Dark Arts #3

Soulbound

Rate this book
A dark force is rising in London...

Sebastian Montcalm knows freedom for the first time in his life, but it has come at the cost of his father's soul. If he can learn to harness his uncontrollable sorcery then he might be able to save his father from a demon's grip, but every move he makes leads to failure. The only thing that gives him hope is the innocent touch of Cleo Sinclair, the woman he was forced to marry. But will his darkness drown out her light?

He could be her destruction…

Cleo knew her father only ever loved her for the power of her visions, but when he bartered her away in marriage to a man she'd never met, she realized how little value she truly had. Her husband, Sebastian, was nothing more than a dark warmth in her bed, a stranger who refused to touch her. But together, the two tortured souls found friendship. And now, when he needs her the most, he won't even look at her.

...Or she could be his salvation...

When Cleo receives a powerful vision of a darkness that threatens London, she knows she is the key to defeating it. Only by working together can she and Sebastian prevail. But is Sebastian the one who can end this prophetic doom, or the one bound to begin it?

THIS WAS SOOOOOO GOOOD. This is officially one of my favorite Bec McMaster’s books.

Sebastian and Cleo are the CUTEST. I love that they both helped each other out in their internal struggles. The way Sebastian cares for Cleo is the sweetest thing ever! He values and loves her so much that my heart aches. I love seeing how much their relationship has developed since their first meeting from the first book. I have to say that I was worried about them in the previous books because they were in such a dark, precarious situation. I was not quite sure how they would recover, and my heart would literally break after every mention of Sebastian’s past. However, I am glad to say that this book, more than anything, is about healing and moving forward together. I enjoy seeing Sebastian grow from being a guy who is distrustful and bitter to a guy who loves and lives for his family. He learns to connect with Bishop and Lucien (as well as Verity and Agatha). There are many, many touching scenes in this book, especially pertaining Sebastian’s developing relationships with these people.

On the other hand, there is Cleo. She is such a wonderful, pure soul. I love how she supports Sebastian. However, I also immensely appreciate that she is mentally strong and she respects herself. There are a few instances where Sebastian is being complicated, and she lays it out to him that she is not going to take any shit because she loves herself too much to not expect more from him.

One particular quote gets to me:
"I care for you. You know I do, and I cannot hide my feelings. But my happiness does not depend upon you. With or without you, I will make my own way in this life, though I would like it very much if you were by my side."

She is pretty much perfect in my eyes. I adore that she is both understanding of Sebastian’s situation and independent enough to know that her happiness in life does not depend on one person.

Plot-wise, I am satisfied. I was not sure how they were going to get themselves out of this pickle, but there were certainly interesting plot twists. Also, my curiosity is piqued because McMaster has set up the spin-off series perfectly. I am so excited to learn more about certain characters that were shown in this book.

Anyway, this is a book that thoroughly held my attention from beginning to end. The romance is heart-melting. The characters are lovable. The character developments are stupendous. I give this 4 stars.

I’m so sad that this series is over. This trilogy has been amazing that I wish Bec McMaster has plans to continue the series in a spin-off. If you’re a fan of mysterious, sexy heroes and magic and mayhem, then this series is definitely for you.

There is lots to love with SOULBOUND. First of all, the hero, Sebastian is delicious. I’ve always been a fan of McMaster’s heroes. They are always so alluring and mysterious, giving off that sexy vibe without being too over the top. And although I end up liking all of her heroes, not one is the same as the other, making her books truly something to be admired.

The same goes with her heroines. Cleo has so much interesting characteristics to her that it’s impossible not to be intrigued by her character. I also enjoy the fact that the author takes her time in revealing details of each character, allowing readers to get to know them as if they were real friends. Together, Sebastian and Cleo make a fabulous pair.

And lastly, I have to take a moment to mention the writing. It’s simply amazing. Honestly, I always read this author’s books so quickly because they are just so easy to fall in love with. The writing is eloquent and free-flowing and the worldbulding is never too complex or confusing. There’s really a wonderful balance here. Bec McMaster has quickly become one of my top authors this year and I look forward to reading more of her future books.

Maybe I was expecting too much of Cleo and Sebastian's book...

This was not bad, but I was wanted more. More intelligence from Cleo: she was given many tips that she just couldn't decode; more cleverness from Sebastian: he knows how his mother's and the demon's mind work, but he just chose to ignore that insight!

So they chase their tails here, more worried about the fate of their relationship that the fate of the world. They both do stupid things and hide important information from all who could help them, plunging from one dangerous situation to another!

I understand that Sebastian is an abused child, horribly aboused by his own mother, but Cleo was also aboused by her father, even if not physically. Still Cleo is positive, while Sebastian is destructive.

I must say that I was not awed by this conclusion story. I wanted to know what happened with Drake not that Cleo was offered to time-wander around.

I hope the next book/series will be more ineteresting since it is about Remington Cross! :)

Four and a half
So this is the final book in this trilogy about three estranged brothers in Victorian England where magic and demons exist. We've seen Lucian and Bishop meet the women that will love them but for Sebastian it's never been exactly straightforward. Forced to marry Cleo and prepared to hate her and yet her sweetness and love of life captured more than just Sebastian's imagination unknown to him its also captured his heart.
Sebastian is determined to distance himself from his wife and doesn't really believe that he can ever remain tied to Cleo. Having seen his father sacrifice himself to protect him Sebastian struggles with guilt and shame but his brothers insist he can help stop the demon. Yet having felt chained for so long Sebastian craves freedom and fears the dirt and filth that are a part of him will only contaminate that which he holds so dear, Cleo.
Cleo too knows that time is running out as her powerful visions have all pointed to a reckoning. Finally she is able to see the world as it is and the beautiful man who is her husband sadly in name only. Cleo is determined to be there for Sebastian and pushes him to fight for what they could have. All this whilst learning of some of the demons plans as he torments her with knowledge of another dark player who will assist in his machinations.
This couple have both definitely been abused in different ways and whilst I don't think that Cleo is tortured quite as much as Sebastian they do share a connection that leaps off the page. The author has made Sebastian a man who doesn't trust and actually I don't think he really thought that he was worthy of love. The indomitable spirit that is Cleo has no doubt about Sebastian's worthiness however and pushes him and even calls him out on his behaviour. I loved seeing the quiet little miss stand tall and it really made her feel real because let's face it she deserves a marriage that is whole and not a farce. Yes Cleo is innocent but her love for Sebastian means she wants passion and luckily the author agreed!
My final thoughts are I loved the way the outcome was teased at throughout the book with hints and possibilities for the reader to unravel. No spoilers here as to who or how but it felt like a satisfying outcome and of course the epilogue was just the icing on this literary cake. Plus we do get to meet characters that will clearly reappear in future stories so I'm already itching to get my hands on whatever the author has planned next.

I think the worst thing about hateful parents are those small moments of kindness. For they give you a glimpse of hope. They make you crave it, and you can never understand why they withhold it so frequently.

Phew! This has been a long ride.

I don't know. For a book that I had been eagerly anticipating and all the build up from book 1 and 2, this fell oddly flat.

This was the first book of the trilogy that I got my hands on thinking it would be a stand-alone in a series and I love forced/arranged marriage tropes so nothing stopping me from just diving in, right? Wrong!

It's a part of an actual series which meant devoting time to the other books first. Now, it certainly was no chore but the thing is, I get bored really fast. Not in the sense that it wasn't enjoyable, more like a lacking attention span? Over time, my excitement wanes and I forget why I couldn't wait to get my greedy paws around the book and that just ruins the experience, so much.

Now I'm taking pretty much all the blame for myself but maybe it wasn't just me.

Maybe the writing got tired.

Maybe the couple that I met in book 1, that were just about jumping outta the pages, lost their spark.

Maybe everything got so caught in the build-up it didn't survive the wrap.

I love tortured heroes. There is just something about them. The idea of saving them maybe, whatever. So Sebastian ticked off all the boxes of a tortured soul and so many more and Cleo was this perfect ray of sunshine to save him. But what Bec didn't forget was that, it is through light that shadows are cast. We're all made of grey and have both good and bad days or weeks or eternities . . . and choices.

Choices shape the world.

"How on earth can you look so optimistically on the world, when you know what it's like? You're a fool."

"Maybe. But if I don't have hope the world will turn out to be a better place, then what is the point in going on?"

In terms of lessons and self belief and all that, it was really good. But nothing is sticking to me. I just finished the book and I hate to say this but it wasn't all that remarkable. Other than Sebastian's horrid past, I can pretty much switch this for some other book and it would all still be the same. Cookie cutter.

In a world full of magic and dangerous enemies, three brothers who weren't raised together are part of a prophecy which will determine the fate of London and almost certainly the rest of the world. It's a very quick and basic way to sum up this other amazing series created by Bec McMaster. She does it every time ! Making me dive into an other universe so well-built and root for those complex but fascinating and lovable characters. And the romance is always just as good as the action, with the perfect mix of sensuality, carnality and emotions.

The last book of the trilogy begin with an effective prologue to remind us what happened and what's at stake this time. Even if not necessary to have read the other books before, I think it's best, just for the fact it'll probably be easier to understand Sebastian's shut off attitude.

There's still sorcery and demon but this time it's also about marriage of convenience, chess game and dealing with the wounds of the past. After so many years being tortured and enslaved, the hero is finally free but still have to deal with the aftermaths and think he's broken. That's why he stayed away from the wife he was forced to marry, even if she's the first person to ever treat him with kindness and respect. Buried by pain and desire of revenge from his tormentor, Sebastian will eventually realize that Cleo's patience, understanding and goodness is the key to his own hapiness. His internal dilemma and having to overcome the past to be able to trust again and love probably explain why the pace was slower in the first part of the book, but it was a needed point.

"I don't know what love is," he whispered hoarsely. "You say you want my heart, but you don't know the truth. You have my soul. You've had it from the moment I first saw you, standing there feeding your ducks without a care in the world. You saved me. Time and time again, and I've never wanted anything in my life the way I want you."

And let's not forget about the fact they have to save an other character without it costing their lives. The final battle with the villain kept me on the edge of my seat ! Bec McMaster is a master at her craft ! And an other thing I appreciate about this author is that she always introduce her next characters in other books and I can't wait to read about Remington Cross in her next trilogy !

I’ve been fascinated with Sebastian and Cleo since book two (I haven't read book one yet) and Soulbound did not disappoint. A satisfying plot full of sorcery, intrigue, action, and a great romance...their rough road to love capped off a perfect ending!

I've been DYING to read Sebastian and Cleo's story since the first book... and I'm so happy that their story delivers.

The final book pits our heroes and heroines against the demon that plans to wreck havoc in London and has possessed Drake de Wynter's body. Cleo Montcalm has Vision about the doom of London, and lately she also dreams about a "chess game" in which she is directly involved with either London's survival or fall. Sebastian Montcalm, Cleo's husband is another key player.

I think most of Bec McMaster's heroines are women I admire. Sometimes they even outshine the heroes (which I will honestly admit, not happening very often). Cleo is another of McMaster's shining star. I love her kind soul and the way that she seems to be projecting 'light' in the looming darkness.

However, even if she is definitely the gentler one compared to Verity and Ianthe, it doesn't mean that Cleo doesn't have steely determination. I especially love when she tells her husband that she wants it all, and even if she is hurt if she needs to let Sebastian go but she will not settle for scraps.

Sebastian is a 'common' tortured hero (physically and mentally) -- after practically being a slave of his mother. Sebastian always thinks that he's not worthy of Cleo's love. At times this line of reasoning is repetitive to me. I'm glad when Sebastian finally takes his head out of ass then fight for both Cleo and his new family (half brothers Lucien and Adrian), as well as saving London.

All in all, it is a satisfying conclusion to the series. McMaster hints that there will be another trilogy set in the universe featuring side characters from this book, which I will be expecting gladly.

It's over!! NOOOOO!!! I wanted this book to happen so much because we got to know these characters through 2 other previous books, but I also didn't want it to ever end. Cleo and Sebastian were wonderful together and it follows one of my favorite romance tropes, a marriage of convenience. Both characters are flawed because of their pasts and their lack of love from absent parents, but they both need each other to bring themselves out of their literal and metaphorical darkness.

The overarching story of Sebastian's and his two brother's father being taken over by the demon is hashed out in an epic movie-worthy showdown complete with a sacrificial twist and the introduction of a new character that GETS HIS OWN SPINOFF!!!!! YAY!!! I can't wait to dive into his story and his "sleeping" heroine.

I received any advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review (and I honestly LOVED IT!)

Soulbound is the final book in the Darker Arts trilogy. If you are enjoying this series, you will be thrilled at this stunning ending. However, this is not a standalone. It is definitely a concluding book that brings together three complicated storylines for a satisfying ending.

This series focuses on three brothers who, based on prophesy, will either destroy the world or be its salvation. There is a demon lose in the world and it has taken over the body of The Prime, the leader of the magical realm. Three brothers meet and unite to fight the demon and try to prevent Armageddon. This book focuses on the youngest, and perhaps, the most powerful, Sebastian Montcalm. Under the power of his mother, a very, very bad woman, Sebastian suffers unimaginable degradation and pain growing up. His story taints his attitude toward the woman he is set up to marry. Ironically, he has genuine feelings for Cleo, but finds it difficult to overcome his past trauma to truly give himself to her.

Cleo is not one to wait around. She takes the initiative to try and stop the demon from opening up the veil between this world and the demon realm, with or without Sebastian's help.

This is truly a complex and detail-rich story that made book one difficult and book three a joy. It is imaginative with fantastic world-building. The storyline is intense and the pace keeps the narrative hopping. I am very glad that I stuck with the series because it is one of my favorite Bec McMasters stories to date.

I got an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review :) this is the third and final installment in this phenomenal series, and long story short... I absolutely adored it :) of course I will get into some more details about the awesomeness of this story, and series, in general ;) but it's gonna be tricky, since all the books in it are very connected, and it's one of those series that you have to read in order to understand everything that is happening... :) so I will try and do my best to convince you all to give them a try, without spoiling some important stuff... :) or I will just leave certain spoilers about previous two books for one paragraph, so all of you who are new to it, can just skip that one ;)

So first of all, let me tell you a bit more about the whole series and the world it takes place in general :) it's happening in the first half of the nineteenth century in London, but in an alternate version of our world... with magic :) that's why I'm always saying it's a mix of fantasy and steampunk-ish vibes... and I love it :) well, if we're being totally honest I love all Bec's books, but that's a topic for a whole another discussion, so for now let us come back to my current review :) this is a trilogy where yes, each book concentrates on another couple, but like I mentioned before... they are all very much connected with this bigger story arch that spans all three books, so you have to read them in order, or you won't understand what is happening... yes, there are small reminders about certain events and characters, but it's more to help people who forgot some details because it's been months since they read the previous installments... :) let's just say that I was definitely very glad for them :) number three is also very significant when it comes to the overall story... we have three books, three magical relics and three... well... you'll see when you read the books :) I don't want to spoil you anything but let's just say there is a prophecy... and leave it at that ;) basically three relics are necessary to get rid of a very nasty demon that has some sinister plans for our world... :) now that we have some basic informations out of the way, let me tell you a bit more about this third installment in particular and then get into all the reasons why I loved it :)

First of all, I'm not gonna spoil you anything from this third book in my review... I need to say one thing, that happened between Cleo and Sebastian in the first book, that can be considered a mild spoiler, but on the other hand it's in the synopsis of this story, so make your own decision about reading this next sentence of my review :) I was curious about Sebastian and Cleo ever since I met them back in that first story... especially since they had to get married because of the deal their parents arranged... :) since then I just knew that theirs will be my favourite installment... and I was right :) Sebastian is one of my favourite types of heroes... raised on the wrong side of the conflict... morally grey, tormented by things he did in the past... thinking he doesn't deserve anything good... I just wanted to hug him :) Cleo is another one of those types that I adore in books... kind and strong... much stronger that everyone thinks, including herself ;) I love women like that... :) stories about them always empower me, making me feel like there are still qualities in me that I can discover... :) so after finishing Cleo's book I felt like I could conquer the world :) theirs was a relationship full of this push and pull sort of interactions... there was definitely something more, but Sebastian was resisting that attraction, thinking he will only hurt her... so seeing them finally get together was so lovely... :) usually I'm not a fan of these types of stories, but I knew that I can trust Bec and her magical ability to craft an amazing book ;) yet again... ;)

It was another easily given 5 stars rating... which is not really a surprise anymore, when you take into account the fact, that I recently realized that Bec McMaster is definitely one of my auto-buy authors :) she has several series, all of them different, and yet all of them amazing and wonderful and just... *sighs happily* :) her writing style just *clicks* for me... every story she creates, every character, every world... I swear you guys, they are so different from one another, and yet I can't help but love them all... :) this particular story is a truly phenomenal conclusion to the series... all big questions are answered... the big issues resolved, but... :) and you have no idea how excited I am about it... there will be a spin-off trilogy :) *squeels with excitement* :) revolving around some secondary characters we met in these books, and some new ones... and I am soooooo ready for it... especially since at the end of this story there is a little teaser to show us who will be the main couple.... and after learning that... let's just say I need that book ASAP ;) of course I'm not gonna spoil you that information here... ;) but trust me, it's sooo good... :) this absolute gem of a book is full of so many surprising twists and turns, that it will make you gasp in shock many times... ;) I love that we see so much of the previous couples, as well as some of my favourite secondary characters in this series... all those glimpses just made me want to re-read this whole series again :) so if you haven't already, I highly recommend you guy to read this book, and this whole series in general... :) there's no time better than now, since all three books are available, you can just marathon your way through them... :) *sighs dreamily* I am a little bit jealous that you get to experience the awesomeness of them for the first time ever... :) I honestly hope you will give them a try... and then we can fangirl together ;) happy reading :)

XOXO

This book was really well done.

We not only get to see the resolution of the past two books and defeat the darkness/demon in London, we get to see the goodness grow in Sebastian. He was always a favorite character of mine, from when he was first introduced and seeing him and Cleo turn into these truly lovely characters who are flawed but are able to overcome their past and be the people they needed to be.

It was just an excellent series, as always I recommend Bec McMaster bc she's an amazing author who builds loveable characters with realistic flaws and redemptions.

So I'd been waiting for Sebastian and Cleo's story since book 1 and now that I'm done with it I don't know that it satisfied me.

There's a fair bit of angst in this book. Which, given Sebastian's backstory is totally understandable. The issue for me was the fact that this whole book felt like one looooong therapy session. Dude gets a pep-talk from literally every other "good" character that ever existed in this book. Literally every single one. And sometimes more than one. But despite these talks, Sebastian doesn't ever really seem to grow or learn or evolve as a person.

Yes, yes. I know trauma doesn't go away overnight. But good God, reading about his flashbacks and his self doubts over and over again got boring as hell. I think the trauma is accurately represented. I'm not faulting McMaster for that. But there needed to be a better progression toward acceptance for me. Instead of him flip-flopping between these tiny revelations and his dark angsty doubting moods and ultimately getting nowhere until he gives in and cements the bond between himself and Cleo.

The romance is sweet, but sort of lackluster. By necessity, it obviously had to be a slow burn. So I wasn't expecting a ton of scorching hot spice here. But there's a large chunk of the book where Cleo and Sebastian just...don't talk to each other. And that's annoying.

As for the plot. It's definitely there. But there's also a lot of time spent with people just... sitting around talking about what to do. The story was slower than I wanted it to be, given the 'urgency' of the threat that was presented.

I enjoyed this for what it was, and the conclusion was pretty decent. But I think book 2 was and remains my favorite in this series.

Love the World Building

McMaster concludes the Dark Arts trilogy with Soulbound, and the last of Drake de Wynters son’s Sebastian. All the characters from the previous books are in this concluding book, as Sebastian and his bride Cleo comes together to wage war against the demon Lascher.
This book not only explores the romantic relationship between Cleo and Sebastian, but delves deeper into the abusive past of Sebastian. It also has great moments between the three brothers as they come to terms with each other. Like most of McMaster’s books it is very character driven. The conclusion was good and I was delighted to read that McMaster’s was spinning off from this series.

I just finished Soulbound, it was a good wrap up to the trilogy and a good handling of the final brother Sebastien - his move toward being able to finally handle a little hope was good, a d his herione was surprisingly strong despite her sweetness. The ending leaves room for an upcoming spinoff - both future leads are promising. My only nit with this one was a sex scene shoehorned into the epilog - which would have been stronger without it.

I first found Bec McMaster through her Steampunk London series, a set of enjoyable fantasy romance books featuring vampires, werewolves, and steam-powered machinery set in the class-conscious Regency Era. Soulbound is the third book in her Dark Arts series—more historical fantasy romances, these set in Victorian England, but with a focus on magical spellwork over creatures and class.

The historical aspects of these books are less important than the fantasy and the romance, which is fine by me—the setting just adds a little flavor and some fun fashion. McMaster’s strengths are emotional romance, fantasy world-building, and magic systems.

The Dark Arts series draws on Aleister Crowley-style magick for its overtones. Think hexagrams, grimoires, relics, and demon-summonings. There were sexual undercurrents in the magic system that seemed to go directly against what you would think of as Victorian morés, but it was refreshing to see the leading ladies showing some confidence instead of repression in that aspect of their lives.

In Soulbound, we catch up with Sebastian Montcalm, the youngest of the de Wynter brothers, and the most tortured. His mother had enslaved him with a magical collar in the previous books, making him do terrible things, and he has never been able to use his considerable power under his own control. Essentially, Sebastian is a survivor of both rape and abuse. His mother also forced him to marry Cleo Tremaine in a match of convenience, an alliance that she thought would give her power. When Soulbound opens, Cleo and Sebastian are estranged. Sebastian is finally free of his mother’s power, but he is struggling to come to terms with his new existence—free but traumatized, welcomed yet feared by his newfound family of half-brothers and sorcerers.

Cleo, Sebastian’s wife, is likewise at sea. Her father’s last act was to tear a blindfold from her eyes, a blindfold she had worn since she was a child that she believed allowed her access to her visionary powers. Despite being confused by her new lack of power, what Cleo truly desires is a loving marriage with Sebastian. But he has rejected her repeatedly.

Thus we find the emotional conflict of the romance in Soulbound: a tortured hero terrified of his own emotions and a gentle heroine longing for well-expressed love. Their road to happily-ever-after will reveal many dark secrets about their pasts, and they will have to confront who they are—and who they want to be—in order to find their love.

The plot conflict centers around developments from earlier books: Drake de Wynter, the patriarch and leader of all sorcerers, Sebastian’s estranged father, allowed his body to be possessed by a terrible demon to save his youngest son. Sebastian and his half-brothers have pledged to save their father from the demon. An array of enemies attempt to protect the demon from the brothers, including Sebastian’s evil mother, Morgana.

McMaster cleverly and seamlessly weaves her romantic conflict into the plot conflict of the book—a skill that sets her apart from many other fantasy romance writers. She creates a vivid world full of intriguing details. The plot drew me in, and after the first few chapters I was hooked on Soulbound.

That said, Sebastian and Cleo fell a bit flat for me as characters—I preferred the first two romantic couples in the series. At times McMaster slipped into “telling” the reader what her characters were feeling instead of showing us. Now, don’t get me wrong—I love a good introspective, brooding character, especially a hero—but in this case, the writing tended to get a little loose and could have stood some tightening to develop these characters in a more engaging manner. In general, I think all the books in this series could have stood more forceful editing.

That said, the entire series was a great escape read, the world-building was excellent, the magic system was complicated and interesting, and the plot kept me turning the pages. All in all, a juicy, satisfying read for good entertainment.

Soulbound is the final book in the Dark Arts trilogy which not only completes the love story of Cleo and Sebastian, but brings to an exciting conclusion the battle against the Demon that wants to destroy Drake de Wynter, his family and all of London.

Both Sebastian and Cleo were raised as the pawns of their scheming parents due to their immense natural gifts of magic. Cleo was kept blindfolded and imprisoned by her father since the age of five to ensure he controlled both her “Vision” and position as “Cassandra”, the order’s most powerful seer. Sebastian’s immense raw talent was so envied and feared by his mother she turned him into her slave from the age of 13, lending him or selling him to her rapacious friends for any favors that might help her gain revenge against the ex-husband she despised and that Sebastian so closely resembled.

Only a sacrifice from a father her never knew and was taught to hate, and the love from the woman he was forced to marry, saved Sebastian from the unholy grip of the Demon the last time he faced it. Now Sebastian and Cleo must work together with their few allies, including the half brothers Sebastian never knew existed, in order to stop the destruction of London and the man whose life links all of theirs together. To do so they must examine what truly lies inside each of them, both light and dark and if their their fragile tie can strengthen into a true Soulbond.

Soulbound has a lot of ground to cover as it wraps up all the loose ends from the first two novels including Cleo and Sebastian’s tenuous growth into a true couple. Sebastian is drawn against his will to the gentle and lovely Cleo, fearing he will taint her with the ugliness from his past as well as his connection to the Demon which he feels left a “stain upon his soul.” Cleo’s father told her she was “precious and pure” as he locked her away, but lately something dark is shifting inside her and when she learns of a horrible legacy from her parents she cannot help but worry she is the one who was marked by the Demon.

Bec McMaster does an excellent job of ramping up the stakes and the excitement in the final arc of this story. Too many other authors would rely on Cleo to be the saintly and pure one and Sebastian to wallow in the darkness but McMaster has a way of constantly switching things up so the hero and heroine take turns saving each other and nothing falls into the old cliches. Their romance is both sweet and steamy as Sebastian gradually works past his years of abuse and experiences love for the first time. All the players from the previous books play important parts as well and McMaster does a wonderful job of teasing characters and plots that might emerge in a spinoff series.

This book is everything anyone who read the first two novels could want in a conclusion, romance, magic, excitement and love in all its incarnations. I highly recommend this book and this series, although I would caution that it would be almost impossible to jump into the series at this point and fully appreciate the characters or the world. Anyone wishing to dip their toe into the Dark Arts should begin with Shadowbound, another excellent story.

I was given an advanced copy of this book for review purposes, but all opinions written here are entirely my own.

I was curious about Sebastian and Cleo the most when I read the first book. I don't know if it's because we already see their relationship from the first book, or if I expect too much, but I must admit that this book not what I expect, not in a good way.

I like Sebastian in the previous two books, but in this book I kind of get annoyed with him. Pushing Cleo away for a good portion of the book just felt exhausting to me. Also, he constantly doing this thing where Cleo cannot do anything because she's such a fragile flower that must be protected at all cost! Argh. I know not all heroine is adept in martial arts or other magical defense but he's doing it alllll the time it makes me roll my eyes. Also, when he did actually take her to some kind of action,

As for Cleo, I like her at the start of the book. She tries to figure things out, she take things into her own hands, she seems like she clearly want to figure things out... but when she's together with Sebastian, I just don't get the same excitement than what I got on the previous books when we see glimpses of them. I wish she interacts more with the other characters other than Sebastian too, like how she "drags" Jeremy to her search of the mirror.

Now that I think of it, Cleo and Jeremy's adventure and that scene when they visited Malachi are my favorites. It's frustrating me, because it's supposed to be Cleo and Sebastian's book, but I'm just getting this exhausted feeling when they're together :( Sebastian's interaction with his brothers, especially Bishop, is so refreshing, but it was tarnished with Also, they did Remy dirty imo.

Ah, I want to love this book, I really do. I love the second book, I've been wanting to read Sebastian and Cleo's book ever since they were mentioned on the first book, but this is just...not my cup of tea, I guess? I'll still try to read the next installment though, I think it will be about Remy and Thea, with murder to solve? Now that's intriguing. I'm guessing Malachi will have a book some time too? I hope I'll love the next books more.

After finishing Hexbound, I was itching to read Cleo and Sebastian's story. They may have been married the longest out of the three couples in the trilogy, but they know the least about each other.

When Cleo and Sebastian were forced to marry as part of an alliance between their parents, neither knew what to expect. Both have been used by their respective parents for most of their lives and never felt the love of a family. Blindfolded by her father to protect her visions of the future, Cleo still has more hope and optimism about life than most. Now that she can see the physical world with her own eyes, she wants to find what else she can offer besides being the "Cassandra." Sebastian has been a a literal slave to his mother's plots, and believes everything someone does hides an ulterior motive. He is afraid of connecting with anyone after a lifetime of physical and emotional abuse.

After the intense ending of Hexbound, we are back with the team as Sebastian's brother, Bishop, teaches him to control his magic. Cleo's father only allowed her to develop the talents he could exploit, so she too is learning more about what she is capable of. Sebastian is keeping Cleo at arm's length, afraid of how he could hurt her and how he can't be the husband she deserves. Cleo is fighting to show Sebastian he is worth her affections and trust. This push-and-pull relationship didn't come across as obnoxious and dramatic, with both Sebastian and Cleo having solid reasons for their behavior.

There were some great twists toward the end, but not so twisty I couldn't believe it. The path our characters trod to figure out where they come together may be long, but it doesn't drag. I could definitely feel how important Sebastian and Cleo's connection to each other was, not just to each other, but to the outcome of this trilogy. There is a planned spin-off to this series, so while Cleo and Sebastian have earned some happiness, I know we'll see them again.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
