In Calem, the first of the New York's Finest series from contemporary romance author Christopher Harlan, a renowned psychologist and an embattled NYPD detective join forces to end the city's reign of terror, finding salvation and love in each other's arms in the process. Dr. Cordelia Summers is a brilliant psychologist. Well respected among her peers and patients alike, she lives only to help others with their problems. While consulting with her colleague on a case, she realizes that her feelings towards him are more than just friendly. Enter Detective Calem Walters: brave, intelligent, and a reluctant hero, he's the best the NYPD has to offer. He's worked some of the city's most dangerous cases and his latest may be the worst. His self-sacrificing nature calls him to duty, but he's struggling with the stress of a failed relationship, and the burden of a long chase with one of the worst criminals of his storied career. Can Cordelia help unburden him and help him catch the man who holds the city in his grasp? And does he share her romantic feelings? An Happily Ever After (HEA) contemporary romance series with each book set in a different borough, the New York's Finest series will follow the interconnected lives and loves of five NYPD officers. The events of book 1 take place in Manhattan. Book 2, Jesse, will be released in the fall of 2017, and will be set in Queens, the author's home borough.
This is my first book by this author. I was actually hesitant to read it just in case if I didn't like it. I did like it and found myself at time LOL.
Calem is a detective who doesn't like a man in uniform. He always found Cordelia attractive but still was dealing with a bad breakup. Cordelia is a smart woman and also a psychologist.
With rating this book it should 4.5. I don't know if I was missing sex scenes or more drama. I will continue to read more of his books. You should definitely pick this series up especially if you love sexy cops.
Wow...Calem...I mean let's start with the fact that he is a Detective (what's hotter then a man with a badge) and follow that up with him being a great guy all around and then throw in the fact that he is HOT. He takes his job very serious, and that leaves him little time to nurture any other type of relationships. That is until me meets Cordelia. He connects with her on a professional level as well as a personal one. They hit it off right away and he wants to spend as much time getting to know her as he can. Calem is every bit the gentleman...until he decides he needs to step up his game with Cordelia. They do some pretty HOT stuff so you should totes read it just for that, but besides that this is a great story that also has a bit of a suspenseful mystery plot as the back drop. I promise you will not be disappointed in this read at all. The writing is on point, the story is on point, and the fact that Christopher will make you fall in love with Jesse who is going to be featured in book 2 is amazing. Also I hope we get to catch up with Calem & Cordy in book 2 (hint, hint).
I enjoyed this book. It was a little bit different in that it was told in 3rd person, and it was not insta-love. There was a nice gradual build-up in their relationship, which made the story more real. If you like sexy detectives, and some suspense with your romance, then this book is for you.
This was my first read from the author and I have to say I enjoyed it.
It started out with a lot of description and not a lot of dialog between the characters; however, as the story progressed, I felt more of a connection with the characters.
The ending was pretty intense!!!!!
Well done and I look forward to reading more from the author.
In a book world of love at first sight I find a slow burn into a relationship refreshing. Calem and Cordelia started as co-workers, then moved to friends and finally lovers. It seems more like real life to me. I enjoyed the characters and found them believable and the storyline kept me reading, although predictable.
At first I found the point of view shifting within a paragraph a bit confusing but if examined it is kind of like the give and take of a growing relationship. Complex and confusing at times.
First time reading this author and was genuinely surprised at how good it was. The story had great fluidity to it making the story not only seem real but also plausible. I really like the premise of cops in different areas of NY. Looking forward to Queens being next.
I will be looking for more from this author in the future.

This is my first book from Harlan. I must say I might love it. It was well written and the story of Calem and Cordelia is entirely intriguing. I would definitely recommend.
A hot cop Calem and Dr Cordy.Great Chemistry.excellent read couldn't put it down.Different genre then im use to.Love it.New author to me. cant wait till book 2
I didn't love this. The writing style was "off" for me. The interchangeable POVs midscene threw me too. While the MCs were fine, smart, sexy, I had no reader connection with them. There are a lot of high ratings for this story so I think it's more me than anything else.
Two people who as individuals are GREAT but when combining their intelligence to understand the behaviour and mind of a criminal - together they are PHENOMENAL.
The backdrop of Christopher Harlan’s new series, is the vibrant streets of Manhatten, NYC. A city that virtually never sleeps, a city where the streets are filled with energy and enthusiasm, yet a danger lurks suspended, within it’s hidden depths.
Calem, a decorated NYC detective… who feels deeply yet endures his emotional pain beneath layers of practicality and strong work ethics. It’s only when he is at his most vulnerable and in the darkest hours of night, that those unsolved crimes and regrets for those he couldn’t save manifest within his dreams. A man simply wanting to do his job - not for glory, nor to be worshipped as a hero, but for the simplicity of bringing criminals to justice. To clean up the streets of a city he loves.
Enter the beautiful Cordelia Summers, renowned Psychologist and good friend. A part time work colleague when called upon for her skills at reading human behaviour. A friend who has secretly desired more but not wanting to jeopardise either their friendship or working relationship.
Neither can stop the attraction that simmers and slowly heats to boiling point… inside these pages, you feel the beautiful synergy between Calem and Cordelia - it’s in their interactions, it’s in their witty banter, it’s the spark that flares within - it’s both of them working together, combining their skills and intelligence, as a cop and psychologist, as they race to catch the dangerous predator stalking the women of their beloved city.
It is within Calem’s grasp to catch this serial predator but he needs to bring Cordelia further into his world. When he realises just how close a serial rapist/killer is, will he fully realise how much he wants and needs Cordelia in his life.- protecting her at all costs. Will Calem get that opportunity? Will their attraction and ultimately love bloom?
Took me a little moment to get into the rhythm of Christopher’s writing style. I have been reading too many 1st person books, that is took a moment to switch gears. Nothing that in anyway detracts from Calem and Cordelia’s story. I have so thoroughly enjoyed reading Christopher’s interpretation of Calem and his story, that I highly suggest you read Calem also. Not only do you get a fabulous, gorgeous man in Calem, but you also get to meet Jesse. Calem’s partner and friend. You get a glimpse into the beginnings of a new romance just waiting on the wings. You are in for a treat.

"As he walked away, she let her mind drift off and only listened to her body, which communicated a single, clear thought that was louder than a shout: I want that man, was all it said to her."
I enjoyed this story! Nothing like a tall, dark and handsome cop, a strong-willed female lead, a serial rapist on the loose, and hot, steamy scenes!! Calem is my kind of book boyfriend. Self-tortured, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, and feeling like he could never be the man she'd need him to be. Cordelia is an amazing character. She balances him. Grounds him. And of course, wants him. She always has. This book had just the right amount of feels. You could feel the frustration Calem and his partner Jesse were feeling regarding their inability to find the bad guy. You could feel the apprehension in Calem and Cordy about giving in to their feelings. There was a little fun, a little steam, suspense and mystery, and of course the happily ever after I love.
Calem has gained unwanted notoriety for being good at his job. He's closed some high profile cases. But he doesn't want the glory. He doesn't see himself as a hero. But he wants to be "her" hero. He'd love to give his heart away but the last person he gave it to shattered it. And all because he was married to his job. Can Cordy help him alleviate the guilt for every victim hurt while he fails at finding the bad guy? Can he allow himself to give in to his feelings for her? Can he be the man he thinks she needs?
Cordelia is a well-respected psychologist. The top in her field. Her work with the NYPD has helped them find the monsters on more than one occasion. She and Calem have been friends for a long time, and have worked together on several cases. But, she has always wanted him. Fantasized about him. Could it be possible he feels the same? Can they work together and still be more? This recent case will end up hitting closer to home than either of them ever thought possible. Will Calem become more than her hero in her dreams?
I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. Something tells me Jesse is going to have one heck of a story too!
Calem Walters and Dr. Cordelia Summers share a common goal of helping people. Calem is a detective with the NYPD and Cordelia is a brilliant, compassionate psychologist. They both listen to and observe people before coming to a conclusion as to how to proceed. Cordelia often assists Calem with his cases, which has brought them closer together. Calem has been promoted swiftly through the department after closing many difficult cases. A serial rapist/murderer is terrorizing the women of Manhattan and Calem is obsessed with putting an end to the violence. He dislikes it when people refer to him as a hero, because he feels guilty for the victims he could not save. Cordelia, since getting to know Calem, thinks of him as her hero and this will never change. The attraction they have for each other is fierce, but they are reluctant to act on it because they don't know if the other reciprocates the feeling. When the rapist strikes again, leaving the victim clinging to life, Calem realizes that he needs Cordelia's help more than ever. He texts Cordelia and asked her to meet him at the station. When she walked into the conference room, she gasped and dropped her coffee. She saw the pictures of the victim and recognized her as one of her patients. Calem was upset for Cordelia and he found it unsettling that one of her patients was the victim. Cordelia meant everything to him and he intended to keep her safe. Will Calem's obsession with the case lead to an arrest before the killer strikes again? "Calem" is the first of five books in the New York City's Finest series by Christopher Harlan. Each book takes place in one of the five boroughs of New York City. Harlan combines sexy, romantic scenes, with the grim reality of big city violence. "Calem" is suspenseful, sensual and full of surprises. I am looking forward to the next book in the series "Jesse", which uses Queens as its backdrop.
Calem is the first book in the New York's Finest series of 5 books by Christopher Harlan. It is a romance novel with a happy ending, and it is about a detective named Calem Walters who works as a homicide detective in Manhattan. Calem and his partner, Jesse, are trying to find and arrest a serial rapist, torturer, and sometimes murderer of women. Calem is extremely stressed because he feels a lot of pressure from his boss, but mostly from himself, to catch the guy responsible for these horrific crimes. Dr. Cordelia Summers is a psychologist who is in private practice, has a good heart, and truly wants to help people. But also Cordelia has been working with Calem and Jesse trying to identify any similarities between the serial rape cases, and trying to find anything that might lead them to the psychopath committing these horrible acts before another woman is harmed. Along the way, Cordelia becomes romantically attracted to Calem and is not quite sure if he is sending signals that he might also be attracted to her.
I really enjoyed this book! Christopher Harlan has written strong characters, describing their backgrounds in detail. I enjoyed the friendship between Calem and Cordelia, and the natural progression that they take to flirtation. I also liked how the characters have a sense of humor, and how they dealt with their stress with that sense of humor, which is a natural way for people who work in high stress professions to be able to deal with their stress. All of these things made the story so much more believable, and one of the reasons why the book is so good! I definitely would recommend this book to all lovers of a great romance!
This book is a surprising twist on the friends-to-lovers trope. Calem Walters is a seasoned, driven, intelligent, logical, Manhattan detective who shuns the spotlight and hides his emotions. Dr. Cordelia Summers is a wildly successful psychologist who met Calem at a medical conference some years ago and has assisted him and his partner, Jesse, with several cases. Both Calem and Cordelia come to the startling realization that they share more than professional respect for one another. But circumstances conspire to keep them at arm's length, including the current gruesome serial rapist case, Calem's humble nature which makes it difficult for him to accept well-deserved praise, and his unresolved feelings about his former love relationship. It is the latter that has him seeking Cordy's professional expertise outside the boundaries of his job. Then there is Cordelia's issue with professional distance and her own self-admitted geekiness. However, both Calem and Cordy are rational, logical, and communicative, so the romantic connection that develops is deep and palpable. The police case on which they are working strikes uncomfortably close to home, giving this reader serious heart palpitations! The characters are well developed, the transition from friends to lovers is realistic, and the dialogue is believable. Bonus: the author includes an epilogue to tie up the loose ends presented in the storyline. And, this is just the first in a 5 book series, continuing with Calem's partner, Jesse. Write fast, Christopher, I can't wait to read the next book!!
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This is my first time reading anything by this author, although I have his other two books on my TBR, but it definitely will not be my last. I would classify this book as romantic suspense with a couple of HOT sexy scenes thrown in where appropriate. Calem is the first in a series of novels about individuals in the NYPD and will span over the five boroughs. This novel is set in Manhattan and revolves around Det. Calem Walters. Calem is seen as a hero by many for cracking some of the toughest cases, but would rather just do his job to the best of his ability and live to see another day. He works with a younger partner, Jesse, as well as a highly intelligent, renowned psychologist Cordelia Summers. Calem met Cordelia at a conference a few years before and has had her consult on a couple of cases as an extra set of eyes and insight. The current case that has him wrapped up in knots is a serial rapist. What makes matters worse for Calem is he takes on all the responsibility of capturing this menace, he is getting increasing pressure from his bosses/mayor to do just that, and his fiance recently left him b/c he spent more time on the job than with her. What happens when the rapist ups his game and it gets very personal for all involved? It definitely has a very satisfying ending in more ways than one. I highly recommend one-clicking this book if you have a chance.
The first in a 5 book series set in New York, each of the books set in a different borough, Calem takes place in Manhattan. Calem is a detective well known for cracking the tough cases that others have tried and been unsuccessful with. Along with his partner, up and comer Jesse, Calem's ace in the hole so to speak is Cordelia, a very successful psychologist who gives them insight and a different perspective. The latest case has both Calem and Jesse frustrated beyond belief. As the body count rises, the commissioner starts putting on the pressure. Add to that the fact that Calem is reeling from the fact that the woman that he saw his future with up and walked out of his life, and you can understand why he's all tied up in knots and his head is swimming. Will Cordelia be able to help him crack the case? Will she be able to help him leave his past relationship behind considering she is one of the only people he has confided in about it? A great story, keeps you on your toes with not only the suspense but the witty, intelligent banter between all the characters. I truly enjoyed this story and I cannot wait for the next one!
I liked the specific names and places referenced, they were spot on.
This was my first book that I have read from this author and it was an ARC of his next book. I admit it took me longer than normal to read this book as I had soo much going on that I could not get my head into it. After I was able to sit down and really get into it I was excited to read the rest of the story. The book started out different than I have read in the past with more of an incite than dialog from the beginning.
What is better than a HOT as hell detective and a psychiatrist working toward the same goal of finding a serial murderer in the city that it would just as hard to find a needle in a haystack. Luck or coincidence played a part in this when a patient of Cordelia's comes back to haunt her.
I can't wait for the next installment in this series to see how Jesse moves on from one department to another. I will not say more until the book comes out but will definitely be reading more from this author. I will also write a different review for Amazon after the release.
Since I do love to read about our men in blue or military when I seen this by this author -yesss. He is also a author I have not read before but adore his writing now. So this one thanks to curiosity I entered in immediately with no problem at all settling in. The characters captivate you with how well this author brings them to the forefront aiding you in forgetting you have entered into a story. Calem is one that is very alpha but has a good rep too. He on occasion collaborates with Dr. Cordelia whom you will soon think of her as only Cordelia because of the growing relationship. A serial brings them together again with it also having a rawness and depth you fall into. He has a partner that also part of the layout. So thanks to this author I am eating this up quickly frustrated when I have to put it down because I just had to know the answers. No easy guess work which is a plus. The heat that is this is also a scorcher with slickness soon to follow. Love how it is spun with by the time I am at the end ready to collapse.
Calem is the first book in a new series by Christopher Harlan about New York's finest. He is a detective who does not believe he is anything special, yet is praised for his ability to solve the tough cases he faces. He recently brought Cordelia in to consult as she is a decorated psychologist and lends valuable insight to Calem and his partner Jesse. The two leads have a definite magnetism to each other that is wonderful to watch grow throughout the story. They both must work past their own concerns of professionalism and past baggage to find a way to be and work together. When their current case hits all too close to home, all of the characters will be tested. Will they come out on the other side unscathed? Will they be together in the end? You'll have to read it yourself to find out :)
Loved the concept of the story and could see this turned into a great date night movie, little something for everyone. I also love the concept of the series; there will be five books total each taking place in a different borough of the city. The two main characters Calem and Cordelia (love the names by the way), have three different types of relationships: colleagues, friends, and doctor/patient. I thought the author handled the crisscrossing of relationship boundaries really well, there was a nice balance to it. This story is more sweet and sexy than hot and steamy, though the major sex scene in the book is quite steamy. One thing that I love about this author is how good he is at writing a level headed male character. In so many romance stories the male can be a little too overbearing and dominate. Don't get me wrong, I love my alphas, but I'm loving this new to me type of male character I'm seeing in Christopher's books and other books. The supporting characters in this book will be the main characters in the next. So why was this a 4 star instead of a 5 star rating for me? Well because the author wrote this book as Third Person Multiple or Third Person Omniscient and I'm having a hard time telling which one it is (the two are easily confused). A lot of books in the romance genre are First Person (which I'm very much used to) and Omniscient is usually reserved for mystery style books. Omniscient is not an easy POV to write, so if that was what the author was going for, I applaud him (and if I'm wrong, I'm sorry). However, there was a little head-hopping, so on occasion I had to re-read a paragraph to make sure I knew what was going on. I definitely plan on checking out the next book in the series.
Great story! It’s full of action, suspense, angst and romance, of course.
Calem is the strong, silent type. He’s a NYPD detective who refuses to be called a hero even though he’s considered just that by many, especially Cordelia.
Cordelia is a renowed psychologist who works with Calem from time to time trying to apprehend some of the worst kind of criminals in NY.
I liked everything about this story, the plot, the characters and the twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat. The sexual tension between Calem and Cordelia was sizzling and when it exploded it was everthing they both imagined and more. I like that they were friends first and they knew each other well, before they got together. The secondary characters are great. Jesse is a hoot. I can’t wait to read his story.
In book one of a new series by Christopher Harlan, we are introduced to Calem Walters, a NYPD detective who works closely with his friend, and partner, psychologist Dr. Cordelia Summers to solve the city's crime spree happening, where women are being raped, and sometimes murdered, by a psychotic person.
The relationship between Calem and Cordelia is developed well, showing how two people can go from a work relationship to something more profound. Calem turns to Cordelia for professional help as well, when the job, and his life become too stressful for him to endure on most days.
Christopher Harlan certainly developed these characters well, where as the reader, you can definitely find yourself relating to them, and being able to understand their thoughts and feelings.
I am so looking forward to reading the next book in this series!
This series combines my two fave genre's, Romance and Thrillers.
This is book 1 in a 5 book series that follows the adventures of five NYPD detectives. This story revolves around Calem who is a NY detective. Calem is a NYPD detective who refuses to be called a hero even though the media and his fellow colleagues consider him one. Cordelia is a psychologist who often works cases with Calem from time to time providing her perspective of the criminal they are trying to catch.
It was well written and the story of Calem and Cordelia was a slow burn romance which I enjoyed as we got to see how they connected and got to see things from both POV. It was filled with action, crime and romance and we get to meet characters that will feature in the next books.
I couldn't make it past the seventh chapter in this book. With the number of high reviews, I was expecting a pleasant story. Not to say it was void of merit when considering the extensive information included to uphold a very good fictional crime and murder mystery, but there were significant moments of confusion when it was from the point of view of one character only to drastically switch to another without warning. The worst type of reader whiplash. The writer has an elaborate amount of imagination, fortified with a means of descriptive information and builds on the supposed emotion of the characters within. Unfortunately, I am NOT a fan of having to backtrack into what I've read in order to figure out why the story changed dependent upon the perspective of a character, takes away from the flow and rate of reading for me.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review. This is the first book of Christopher Harlan's I have read and it won't be my last. This is a friends to lovers scenario with suspense, drama and crime solving thrown in to keep you guessing. Calem is one of New York's finest detectives and Cordelia is a psychologist that is helping him solve one of the biggest cases. You will fall in love with Calem's character, he is tough and doesn't like to be called a hero but all he wants to do is protect the whole of New York which in the past has cost him personally. Their story will have you intrigued and glued to every page. If you like your romance books with a tough hot alpha cop who has a heart of gold then this is the book for you.
Calem isn't your every day detective, he's a man on a mission when it comes to his cases, and his feelings for Cornelia, and she wouldn't have it any other way. The ups and downs and everything in between with our leading couple and their close friends are impossible not to feel too, and when the last page is turned you can't help be disappointed it's over. These aren't the usual characters we see, and it was a pleasant surprise that turned into down right joy as each detail about them emerged and gave me a taste of what this author has in store for his readers going forward. With a lot of wit and beautifully developed characters, Christopher Harlan has me begging for more, and I have no doubt that he will deliver.
