The Honorable Rogues #5

The Wallflower's Wicked Wager

Rate this book
He loved her beyond anything and everything—precisely why he couldn’t ever marry her. A wounded hero. Love—sentimental drivel for insipid, weak, feckless fools. Since an explosion ravaged Captain Morgan Le Draco’s face and cost him his commission in the Royal Dragoons, he’s fortified himself behind an impenetrable rampart of cynicism and distrust. Now destitute and shunned by the very society that once lauded his heroics, he’s put aside all thoughts of marrying and having a family. Until he risks his life to save a drowning woman. At once, Morgan knows Shona’s the balm for his tortured soul, but as a wealthy, titled noblewoman, she’s too far above his humble station and can never be his. An intrepid wallflower. Love—a treasured gift reserved for those beautiful of form and face. Scorned and ridiculed most of her adult life, Shona, Lady Atterberry believes she’s utterly undesirable and is reconciled to spinsterhood. She hides her spirited temperament beneath a veneer of gauche shyness, until a strapping, scarred stranger saves her life, and she can’t deny her immediate, powerful, and sensual attraction to him. Despite how ill-suited they are and innuendos that Captain Le Draco is a fortune-hunter, she cannot escape her growing fascination. Two damaged souls searching for love. Others are determined to keep them apart, and Shona is goaded into placing a wicked wager. One that sets her upon a ruinous path and alienates the only man who might have ever loved her. Is true love enough to put their pasts behind them, to learn to trust, and heal their wounded hearts? Warning: This book contains one devilish, seemingly irredeemable rogue, an on-the-shelf wallflower who dabbles in wicked wagers, an unexpected and most enticing swim in a lake, a villainess you’ll want to shove into said lake, and a cast of captivating secondary characters with their own tantalizing romantic tales.

Davenswood Court, Buckinhamshire August 1819

On the eve of her twenty-first birthday, at a house party, Shona, Lady Atterberry, is sitting in the greenhouse all by herself. Shone is socially inept, does not correspond to the ton’s standards of beauty, and she fled the usual tormentors to isolate herself to find peace and quiet. It’s become worse since on her birthday, Shona is to become a Lady Lord of Parliament, the Scottish equivalent to a barony, thus an important person, and wealthy to boot. And money-grabbing suitors and their mamas are now noticing her. Shona then sees a man who looks quite angry, then Mrs. Olson with her nincompoop of a son, Clarence, come within Shona’s earshot, and she flees. Unfortunately, clumsy girl that she is, Shona stumbles and falls in a lake. Fortuitously, the irate man she had noticed earlier jumps right into the water and saves her. Morgan Le Draco might not be pretty, but he is a gentleman, and he will not look away when someone is in distress. Morgan, a former Dragoon, is scarred, he lost an eye and some of his hearing in an explosion; he is also looking for work, any kind of work. He doesn’t have much left: no money, his life is empty, but his heart is in the right place. And for the first time, Shona is immediately comfortable with someone. Shona wants to be kissed, and that’s her wicked wager.

Shona is a klutz, she dreams of someone to love her, and she only sees the good in Morgan. Morgan is used to women averting their eyes, children running away, and is flabbergasted that Shona doesn’t seem to notice how disfigured he is, but sees only a lovely, charming, brave, respectful and very proud man. Morgan is nearly salivating at Shona’s unfashionable curves. It was lovely how both looked beyond appearances; both are used to being judged on how they look, not who they are, and they understand each other immediately.

When Shona and Morgan first meet, I had tears in my eyes; both see the good person behind the unfashionable façade, it is such a touching moment, especially when looking at the “beautiful people’s” behaviour. They also have difficult families to contend with. The descriptions are exceptionally vivid, in Ms. Cameron’s unmistakable colourful style. THE WALLFLOWER’S WICKED WAGER is a lovely romance of two misfits finding true love, and it will make your heart sigh with happiness.

Wicked wallflower, what more could you ask for?

I love a book that focuses on the couple and shares their story exclusively. Shona and Morgan have both lived through the fire and come out on the other side alone and unsure of themselves. They meet each other by accident at a house party. Collette Cameron ignites a fire between these two damaged people who need each other. Their fire burns bright.

Short, safe, and sweet. Not terribly developed, but not altogether skimpy. Now I want to read Sterling’s story. He’s such a good guy.

Captain Morgan Le Draco is devastated after a harrowing accident which altered his life forever he went from a handsome young man to a scarred unsightly beast. In a means to control him his father sold his commission with the Royal Dragoons. His father thinks this way he will have no choice but to help him run the family slave plantation- never will he be part of his fathers cruelty even if that means being destitute. On one of the last house parties that he's been invited he rescues a very curvaceous and most beautiful woman he's come across from certain drowning. He feels an attraction to the young woman who he later finds out that she's a Lady and an heiress he'd do well and stay away from her. Try as he might that seems impossible.
Shona is Lady Atterberry she's a wealthy heiress but not the typical ton debutant she's timid shy and kinda clumsy not a beauty and definitely not with a svelte figure that all the men seem to covet. She does have something every man want ......Money and a title. She's able to choose a husband if she so wishes she's of age but she won't be trapped into one by the money hungry desperate ones. She'll marry for LOVE!
Captain Morgan has captured her heart with his kindness and pain that's lurking in his eyes but she also feels alive in his presence and dares to be more than the timid mouse. Will a misunderstanding keep them apart or will she wager everything for Love!
I loved this story it totally pulled at my heart. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder the internal beauty is what shows outwards.
Well written characters that keep you entertained from the first page. Collette Cameron really knows how to keep you turning the pages.

I received a review copy of this novella.

I loved Morgan and Shona, the hero and heroine of this story. Although novella
length, the story didn't feel rushed to me. The hero and heroine spent a lot of time together and the reader is privy to their feelings for each other throughout. The characters are very likable and sympathetic.

I'm intrigued by Lord Sterling and am hoping he'll get his own story soon.

Sometimes a book comes along and quite simply takes your breath away. This is one of those books.
Shona is beautiful, curvy, kind and tainted by her parents' misdeeds. Society has been cruel to her. At a dreaded house party for a week, she is determined to keep to herself until she can return to her beloved Scotland.
When Morgan Le Draco saves her life after a fall in the lake, her life is forever changed. Morgan is disfigured from an accident. Refusing to follow in his father's footsteps, he is without funds or employment.
The connection between Shona and Morgan is instant. He sees her inner and outer beauty and she looks past his scars, straight into his heart.
Ms. Cameron has delivered a splendid book that confirms the belief that love at first sight exists. It warmed my heart and made me sigh and smile.
I received an ARC of this book. The choice to read and review it was all mine.

A truly wonderful story with that special touch of humor only Collette Cameron can add! Two wounded souls who meet, well, if you call meeting when Shona falls into the lake and Morgan jumps in to save her, meeting, then they met in the lake, hahaha. I love a good story with imperfect heroes and heriones. Collette writes beautifully of strong characters with honor and integrity. This is a perfect compliment to the A Waltz with a Rogue Series. If you love beautifully written regency romance with a HEA ending, then you'll love this book and all in this series. I received this book to give my honest opinion and review of.

My favorite line from this book is: "My beautiful Scottish lass, I love you so much, my heart aches. My thoughts are consumed with you. And if I adore you this much after such a short period of time, spending decades with you will be such a blessing, I can hardly comprehend its magnitude."

Amazingly romantic. Once again we are at the Wimpletons. This is the house party prior to the ball and our heroine is a Scottish wallflower Shona, Lady Atterbury who was okay with that. On her 21st birthday she gains a title and she inherits her estate. Now all the gentleman are after her and that's not a good thing. She hides herself in the green house, unfortunately one of these unwanted gentleman with his mamma no less try's to find her. In her escape she runs through the grounds and doesn't realize that there is a lake and she goes over a hill and down into the lake. Thank god the handsome gentleman who stirred her interest as he stormed by the green house was there to rescue her. Captain Morgan Le Draco has his own demons and he was a soldier and was hurt and disfigured in an accident. When he sees Shona tumble into the lake he immediately takes action. Like Shona he has emotional issues and during this house party we see vindictive ladies and handsome men vie for each of there attention. Will they overcome all the obstacles to find there way? It was a wonderful fast read and I just love "love at first sight". Of course the story has the right amount of angst and misunderstanding. A definite must read. Ms Cameron did it again.

Shona, Lady Atterberry is dreading the house party she is attending. Once it's over she will have passed her majority and be able to take up the control of her own estate. None of the eligible bachelors took any notice of her until they learnt of her inheritance. She has been bullied most of her life, and her curvy body is unfashionable enough to cause comments.
Captain Morgan Le Draco is badly scarred and at odds with his father. He refuses to accept money derived from slavery and is no longer in the military. He must find work so that he doesn't have to rely on the goodwill of his friends.
Two lonely and extremely self conscious people learning to adapt to a more positive outlook .
A sweet historical romance with wonderful characters. This is part of a series but each book can be read as a stand alone. You might meet up with the characters from the other stories.
A lovely story to restore your faith in human nature.
I loved it.

THE WALLFLOWER’S WICKED WAGER by Collette Cameron is another skillfully written story by this author. Set at Davenswood Court, Buckinghamshire in 1891. A WALTZ WITH A ROGUE novella.
Brilliantly and masterfully written story with flawed characters, raw emotions, and the the power of love. The hero is a ruggedly sexy, strong and protective. The heroine is feisty, a bit shy, has low self esteem, due to abuse by her mother, but she becomes brave and brazen, to say the least.

This is the story of Captain Morgan Le Draco, a wounded hero, who suffered horribly from fire, during the war, which scarred his face and Shona, a intrepid wallflower. Two damaged souls in search of love, find each other.
I was totally charmed by these characters.

A great story with all the drama, emotions and conflict, a reader would wish for in a Historical Romance. As always, Ms. Collette has some humorous moments included, which adds to the charms of this cute and compelling story. A must read!!

Ms. Cameron is one of my favorite Historical Romance authors. She writes with such enthusiasm, understanding of human emotions, and adds a touch of humor, that leaves the reader breathless. A not to miss read!

Collette Cameron has done it again!! A beautiful "Love at First Site" story that grips you immediately!
The two vulnerable characters, Shona & Morgan are both victims of gruel family members and a few selfish society members. After attending a week long party, Shona & Morgan spend every moment they can together. While gossip flows the two must learn to trust the "love" they both feel so they can overcome their hurtful past. Ms Cameron fills both characters with such deep and intense feelings, that as you actually feel their pain and struggles. Shona starts off as a very timid mouse; however, by the end of the story she truly gets up her courage and fights for what she wants. She wants Morgan. Morgan, scarred and blind in one eye, has nothing to offer her. He refuses to accept anything from his father so therefore is penniless and jobless. His pride and low self worth prevents him from accepting Shona's love (and money since she is a heiress). Shona does not give up! Her love and courage takes over and convinces Morgan he is very very worthy! While a short story, it packs one heck of a punch! You will not be able to put it down!! Very well written!!

The Wallflower's Wicked Wager ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️by Collette Cameron

Shona, Lady Atterberry was scorned most of her life by her mother and uncle. She grew up believing herself to be a fat undesirable woman. Shona never thought she would find someone who loved her for who she was. She never let her true feelings come to the surface. She remained very shy and reserved fearful of all strangers.

When she is invited with her cousins to a long country visit at the estate of Lord and Lady Wimpelton she dredged what may lay ahead. It is on this visit she tries to escape the scorn of her peers and she finds herself tripping and falling in a lake. This is where former Captain Morgan Le Draco jumps in to save her. Morgan himself has been ridiculed for his appearance. He suffered from an explosion scarring him and him losing an eye and having to wear a patch. Its is when these two accidentally meet they each find a mutual attraction. Morgan sees her a a beautiful woman quite above his meager station and Shona see a gallant gentlemen who is most handsome in her eyes.

Ms Cameron brings in her talent as an author when this two misfits find a deep love. The road blocks thrown at them seem insurmountable but their inner strength prevails. This is a beautifully crafted romance proving for everyone there is a someone. Perseverance is the mantra here.

The Wallflower's Wicked Wager is the story is Shona Atterberry, a young Scottish woman who suffered years of abuse from her crazy mother, sent to live with the aunt of her half sister which her mother plotted to kill for her fortune. Made to believe she is a timid, socially awkward , dowdy wallflower, Shona yearns to find the love of a man who will make her feel like the beautiful woman she is in her heart. One who will help her fulfill her role as Lady Lord of Parliament, and be the woman she was meant to be, despite her past. In comes Morgan Le Draco, a man with scars of his own, who gives up his birthright to his father's wealth, because it came at the hands of slavery. Having no income thanks to his injuries and his father ending his commission in the Dragoons, Morgan finds himself invited to his friends house party and he attends as he tries to figure out his life. One accident leads these two people to meet and has one saves the others life, love begins to bloom. I loved this story and Collette Cameron is a master at bringing together two lost souls in a witty, fun, and emotional way. I highly recommend this HEA and the others in the series. I was gifted with an advanced copy of this story and happily give this recommendation!

This is the newest in the Waltz with a Rogue series of novellas. I’ve read them all and this one is my favorite. I don’t give a lot of novellas 5 stars but this one deserves it. The hero and heroine will tear your heart out.

Shona, Lady Atterbury*, is attending a house party before leaving England for her Scottish home. She has had a horrible childhood and is looking forward to turning 21 in a few days and controlling her estate and fortune. Her half-sister’s husband has been managing the estate and increased her wealth. Determined to remain inconspicuous she decides to take a walk hoping the heat will keep the other guests inside. However, an unwanted suitor discovers her and she takes off running towards the shade trees only to trip and fall into the lake. It’s difficult to swim in a dress and she is rescued by Morgan Le Draco.

Morgan is an injured ex-soldier with problems. No job, no money. He refuses to manage his father’s Caribbean sugar plantation as he is opposed to slavery. He’s also very attracted to Shona, not knowing she’s wealthy.

Since this is a novella, it’s easy to say too much and ruin the story. I loved it and highly recommend it! Thank you, Collette, for giving me an ARC. *Scottish title that can be held by a woman.

The Wallflower's Wicked Wager is a fun novella that will put a smile on your face as you read.

Lady Shona just doesn't fit into society. Suffering from years of abuse from her mother, has left her with little confidence to deal with scorn of English society. Lady Shona believes no one could love her and she just wants to hide away on her estate in Scotland. Captain Morgan is a lost soul without a home. He lost is purpose when his father resigned his commission and has felt the rejection of society due to accident that has caused disfigurement to his face.

Shona and Morgan meet quite unexpectedly, and it is love at first sign for these two. I will admit I'm not a huge fan of these types of stories, but Collette create characters that have suffered so much that when they meet you an tell like recognizes like. There is no false note in there instant love, just two lost souls who finally found love and acceptance for who they are.

The Wallflower's Wicked Wager is the latest release from Bestselling author Collette Cameron. It is the tale of a war ravaged captian who, through no fault of his own, has lost his commission. It is at this low point of his life that he meets the woman of his dreams. But what can he offer her? Nothing, and that's exactly why he cannot marry her. Being an heiress, she's far too above his station.

Lady Shona Atterberry is a confirmed spinster. Although a rare beauty, she does not meet the standard willowy form and porcelain features befitting a lady of her time. Shona is curvy and kissed by the sun, she's a bit of a free spirit. One evening she's tricked into a "wicked wager" that sets her on the path of ruination and threatens to keep her from the only man she's ever loved.

Will love find a way?

When is a wallflower not a wallflower? In the case of Lady Shona Atterberry, she has never really had the opportunity to become a wallflower as she has never had a proper season. She is curvy and unfamiliar with all of the niceties (or not so niceties as the case may be) of the ton. But it has just become known that she has both a title and a fortune, so is now being pursued by any number of fortune hunters. As she flees the company of one such suitor and his mother, she falls into a nearby lake – and is rescued by a dashing (at least in her eyes) stranger

Captain Morgan Le Draco has come to the house party at the behest of the host, who happens to be his good friend. Disfigured in an explosion, he is surprised when Shona shows no shock or repulsion by his scar and eyepatch. In fact, she seems to be as attracted to him as he is to her. As their attraction continues to grow, they must overcome doubts and other obstacles created by others who want to prevent their relationship.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and it has become my favorite in the series so far. It has wonderfully-written characters and is full of warmth, humor and romance. If I could give this one more than five stars, I certainly would.

Charming Love Story.
Two damaged people, Shona, Lady Atterberry and Captain Morgan Le Draco meet at a house party, when he rescues her from drowning in the lake. Both feel an instantaneous pull towards each other, which encourages the timid Shona to stand up for herself and Morgan to believe that a relationship is possible despite his scarring. The events take place over the course of a week and concludes with a HEA.

The Wallflower's Wicked Wager continues the Waltz with a Rogue series by Collette Cameron. I have loved each book in the series and was equally happy with this one! The story unfolds after Captain Morgan saves Shona from an unfortunate fall in the lake. Collette Cameron tells a wonderful story of two broken souls brought together by this one incident, and one wicked wager. Her writing is full of humor and emotion. You will be very happy for Morgan and Shona while wanting to reach into the book and slap a couple other characters! I highly recommend this 5 star book - you will be happy you read it! I received an ARC and gladly offer my honest opinion.

Above blurb summarizes the story well, so I'll just tell you the reasons why I loved it.

First, I really loved the characterization of the two leads. We not only have a broken hero, but our heroine was almost, if not more, broken than the hero. The backstory of these two was heartbreaking. I thought the "love at first sight" trope well represented with Shona and Morgan. The attraction and tension between the two was so well written it jumps off the pages.

Second, I thoroughly enjoyed the plot which had enough drama and conflict to populate two full length books, let alone this novella. The road to their happily ever after was fraught with a lot of complications, but I thought their perseverance prevailed and they both got stronger by the experience.

Third and last, but not the least, this story had a lot of heart as well as humor, which combined with a fast pace, makes for a wonderful and entertaining read.

As usual Ms. Cameron's richness and depth of the characters is what keeps bringing me back to her writing and I hope you’ll give her a try. I promise you'll not be disappointed!

This was a very entertaining read with amusing banter. The two main characters, Shona and Morgan, both had a dreadful parent and had suffered as a result. The interaction between them was very engaging. It was pleasing to see Shona develop and come into her own. There was also a brief glimpse of characters from previous books although this didn't detract from the storyline, but it's always good to catch up with what has been happening with them. This was an excellent read that I highly recommend.

I liked this story so much I did not put it down after I started it. Glad it was a quick read! I loved the fact that the hero and heroine were not perfect but were tortured, weary souls who recognized each other as soon as their eyes met. I enjoyed the way they overcame their obstacles.

What an unforgettable tale! Cameron weaves romance with adventure, heartfelt emotion with the perfect touch of comic relief. I love the way that she weaves world building throughout the entire tale, allowing readers to completely lose themselves in the story.

The characters are completely charming. They were so easy to get to know and so much fun to live this story through. Cameron's atypical heros had some amazing chemistry and were the type of people that I truly enjoyed getting to know. They stole my heart from the very beginning.

As a whole this was a remarkable romance with a lighthearted feel that still managed to pack a punch. It's one that I can't wait to read again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others.

I loved this story by Collette Cameron! It is the fifth book in her A Waltz with a Rogue series.
It would only make sense for Shona and Morgan to gravitate to one another because of their pasts. Both experienced harshness and cruelty from a parent and are seen as less than worthy in society at no fault of their own.
Now that Shona has recently gained a title means nothing to her. She doesn't see an issue with Morgan's so-called lacking in society because of unemployment or a place to live because he swears never to step foot on his father's plantation. All she cares about his how gentle and kind he is to her, but Morgan has nothing to offer and feels that he must walk away from her no matter how much he has come to love her.

I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

Collette Cameron does a great job of creating two characters who are shunned by the ton and shows that you are more than appearances. Shona, Lady Atterberry was abused by her mother and is rounded when other ladies are sticks. In addition she is shy. Now she is an heiress but even money isn't enough to keep people from mocking her - if not to her face than definitely behind her back.
Morgan LeDraco was a Captain in the war but was injured in an accident leaving him with a scarred face and without one eye. Where others see a monster - Shona sees beyond the scars to the man within.
This is a sweet story of love at first sight and no one deserves a Happily Ever After more than these two people.

I received a free book and voluntarily chose to review it. Loved this story. My strong woman that I look for in a story isn’t there at the beginning. I found out why further into the story. Loved the alliteration of the title. I was expecting a different type of wager. A sweet romance.

Fifth novella in Ms. Cameron’s A Waltz with a Rogue series, this makes for a great read and doesn’t disappoint.

Take a wounded and scarred officer, add a shy but feisty wallflower that has developed low-esteem of her and then add a good dose of conflict and drama, lots of emotions and a dash of humor and you end up with a compelling story. That’s what The Wallflower’s Wicked Wager is.
But, what I like most about Ms. Cameron’s story is that the characters aren’t perfect – in fact, they’re like people in real life and they prove that beauty is, indeed, in the eye of the beholder.

Please note that a copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments represent my own opinion.

An ex-soldier and a wallflowers' true love story

What's not to love about a scarred soldier that believes he's unlovable and a wallflower that believes she's headed for the spinster shelf?
The journey for them to realize the possibility that they are truly lovable and the lifetime of love ahead of them is full of Ms Cameron's witty humor and of course all the tricks of others to thwart them along the way.
Another very successful Regency love story that I whole heartedly recommend! I've become a follower of Collette Cameron's unusual humor and ability to weave a tale that stays with you long after the last page is turned.

Read the 5th book first by mistake but loved it. The story of Shona and Morgan was beautifully written. Morgan terribly scared from a freak explosion has no money or hope for a job after what his vial father did to him during his recovery. Shona is a shy woman trying to fit in, even though she has family and friends in high society she just doesn't fit in. It doesn't help that her mother was sent to Australia for her part in trying to kill Shonas sister. When both Morgan and Shona end up at the same house party and he saves her life from drowning things take a turn for the better. A wonderful story, can't wait to read more!!
