Formerly titled Blythe: Schemes Gone Amiss

A tormented marquis. A vivacious vixen. A deadly foe.

Dragged to London for a Season, Blythe Culpepper is dismayed to learn her guardian has enlisted the devilishly attractive Lord Leventhorpe—the one man she detests—to assist with her launch into Polite Society. Since their first encounter, hostile looks and cutting retorts abound whenever they meet. Still, she cannot deny the way her body reacts when he’s near.

Tristan, the austere and controlled Marquis of Leventhorpe, usually avoids social gatherings. So why, against his better judgement, does he agree to aid his closest friend in presenting the Culpeppers to Society? Might it be because one particular fascinating Culpepper Miss stirs more than his interest? Blythe taxes him to his limits with her sharp wit and even sharper tongue. Yet, he cannot deny the beauty captivates him like no other.

However, when a past enemy comes calling, using Blythe to settle old scores, Tristan must decide if restoring his family’s tarnished honor—something he’s worked toward for years—is more important than winning the heart of the woman he’s come to love.

There is something so s[pecial about a book that allows you to see the deeper side of the characters. This was the case with Blythe. Not only could we see what Blythe was thinking and feeling, we could see what was going on in Tristan's head and heart as well. That coupled with the laughter that kept cropping up as I read, made me absolutely adore this book.

The story was really quite unique and I loved all the side characters and I can't wait to read their stories too. Cameron has brought so many fun parts about Historical romance to light on the pages of Blythe. I wasn't able to stop reading this, I wanted to see what happened. I wanted the emotions to continue and I wanted the bad guys to get their comeuppance.

What a delightful and enchanting read. What lovable characters and what a brilliant series.

The Culpepper Family fun and mayhem continues! This book starts exactly where the first left off. Blythe and her family enter the glitzy haute ton, and she does not care for all the restrictions, false praise and posturing. She loves country, fresh air and freedom but for her family she will endure one season. Blythe is unfortunately a bit naive where men are concerned, and she falls for lies of another man but is able to come out of it unscathed. I liked the moment when she realized there was more to Tristan than a brooding taciturn man she met in the country. So with no effort at all they become fast friends and develop fondness for each other.

Tristan is a man haunted by nightmares of his youth. He may have a title and all the comforts his wealth can afford to buy but he has no peace. And on top of that he has met the most outspoken woman in creation - Miss Blythe Culpepper. She is opinionated, independent and the most beautiful woman of his acquaintance. After initial desire for her Tristan develops feeling far deeper. But scheming debutantes and foes from his past nearly ruin his one chance at happiness.

This time two young people had a chance to get to know each other, to see what was hiding under the polite facade that they presented to the outside world. There were funny, dangerous and tender moments. This is very low steam and mild angst romance but it is offset by engaging characters and hilarious situations. I enjoyed it immensely! I recommend it!

Loved this one, too..

Another great romance from Collette Cameron. I just loved all the “B’s”: Blythe, Brooke, Brette, Blaire and Blaike. And I loved the other players: Tristan, Raven, Whitehouse, Maddox, Francine and Hawk. I despised Burlington, Rosemary Sanford and Phillips, who got exactly what he deserved, but it would have been better if he’d died.

What little was told about why Tristan could be so cold and unfeeling was pretty awful, it just showed what a truly horrible his father was. BUT as he drew closer to Blythe the more his walls came down. This really was a very good love story but also a story showing just how depraved men could be way back then and how the “ton” were never held accountable for their wicked deeds.

There was no sex but there was love and affection and passion. You don’t need sex when you have all that. At least, I don’t.

As to the narration: Again, Stevie Zimmerman was fantastic. Her male voices are wonderful and her emotions are fabulous. I love listening to her.

The first sentence of SCHEMES GONE AMISS made me giggle, and from then on I was completely under Collette Cameron’s spell. Blythe Culpepper has never felt so awkward since she’s come to London for the Season; she’s not looking for a husband, and she’d much rather go back to the family farm where she hails from. She’s a straightforward young woman, and her ways do not endear her to the Ton. To make matters worse, the person chosen to oversee her début is Tristan, Lord Leventhorpe. Their previous encounters have been prickly, and they’ve exchange unkind words. However, Tristan is rather taken by Blythe’s fire and outspokenness; she’s a much welcome change. They eventually manage to become friendlier, but Blythe wishes it were more. But when ambitious and unscrupulous acquaintances conspire against both Blythe and Tristan, they come to each other’s rescue.

SCHEMES GONE AMISS is an extremely solid and compelling story, and there is one particular plot twist that literally had me shivering. Ms. Cameron meticulous attention to historical detail enriches the story while never being a hindrance to the flow of the narrative, her vocabulary dazzles, especially when it comes to the choice insults Blythe and Tristan exchange. The characters are well-rounded, the secondary ones are as interesting as the principals, and there are some perfectly charming and amusing passages involving animals; who could forget that wayward cow or Freddy the fat, old Corgi. There is also a secondary romance, apart from Blythe and Tristan’s, which will melt your heart. Tristan and Blythe’s romance evolves over time, out of the respect they have for each other in addition to their mutual attraction, which they don’t quite understand themselves, which I thought was an interesting touch. And let’s not forget Ms. Cameron’s luminous, eloquent and precise prose, and the delightful and witty dialogues. SCHEMES GONE AMISS is an enchanting romance, with charismatic characters, and epic turns of event. Absolutely wonderful!

Flimflam and goose-butt feathers! What an absolutely unforgettable novel. This is regency romance at its finest. The setting comes to life under Cameron’s talented pen. She weaves a world steeped in the past, taking readers back in time to experience the lives of her characters for a short while. The plot was intriguing and realistic. The romance was very real, yet not very easy for the characters.

The Misses Culpepper are most definitely my favourite romance heroines of all times. Blythe is priceless from the get-go. I love her reactions to things. I enjoyed getting to know the many sides of Tristan’s character. There was just so much to love, without him being too perfect. Surrounded by their friends and family, this was the perfect cast to get lost with.

Collette Cameron makes romance fun. I laughed from the beginning to the end of this novel, all the while falling in love with these remarkable characters. This is one of those novels that leaves you smiling and hugging your book when it’s over, not ready to admit you’ve reached the end yet completely satisfied.

Ms Cameron requests us to note down our thoughts on public media after reading her books, so here are my honest thoughts :~

For me, she needs to simplify her writing. I know many readers have given 4 and 5 star ratings for all her books and must love her extremely descriptive, flowery style. I don't. I found it annoying to plow through - the paragraphs so overladen with superfluous words, it was almost painful to read. There was a good story buried there - it's a pity I couldn't dig it out. I really wanted to, as I hate giving negative reviews. It's not that the actual writing is bad - it's excellent - it's the flow of the writing, the 'readability' of the story that I have major issues with.

Ditch the dictionary and thesaurus and KISS (keep it simple stupid) I like to use my imagination when reading, not have all the blanks filled in. I have read several of her books now and my opinion is the same for all of them. Please don't let my review stop you from purchasing her books, you may well love her style as many readers do. 2.5 stars

I waited patiently for book two of the Misses Culpepper. I eagerly devoured this book from start to finish and I greedily want more! Collette’s uncanny ability to draw the reader in never fails and I always enjoy reading her work. She writes about women who are strong, but yet have a naivete’ that surrounds them. The Culpepper's are such women. This book focuses on Blythe. I need to mention that all the women in the family have names that start with the letter B, to the chagrin of the men in their lives.

This story takes place in London around the 1820s. Of course when reading about romance stories set around this time, it is best to keep in mind that the Beau Monde is considered its own character. The gossips and wagging tongues are always there and many times, the characters decisions are based on this aspect.

Since Brook's husband has become Blythe's legal guardian, she finds herself constantly in the presence of Society. Balls and outings are a bit too much for a woman who is used to poverty and living in the country. It’s a stark contrast and Blythe finds Society's standards too demanding. However, she does it for her sister Brooke and for her future prospects and well being. The one thing that aggravates her is Tristan, Lord Leventhorpe. Of course, their mutual dislike and hidden attraction makes for the main entertainment. It wouldn’t be a Collette Cameron story without intrigue, a nasty harridan, and a villain. She provides all of that and more. The inner monologues of her characters are also entertaining and well written. Here is Blythe confused about Tristan after spending some time in his company:

“The transformation from dour lord to amused rapscallion causes Blythe’s heart to stutter oddly. Who was the real man? The affable chap who laughed easily or the caustic fellow? What had caused his prickly façade?”

Now, the reader will find out exactly why Tristan is the way he is, but my one concern was that it was not obvious to me if he actually did confide in her later on. His inner monologue alluded that he would tell her, but I guess we have to take that at face value. That part was not concluded, but it really did not deter from the story at all. The major plot points were tied up neatly.
Since this is book 2 in the series, it is readable as a standalone. But to understand the family dynamics and their pasts, start with Wagers Gone Awry. Now I have to wait patiently again for the next book.

#2 in the intriguing "Conundrums of the Misses Culpepper", but can be read as a stand alone. Fast paced tale during the Regency England era, with schemes, and romance. Well written with engaging and interesting characters. Readers will find themselves engrossed in the opinionated, confident Miss Blythe Culpepper. Schemers find themselves in cohorts with each other, but will their schemes be flaunted by our dashing hero, Lord Leventhorpe?
Although, our H/H find themselves hostile to each other, they also find their bodies are very much attracted to each other, but can lust find a HEA between these two very different characters? Will trying to flaunt a scheme, compromise, and disgrace Blythe or will she be saved by an unexpected hero? You MUST pick up and read this fascinating, complicated, engrossing, passionate, very entertaining and most enjoyable read! An engrossing story from the first page to the last page and long after you have finished reading.
Once again, Ms. Cameron, will have her fans turning pages. She is an amazing storyteller, one who draws the reader into a different time and place. Another grand Historical Romance adventure! A must read for fans of Regency England, Historical Romance, adventure and readers who simply enjoy an enjoyable and satisfying read. Ms. Cameron's storytelling just keeps getting better and better. Highly recommended!

Sparks flew when Blythe Culpepper first met Tristan, Marquis of Leventhorpe in Book 1 of the Conundrums of the Misses Culpepper. Blythe has a lively temper and the red headed Tristan loves to goad her, but in London, both find attributes to admire in each other and their feelings begin to deepen. However, due to past humiliation Tristan keeps Blythe at arms length until a blackguard assaults her virtue and he comes to her rescue. The language in this book is not as coarse as in the first, though passages such as, "Next thing she knew, the perky pair would scramble from her bodice's lace edge and wave a jaunty hello" do seem rather out of place.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.

The Marquis and The Vixen was originally entitled Blythe: Schemes Gone Amiss. This is book two in the Conundrums of the Misses Culpepper Collection by Collette Cameron. I have thoroughly enjoyed this audible book. Stevie Zimmerman does a fabulous job bringing Cameron’s characters to life. Blythe Culpepper is taken to London to have her season among the Ton. But her guardian’s close friend Lord Leventhorpe is to act as a chaperone, and Blythe detests him. This is a classic enemy to lovers trope that I adore. Lord Leventhorpe is a quiet man and greatly misunderstood. But he and Blythe don’t mix, and they seem to bring out the worst in each other. “Looming several inches above her, Lord Leventhorpe’s chest - a thick, wide wall of irile maleness - blocked her view. Tempted to shift away, she forced her feet to stay planted. He was the largest man she’d ever met, and as one of Heath’s closest friends, she must learn to tolerate Lord Leventhorpe’s intimidating presence. Surely sainthood and a seat at the Lord’s Table awaited her if she managed the Herculean task. The auburn-haired devil enjoyed provoking her, and like a nincompoop, she regularly succumbed to his goading.”
Cameron infuses a healthy dose of humor in her romances and this one is no exception. Always a fan of Ms. Cameron’s work.

This Culpepper is a classic. Blythe and Tristan, the Marquis Leventhorpe have knocked heads in the past...In fact she doesn't like him one bit. Except when he is charming, smells good and dresses so nicely! Which is 95 percent of the time. Blythe fights the attraction and Tristan does his best not to have any emotions. He is still haunted by the past. One particular nightmare keeps rearing its ugly head and Tristan is desperate to keep it hidden from Blythe. Why simply because to him she is perfection and he fears she will think him even lower than a snake. When the past finally makes it appearance Blythe is there to protect him but inadvertently causes a bit of an uproar. One she is sure she can get out of but really doesn't want to. She knows Tristan and for some reason wants to protect him. What Tristan fears most has now been outed and he is not so upset and willing to see Blythe rescue him. Even if it costs him his freedom (bachelorhood) ...he is all for it!

Along are the Earl's good friends including Tristen, Lord Leventhorpe who has always made Blythe the shrew for some reason. With one gentleman counting Blythe and a scheming debutante trying to entrap Tristen, the emotions abound. Tristen keeps his emotions close due to trauma in his younger life., but cannot help being protective of the feisty Blythe. We met Blythe Culpepper in the first book of this series in which her cousin, Brooke, marries Heath, Earl of Ravensdale. They decide her sister and cousins should have a London season. Heath talks his friends into helping make the girls a success.
However, Blythe is not so happy dealing with Tristan, Lord Leventhorpe. She believes him arrogant and humorless and does not like the agitated feelings he causes her. But does she really know him? Circumstances throw them together and they discover the truth about each other.
I don't write plot spoilers, but I do think you will enjoy this light, quick read. I look forward to the rest of the girls getting their HEA.

I like it.

This is the second book in the series that I have read, so far each one it different. Many authors reuse the same basic plot and theme for each book with in a series... the hero meets the damsel, the damsel gets into trouble, the hero swoops in. Yeah ok most books are that basic way but Collette Cameron has placed enough plot twits and created vastly different stories between the two books that I have read. I'm excited to read more of the series and I hope I don't get bored, like I did with the last series I read, (not from the same author).

An outspoken heroine, who shares her opinion no matter what society dictates for proper behavior of a lady. A hero, who is unsure how to deal with a woman who breaks the rules, even though he is incredibly attracted to her. The fall in love despite, appearing to loathe each other at first. I loved the schemes and impediments to their happily ever after that come up throughout the story, it made them really work for finally being together.

Blythe: Schemes Gone Amiss - I was happy to see so many of the characters from book one make an appearance in this story. Blythe is a strong-willed woman that longs to return to the country and is unimpressed by all of the gaudy display of wealth. Tristin has his own misgivings of the gatherings but agrees to aid in the Culpeppers presentation to the ton. I would have enjoyed the story more if it hadn't been for so many witty words and phrases. To me, it bogged down the story and made it hard to focus.

Someone call State Farm because I. Am. Wrecked.

This book doesn't have a whole lot of steam in it (sorry!) but the plot of the story MORE than makes up for it. I absolutely adored this book cover-to-cover: Blythe is AMAZING. She's fierce, she does things on her own terms and she lives life the way that she wants. Tristan is a troubled peer who is bound and determined to live under this gruff, grumpy facade and push away anyone who tries to get in. He dealt with parents who, one was a philanderer and the other was a Disneyland parent, trying to get Tristan to grow up before his time (there's quite a bit of sexual assault in this book, both with Tristan as a 13-year-old boy and Blythe, as an adult). He didn't have a great role model for a healthy marriage or family life so he's not inclined to explore that with anyone any time soon. Blythe, being the powerhouse that she is, shakes and rattles his cage until he opens up. And when he falls, he falls HARD.

Sexual assault aside, there are some mind-alteringly good scenes in this book. The scene when Tristan goes to walk his dogs (mentioned once but never mentioned again - where did they go?) and he finds Blythe and Freddy trying to corral a cow. The scene with Blythe / Tristan at Gunter's. Everything about her birthday ball? *chef's kiss* The 3rd act conflict with the reverend and the inn? LOVED it.

Seriously, I laughed, I teared, I swooned. Their book is the best so far!

Watch out London! The Culpepper Misses have arrived at the dismay of Blythe Culpepper. Having arrived in London with her sister, brother-in-law & cousins Blythe is being introduced to the ton when she’d much rather be in the country and away from a very annoying Marquis. The man sets off her temper like no other, if there was only a way to avoid the man but alas, he is her brother-in-law’s best friend so he’ll always be a presence. Unless she can get through this season & retire to the country as she has no aspirations to wed. Until she meets a gentleman who could possibly change her plans. That is until she overhears a title grabbing “lady” & her mother plot to trap Tristan into marriage. Is this the catalyst that will have Blythe realizing exactly what those fireworks mean?

Tristan, Marquis of Leventhorpe, has led a very controlled life. Something from his childhood haunts him still & he avoids commitment of any kind. Which is soon tested by the fiery Blythe Culpepper, sister-in-law to his best friend. Whenever they are together the room vibrates with electricity. A long time enemy threatens Blythe’s safety which is the catalyst that makes Tristan realize what she means to him.

As one man’s stupidity, an enemy & title grabbing schemers will Blythe & Tristan realize what they mean to each other? Can Tristan let go of the past in order to be happy?

Another hit by the extremely talented Collette Cameron that will have you laughing & crying all at the same time. Her wit combined with the strength of her characters will draw you in & not let you go. Looking forward to her next installment to see which Culpepper Miss has me laughing out loud.

This is a review for SCHEMES GONE AMISS; Book 2 CONUNDRUMS OF THE MISSES CULPEPPER Series. Although it can be read as a standalone book, I would advise reading book one which is WAGERS GONE AWRY; it will make this book easier to follow due to so many main characters involved not to mention all the Misses Culpepper first names starting with the letter ‘B’.
Collette Cameron has such an eloquent way of writing. I haven't come across another author who has such unique, witty phrases.
You can't help but laugh throughout the book beginning with the first phrase: "Flimflam and goose-butt feathers!” Now when I say this, remember the title of the book...hint, hint!!
Blythe Culpepper does not want to go to London, she just wants to go back to living on the family farm that the Misses Culpepper have been running for the past several years, but is forced to go to London for her Come Out along with the other Misses Culpepper. Well, she has one thought, get these two months over with and then she can get back to the country and be happy.
Tristan, Marquis of Leventhorpe would rather stay in the country and avoid social gatherings after being traumatized at a young age but is talked into helping his friend in London with the Come Out of the Misses Culpepper. Well we all know that Blythe Culpepper and Tristan have a history of verbal sparring from book one that continues in this book.
The barbs fly,
the sparks fly,
the tempers flare,
people get in each others hair!
Read the book folks!!! You will be sorry if you don't.
Once again, Collette Cameron has written an excellent book. I look forward to the next book.
