A year ago, one woman's sacrifice paid off. Her Legion overthrew a tyrant. They fought for freedom and emerged victorious. This woman did not defeat the darkness alone. She did so with the unflinching devotion of two brave men, and, when it was over, she was faced with an impossible choice.
Rebecca Davis is alive and well, while out in the Rebeldom a ghost continues what she started. A man who lives in the shadows, along with a loyal team who serve him willingly.
I am a member of that team - an elite squadron charged with a secret mission. If we fail, it could undo everything Rebecca Davis achieved.
But this is not Rebecca's story. It is mine. My name is Morgan Kelly and my journey begins now.
As the fourth in the series, I had very high expectations of this book. So much so in fact, that I limited my reading time each day and dragged the enjoyment out over almost a week (almost unheard of for me when enjoying a great book!) Melissa has this cruel way with her story telling. I say cruel, in the most flattering way. She sucks you into the depths of the characters souls, churning you around and spitting you out like a piece of discarded gum. Leaving you breathless and begging for more!
Some comments on this book that I feel are worth mentioning:
I was surprised to note that the story was not going to be told from Rebecca or Reed's perspective, and this took a little getting used to. Not because there was anything wrong with Morgan, or that I didn't like her, but that it put a different spin on things and gave me new ways of seeing the other characters. Plus, I adore Rebecca! The one downside is that I feel like I was cheated out of a catch up with an old friend, no criticism of the book, only that I wanted even more. Greedy much?
I loved that we learned more about other characters. Some gave us real insight into who they were, others only small glimpses, perhaps a teaser of characters who will play a larger role in future books?
I honestly don't have any criticisms of the story, the way it was told, the writing style or even spelling or grammar mistakes (even a handful of those can taint a book for me). My only issue was the devastatingly unfair way the book ended. I wanted more answers! I wanted closure! I wanted to continue reading another 400 pages to get clarity on issues I suspected, endings I had predicted and romances I wanted to see come to fruition. The worst part is that there is no book 5 ready and waiting to be downloaded, and I am left to stew with just my vivid imagination while waiting for more....
Don't you hate when a book in a series leaves you hanging and having to wait for the next installment? Me too! That is why I waited for all three books of the Legacy Series to be available before reading them. When The Return (Legacy Book 4) came out, I figured it was a self-contained, "afterward" book. But, no, it starts more of the cliffhanger of the post-apocalyptic world that Melissa Delport created in the Legacy series.
Again, as I wrote in my review of the Legacy series, there is little science in this science fiction book. It is an adventure story, a love story, a tale of people struggling for survival - all of which occurs after WWIII. Fortunately, the characters Melissa Delport creates are interesting and complex enough to make you want to follow along on their adventures.
The Legacy books are told, primarily, from a first person perspective. What is surprising is that in Legacy 4 the story is continued not through the narrative of Rebecca, the original main character, but through that of Morgan, an interesting but slightly side character in the first three books.
We have all of the original characters, a continuation of the original romantic conflict plus a few more added in, and a return to the world shortly after the end of book three. Of course, an apocalyptic story can't be happy ever after so the reader is immediately thrust back into the darkness of a world destroyed and working to rebuild. It shouldn't be a spoiler to readers of the first three books to know that things don't go easily or as planned and new threats emerge.
While there are several strong, important, female characters, I continue to be frustrated that a female author has all of the other women cooking, making beds, and taking side roles and the main female characters are as focused as much on their love lives as saving the world. Sometimes her characters feel less like world saviors and more like Evonavich's Stephanie Plum.
All of that aside, as with the original trilogy, I enjoyed the adventure and couldn't put this book down.
So, so many feelings about this and the cliffhanger ending. This was not the Reed story I was hoping for, but darn it for being good and getting me to feel something almost positive for Morgan.
Morgan is so ugh, she will never be Rebecca...no matter how much she wishes she was.
Getting more of Kwan's story was great. As was getting to see more of Squad Six and seeing more of of the people who shaped Reed into who we know and love.
THE wait is finally over #TeamReed fans as Melissa Delport has stepped back into her wildly addictive and gritty dystopian universe. While Rebecca Davis may have carried the first trilogy with her hero-like qualities, it’s now time for Morgan to take the front seat – and what an epic ride it is!
It has been a year since Rebecca and her legion of warriors helped liberate thousands from the tyrannical rule of a cruel dictator. While the country rebuilds, an elite crew, Six Squad, continues to scour the countryside for survivors.
Morgan was a fiery, unpredictable and untamed character in the previous novels, in this book, the first of her series, you see a different side of her. She has grown up, matured and is easily likeable and relatable. Her one major flaw, but one she simply cannot control, is her growing attraction for Reed, a man whose heart continues to pine for another woman.
While there is a hint at romance, the book remains true to its predecessors and is filled with intense action scenes and nail-biting suspense. The people of FUSA face an unknown and deadly new enemy. They strike without mercy and any death, civilian or mercenary, is a welcome one. It is up to Six Squad and the loyal members of the Legion to infiltrate their defenses and take them down before it’s too late.
When I learnt that Morgan would be the protagonist, I admit to being both apprehensive and intrigued. Her character, in the first trilogy, wasn’t entirely endearing but she was enjoyable to read. In the year since the FUSA was formed, the protagonist has undergone a myriad of changes, she is mature, decisive, more empathetic and she thinks before she acts. What readers are greeted with is an upgraded, endearing character.
If you are a fan of action, with a touch of romance, set in an epic dystopian world, this series is for you.
I was aware when I went into this book that it was the start of a new trilogy in the Legion world. This one is from Morgan’s point of view, but with all the characters I grew to love in the original trilogy.
This continues well from the shock ending of the previous book, and it also ends on a cliffhanger. I love the fact that we have, in this book, something we hadn’t seen before as well as finding out more about how the USA became the country it did in the previous books.
Very good book...up until the ending. I don't like cliffhangers, and this book ends on an unsettled note -- unlike the first three in the series. I can only hope that their is a final book in the series to the up loose ends
