White Rabbit, Red Rabbit del iraní Nassim Soleimanpour es una suerte de monólogo participativo, donde el autor no conoce las instrucciones de la obra hasta 48 horas antes de ser montada, y el guion hasta el momento en el que sube al escenario. El mismo autor la denomina un experimento teatral de “participación obligatoria”, donde se sostiene una conversación con el actor y la audiencia en tiempos y espacios desplazados. Montada, esta convivencia peculiar utilizaría el texto como vehículo de la voz de Soleimanpour, inmortalizándola, ya que deja el tiempo y el espacio en que el texto fue escrito (Abril, 2010) para viajar, a través de las palabras, al lugar y tiempo de la realización.

Que dicha participación sea obligatoria cobra implicaciones adicionales cuando se toma en consideración las condiciones en que el autor escribió la obra: aislado, por no completar el servicio militar, en Irán, país donde la censura es el pan de cada día. Como el mismo autor afirma: “Sabe a libertad poder viajar a otros mundos a través de mis palabras. Es un viaje atemporal: uno que no necesita pasaporte”.

Así, que el actor y la audiencia sean vehículo espontáneo de divulgación, lleva la idea de la censura a terrenos inexplorados, dando espacio a una voz en lugares y tiempos disímiles a los del contexto silenciado del autor.

White Rabbit, Red Rabbit podría ser concebida como una obra de teatro que es asimismo herramienta suicida, o como dice el autor: “una maquina para terminar la vida”. En un momento, el texto le pide al actor —lector de la obra— que seleccione de entre dos vasos, uno de ellos presuntamente contaminado con veneno mortal. El guion dice lo siguiente (me permito una traducción):

Y les advierto que uno de estos vasos podría contener alguna sustancia desconocida que podría destruir el cuerpo que ha sido prestado a mis palabras.

Luego de tomar responsabilidad por crear una herramienta suicida y de responsabilizar a los miembros de audiencia que están siendo pasivos a confrontar el castigo de la sociedad, el autor agrega (en la voz del actor):

En conclusión, tengo que decir que a veces siento que lo que estoy escribiendo no es mío. A veces siento que OTRO “YO” vive DENTRO de mí y ESE “yo” habla en mi nombre — casi como si fuera alguien a quien le he prestado mi cuerpo. O tal vez estoy leyendo de la escritura de alguien más, o alguien más, algún OTRO YO, está hablándome en voz alta… para USTEDES.

Aquí, Soleimanpour explota su recurso al máximo, logrando una especie de puesta en abismo donde el actor no sólo es vehículo de las palabras del autor, sino de las palabras que el autor no parece estar seguro que sean suyas.

Can you imagine a play that require no Director, No Set, No Rehearsal? Well not even an 'actor' in its true sense? Just someone who can read (actor gets to see the script only on stage for the first time). And a set of people as audience? Well, that's what White Rabbit, Red Rabbit all about! And a lot more!

It's a theatrical experiment by Iranian Author and Playwright Nasim Soleimanpour, who uses the actor / performer as a device to engage in a conversation with transcending the boundaries of time and space. The uniqueness gives the play, a different outcome everytime (an actor can perform it only once, an audience must watch it only once).

It was our good fortune to watch Anurag Kashyap perform this in QTP production at Tata Literature Live some years back, where the Author himself was present. It was a such a unique experience.

It is hard to review a piece of experimental theatre, one which is designed for the actor and the audience to go in completely blind. I was able to read this one cold for some friends and wanting the authentic experience I had not read it beforehand. This piece is extremely effective, it gave me lots to ruminate about in the days afterwards. This play has moments of levity but there are extremely heavy themes which intentionally come without trigger warnings. Nassim Soleimanpour creates a unique relationship between himself, the actor and the audience. A unique piece, this one is meant to be experienced or read aloud.

I wouldn't recommend this if you had major trigger warning concerns.
