that is a promise of struggle and fiery determination if it wants to stand a chance of success. Kaara and Marrok are both very strong individuals, stubborn and living their lives according to their own rules, reluctant to bow to anyone... save for her queen, in Kaara's case.
I really enjoyed the story and read it in less than half a day. The only reason I gave four-star rating is that there were parts in the story where I felt like the author repeated herself, and I definitely could live without it. Otherwise, great read.

Ok Im total fangirl for this short story that moves along nicely with a great paced storyline and alot of great explicit love scenes that are spicy.

Marrok, Wolf king, knows the chances of finding his one and only true mate is slim to none. All that changes when he views Warrior Kaara on the battlefield.

Kaara is the general of the Wickedest Witch, her future queen and bestfriend, she went to the Pandemonium world to protect and serve her.

Kaara feels in a world were you only think of surviving and never ever would think its safe to love and have partnership. Kaara find herself been called the mate of the alpha wolf king, Marrok. He is claiming her but she have a blood vow to her queen that she is going to honor. But will she claim him as her mate too?

I really liked how the push and pull between these two, as they are boths alphas in their own right and dont really need answer to anyone. so they need to meet halfway and bend to the others will.
Claim the Wolf King" is a standalone paranormal romance, also a prequel to The Wickedest Witch series. loved it.

I have fallen in love with Meg Xuemei's writing. Marrok and Kaara were fabulously written. Marrok was this sexy, protective, all alpha male that you just wish was yours. Kaara is this furiously independent, strong, amazing fighter of a female character. She is the type you wouldn't mind being. They have fantastic chemistry that is out of this world. The descriptions of the world they are on is superb that you can just imagine them very real. The story is fantastic and I wish that it had more to it at this time. The flow of the story is extraordinary. This is definitely worth reading. I voluntarily review an advanced reader copy of this book.

First time reading from the author.
I thought the story was well written, with a steady pace. I thought the characters were well developed. Some were likable and some were not. I liked the world the author made for the characters. I liked the author input on Paranormal. Witches, Shifters, and Vampires, were mentioned and that pulled me in to wanting to read the story. Very good story indeed. I love shifter books and found the book to be enjoyable and a must add to my favorites. Loved it and hope to read more from the author.

I voluntarily reviewed this ARC book. This is a prequel to the Wickedest Witch series. Great start to the series. Kaara has sworn a blood oath that no one else is aware of. The oath to protect her queen who was exiled for a reason that was hidden to all but the First Seer. Fighting for the life of her queen and herself is a battle every minute but when a scouting mission to get information and food changes Kaara's destiny in the form of a Wolf King Mating Bond, things get more dangerous for everyone. Will the First Seer's prophesy come true and the the lives of those closest to them be spared from the deadly planet?

Surprised in a good way!

I really did like this book. I should've reviewed this book as soon I read it a few months ago but I have no trouble recalling the excitement, suspense, hot steamy romance, some awesome violence with intrigue with a strong Heroine and the wolf who loves her. When I say surprised, I mean this in a good way. It was not your typical paranormal romance and you will want to know what happens next because I know I want to. I will be reading the next one and it's hard to say anything bad about it. Starts out a bit confusing but world building quickly follows to get you up to date. Action scenes are out of this world ( No pun intended)

Way too much going on in this story. Even the author seemed confused about what she wanted it to be. It's almost like "Hey! I want shifters/fae/witches/cannibals/whatever, and just for fun let's put them in space!

We get the Wickedest Witch - Wizard of Oz, Marrock the Alpha Wolf - wonder if Patricia Briggs knows? Etc...

We have our h Kaara - who SHOULD have been a wolf shifter, because she's a bitch. Marrock- who was the only one I liked. He put up with an awful lot, and should have cut her loose. I feel really bad for him getting stuck with Kaara as a mate. By the time she pulls her head out of her ass it was way too late to like her - at all.

This story was just too tiresome for me.

This book is the prequel to Meg's next series "The Wickedest Witch". While this story is used to set up the "world" it also has a love story. Kaara came to Pandemonium to protect Princess Athena Faya/Fiammetta not to find love. Wolf shifter Marrok never expected to find his mate on Pandemonium or that she would be such a prickly "sweet thorn". Now if he can only convince her to give in. I enjoyed this story and am excited for this new series.

The Wolf, The General, The Angel, and The Witch

Kaara Nightshades is the Wickedest Witch's General. She is beautiful, capable, devoted and an all around badass. Marrok, the Wolf King, knows she is his fated mate when he first sees her. Marrok is powerful, protective, and devoted to Kaara. I like the humor, the well written characters, and the messages of loyalty and love. Will the Wickedest Witch have with the Angel what Kaara has with the Wolf King? Will they escape the doomed planet of Pandemonium? I anxiously await the next book.

So there's a planet where a bunch of beings live in exile...vampires, witches, shifters and all manner of alien folk. Kaara travelled there on purpose to protect her princess who remembers nothing about their previous life. Kaara is beginning to lose hope that the prophecy that should be their salvation is never going to happen. Marrok has been leading the shifters for years and when he meets Kaara he recognizes her as his fated mate. He has to deal with the fact that her loyalties are divided and she doesn't necessarily need him. Oh and the planet they're on is probably going to blow up in a few weeks.

This was a pretty good premise, the characters weren't terrible but it just lost me at some point. It was way too long and had way to many characters and way too many storylines.

3 stars...but beware the story rolls over into another series. I guess this is a prequel to the wickedest witch trilogy. The confusing part is if you borrow the book from kindle. It lumps it with another book “leopard princess” but there is no mention that you must read the WW series for the rest of the story. Which you don’t really get because at the end the go off on their own to take back his birthright, but who knows how that ends. I understand how authors like to spin off their stories, but this was a disappointment for me.

it had some funny parts however the author could really use some serious editing.. there was too much going on and too many separate storylines that were unfinished.. between witches/witches guard/shifters/demons/furies/vampires and aliens.. she basically threw everything but the kitchen sink in one book.. the forced it to flow around the main characters. I thought I would give this author a chance because I love paranormal romance but this was a mess.. it was irritating and but I was trying not to add yet another book to my did not finish list. Good thing I listened to this for free.

Claim the Wolf King was unlike anything I've read in a long time. At first I thought, in the first few pages anyway, that this wouldn't be the kind of book I wanted to read. But giving it a chance I found I was totally wrong about this book. Sexy, intriguing, with dangerous creatures and a dangerous situation, and even a few laughs here and there is read without stopping. Can't wait to see what happens next. This was my first book by this author and I loved it. Great storyline that captivated me right from the beginning. Simply awesome. This book seamlessly blends alien, sci-fi, paranormal, fantasy, and romance into an awesome action filled story. I would never have thought it was possible to blend all these genres together so coherently. I couldn't put this book down! I love Kaara as a strong, kick-butt heroine and Marrock is a quintessential, drool-worthy alpha male. All I can say is more please!!

My favorite part of the book was the scene in the bar. I like the dystopian setting of being stranded/banished on a planet that rejects all technology as soon as you crash land. Then you have to deal with vampires, wolves, wraiths and a black witch who can’t remember past a day and her head of the guard who is a bad azz chick. Finding a one true mate was a fluke in this weird setting and that is why I liked it.

Kaara and Marrok

This was a good book but the ending seemed unfinished and rushed. I like the main characters, they make a great team and couple. I love how fearless Kaara is and how protective Marrok is over her. Look what he didn't to the vampire that bit her. Kaara ain't no better tho cause look what she did to Marrok's ex. I look forward to reading more of Meg Xuemei X's books.💗💗

I freakin loved this book!! I love paranormal and sci-fi, but to find them together in ONE book is fantastic! The author has created a world of witches, vampires, shape shifters, aliens and blended it so seemlessly with sci fi, that you can't help but be sucked into this book. Cannot wait to read more from this author!

I was intrigued by this sci-fi adventure. Pandemonium is a planet filled with vampires, cannibals, furies, and wolf shifters. It drains the power of any ship that finds its way onto the planet. Kaara Nightshades is the general of Fiammetta's army. The two women have a history together, one that goes far back, and Fia can't remember it. There's a forgotten blood oath, and lots of action packed into this entertaining read. And Marrok and Kaara are super steamy together. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book.
