After a haphazard career spent working and travelling around the world, I stumbled into romance writing as a way to fund a PhD. My first book, A Sweeter Prejudice, came out in 1991, and since then I've written a further 59 books, some of which have won awards in the US and the UK. I live in York, a historic city in the north of England, and waste the best part of my days planning trips away or on Facebook and Twitter, both of which mean that I end up writing late into the night. As well as romance, I write 'time slips' as Pamela Hartshorne, and am a freelance project editor and occasional writing tutor.
In May 2013 I will publishing the Jessica Hart Vintage Collection of five of my early books from the 90s. For news of forthcoming books and exclusive offers, do sign up for my newsletter: email jessica@jessicahart.co.uk or come and find me on Facebook.
I dislike misunderstandings which keep our h/H apart. I hate love triangles. I loathe stupid h/H who tell lies and pretend rather than tell the truth and take a risk. Unsurprisingly- I didn’t enjoy this one. Bella had finished with Will her long term boyfriend. Her best friend Josh has a girlfriend and gets engaged to her. Allegedly, he’s always loved Bella for the the 14 years they’ve known each other. But he’s sleeping with Aisling and planning to marry her - until she goes off with her married lover. It leaves Josh looking like a loser and a wimp. And then he discovers he loves Bella who is still pretending she’s in love with Will.
This was so adolescent and unreal and I couldn’t believe in any of it. So disappointing. I hated the fact that there was only a few days between Josh sleeping with his fiancé and him then sleeping with Bella. Tacky. The author is a good writer and thee were some lovely scenes in here - but overall - it simply isn’t my cup of tea.
So, the story is set around Bella and Josh, who consider themselves best friends, they have known each other over 10 years and never once had any romantic feelings towards one another. The story begins with Bella feeling lonely and emotional, not only have her two best (girl) friends recently got married leaving her alone in the house once they all once shared, she has also realised that her latest relationship is going nowhere, and Josh is in a relationship with a woman Bella can't stand! As the story progresses, Josh gets engaged to his current girlfriend, just as Bella realises that she is in love with Josh. Josh doesn't really love his new fiancée, he just seems to have been swept along with everything. After his fiancée leaves him for her previous boyfriend he and Bella decide to pretend to be engaged for a business trip to the Seychelles he needs to take. Once there, Josh realises that he is also in love with Bella (and always has been) but neither of them have enough courage to admit this to one another!
This book was a lot more emotional than the previous two in the series, don't get me wrong, Bella is once again a fantastic female character of Jessica Hart's, but this is a much deeper romance. The moments where Bella is heartbroken over Josh's engagement is really emotional, also the misunderstandings between each other also add to both the tension and the romance. I really liked that the story focuses on two people who have been so close for so long realising that they are meant to be, in my opinion one of the most important parts of a relationship is a very strong friendship! You would think that it would be frustrating waiting for the characters to come to their senses but it was actually very sweet, and once again Jessica Hart has written two very good characters!
4 Stars! ~ Imagine discovering one day that your very best friend in the world, the one who’s always been there for you, is actually the man you’ve been looking for all your life, your one and only. One day Bella suddenly opened her eyes and seen Josh the man he’d matured to be, no longer the little bit geeky lanky college student she sat beside fourteen years ago. And he’s getting married to someone else. Josh used to have a huge crush on Bella in college, and over the years he convinced himself that all he needs is for her to always be his best friend. But Bella’s been acting strangely, and all he can figure out is that her heart is broken, she’d just been dumped by her boyfriend, and she had confessed to him that the one man she’d ever love would never be hers. When Josh’s fiancée dumps him, Bella volunteers to a pretend engagement. He needs a fiancée for a trip with prospective clients, and it’s couples only. Now it’s Josh’s turn to be thrown for a loop, because after their first kiss, he can’t stop thinking of Bella in a very un-best friendly way. And all he can remember is how she’ll always be in love with another man.
This is a wonderful story of two best friends who suddenly understand the reason why they’ve never committed to anyone is because they’ve really been saving themselves for each other. There are some very emotional moments when Bella’s heart breaks at the realization that she’s too late; Josh is taken. I liked the way we get to see Josh wake up to his feelings. Of the three in the trilogy, I liked this one the best. Maybe because everyone else could easily see that Josh and Bella were meant to be together, and were just waiting for them to come to their senses. Although each book in the trilogy stand alone, I recommend reading them in order, there are lovely tidbits in the first two that make this last one richer.
I really enjoyed reading this book and it was a nice ending to the series. I think this was my favourite of all the books and possibly the one I was waiting for when I was reading the others and hearing Bella and Josh's stories.
