So I remembered reading this with my dad when I was like, 6 years old or so. Now I have this mini in my collection and didn’t fully remember the story so thought it would be a good read since I’m excited for Venom’s upcoming movie.
What’s it about? Venom is trying to save a guy who gets into some gang stuff he doesn’t want to be involved in. Punisher is trying to shoot criminals (duh). They cross paths, a gang war erupts and things don’t go so well.
Pros: The story is interesting. Is it something particularly deep and meaningful? No. Is it a fun story that will probably please people looking for a fun and exciting superhero comic? Yes. The art is cool. I know some people talk shit about old comic book art but I don’t get why, a lot of the stuff in this comic looks really cool. The colorist really helped make it pop in this comic. Lots of fantastic panels! So, the characters. Venom is my favorite Spider-Man villain though in this he’s an anti-hero and it works very well. Punisher is my favorite Marvel character (tied with Deadpool) so of course he’s bad-ass. There’s a villain that I’m not gonna talk about much because he’s pretty much a spoiler himself but he’s a great villain. The action scenes are pretty awesome and they also make up most of this book making the book as a whole awesome!
Why not 5 stars? As fun as it is, it is pretty predictable. I know it is just a little fun action comic but still, even some of them can be unpredictable at times.
Overall: This is a good comic. If you want a deep, meaningful masterpiece that will make you think about our world and change your life including how you view comics from now on... look somewhere else. If you want a fun comic that involves a bunch of cool shit including 2 of Marvel’s best characters then yeah, I’d recommend it.
Don't think you'd have to read Lethal Protector before this one to know what's happening, but it'd be good if you checked it out, cuz it's worth it too!
Review: Venom: Funeral Pyre (1993) Issues #1 -3 Our favorite symbiotic hypocrite storms Oakland's gang-war tempest in their crusade to "protect the innocents." Venom is spectacularly vibe-checked by fellow moral-high-ground-holder, Punisher.
In terms of storytelling, the two anti-heroes are complimentary, both possessing strong egos and a distorted by any means necessary sense of justice. In practice, they clash, with Castle's rigid absolutism vs. Brock's vague pragmatism in approaching crime. Castle believes that all criminals are irredeemably bad and punishes them lethally as a matter of principle, often viewing the law as either insufficient or irrelevant. He sees Venom's more nuanced yet random or unpredictable approach, expressing occasional mercy and considering greater context, as a flaw for not following an absolute code.
