Nick is fed up with life and aggravated by the simple-minded people who believe in a supreme being in spite of all the agony and chaos around them. How can they have the audacity to say their God is good? Written in story form and ending with the author's personal journey, this book is a good gift for an agnostic or atheist friend. It can also be used to strengthen the faith of a Christian believer.
Gary Miller was raised in California and today lives with his wife Patty and family in the Pacific Northwest. Gary works with the poor in developing countries and directs the SALT program for Christian Aid Ministries. This program offers business and spiritual teaching to those living in chronic poverty, provides small loans, sets up local village savings groups, and assists them in learning how to use their God-given resources to become sustainable.
A very quick read. I read it in one setting and I'm a slow reader. In a fiction story, Mr. Miller tackles hard questions about God and Christianity. Why does a loving God permit evil to happen in the world? Why are churches full of hypocrites? How can ignorant people believe in a god they can't see? Isn't Christianity just a crutch for weak-minded people? Where is this good, loving god when I really need him? Science proves that there is no creator but that the earth evolved over billions of years. Why can't these Christians just accept the evident, proven truth? The main thing I liked about the book is that the author didn't give any pat "Christianize" answers. This is a powerful little book and I highly recommend it.
“And the question you should focus on right now is this: is Jesus Christ who he said he is? And when you answer that question, answers to other questions will become clear.”
A poignant vignette that uses fictitious characters to present spiritual truths. Nick’s life is imploding and he’s even contemplating suicide as a means of escape from all the pain when he crosses paths with Andy, the local bike shop owner. Andy’s non-threatening demeanor and a strategically hung sign in his shop proclaiming “God is Good” spur on conversations between the two that cause Nick to begin questioning his scornful beliefs about Christianity.
The story doesn’t offer pat answers, but rather provides space for those who have questions to wrestle with the realities of life and how that harmonizes with the Christian claim that God is good. The example of Andy and the group of Christians from his church is a powerful and inspiring reminder that the way we live our everyday lives matters. Overall, a quick and thought-provoking read!
It was an okay book. It was short and a fast read. Very true about all the bad things that are happening in our time. It might get you to think there is a good God.
