This book is one that I am honestly not sure how to rate, nor am I sure what my reaction is after reading it. In order to fully derive all of the information from it, it needs to be read slowly and deliberately, so I do not think that it is an easy read. However, it is an interactive book, addressing the reader with questions for them to answer along the way. There are colorful pages and questions in text boxes so that they will stand out. From a grammatical standpoint, there is an overuse of commas, which slows down the narrative.

Overall, the language of “Welcome to the Shivoo” seems academic, to the point that it might serve as a deterrent. I appreciate, to a certain extent, Laura Bartnick’s wisdom that she is attempting to convey and teach, and I enjoyed her references to many other Capture books. I have read all of the ones that she mentions, and I look forward to the newest offerings. A combination of two quotations sum up the main message of “Welcome to the Shivoo”: “Creativity came prior to salvation, to evangelism, to preaching, and teaching. The Son was God’s creative power expressing His heart for a story and a place of belonging for the first flesh…In whatever depiction, creatives are called out to reach out to others with what they understand of God’s glory in every situation.”

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Celebrate Lit and was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when Welcome to the Shivoo: Creative Mimicking the Creator arrived in the mail from the publisher. This book is not one to read rapidly but to read gradually to gain the insight Bartnick desire for each individual in using their creativity to mimic God. The chapters built on each other to fully understand how God designed mankind to be creative in their own ways. Each one is unique and can be useful in life with their own inner creativity, some are more prominent than other creations but each one has a purpose in life. Bartnick brought God’s Word into the chapters to illustrate her logical for creativity mimicking the Creator.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Capture Book Publishers and was under no obligation to write a review. I have shared my own thoughts.

When the opportunity to review this book landed in my inbox, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the title. What’s a shivoo? And what does it have to do with creative people and God?

Early in the book, Laura Bartnick explains that shivoo is Australian lingo for boisterous party. She writes:
"It depicts not only the sounds and tastes of a world of imaginative process, but it also depicts the finale, the glorification of the Christian creatives and our artwork––when our words and worlds collide together––with our Creator in glory."

Bartnick explains that creativity is important to God and without it, nothing exists.

Each chapter focuses on Bartnick’s rules for being a successful creative. For example, rule 1 is: “Determine to mimic the Creator’s priorities creating original things with the Spirit of the living God and improving things for others, guided by His Word.” Rule 2 is to acknowledge our Creator as the source of our creativity.

This is a book about how creatives (authors, photographers, painters, musicians, dancers, sculptors, etc.) can use God and the Bible to enhance our work. Bartnick writes: "Being creative as a Christian is just as spiritual a discipline as giving to the poor or taking care of one’s parents in their old age."

It’s a message that can be used by anyone, not only those who work in the various creative arts. It’s also not just about being creative, it’s about what you do with that creativity. It’s the message in your writing or painting or music or dancing or whatever. It’s how you use your own creativity to help others, such as someone who facilitates art therapy programs.

Throughout the book, Bartnick includes a lot of thought-provoking questions in the text and callouts. She doesn’t shy away from addressing how contemporary and even controversial issues impact the Christian artist.
She says that God has given us a voice and we should speak through our God-given creativity. We should not let our faith constrict us but rather let it release our creativity. Remember, she points out, that Jesus went out without knowing where He was going.

Bartnick discusses some of the industry events that led me to write The Simple Facts About Self-Publishing (which is available on Amazon) and even repeats part of the message that book, which is the importance of quality and accuracy.

In the chapter on nurturing creatives, she addresses another topic near to my heart: Support creative people by paying them fairly for their work and don’t exploit them by using their work without compensation.

Regardless of how it manifests, our creativity is pleasing to God and we should celebrate it. As Bartnick says, Welcome to The Shavoo!

Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the publisher. The opinions expressed are mine.

The desire to create and be creatives can be intimidating and finally accepting a calling a a creative forges a conflicting world of tension and glory. The joy of creating something and the line between sin and glory. Creativity is something to be embraced, after all in "the beginning God created", and yet often creatives will put other needs before their intrinsic desire simply because they don't know how to express it to another. Welcome to the Shivoo!: Creatives Mimicking the Creator by Laura Bartnick delves into Christian and biblical insights that are key to pursuing a creative path and understanding your place in His plan.

Within Welcome to the Shivoo!: Creatives Mimicking the Creator are Laura Bartnick's suggestions for rules in creating, including guidelines and how to portray a message in Christian literature that will inspire but not lecture or scold. You can feel the author's passion and enthusiasm breathed into every page. This is clearly a topic close to their heart as the desire to put this message out seems all consuming. Nicely presented with a final summary at the end of each chapter with the key points to be taken away Laura Bartnick could help put people on a better path if they are struggling to understand their place as a creator in the eyes of the Creator. Laura Bartnick asks a lot of prevalent questions, encouraging the reader to think, while giving them information and tools to guide them towards an answer. This is a very philosophical read and, whilst I didn't agree with everything, I found the information to be well presented and discussed, often supported by relevant passages, quotes, or references. This is a great read for Christians looking to embrace their creativity but who need help and support in understanding how to successfully achieve this role. I have to say I loved this author's passion, and it is this passion that sees them succeed in writing an inspirational, supportive, and thought-provoking book.

My Thoughts on Welcome to the Shivoo:
I have to start off by saying that I really don’t see myself as a creative person. Maybe it’s just because I don’t seem to have time to do a lot of creating, or maybe because I just don’t seem to be artistic. So, I wondered how this book would affect me. Would it just make me go, oh that’s a nice read or would I get something out of it?

First, this is a wonderful book. Second, maybe I am more creative than I thought! That being said, you don’t have to see yourself as creative to get something out of this book! Just give it a read and see how it impacts you.

When you read Welcome to the Shivoo you need to read it slowly and with the intention of learning and interacting with the book. I don’t agree with every point she makes but it is a good read. Maybe people who are more creative will get more out of it than I did.

The main point of the book seems to be that creative came before salvation and we all need to reach out to others through our own creativity and influence them for God.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

" Welcome to the Shivoo" by Laura Bartnick is not what I was expecting when I read the title. I thought it was going to be a comedy. Well, I was wrong. It is a book about creating.
So, once I figure that out, I was wondering what is a Shivoo, and I am happy to say that I wasn't kept wondering for long, because the author explains what it is within the first couple of pages. No, I am not going to tell you, you got to read and find the answer, like I did.

This book is to help you be more creative with your spiritual gifts and be more in turn with the one true Creator.

This book is filled with lots of Biblical scriptures and quotes from others.

If you are looking to add creativity to your art, writing a book or etc, then this is the book for you. This is not a book that someone would just read for entertainment but for instruction purposes.

I really encourage all of us to follow the advice on page 131, "Be intentional. Choose mentors and entertainment wisely. Fear God in all you read, watch, write and paint. " So I believe there is something we all can learn and apply from this book even if we aren't trying to be creative, because we are to mimick the Creator.

I was give a complementary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

I must be one of those people who don’t understand some things at first. The book was so confusing I didn’t grasp what it was about till half way through the book. I do know that God created each of us with gifts. Sometimes we don’t have confidence to use them. Along the way I did feel the book repeated some points which was unnecessary.

I know about creativity and how people struggle sometimes to shine in their gift. My husband is a very talented artist. He has air brushed murals for churches and homes. When I directed plays for Children’s Church he was my go to guy for sets. I have often seen him struggle with his gift and said he felt like he wasn’t good enough. Some of the points the author makes are encouraging and I appreciate the scriptures she uses in the book. The author gives examples from the Bible of creative people and it was nice to see a different look at these people.

At the end of the book I did feel encouraged and think the book would be a nice gift for someone. We all have gifts and God wants us to share those gifts to spread His Word.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A CREATIVE, A WRITER, A MEMBER OF THE MAKER COMMUNITY?

In the beginning, God created. Should this matter?

Do you find incredible value in your creativity, that is, a reason for being and doing that you could never imagine giving up? Okay then. This book will inspire you to join a spiritual party like no other.

Perhaps you’ve heard that the impulse to create is a reflection of the Creator’s image in you and His will for you. Your impulse to create is paramount! The chapters in this book will provide you pages of new perspectives for evaluating your craft. It will help you communicate what you experience with others. It will transform your creative future. Motivation. Spiritual Gifts. God’s own blessing.

My Thoughts: This is an interactive book for creative people to understand where their gift comes from or should I saw Who it comes from. To me, this is an interesting study for the creative types. It is not to be read all at once; the reader should work their way through this book, digesting each chapter and assignment slowly and carefully. This book is well thought out and the teachings are wonderful.

A deeply thoughtful, creative, intellectual, exploratory and detailed read. Written by a creative with an eye toward inspiring and motivating readers to seriously consider their own inherent creativity bestowed by their Creator. While not an easy nor quick read, Welcome to the Shivoo! Is nonetheless a worthy one. The author has created a piece of work that serves as a reminder of the why we create, and how we glorify our Creator when we create.

Bartnick provides an especially encouraging message in this quote:
“Being creative as a Christian is just as spiritual a discipline as giving to the poor or taking care of one’s parents in their old age.
Creativity is self-exploration in its rarest, raw forms. You are unique. What journey has God given to you to express to others?“
This one is full of nuggets to gather and savor. Enjoy!

“Welcome to Shivoo!” surprisedme. It wasn’t at all what I thought it would be. Working in a very creative industryI thought this book would be very helpful.  The past couple of years I have been feelinglost and not on the right path or is this just my self-confidence letting medown and telling me I am no good.
“Welcom to Shivoo!” is a philosophical type book. It contains a lot ofinformation to get you thinking about things, but it wasn’t a book I couldskim. I had to read some of the pages at least three times to figure out whatLaura Bartnick is trying to get at. I almost quit reading the book a coupletimes, but I am glad I didn’t because the middle to the end of the book iswhere I finally understood the direction she was going in. Like I said, it is aslow read, but it would be a good book to use as a resource into other personsview on our Creator and being creative.

I was given this book for a honest review.

Welcome to the Shivoo! is one of the most interesting books I have read in a long time, if ever. Laura Bartnik shows how God, our wonderful Creator, has gifted those among us the desire and the talent to imitate Him and create art that leads others to him. One of the deepest and pressing desires I have is to write and I gained a new perspective that will help me as I plan the characters of my future novels and use my writing to glorify Him. Her knowledge of the Bible shows in her choice of the scriptures used to demonstrate God’s creativity and how we, as creatives should mimic that creativity as it would please Him. I recommend that all Christians who write— whether it be fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or anything—make it a priority to read Welcome to the Shivoo! I know that you will gain a deeper perspective and that that it will add depth to your writing that hasn’t been there before.

Before I read the book, Welcome to the Shivoo, I heard a lecture that stressed that our goal should be to inspire and encourage others. This book does that. My happiest moments are when I create and get lost in the moment. Magic takes over and bliss happens. As a Christian woman I appreciate this gift from God. The joy I experience when I write or work on a project brings such fulfillment.

This book is an exploration of Biblical concepts to consider when I create. It is full of insights and as colorful inside as out. I was drawn to the book because of the beautiful cover. I knew nothing about it before I offered to review it other than I had time on my hands at the hospital with my mother.

I especially like the rules at the end of each chapter. They are a tidy summary.

This book is about Christian creators. There was a lot I enjoyed about this book--the summaries at the end of the chapters, some really great quotes on writing, some fantastic thoughts on creativity--and some things that confused me. I love that there was a Bible basis for a lot of this. Sometimes, though, I got lost as to how the subjects related to writing, art, etc. At some points, there wasn't a translation except for the author's own version, and I think biblical translation on one's own can be a hazy territory. This book is very different than others I have read, but there was some really good content within it, and I'm glad that I read it.

This is an interesting book for creatives and those who wish to have just a little more creativity in there lives. This book takes on a creative and Biblical based journey.

Based on the title I was expecting this to be a light-hearted maybe even comedic. Not the deeply thoughtful and intellectual book it is. If you're looking to rejuvenate the creative juices, then this is book to check out.

Welcome to the Shivoo offers a refreshing and encouraging perspective for Christian creatives. The words are woven together in a beautiful way, there are examples from scripture to support the main points, and action steps to be applied to the creative process.

Welcome to the Shivoo takes the reader on a journey that helps remind us that God is our Creator and He gave us gifts that we need to use. This book is not one to be quickly skimmed through but needs to be read with concentration.
Whether you are someone with outwardly crafting or creative tendencies or not, I feel this book has something to offer. As a child growing up, I always considered that my sister had all the artistic talent, yet as an adult I find myself blogging and crocheting. So apparently I also have some creative tendencies. So it is a matter of actively using the gifts God has given us. So check out this book for yourself.
I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.
