What an amazing turn of events and and incredible story. I never thought that the author would bring forth this new twisted story in this series. This was a shocking story that kept me glued from beginning to end. I also loved how this author brought this story to live and made it collide with one of the other stories. It was so cool how two different lives collided without us truly knowing it. I really enjoyed this story and its outcome and I think this one is by far my favorite story yet. This author is an absolute genius and I highly recommend this read.
Book 6 in the Demon Series, and what a twist this was, I was not expecting that!! E.H. James has gone back in time with this one to books earlier in this series, and it connects and collides with that story, bringing a whole new dimension and meaning to what you have previously read about. A brilliant turn of events!
Nicholas is Edward's brother, found wandering the streets at 5 yrs old, with no memory of what has happened to him. As his tale unfolds you learn just what has happened to him throughout his life, what he has had to contend with, and how he hopes to set things right.
Loved this and how it interacts with some of the previous stories, a brilliant read!
“Unless we can find long-term foster care, he’ll go into the orphanage.”
Canadian author E.H. James is a prolific writer of short stories – stories that test the imagination and call forth ghost like thoughts of the dark world about which we know very little. James is part of that conundrum as there is no biographical information on this gifted author as though that is meant to be part of the mysteries presented. We learn that she has read and researched in the areas of parapsychology and metaphysics, for the past 40 years, and has woven the real and imaginary together into stories of the strange and bizarre. The fruits of her labor show!
James’ mastery of the short story is obvious to those readers fortunate to have been introduced to her craft. In a matter a few pages she is able to conjure an atmosphere that challenges the reader’s courage to enter past the initial page, and the manner in which she quickly sketches lifelike characters and draws us into their interactions with the challenges they encounter is masterful.
THE DEMON SERIES of which NICHOLAS: LOST INNOCENCE is the sixth volume demonstrates James’ mastery of the short story. In a brief 104 pages she elevates the suspense for the entire series even more. The entire Demon Series covers centuries; the sixth volume returns to California, 1962.
James’ synopsis covers the story well ‘On a September night, in 1962, five-year-old Nicholas Starke finds himself alone on a street in Fairfield. Confused and frightened, he is rescued by a kind couple. When that same couple adopts him, he is able to move on with his life...only the people in the town of Fairfield won't let him. And when met with angry and frightened stares, wherever he goes, his parents decide it best to move. But where can you go, when strange happenings follow your every move? Will Nicholas hold on to what is left of his innocence, or will his brother's influence be his downfall?’
Knowing that the series continues makes the mystery of part 6 a very exciting continuation and growth. E.H. James’ masterful uses of the back and forth time frames for the series adds immeasurably to the suspense, with backgrounds offered in a near random fashion to explain the destinies of her characters. She is a master writer.
Nicholas Starke never imagined the chaos that would surround him upon being found wandering alone one night. At five-years-old, he'd been too young to remember the circumstances surrounding the bizarre happenings that had taken place. Over the years, however, the little things prove to unhinge his memory.
Nicholas: Lost Innocence tells the tale of what happened to Nicholas and broadens upon the circumstances that have led him to where he is now. This is a boy—a man, really—who's gone through so much. He's had to contend with the machinations of his older brother in the hopes of setting all wrongs to right.
E. H. has gone all out in broadening this complex story, filling in the gaps the previous books in the Demon series have left behind. While a part of a series, this book also acts as a standalone. The author provides enough back story/information to catch the reader up on past events before moving forward with the present story. Granted, we now have a few new twists and turns to contend with.
Will Edward Starke's legacy be erased, once and for all, I wonder? Only time, and future stories, will tell.
