The Darker Ages 3: Retribution is a historical fantasy set in a virtual reality. Knowledge of the previous books is recommended.
I'm a rather reclusive author living in Ohio with four cats. I write super fluffy fluff and darkest grim grimdark. "This author has a strange imagination" was my favorite compliment ever. I hope my strange imagination entertains someone out there!
An amazing ending to what has been a fantastical trilogy, full of adventure in a virtual reality game called The Darker Ages, where created characters were very different from those in real live, however as our couples in the altsphere start to pair off, many of them decide they want to meet up in the mainsphere too. Obviously the trepidation before every meeting is great on both sides, fearing they are not good enough, but it seems that many a character is changed to fill in the gaps in the real person's character. I love that the mainsphere is finally given importance, as I was fearing humans were ready to just give up on life, and leave the real world to the AI. I also love the happy ending after all the trauma and battles that needed to be fought in order for Princess Arienne to get her throne back from the Usurper King Rufus, who had murdered her father. I also enjoyed seeing some of the bastards getting their comeuppance especially James Bain. As well as seeing the rogue of our tale, the charming Alfred Du Bois finally find a woman to make him bend the knee and show respect. This is a very enjoyable series, based in a historical setting, a mix of LitRPG, adventure and romance with fun characters, making this a real pleasure to read.
Haha, that wiper story gets me every time. So we follow up with Alfred in this one. Compared to other characters, I enjoyed the mystery surrounding his character the most.
What I have noticed is that most of the series start strong, but somewhere in the last installments they lose their flow, and that happened with this one. Don't get me wrong, I loved this series and the characters, but the buildup to some of the reveals wasn't as exciting as I had hoped. The ending, however, was hella emotional, and I loved it.
