3AM - the hour of the artist. Writers write, painters paint, musicians are in the studio. All artists are up at 3AM. Lovers are up as well; because 3AM is the hour at which all guards are let down; when we're at our purest. If you want to get to someone's soul, get them to talk at 3AM... Symphony Stewart is a beautiful girl with a far from beautiful past that she's trying to run away from, but you know what they say about running away from your past, 'it doesn't work because wherever you go, you take yourself with you'; and that's exactly what Symphony does. She takes her problems from Dallas with her to Houston, and without paying any attention, she collides into Kenyatta Kumar, a reckless talking, rude boy from Homestead with a horrid past all his own, a swag all his own, a cocky demeanor all his own; one that makes him see women for what they are, fuck buddies, that is until he meets the gray tornado eyed mean ass that is Symphony. It's their identical souls that push them together and pull them apart in this complicated love story. Is there such a thing as a happily-ever-after for people like them? Can they move past the pain of their pasts for a better future? Maybe. Ask them at 3:AM.
I see a lot of mixed reviews on this book however, I truly enjoyed it! I wasn’t able to predict nor was I prepared for that ending. I am so sorry for anyone who has been waiting the eight years for the follow up to this story because I’m antsy just having to wait until the end of the month. I’m excited to see what the author has come up,m with, hopefully it will be just as good as the first book.
I saw this book advertised in my reading group and I was immediately drawn to the cover and its title. The book starts off with a suspenseful feeling, and my mind thoughts warmed with anticipation, but unfortunately, after 40 or so pages, I didn't see where the plot was going. It never picked up pace. I tried giving it a chance, but I only found myself skipping pages with hopes that I would find something in the middle that would make me want to finish, but it didn't happen. I gave up.
3.5 ⭐️ I found this 7-year-old book to be quite entertaining. There was undoubtedly chemistry between Kenyatta and Symphony, but eventually it seemed like a series of filler chapters. I understood the plot's direction, even though some of the transitions weren't smooth. Since the book ended on a cliffhanger, I didn't give it a 3, but really, it's a seven-year-old book; will there ever be a sequel?
Let me tell you something...this book came highly recommended from my girls in NRG but the minute it was released it was on my 1-click purchase now list because I loved Love Allure! Baby, I started this book at 11pm lastnight and was immediately entranced! I was drawn in, page after page getting deeper into this story and I couldn't stop if someone paid me to. I didn't stop reading until I got to the end! 6:04am and my eyes are burning but I can not wait for part 2. This story was everything! Symphony is my girl, I love her and Harmony! Symphony has been through too much in her young life at the hands of Xavier and I can't wait for King to catch up with him. But the icing on the cake was Kato, I never ever saw that coming! I was holding my breath until the last page! I lived in every page. There is something about Juno I don't quite trust. Symphony and Kenyatta have some deep dark childhoods/past and Mama Kumar told symphony three words she might not ever hear but guess what they came when she least expected them. I'm in awe right now, 3am has me captivated! 5 star, non stop read!
I almost DNF’d this book several times. In the beginning, it felt like I was dropped off in the middle of chaos. The storyline was all over the place, thoughts seemed to be incomplete, the third person transitions were erratic and characters were being unlocked with little background like a video game. It was a train wreck….but like a train wreck, I couldn’t look away. Then midway through the book, it seemed like the author found her footing and gave us one intense read! Whew chile!
I went from hating this book to feeling a multitude of emotions in the matter of few chapters. The characters pissed me off, then broke my heart, then made me fall in love with them. And that plot twist and cliffhanger….let’s just say I’m happy I discovered this book right before the next installment releases.
I have started and stopped so many books lately because they all feel the same. But I'm glad I didn't pass this book up because there weren't any reviews. Miss lady, this was a great books and I can't wait for part 2... there better be a part 2.
I couldn't put this book down! I like how the author had different backgrounds of characters than from the traditional urban fit book. Very good plot although some parts seems a little rushed.
I am only giving this book three stars because it is unfinished. If you are like me and don’t like being left hanging don’t read it or you’ll just be pisses like me. It was released in 2015 ended on a cliffhanger as soon as it finally got really good. The Rand felt rushed and abrupt. The book was pretty long, was good in a lot of places and drawn out in others. But if there was a book 2 to answer a lot of questions I would be willing to give this a four star.
Characters: Symphony is a young women who have had a heard life and bad relationship experience. Now that I know about how she was treated by the ex she is running from I am surprised that she would even be attracted to king Kenyatta. Her personality is sweet and sassy with a slick mouth. But she is extremely fragile. I would love to see her character growth in book two if there ever will be a book two.
Harmony who is Symphony’s older sister is more of a supporting character but then in those moments where the books drags out her story is the main focus which is confusing to me. I like her sister spunk though.
Gia symphony bestie and girlfriend to king right hand man. She is supportive and down for symphony. She has been though a lot too but you wouldn’t have known it until the end. Her character could have been built up more know her past trauma.
Anyway the story is good with the potential to have been great. It still have a chance to redeem itself if there is a book two.
Y’all… this was my first Jai Bree’nae read, and the way it wrecked me? Whew. I can already say with my whole chest—this won’t be my last… once I gather my emotions off the floor!
I read 3:AM with a friend, and thank God she’s three hours ahead of me. That gap gave me just enough space to sit with the story, cry a little, breathe a lot, and text her like, “Sis… what just happened to us?!”
From the moment I cracked this book open, it felt like I was dangling off the edge of something deep—raw and unsteady. Every chapter peeled something back in me. The way the characters carried their emotions—or held them in so tightly it hurt—left my chest tight more times than I can count.
I won’t spoil anything, but please know… this story is everything. Every character had purpose. Every scene mattered. Not once did I feel the need to flip ahead or take a break—I was in it, feeling it all.
The connection between Symphony, Harmony, and Gia? My heart. Their sisterhood felt sacred—unfiltered, loyal, and layered with real-life love and hurt. Then when Zoey stepped in later? My whole heart expanded. That kind of friendship is rare, and seeing it written so beautifully hit something tender in me.
Now Kenyatta… listen. That man’s whole aura? That smooth, throwback ’90s flavor I live for. But underneath the swag, there was so much pain, and I saw it. I felt it. Him and Symphony together? It was like watching two broken pieces trying to become whole—and it tore me up. Symphony carries so much weight, so much unsaid grief, and her need to release it all? Whew. That hit too close.
That saying, “hurt people hurt people”? It echoed through every interaction, and not in a cliché way—but in a raw, real, gut-wrenching truth kind of way.
This book doesn’t sugarcoat a thing. Jai Bree’nae lays it all bare—the trauma, the love, the loss, the need for healing. Her writing is bold, intentional, and so necessary. The language? Striking. The emotion? Unapologetic.
I’m kicking myself for letting this one collect dust on my TBR. 3:AM isn’t just a book—it’s an experience. And that cliffhanger?! I’m counting down the days till June 6th because Book 2 can’t come fast enough.
This book has me so pressed right now because I really don't know what I want to rate it...I feel like I felt all kinds of different ways while reading this because on one hand, I found it extremely juicy, entertaining and engrossed and on the other, it was extremely problematic, overly dramatic and toward the very end, eye-roll inducing.
3:AM follows Symphony, a young and beautiful makeup artist who has just moved to Houston Texas looking for a new start after having a living through an abusive, traumatic and mysterious ordeal in the place she last called home. She moves to Houston with her best friend Gia and is cocooned by the support of both Gia and her older sister Harmony who is a music artist and a pretty well-known name in the H. And then there is Kenyatta, a.k.a King, a.k.a Kingyatta, a.k.a the person in charge. Strong, alluring, enigmatic and dangerous. His and Symphony's troubled pasts cause them to see the world through a very cold, calculated and cynical way, but it also pulls them together. Creating a whirlwind story full of passion, violence, fury, and chaos.
When I started this book, I was immediately annoyed by the fact that the main character and her sisters name was Symphony and Harmony respectively. The book starts with Symphony on her own but immediately jumps to a scene with the both of them and I was SO confused. I remember complaining to my cousin, who actually urged me to go ahead and read this book because its been on my TBR for QUITE some time, that they basically had the same name and how in GODS name was I supposed to follow the story if I couldn't even figure out who I was reading about. That being said, Symphony very quickly and definitively distinguished herself from her sister. Not only in attitude but in demeanor and mentality.
I liked Symphony, I liked that she had a very smart and slick mouth but also backed it up. Especially when it came to Kenyatta. Kenyatta was the King of Houston, hence the a.k.a, and he expected everyone around him, whether he knew them or not, to act a certain way to treat him a certain way and in comes Symphony, this firecracker with an attitude. Not only telling him that she didn't care about who he was or what he did and actually proving so by consistently curving him and being herself around him regardless of how he felt about it...
I also liked King. Even though he was a hustler and the very fact of being in that 'business' is idiotic, he was very smart, calculated, cold, cold-hearted and cold-blooded. But not in a way that turned you off. He was written in a way that made you interested in figuring out what happened to him to make him the way he was. What did he survive to make him so hard both on the exterior and interior, and not in the "The streets make you cold" kind of way that these fake gangsters like to say, but honestly and truly.
For the most part...I liked this book! It was funny and exciting. I liked the characters and their stories. But BOY was it problematic. I'm not even talking about the fact that the characters lived and breathed illegalities and were ruthless and unapologetic killers. But the fact that these characters promoted and sometimes even participated in rape culture, misogyny and abuse. There were some lines and passages that I read and I just had to shake my head because, WOW! I understand completely that there are people in the world who do the things these characters do, say the things they say, believe the things they believe so I can't fault 3:AM for that...But at the same time, I can't be expected to continue to enjoy and root for a character who stands or even orders extremely unacceptable things to happen to others.
Some of the attitudes and positions in this book makes me a little nervous on behalf of some of the young readers I KNOW are reading these books because I definitely was. As a 26-year-old, I know and understand that there were a PLETHORA of things that happened in this book that would NOT be okay in the real world, in a real relationship or situation. But 10 years ago reading this book? I probably wouldn't even have bashed and eye or thought anything was wrong at all. Thankfully, I grew up and now understand that these things AREN'T okay. But I worry about the young girls reading this book who find themselves in the same situations as some of the characters in this book at that young age and don't yet have the experience and knowledge to know that it is NOT okay to accept or perpetuate some of the behavior that occurred.
In addition to me being an old lady and worrying about the kids, 3:AM really fell apart for me towards the end. Things completely stopped making sense, because it was barely making sense to begin with. Random things started happening with the characters that didn't really seem to have any cause, reason or purpose in the story. It stopped feeling like a hood soap opera that I was actually enjoying and turned into a hot mess that scattered and all over the place for no reason. I found myself not reading because I was interested in what was going on with the characters but because I just wanted to see how things were going to turn out, where the chips were going to fall because I really had no idea what was going to happen because it became really convoluted and confusing.
And then that ending....don't even get me started on that ending. The way this book ended, should have been shocking, I believe the intent was for it to be a nail-biting cliffhanger but it just left me aggravated and annoyed. And because the story really started to unravel towards the end, and I kind of lost the care and interest I had in the characters...I really don't care to know what happened at the end of this book which will surely be revealed in the sequel.
*sigh*... I guess I know what I want to rate this now, which is why I decided not to decide on a rating until after I worked through this review and my feelings on this book.
Final Thoughts?: Issa no from me dawg... Rating: 2.75 stars
4.8//It started off slow, but after the first chapter it’s so hard to stop. Always something juicy happening! So much drama and heartbreak but also there is love from platonic to romantic. The book is messy but that’s what makes it good. This was my first urban fiction read and I loved it
I’m glad I read this when she dropped the release for part 2 because I would’ve been tight the way this ended. The ending was so unexpected because I didn’t see that coming at all. Idk if I really care for any of the characters. Maybe Harmony is the most likable in my opinion. Symphony annoyed me. The whole tough girl persona but really weak aggravated me. I’m just really curious of the outcome tbh. I don’t feel like this was bad just more so of wanting to know what’s gonna happen with everyone.
My review in 6 words: sequel me please, 4:am hurry up!
Omg! This book deserves a round of applause, a hand clap of praise, and an award! The book is a thick book but only 12 chapters long, that should tell you right there that it does not lack substance. You will get your money’s worth that’s for sure. The storyline was interesting, engaging, and captivating. The character development was phenomenal. With each chapter, you unravel more and more about the characters. I absolutely love that because regular people have layers and so does the characters in 3:am. It was fun trying to guess the backstory of the characters. But no matter what you guess, you won’t be ready for what is revealed. Speaking of reveals, that ending 😮, talk about a throat punch! We need the clock to strike 4:am ASAP. Sequel us, please!
I knew kato was zoeys man that left!! Omg this book I couldn't get enough I hated king yatta then I felt bad for him then I loved his bossiness... Now I'm rooting for him and Sym again!!! Babbbyyyy that ending tho OMG WHERE IN THE HELL IS BOOK 2 GEESHH!!!!
The ending though, when is part 2 going to be released? This book started out kinda slow to me at first but once I was able to get into it, I was anxious to know what was going to happen next. I thought Symphony was a witch at first but I slowly started to feel sorry for her and wanted to know her story. I loved how Gia and Harmony looked out for her. I was glad when she finally started to feel happiness. Kenyatta was a breed of his own, he had a heavy wall built around his heart and soul. I was happy that he let his feelings out in the end. This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster because you didn't know what to expect.

Girl, woman, ma'am...👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Where do I even start with this book? Let me give you your flowers. This book is great, my love. You wrote this book from the depths of your soul. This story has attached itself to me. The range of emotions within these pages are unmatched. Let me just sit here for a minute with my thoughts and collect myself. Everyone else just read the damn book!!!!
It did not end like that!!! What?! You’ve got to be kidding right? This book was amazing from beginning to cliffhanger and I cannot wait until the next installment!
This was a great book. That's all I can say. The author keep the read with suspense. I hope there will be a sequel. Sorry so short but I don't give spoilers.
It took me two days to read this story as it is emotional, and I had to take a break a few times. The gist of the story: Symphony, Harmony and Gia were sisters and friends who'd had a tough time growing up. Through it all the three remained attached by hearts, familial situations and a bond for life. Symphony had been involved in an abusive relationship until her abuser was sent to prison. Her man was a street boss. Her previous situation hardened her heart to people in general, but especially to men. When she met Kenyatta Kumar, and his crew, she did not know he was the King of Houston Streets. Kenyatta was a Boss, and his street credibility was true... The two took a while to make the love connection. And when a member of his family was caught in the crossfire, Kenyatta turned his back on Symphony and became a savage beast in the streets. This was a rollercoaster ride that ended with a Cliffhanger!!!!!
This book was everything!!!! I have read a lot of books this year alone but believe me when I say this book is the one you want to read NOW!!! This book was so well written the author knew what she was doing when she wrote this book, you just do not want to put it down. I can not wait for part 2 of this book man I wish I would have known that there was a cliffhanger I would have waited on the series to be done I hate waiting on the next book. But for this book I'll wait but it won't be patiently so I need you Ms. Jai Bree'nae to hurry up girl please!!! Great job on the book
5 stars isn't enough to give for this book. OMG JAI DID IT AGAIN! BUT BETTER! The emotions I went through with Sym were real. The secrets, the twists, the turns, THAT ENDING!!! I felt for Kenyatta. He was capable of love, but he didn't know how to show it... until it was too late. I'll admit, I saw that issue with Kato coming. But I didn't see it at the magnitude that it was. Well done, love. Can't wait for 4AM.
I absolutely loved this book. I was all in my feelings it was a true roller coaster ride for me. I was crying, laughing just all in. I love Symphony that’s my nieces name. I love every character in this book. Gia, Harmony, King, hate Zo is going he was crazy as hell, Kato, triple C’s this book is definitely fire. I highly recommend this you won’t want to put it down.
I can't explain how this book had me so caught up in the beginning. I was up all hours at night and couldn't wait to pick it up and read about Kenyatta and Symphony; it was all consuming. Their chemistry was magnetic and scorching to the touch! That oil and water combo was well written. However, and it saddens me to say this, after it seemed as if the hero and heroine were on the same page, the plot took a turn for the worst for me. Now I get why the hero may have not been with the heroine, like apart for some time due to a turning point in the book, but for a book well over 300 pages, there is no way they should have been apart for like over 50% of the plot, like no interaction at all. The chapters go back and forth between the heroine, her sister, and best friend mostly. When do sub characters get more story time than a lead? Felt like a bunch of fillers: I like reading about the day to day of a character...only if it adds to the plot. I felt like most of the book was about Symphony's day to day goings-on and lil of it had to do with plot progression. Even though it's filled with drama it is not cohesive as it should be; if she was sooo close to her sister, the important event that happened, really...she didn't learn that about her sister until the end of the time frame? As the hero and heroine came together in the end finally, it felt off and wasn't a smooth transition into what was transpiring prior. Though it ended on a huge cliffhanger, I think I'll pass on book 2.
Well I finally finished this story and I have to say I've been left wanting. I danced around this story for awhile before I picked it up to read. I read all the reviews and they were stellar. So I dived right in and I have to say for the first four chapters it was an exercise in complete frustration. The lead heroine of this story Symphony was so childish and immature. I get life experiences, but what I don't get is just being rude for no reason and then expecting to be treated a certain way. Also at some point between her sister Harmony and best friend Gia I was looking for some truths, didn't get it. This was really good storytelling and with a lot of heavy subjects and the writer handles them with the right amount attention.(expect with what happens to Harmony and Gia) I love the chemistry between the characters, the story flows so effortlessly anytime the all are in a scene or just a few of them. The writer also gives us a look inside of a man who shaped by his life and comes out on the other side stronger. Kinyatta or King is book boyfriend that you want. He is man enough to tell you is flawed and to let the love of his life go. Overall this was quite the good story it has all the sparkle and fire you want. Now to say that the ending was little crazy is an understatement, it was quite raised voice inducing. Look forward to seeing these characters again and what they make of their lives.
