On the day that Jeff Ryder learns he is going to be made a partner at Warrick, Thompson, and Hayes, his past catches up with him. The State Bar of California accuses him of coaching witness Marty Lewis to lie seven years earlier while he was working as a prosecutor in order to convict small-time con man, Dillon Reese, of the attempted murder of police officer Christopher Rafferty, a former Navy SEAL.
Jeff loses his million-dollar lifestyle, but sets up his own law office, determined to clear his name, by proving Reese is the shooter. Jeff discovers that Chris was wearing defective body armor made by Armor Up Corporation on the night he was shot. Jeff persuades Chris and his wife Beth to bring a negligence suit against Armor Up and the San Diego Police Department for millions in damages. Jeff forms a deep friendship with Chris, but that friendship is challenged with Jeff falls in love with Beth.
On the eve of proving that he never coached Lewis to lie, Jeff is arrested for a double murder. If he uses his alibi, Chris and Beth will be destroyed.
I was born in the South where everyone is a storyteller. I wrote my first story at age 11 and my first novel at age 13. I have been writing ever since. I have worked as a writing teacher, an editor, and as an attorney. In addition to writing I love music. I have played clarinet since I was almost too small to hold the instrument. Now that my three children are grown, I spend a lot of time with my Golden Retrievers, Melody and Rhythm.
If you like to read legal thrillers, this book is for you.
Story goes back and forth, to understand and develop the characters. Also make us guess who is behind all this. Jeff is accomplished attorney, hothead, arrogant and parts acting out emotionally. As much as you don't like him, you'll feel sorry for him. Veteran of Afghanistan war, SEAL team member, now in wheelchair, quadriplegic. His wife acts like a love struck teenager. Lots of people around to help them, some of them have their issues. Many characters for us keep guessing, ending will surprise you.
I didn't enjoy this book. It was more like "I just want to get though this" rather than "I can't wait to see what happens next". The premise seemed unlikely and the story didn't flow. The improvement in Jeff Ryder's character felt contrived and his constant questioning of his "change" was irritating. The ending felt rushed, like the writer wanted to be done with the book and tied it all up in a bow that made no sense (at least not to anyone who has read a good legal thriller). I don't enjoy writing critical reviews of writers because I appreciate the effort that goes into writing a book, but I just did not enjoy this book. With that said, judge for yourself.
This book grabbed me right from the prologue. I wanted to know how Jeff Ryder, hotshot Lawyer on the brink of becoming a partner in a prestigious legal firm, found himself arrested on a serious charge on 20th May 2016. How did he find himself in the current situation? Was he guilty of the crime he was being accused of or had he been framed? If he was innocent who was responsible and why? After the prologue the book runs through the story to its conclusion, but first Chapter One takes us back about 8 months to 18th September 2015 just before Jeff’s problems began…. There are plenty of characters that interact with Jeff and his problems throughout the story. I liked how Deborah segments the book concentrating on particular characters in each segment without the plot losing integrity the story remaining fluid throughout. The intriguing plot is a twisted mess of legal manoeuvering, court action, manipulation, life, lies and betrayal. The biggest betrayals only become apparent when in the later chapters the plot takes a shocking twist leading to important revelations and a huge shake-up. A must read novel. Brilliant!.
What an incredible thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat page turning as fast as you can. So many twists and turns you'll begin to fill dizzy. Jeff Ryder is living the high life and has just been made partner at a top law firm when his world starts crumbling around him. He loses the partnership when he is accused of coaching a witness years ago. Determined to clear his name, he opens up his own office. He then starts investigating everything to do with that attempted murder case. A law suit occurs regarding defective armour and a love triangle and lots of surprises. A well written book with strong characters and a captivating storyline. I received an advance copy and voluntarily chose to review this book.
I struggled for the first two thirds of the book. It was painful to read about a self centered, egotistical, superficial attorney who was repeatedly his own worst enemy. Very slow moving book to this point with a second plot which didn't intertwine at all. Finally, like magic, the attorney changes his personality due to his love for a married woman. The pace at the end of the novel does pick up and the two stars are for a decent ending......but it was work on my part to get there.
An amazing murder mystery so expertly crafted that a reader will be transfixed by the unfolding of the story of Jeff Ryder. It felt like being enthralled with an episode of the televised series, "Law and Order." It kept me guessing who the bad guys were and the shocking "great reveal" left me speechless. Outstanding work! Unbelievable! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. Five Stars Plus!
This is one of the best thrillers ever written! Every little nook and cranny is covered brilliantly; the characters are superbly drawn, the plot is exceptional, and every detail is precise. One cannot predict what's coming next, and there are no 'cheats' -- we know what the protagonist knows.
This is the first novel I've read by Ms Hawkins, but it certainly won't be the last. Am going online to find more. What a thrill (er) to find such wonderful artist!
Ok read. Didn’t see part of the end coming but mostly predictable.
Author needs to get a new editor as there were lots of mistakes in this book. For instance the main character, Jeff, was not married. His friend Noah was married to Angie and on one page the author referred to Jeff and Angie as a couple, which they weren’t. Several grammatical errors which really irritate me.
On the other hand, I did like the action in this book
The main character ........hmmmm. You will like him, resent him, pull for him, throw your hands in the air because you can't reach in the book and slap him upside he head....again. You will be torn by how you want the book to end. The ending chapter is not what you will have in mind. And when its finished you will think about it and want to share it with friends. Don't miss this read. Its a good one.
Was somewhat interesting even though the lead character was not at all likable. The build up to the main characters finally getting together was extremely anticlimactic as the whole romantic interlude was SUMMARISED in 2 or 3 sentences and the final chapter was both implausible and fortuitous for the lead character. The writer realised they had to somehow make a happy ending and as such the final chapter was borderline ridiculous

This was for the most part a fun read. The writing is good and things happen fast so you are never bored, but st the end (SPOILER ALERT). strange people come out of nowhere and explain the whole thing as if the readers were third graders. I had already figured most of it out anyway, but the writer took the easy way out st the end. If you read tons of mysteries like me for entertainment and time passing then buy it st a reduced price.
Author Deborah Hawkins' story "Mirror, Mirror" deals with an arrogant corporate attorney who's legal career is almost ended by an accusation of causing a false confssion. What follows is a complicated plot of conspiracy, crooked cops and tangled romances. The plot is okay but the characters are exaggerated and tough to relate to. An unexpected ending ties up all the loose ends. The book is okay but not a prize winner.
I cannot remember drivel such as this in a very long time. It reads like a very cheap romantic/thriller garbage that I might have tried when I was 15 years old. And not even then............it was truly such drivel!! I'm not even sure that it's worth a 'review' except that it's a way to get rid of my frustration at wasting so much my time. No spoilers............the whole thing is a waste of time!!!!! Why degrade myself even further?
An intriguing list of characters - took me a while to get into the story line, but was then soon hooked. Some of the courtroom scenes were a little rushed over compared with, say, a John Grisham novel, but the plot was intricate enough to convince me to read through to the conclusion. Recommended!
This was an outstanding read - I just couldn't put it down. At first I was put off by the constantly shifting character perspectives and times, but quickly overcame that. The book was well written and edited which is unusual for many of the Kindle Unlimited books. Looking forward to more books by Deborah Hawkins.
It took several chapters for me to get really interested in this book but once I did it was a very good book. The characters were well developed and the plot eventually began to move more quickly. There were plot twists that I didn't see coming and I would recommend this book 😊
Excellent book! One of the best mystery/thriller books I have read. I was pleased with the end result and knew Tony was the culprit when Lewis was killed...of course. It seemed rather convenient that the course of the whole story was resolved at the last minute. Alls well that ends well. Will buy more Deborah Hawkins books. Thanx for a good read! Don
Deborah Hawkins is a talented author who needs to focus on the art of the mystery instead of hokey internal voices for her characters. I also agree with another reviewer that the epilogue was an unsatisfying way to end this book. Get back on the horse, Ms. Hawkins, and give us the great mysteries you're capable of!
Loved the story! I kept wondering how a respected lawyer could suddenly be accused of so many murders. Jeff Ryder, the attorney, starts out as quite the money hungry snob but eventually evolves into a much nicer person. Deborah Hawkins, the author, does a marvelous job of keeping me engaged through all the twists and turns of her story. Very well done!
I was given a free copy of this book for an honest review. I loved it!! I didn't see the ending coming, and kept rooting for Jeff to find the answers to clear his name and his professional status. An excellent book that I would recommend. I look forward to reading more books by Deborah in the future.
Unfortunately characters that get themselves into trouble by acting stupidly frustrate me. That describes the main character. However the book redeemed itself somewhat at the end during the pretrial. The evidence presented was complete and mostly believable. So, overall, it was ok.
Suspense, love, patriotism, determination...this book has it all!. Great story that keeps you in suspense until the very end. You will fall in love with Jeff and Beth.
Our hero has some impulsivity issues, and gets a little strident on occasion, with admittedly good cause, but works through a multitude of complications to reach a satisfactory resolution.
The writing is first class. That p!of has so many twists and turns you just aren't prepared for the ending. I recommend this book for anyone that loves a great thriller.
i Gave this A 3 because the witnesses at the end were so unbelievable. There is no way a seasoned Prosecutor and policeman are going to admit , in detail, their crimes to these women. Really ruined the story as it seemed an amateurish way to wrap everything up.
A wonderful book with a great story and characters with substance
A wonderfully written book giving readers a glimpse of life within the justice system. I think it shows the humanity of lawyers, police officers and. the people they deal with.
Every character was believable throughout an exciting and well devised plot. The possibilities for the ending were complex and intriguing. Has everything a good legal thriller should have.
This book is so amazing that I started it last night and never went to bed until I finished it! It was well-written, informative and exciting. It keeps your interest from start to finish. My new favorite!!!
this was one great book ,each page asupprise I didn't get much sleep for thinking, what's on the next page, lots of courtroom drama Jeff kept this book goinging Get this book you won't be sorry.
