Maria Edgeworth was an Anglo-Irish gentry-woman, a daughter of Richard Lovell Edgeworth, born in Oxfordshire and later resettling in County Longford. She eventually took over the management of her father's estate in Ireland and dedicated herself to writing novels that encouraged the kind treatment of Irish tenants and the poor by their landlords.
The first 300 pages or so are poems only, and while many of them were good, it was a bit too much for me who's not very into poetry. The rest consists of shorter fiction by a selection of good authors, and also A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in full. A very good selection in my opinion, but maybe mostly suitable for those especially interested in Irish literature and poetry. 3.5 stars.
It’s kind of hard to rate because there were so many different things in here but I did like the broad range of authors, topics and time periods. Some of the stories I enjoyed more than others, but I did enjoy reading this as a whole.
An engaging series of poems and short stories by Irish authors including Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde, and James Joyce. Standouts include The Banshee by by John Todhunter, Dracula’s Guest by Stoker, and Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost.
