Some solid, basic advice that seems well founded. My only problem was that some of the perspectives and suggestions seemed borderline manipulative, and I wasn't comfortable with that standpoint.
As a bit of a loner it always puzzled me hpw people interacted with one another, and being a loner I was and am mostly still very introverted so I am always analyzing myslef and everything around me and it dawned on me that you're ability to interact with people around you and people that you may not know yet is vital to your future and fortune.
After studying communication through various books but mostly unspoken communication such as tones, body language and the like I was still a bit shacky on the actual interactions part, I have to say that this book is brilliant at hoghlighting the negative points that you might not even know you have and he explains in a simple easy to understand way to help yourself remedy these negative habits.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone that is having a problem with communicating with the people that they surround themselves with or interacting with new people that you do not know yet.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and please have a good day further.
And to Patrick thank you for taking the time to write this book for those who need it out there
Some insightful tidbits, but overall pretty formulaic and dry.
For conversational topics, the acronym FORD is useful to have on hand: FORD - family, occupation, recreation, dreams.
I also appreciated his reference again to active listening. If I can get active listening into my brain more and more, I will be a better communicator.
Overall, not life changing, but useful and a fine book club read.
An Ok book. Almost like in a bullet format of high yield stuff, most of which is common sense. However, knowing that common sense is not common, it is a nice read for those trying to figure out why they run into the same problems over an over again and why they fail to establish meaningful connections with people.
There is always room for improvement and this book is a great example of that. No matter what you think your people skills are like there’s likely to be a nugget or two in this book which will make them even better.
I loved this book. It is short but very well written and researched. It definitively changed my way of seeing life, I learned a lot of things regarding human relations, a topic that is problematic for me.
Thank you, I found this book to be informative and easily to follow with practical suggestions. I am now on to the next book: Chatter Small Talk, Charisma, and How to Talk to Anyone.
Simple read and simple message. While I appreciate that there is not a lot of fluff it seemed almost too quick and too simple. Not a lot of ah ha moments! There were some high value insights that are just good reminders and there is value in that.
The writing. Is straight to the point and identify communication problems people may have. And made me realise some of the things I need to work on. It’s a fast and great read.
Good points, but my problem with Hoopla books are that they are too short and therefore can't go into more details or scenarios. Good book to improve oneself but not enough on how to use these skills to work with other people.
This book was so boring. I did not learn a thing or take anything I will apply to my daily life. It was a complete drag to read. Really thought about just stopping 50 pages in. But I forced myself to finish. I suppose if you don’t have common sense this is a good choice ? Not a fan
Thanks for it. I guess it will be useful in our social life. "Skip it, stop it, shut up" - so simple recipe. :) - BUT: ethos, pathos, logos are *not* Latin, but Greek ones. What a pity...
I am listening to the audible version. I mentioned in a prior update he author is a bit in your face about what to do and not to do which may be over the top for some. Overall I found it to be a good read. I found at least 3-5 things I could take from each chapter and put into action. There is a summary chapter at the very end, which I found to be a good resource.
This is a book I will definitely be reading over and over again. It has changed the way I think about social skills and interactions. For those of us who want to fade away into the wallpaper in social events, this book offer many tools to work the crowd and overcome the fear. Definitely one of my top 5 reads for the year.
