Redemption Lane, Rachel Blaufeld Genre: Literature/Fiction, Contemporary Romance. Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
I haven't yet read the second book, read the first ages ago and yesterday re-read that ready for reading book two. Today hopefully, maybe tomorrow. Wow, what a read...its so packed with emotion, sadness, and really tugged at my sensibilities. I veered from hope to despair, from happiness to the depths of sorrow. It contains some really dark vibes at times – and of course that’s right up my street. Its not all despair and melancholy though – there are breakthroughs when you feel this time they really will come through, and then dammit, something else happens and poor Bess or Lane is sent back to their demons. I loved Bess, she’s really struggled to get back after hitting the bottom, nearly dying and ending in rehab. She was determined to put her past behind her – sadly though it wasn’t to be left behind but crept up, sneaking in by way of Lane. Until then though she’s working hard, filling every hour she can with her job, attending meetings for addicts and with looking after the wonderful Brooks Bailey, her rescue dog. Its quiet up in the mountains where she lives but it suits her. She’s a small group of connections, they can’t really be called friends - more acquaintances really, from work or the addiction group. Somehow she’s getting by in life, its not fun but hard work but its all she knows now. Lane, he’s got his own troubles and is always pulling his twin Jake out of situations. Then That night happens, when Bess collapses at Lane’s feet and somehow in the muddle of getting help for her he doesn’t follow up what happened, just leaves Jake and runs. He’s now a rich and successful CEO, and then on a working visit to a hotel he runs into Bess. Of course she doesn’t remember him, after all she was hardly in a position to notice anyone, and he just can’t stay away from her, there’s an attraction he can’t shut down. He’s never short of ladies, they flock to him being the magic duo of rich and good-looking, but it’s Bess he wants. Slowly he persuades her and they begin a relationship. Its fraught though from their demons of the past, from so many things that I began to think they’d never come through together. It was so tense at times, so edge of seat wondering what would happen, and then some beautiful moments when all was going well. Of course secrets always come out in the end, and Lane’s knowledge of her collapse comes out just when things are going really well for them. Its not only that secret that comes out though, there’s the connections from the twins past, the secret that plagues Lane, gives him terrible nightmares, but he refuses to admit it or talk about it when Bess questions him. She loves him and wants to help, but each time he runs, just shuts her out and goes. It’s what he’s always done to cope but this time, if he wants Bess he needs to face up to his past. It’s a complete novel, and wraps up beautifully with a quick glimpse into the future. Its a wonderful novel, more than just a simple romance, a feeling that this story could be real, and has some great secondary characters; Jake, Shirley, AJ, James – they all play a special part in making this book come alive for me.
Stars: Five, a great read, a romance but so much more than Just a romance... ARC provided by Netgalley and publishers.
Bess let her pain take over her life and it almost destroys her. Years later she has made her life very structured and she has no plans of changing it, but is she really living? Lane is a CEO who has one woman on his mind and that is the woman who collapsed in front of him years ago. Bess doesn't remember Lane but he remembers her. Bess's secret isn't the only one Lane is struggling with. What will happen when Bess finds out all his secrets? Isn't better to push her away now, he clearly doesn't deserve her. Will Bess and Lane find their redemption road within each other?
Wow! What can I say about this book, it blew me away. Lane and Bess both have strong ideas of what their lives should be. They both want each other. They both are insecure about their lives and their past. It was a beautiful story about letting that person in your life and allowing yourself forgiveness. There were twists in this story that I never saw happening. Great story. A must read book and I can't wait to read Absolution Road, the second book in this duet. This was my first book by this author and I have to say that it won't be my last.
Absolution Road:
I have to say I loved this book more than the first one in this duet set. Jake is so much more tortured by the past than Lane was. He wanted vindication for what happened to them. When he met his own version of kryptonite in Alyson I loved that I got to see the softer side of him that I was hinted at in Redemption Lane. I did not like Camper at all, I thought she was self-involved and unworthy of being part of Jake's life. Jake is such a strong character but doesn't feel as though he is worthy of anyone's love including his brothers. He feels like he is the screwed up twin and that Lane is perfect with his perfect life. The inner struggle that Jake deals with was heartbreaking but it helped him grow. Then there is Alyson "Aly" and she has her own demons she is struggling with. What happened in this book broke my heart and brought me to tears a couple times over. This story was exciting, maddening, sexy, romantic, jaw dropping and page turning. I didn't want this story to end but I couldn't stop myself from reading the next page. A MUST READ BOOK!!! Strong characters, strong story and amazing relationship.
The Crossroads Duet by Rachel Blaufeld Review by Lora Jarvis
5 out of 5 stars
I loved both stories so much and they were so different that it wasn’t at all like reading the same book again. Twin bothers, Lane & Jake Wrigley, are definitely two book boyfriends that will stick with me for some time to come!
REDEMPTION LANE This one is Lane and Bess’s story. They meet under dire circumstances but don’t reconnect for several years. In fact, Bess doesn’t even remember meeting and Lane keeps it a secret for way too long.
Lane is a self-made man who tends to bail his brother out a few too many times and doesn’t have time in his life for one woman. He much prefers to “love ‘em and leave ‘em” as he goes. Bess is a recovering drug addict and alcoholic determined to get thru each day as it comes. She keeps herself busy with a routine and thinks her life is swell.
I enjoyed the way the story progressed and watching the characters develop feelings and deal with life. There were parts that were a little iffy, but overall I just really enjoyed this book and can’t wait for more.
ABSOLUTION ROAD This is Jake’s story and it was my favorite of the two. I loved watching big, tough Jake fall to his knees for a girl like Aly. These two really stole the show as far as I was concerned. They made my heart beat little faster and I could feel their connection through the pages.
Jake has been coddled for far too long and as he decides to stand on his own two feet and take care of himself, he’s knocked sideways by the public defender sent to help him after he’s arrested for assault. Aly came from nothing and doesn’t expect anything good in her life. She’s strong and independent and fights off Jake’s advances as long as she can.
The drama in this one was a lot more intense than the other, but that made the story so much more exciting. I truly, truly loved everything about this book and can’t wait to find more from this author.
What a emotional and beautiful ride as I read this book. TO be completely honest I have never read anything by this author. I received an email asking for review, why not. Well I am so glad that I read this duet book. OK let's break it down.
Redemption Lane- Lane, Bess and AJ...
If people really know my they know I love angst, drama, emotional books. For me its pealing the layers of ones soul to get what they are needing. Bess and Lane met hap-chance at yoga. Bess was beyond drug induced, she was at her rock bottom. Lane walked away from this beautiful stranger and years later she was always on his mind. AJ is Bess sponsor in the AA program, yet he feels so much for her. Is he the one to finally get her to feel again or is it Lane, the one man that saw her at her worst year ago..

Absolution Road Jake and Alyson
This one gutted me, it was so raw of emotion on Jake. He was so honest with his feelings for someone he didn't think he deserved. Aly is on a road of helping others when they have been wronged. She meets Jake one night as she gets him out of jail. She has feeling that she hasn't had and wondering if it's Jake or just plan lust. Jake is on a road of absolution from his past and Aly maybe the key to helping him.
The suspense builds after the prologue but it sure was one heck of a beginning! Bess passes out in yoga class on some poor dude that she never knows who he was. Years later down the road she meets Lane. What she doesn't know is she has already met him previously.... It is a slow build up of how or when she will figure out how she knows him. Lane keeps secrets from her but yet expects to build a relationship with her... I'm not so sure I would be okay with that. This drama unfolding holds your attention captured, page after page. I really liked the glimpses we see of Jake, Lanes twin. He brings a mystery to the series that makes you want more.
Book 2 Absolution Road
So I definitely liked book one better. This second book in the duet is good but not has captivating like Lane and Bess's story. This book is about Jake and his journey to forgiving himself. He does have quite a few demons lurking in the closet but he manages to hold them in. Jake is definitely the more troubled twin of the duo but he makes bad look so good. I don't feel like he was ready to Alyson to be in his life just yet and it was hazardous on their relationship. It definitely is a strong series that will have you questioning everyone's character!
This duet really did me in. I love where both stories took us. The were both emotional, angsty, frustrating and more. I just love Rachel Blaufeld's writing. She has this way that has you connecting with the characters, even the secondary ones, and the story. I finished reading this duet a few days ago. I waited to do my review because I knew I would bawl and I wanted my thoughts to settle on both stories. When I get so emotionally invested like I was, I tend to fall in a book funk of sorts. So, I just right into a dark romance thinking that would help keep me out of the funk. It did help. But as I sit here now and reflect back on the things, I can feel my chest tightening, throat clogging, and tears welling. I love both Lane and Jake. I don't think I could pick a favorite so being the book whore that I am, I'm claiming to be my new BBFs. Seriously though, there were times when I would think, "I think I like Lane more because of this or that" or "I like Jake more because he does this". But when it comes down to it, I liked them for who they are individually. While they are identical twins, they each have their own redeeming qualities and pulled at my heartstring in different ways. I know I should have reviewed each book seperately but I couldn't stop in between books. I just needed read Jake's story right away. I think it's best to read both of these books back to back anyway. Rachel Blaufeld is a favorite and I look forward to reading more from her.
The Crossroads Duet was initially published as a two novel series. The first novel (part), Redemption Lane, is not only a story of love, but a story of desperation and self-deprecating despair. When Bess and Lane first meet they are both battling demons, but have different crutches. Bess turns to drugs and alcohol, while Lane indulges in meaningless , shallow relationships.
Bess finds redemption in sobriety. She struggles with it daily, but she stays clean. Lane, on the other hand, still needs to atone for his bad decisions. He needs to come clean with Bess about how they first met, but is he strong enough to own his past?
Author Blaufeld has created truly empathetic characters. She has sensitively written their emotional story. She gives her characters realistic struggles, she doesn’t shy away from putting a spotlight on their vulnerabilities. I felt Bess’ insecurity and Lane’s hollowness. Blaufeld’s writing made me feel like I was on this journey of redemption with Lane and Bess.
Redemption Lane is a lusty tale of loss, hardship, and the search for solace.
Part two of this duet is Absolution Road. It is an emotional story of a man haunted by his past and a scrappy woman who has worked hard to dig herself out from her humble youth. It is a tale of two people who think they are undeserving of a loving relationship because of their pasts.
Jake and Aly meet in prison. That’s right, I said prison. She’s a public defender assigned to Jake when his chivalry turns violent and he lands in jail on Christmas Eve. Jake hasn’t forgiven himself for his past; he struggles to maintain control of his anger in most situations, but at heart, he is a good man. Aly’s poor upbringing has left her incredibly insecure. Her physical beauty and her academic and professional accomplishments don’t make up for her past. She keeps her circle small, believing that no one would be interested in her if they knew her background.
Serendipity brings Jake and Aly together. Over a period of time, the two run into one another at odd places. While Aly’s walls are tall and thick, Jake eventually wears her down and she agrees to dinner. Beyond Aly’s physical beauty, Jake sees a strong, kind woman who inspires him to be a better person.
“With this girl, I wanted something I’d never wanted before. To be a better man. For her. For me.”
Although I found their self-loathing tiresome after a while, the characters are believable. I loved that both Aly and Jake were able to love and care for the other unconditionally even though neither thought they deserved love themselves.
Jake’s and Aly’s story is about finding a way forward no matter the obstacle. Initially, the couple’s obstacles are self-made, but Ms. Blaufeld adds some nefarious characters associated with Aly’s latest case load. The resulting conflict culmination is shocking. Ms. Blaufeld went all in for the emotional tug at readers’ hearts when she presented Jake and Aly with a real hurdle to clear.
The story is well written, and the plot moves along at a good pace. Detailed interaction between the main characters provides good character development; the detailed beginning doesn’t, thankfully, lead to a giant leap at the end of the story to wrap everything up. I loved that the main characters didn’t jump into a romantic relationship, but developed a friendship based relationship over a realistic period of time. I also appreciated that the end of the story further emphasized author Rachel Blaufeld’s theme of unconditional love and perseverance.
Wow. Just wow. This box set is just such a journey. I had to keep taking a break as I read just because so much happens, in both stories!!
Lane is the more responsible of the twins. He's always been the cleaner-upper of Jake's messes. And that's how he meets Bess. Fast forward years later and he still can't forget Bess. She has always been in his mind and when he meets her again and he thinks it's meant. Well ish. But he just can't stay away from her. So besides all this, there's all the other things that both Lane and Bess go through and learn.
I am so glad that Jake's story was after Lane's. Because yes, Lane and Bess, get a HEA but there's still some unanswered questions plus you really want to find out what's going to happen with Jake. But now Lane is living his own life and Jake can't bother him to clean his messes anymore. So that's when he meets Aly. Both like each other but the circumstances of their meeting are less than ideal.
This two book duet is definitely a #MustRead if you like a romance that has twist and turns and has a bit of suspense and thrills all rolled into one. Then add into Sexy, Alpha-Male, Broken, Yet getting better men... You really have a great read.
Book One of this series is Redemption Lane, that centers around brother #l Lane, who is this smart, successful, controlled, rich , sexy man. Who meets this broken, recovering women Bess. Their story is one of heartache, pain, love, grown. Watching these two build this romance based on life changing love is amazing and you will definitely love this story.
Book Two is Absolution Road and it centers around brother #2 Jake.. He is more of the wild card, the brother that has his life not so together, I think you will understand why he is the way he is when you unfold his past. Jake is definitely the more ALPHA of the brothers, but he has the biggest wall of the two and watching that wall soften is pretty great. Who meets a women Alyson, so will be the game changer in his story. Their story will be full of twist and turns and the ending is not all hearts and roses. This book was a little more heartbreaking for me.
Both books were hard to put down. Each book with it's own characters, but definitely had the same broken men, finding that one person that makes them want to be better. I have a feeling a lot of Romance readers will love this Duet!
This are the first books I've read from this Author and they won't be the last. I loved her writing style and I adored this Duet.
Twins Lane and Jake Wrigley although identical are nothing alike. Lane is the sensible, successful brother whilst Jake is the out of control always in trouble kind. But they share an unshakeable bond that's never wavered since childhood.
This Duet tells each brothers story, we get to see them struggle with their past and they need to decide whether to let it rule their futures.
Both of them find themselves at a crossroads and they get the chance of happiness with two beautiful women Bess and Aly. if only they can just let themselves feel worthy of love.
These book just drew me in, they were very emotional at times but beautiful too. I had a few laughs along the way, these twins will own your heart, they certainly have mine.
Redemption Lane: My first read by this author. The characters are well written and the storyline kept me turning the pages. Lane and Bess fight through their pasts to create a life together. Absolution Road: Jake and Alyson, an unlikely couple that fought for their happily ever after. With cute puppies, hate crimes, kidnappings and plenty of heat, the storyline kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next.
The Crossroads Duet included Redemption Lane and Absolution Road. This duet was about identical twin brothers who looked the same but carried different emotional scars. Redemption Lane was Lane's story with Bess finding redemption for his past burdens. Absolution Road was Jake's story. Redemption Lane was about selfish characters wrapped up in their own pain and grief to take notice of others around them. Bess was a young woman who grew up without a mother and a father who struggled to raise a young girl, into a woman.
Rachel was very direct with her characters voices expressing there sexual desires quite blatantly. However, a declaration of truth got tangled in the conversations never being the appropriate time to come clean. The story was very sexual, that's where most of the growth took place, as well as, the connection.
"when I’m with you, I don’t feel like a playboy. I’m a man chasing a woman, scared I’m not gonna catch her.” The best response a playboy could say in this situation.
Redemption Lane had elements of forgiveness, guilt, emotional turmoil, and pain. Bess was addicted to drugs, alcohol, and sex. While Lane was addicted to women. Both avoiding feelings and emotions for a past they were trying to run away from. Together they weathered the storm and found redemption.
In the beginning, I was hooked on Bess's character. Unfortunately, Lane's character changed the mood of the story with his coping methods of avoidance and distance. I didn't feel the same connection as the author for these characters, but I did enjoy Bess's survival skills and restraint to remain clean. Her dedication to meetings and reaching out to sponsors was admirable. I got tired of the timeline pattern watching the weeks and months pass by. In between that time a character was introduced as an unnecessary distraction.
Absolute Road was about Alyson and Jake who both held onto childhood fears creating insecurities and pain into their adult life. Both were unable to move past the demons of their childhood. Here are a few elements of this story: Client vs. lawyer. Law abiding citizen vs. law breaker. Bad boy vs. good girl. Poor girl vs. rich guy. Boring girl vs. wild guy. Commitment-phobe vs. loyal to commit. Worthy vs. unworthy. Fancy cars vs. taking the bus. Insecure vs. secure. Fitness freak vs. fitness deficient. Geek vs. popular. Brains vs. brawn. Responsible vs. irresponsible. Soft vs. hard. You gets the gist these two were opposites. Story had themes of forgiveness, trust, compassion, protectiveness, and love. Both wanted a second chance at life. Jake wanted a second chance at not being viewed as a criminal. Alyson wanted a second chance at not being isolated and alone. Alyson's character constantly reminded Jake how poor she was in comparison to his lavish lifestyle. Hearing her constantly say those words got tiresome. The mentioning of outfits and the styles Jake wore next to her barren threads was annoying. The point was made and driven home hard. Jake's character kept harping about his past transgressions unable to let it go or move on even after Lane, Bess, Alyson, and the doctor told him he should. These characters were so needy. They needed constant codling. They needed to be convinced they could be survivors. Other characters had to exude their strength into them. They were exhausting to read about. The duet was an okay read. The general theme of being a survivor and learning to forgive was great except where Shirley's character came into play.
Two books in one. I enjoyed the first book better than the second;however, both were totally different stories. The first book had more depth to the characters. The push/pull became annoying over time. The second book was faster pace and didn’t have the push/pull as the first.
Lane and Bess and Jake and Aly, two wonderful couples with two very different but great stories. Ups, downs, hardships but most of all respect bring these two couples together. Their journey to finding love is exceptional.
Both of the Wrigley brothers! Can’t beat that. This is a terrific duet. Both Lane and Jake have troubling issues they are dealing with from their past. And they find comfort in their lovely women but Bess and Aly are not all sunshine and rainbows either. Both of these stories are emotional, romantic and full of feelings. Great writing and characters from this wonderful author.
This is the first time I read something from this author and I have to say the duet was nice. Two typical love stories about "broken" twins who fine soulence in "broken" girls and together they become whole again.
I thought both books were nicely written. The character devolament was nice and I love how they both had a back story. I do think that the stories were a little rushed and there were alot of secondary charaters that were half devolved; like they were introduced and mention enough to have to be inclured in the end but wasn't.
Overall it you love simple love stories this book is for you
The story is a journey of two brothers and their significant others. It’s full of drama about their lives. I gave 3 stars because I’m bothered with the use of past tense during a present tense scenario. Describing the person in a “was” situation where the author is describing the present situation is taking away my appreciation on the story. All through 2 books I’m highlighting past tense that should be described as “I am not I wasn’t”; “He is not He was”; “I was putting on some cream instead of I am putting on some cream”. Since we pay the book we expect that it was at least proofread before it was published. This is my first book from the author.
This review is only for book 1 of the duet. I liked it, but I didn't love it enough to read book two. I liked the characters and storyline fine, I just wasnt blown away
I read the first book in the duet but not the 2nd. I finished the first kind of in a "meh" mood. I just wasn't invested enough to want to read the 2nd book in the duet. Sorry
Well I read both books and it’s weird because my feelings were total opposite with each one.
In REDEMPTION LANE, it took me a little time to get into the story, and then I loved it.
But with ABSOLUTION ROAD, I started loving the pace, the characters, the banter, but then there was an unnecessary excess of drama and plots, especially near the end. Was it really necessary to add “this” to “Legs”?
I was also really tired of the baby sitter plot… I ended rolling my eyes several times by the end of this book, and it’s such a shame, since I’d started really loving it!!!!
All in all, there was so many lines I loved from both books, Rachel is really talented, but the pace (especially in R. Lane) didn’t really worked well for me ( too much jumping from weeks, days, months…. it doesn’t help) and the “too much drama/plots” in A. Road made my final rating drop, from a 4/4.5 to an “OK read”.
But clearly, Rachel has a really good writing!
Maybe two books a little longer each one would have given her more space to improve all those aspects.
