Alpha Bet

Rate this book
Nerd Queen, Aliya Grey, has been picked on her entire life for being different. She is done with shifter society. When the chance comes to leave the pack, she jumps for joy. But she didn’t expect that during the exchange of power ceremony, the super-hot and totally lickable, incoming Alpha would tell her he wants her. That doesn’t happen to Ali. Nope. Never.

Marcus and his wolf know Aliya is the one. Giving up his playboy lifestyle attests to how badly he wants her. Ali might be a half-breed, but that doesn’t matter. No way is he letting her leave. A little stalking, a bit of seduction and a whole lot of time together will get her to change her mind. He’s confident.

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as romancing her. Ali’s done with the pack from hell and no matter how sexy Marcus is, she’s out of there. But first she needs to see him naked. He’s so big and strong and that grin…but she’s not staying. It takes an attack on Ali’s life for Marcus to see his pack has big issues he needs to fix or lose Ali for good.

DNF At 2 hours and 33 minutes (Audio Book sped up to x1.25)

I wanted a cute and quick paranormal romance read and I didn't like what I got. The heroine has been bullied in her own pack her whole life and everyone dismissed her (including her family). She's supposed to be a genius but has only been proven to be able to do basic math in her head. Why Nasa would want someone who only does that is strange to me. The hero was naive about the situation in his own pack considering he barely spent any time there in the first place. If he cared so much about his mate why didn't he try and court her earlier when she was getting harassed and bullied and couldn't find anyone to help with the situation she was going through. Their chemistry was nonexistent to me and I didn't know why the heroine liked the hero aside from the bond (that she couldn't 100% feel/tell it was even there). In conclusion, this novel just wasn't for me.

First off, WTF fuck does accounting have to do with going on the moon. Secondly, to go to the moon, physics and mathematics related to physics is necessary. Why then would NASA pursue a person who seems to mostly be skilled in the accounting/business math field. A person who clearly disregards the science/math that she should be pursuing for her field while claiming to be an expert in a perfectly UNRELATED field?! Also, basic math does not make you a genius! This author literally just googled random things to make a character sound smart only to achieve the opposite.

There is so much WRONG with this story, from being the worst cliché to being anti-feminist. I really question whether this author has ever met people -or even held a conversation with them- because the dialogue was painful. I would also like to know why the hell a shifter would post a video of fellow shifters on YouTube when it is strictly forbidden that they expose themselves. Defeatist much? And why is a male being able to do the laundry (his own!) a reason to celebrate on your knees? To be honest the migraine I have after reading this does not allow me to shame this enough.

This was honestly pretty bad and idk why I bothered finishing it lmao. I guess it gets two stars—nope by the time I finished this review/rant I changed my mind and gave it a rare one star bc it was really that questionable—bc I made it to the end? Prob for the pure ridiculousness that I couldn’t look away from?

I was so close to dropping it 10 pages or whatever in bc—first things first—the author didn’t even get the full name for NASA correctly. As in, the thing you can search online just to double check what the acronym stands for, just in case? That, or don’t even use the full name for the supposed NASA director. I even looked it up just to double check that I hadn’t gone crazy—no, the name hasn’t changed, and yes, this one detail bothered the shit out of me because it should’ve been a quick fix. NASA is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, not the National Aeronautical Space Administration. I can’t take it when a basic detail like that wasn’t even caught in proofreading. She gets a call from the “director” who wouldn’t even be able to say what agency he works for correctly, lmfao.

Oh and also when the heroine was like I’m a genius, I’m a Nerd Queen, and then she lists understanding E = mc^2 and—get this—the fucking PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM, a^2 + b^2 = c^2, as reasons she never fit in and was too smart and good at math. I may not remember much from calc (enough to vaguely remember what derivatives and integrals are, pretty much), but I definitely remember the Pythagorean theorem which is… basic math? Geometry? Finding the length of one of the sides of a right triangle??? It sounds like I can do whatever math it is she’s doing lmao.

Anyway, I guess that calibrated my expectations for this book, so I knew up front it was likely going to be bad. And surprise surprise, it lived up to those expectations. I kept waiting for it to get better because of the high ratings on goodreads/amazon; a part of me refused to accept that it was really that bad. But it was. I cringed so many times at all the sexist details included in this book. Like at one point, the dude in this book is like (I’m paraphrasing here bc def not going back to find the quote): this kid one day will be a great mate for a leader. And yes, the kid is a girl. Like why can’t she be a leader on her own? Bc she’s a girl??? What the actual fuck. And the dude’s dad, previous alpha who passed on the title to his son, claims he offered the job to his eldest child, the dude’s older sister, first, but she refused because she wants to keep being a great mother or whatever. Who said she can’t be both??? It’s one thing if his sister had made a formal statement declining and used her own words to say she didn’t want to be alpha, but it’s just super cringeworthy when her dad makes a reference to her wanting to keep being a good mom, even if that is what she wanted. Like it’s fine if that’s what she wanted bc people want different things, and not everyone wants to be a leader, which is cool. But there’s no way to not make that whole bit sound super cringe and sexist and traditional gender role whatever bullshit-ish. Ew.

Another thing I remember from this mess: the heroine in this story at one point is like the guy can do laundry? What can’t he do??? He’s perfect. And I’m like what the fuck?????? Being able to do his own laundry seems like a very basic criterion he should be able to meet living on his own, and I have no idea how this makes him a total dreamboat. He’s a functioning adult—in that one tiny aspect. *eyeroll* and he’s so damn ignorant and sheltered that he’s like omg I can’t let my mate go, I can’t; I need to make her fall in love with me; and then the next second he’s NOT BELIEVING THE HEROINE when she tries yet again to tell him what kind of racist discriminatory bullshit goes on within their pack, even after he’s the one who fucking asked her why she hated shifters! Girl, you’re also dumb af bc he’s yet another person who doesn’t listen to your legitimate lived experiences. Should’ve left town ages ago. And as much as she loves her family, what the fuck? How can her parents be so dismissive of her own concerns about bullying and NOT BELIEVE THEIR CHILD? When her father is the top enforcer or whatever, how the fuck does he turn a blind eye on all this? Yes, the heroine says that kids are smarter than adults think and do stuff behind adults’ backs, but the man doesn’t even listen to his TINY DAUGHTER. And her mom’s attitude is “suck it up, we taught you to defend yourself” (again, paraphrasing, this is not a real quote). She’s like I love my family but they don’t believe the shit I say. And I’m like what the ever living fuck is wrong with everyone in this book??? And yes, there was another review I saw that made the very excellent point that the heroine’s trauma is all brushed under the rug. She was nearly gang raped in college and it’s alluded to in her fear a couple times, until it’s actually discussed by one of the assaulters, and then la di da I guess that’s it; the author just wanted to throw that in there on top of all the bullying and messed up threats on her life that happened. What the fuck—

I love the way Milly writes. She never fails to give us a great story with great characters. I loved reading Marcus and Aliya's story. I think they made a really good team. I felt for Aliya. Getting bullied for being different is a really hard thing to endure. Marcus was a really nice guy and I'm glad that he opened his eyes to some of the prejudices going on in the pack. Unlike the elders.

Aliya is an exceptionally smart woman. None of her pack however care. Especially with her not being a Full blood shifter. She can't wait to get out of town and get her dream job.
Marcus has always been a playboy who was also destined to be the next Alpha to the pack. One chance encounter however made him leave his playboy ways for his mate. However claiming is mate wasn't going to be easy.

I truly adored Aliya and her genius IQ. She was so sweet and kind. Being a half shifter was considered an abomination to some in the pack. So Aliya was always getting picked on my the mean twin brothers and others who wanted her gone! She couldn’t wait to finally leave the pack and go work for NASA. Aliya has always had a thing for the Alphas son Marcus. Her best friends brother who she always thought didn’t like half shifters either. One winters day they accidentally bumped into each other. Marcus being full shifter automatically knew she was his fated mate. She didn’t fulling sense it being half shifter. Anyways, the story is amazing and I highly recommend it. Their story is one I’ll never forget. It stuck with me probably because I always felt different and was picked on who also ended up marrying the popular boy. Maybe that’s why I loved this story. It was their journey & hers on finding her inner wolf and him waiting for her to finally see things the way he does. Her his mate and him hers. It’s a true love PNR. 😊😊❤️❤️

Milly is starting to become one of my favorite authors. Her books are awesome and straight to the point and no cliffhangers. Don’t get me wrong I love long PNR stories but she’s a no BS author who knows what her readers want. Sex and drama and a strong sweet heroine. Love her writing! Even some of the cheesy sex talk. 😂❤️😊🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Marcus is the new Alpha and knows who his mate is but is afraid she will reject him. Ali is a half breed wolf who has been picked on and bullied her entire life and can't wait to get away. Marcus will do anything to convince her to stay but first he has to open his eyes to the problems in his own pack especially the treatment of non full bloods. Dream job at NASA or an Alpha mate she keeps telling herself as he does not want Ali has to choose if she doesn't get killed first.
I absolutely loved this story because I could really relate to Ali and the bullying she was dealing with and the embarassment. Hope Carly will get an HEA too...

Best Milly Taiden shifter book yet !! Ali is only half shifter and has been made miserable most of her life by full blooded shifters, she finally has a way out of town and out of pack life. Only one problem, her new pack leader is her true mate and she doesn't know it . Question is will Marcus love her enough to fix the pack or let her leave ? Lots of hot sex, great fight scenes and a few topsy turvy rollercoaster scenes you don't expect !! Great 5⭐ Read if you love paranormal romance and kindle nd of second chances too !!

This book grabbed my attention from the very beginning.
I loved this book so hard, I didn't want to put it down.
I love how the author has always had "curvy" girls in her books, but this time she has taken things to a bigger level.
This book is about a "nerd" who is in love with the alpha, nothing new there. But this story, to me, is more about bullying.
I think it's great Ms. Taiden wrote about this subject. I liked how Aliya shows you can still be strong after being bullied. You can overcome it, but it does need to be addressed. Loved the whole topic and how it was handled. Because, not everyone sees it.

Marcus was great too.

Love over Hate !!!!!

This was a story of love overcoming hate and bigots. Aliya can't stand living in her pack. She is a halfer and a genius. She has been in love with Marcus since they were children.

Marcus has been brought up with bonkers on the didn't see what was right in front of him. Until he realizes that Aliya is mate.

Together they find that love can over come hate and bigots. Love can lead to out of this world happiness.

Thank you Milly Taiden for giving us a life lesson on love.

Another awesome book by Ms. Taiden. I loved Ali. She was geeky, funny, and sexy. She had been bullied all her life by the pack and has the chance to leave pack behind. Marcus is the new alpha and knows Ali is his mate. He has to convince her to stay. Marcus is the typical alpha, hot as hell, stubborn, and falls on his face for his mate. I loved the story between these two and everything that Marcus does to try to convince Ali to stay. I did not put it down, reading way past my bedtime!

This was not.... it was not good.... the whole accountancy stuff.... was that a sideline to her Nuclear Physics? how the hell did she get offered that job at NASA? Such a weird storyline. I DNFd at about 70% because it got too ridic for me. I have heard amazing things about this author though so i might give another one of hers a go.

Wanted to read something quick , it did the job
I did not like: the h constantly putting herself down, her family and pack not dismissing her when she said she was being bullied, the very unrealistic courting from the alpha guy who happens to be her mate (I did not believe one but in their couple)

AlphaBet as always Milly delivers even touching on something the happens in the real world and near and dear to my hear. Sometimes playing with real situation can be tricky but Milly nailed it.

How does a new Alpha take on a mate that wants nothing to do with the clan? Oh and so justified I think. (Growls) Time for some house cleaning I say and or butt kickin.

You can only put up with crap for so long mostly when you’re young, but a time comes you’re your own responsibility and you’re on the first thing smokin out of the clan you grew to dislike as well as distrust.

Full blood and half-blood has a lot of hurdles to jump through, but no denying that spark. Both will have some rearranging of how they think, to learn to be who each other needs, that love is worth the risk and to learn to trust. I voluntarily reviewed this advanced reader copy enjoy

HOLY MOLEY! This may be my favorite Milly Taiden book ever and that’s saying something. This story moved me on so many levels. Alpha Bet is a book about opposites. The fluffy brainiac and the prep jock. Aliya is super smart and half human. Marcus is her best friends older brother, the new alpha, hot as hades and all wolf. Marcus is totally oblivious to the hell that has been Ali’s life in the pack. She has been picked on for her brains, her shape but mostly because she is a half-breed. When she is offered a job working on the Mars project for NASA she is so headed for Houston. Marcus has to find a way to make her want to stay as his mate. This is a moving story with lots of steamy sex and occasional comedic relief. I highly recommend.

A little thin on content, depth and charcter/relationship development. Marcus is slow on reacting to his mate when he finds her. Even for the reasons he gave I thought it was odd for an alpha male.

Great read

Have re read this book and love it. It’s a quick read but feels like a complete story. The storyline centers around Ali and Marcus, Ali is a math genius picked on her entire life for not being our blooded and Marcus is the new alpha. Marcus tries to convince Ali that despite being picked on, she should be his mate. Very sweet and hot!

I have never bought a book that I already reviewed for author or netgalley but I will probably purchase this when it comes out. Where it was unedited it was a little hard to read but I absolutely loved it. It’s funny, sexy, and sad because of the way the heroine was treated.
Ali is half human and half wolf. She is a genius and substitutes at a high school until she hears from NASA. She was bullied as a child because of her bloodline now she is being terrorized by someone.
Marcus is about to be made the new Alpha of their pack. He knows Ali’s his mate but she is determined to leave. The pack hasn’t been kind to her and Marcus is just now realizing it. Can he convince her to stay or will he lose the only woman he will ever love?

Pulls at your heart strings

A story that tares at your heart, and has you rooting for the girl to tell it like it truly is ,so that no one would go though what she did, while fighting her love for a man that doesn't understand how much words can truly hurt. And a man trying to tell her he is her mate, but in a way that will keep her in his life, while trying to find a way to stop her pain.A very touching story.

I normally enjoy this authors work, it's extremely light reading, lots of love at first sight and sudden uncontrolled lust induced genital clenching going on, and always a happy end to be had by all.
This one however bugged me,

Alpha Bet by Milly Taiden is a shifter novel about Aliya Grey and the Alpha of the pack, Marcus. Ali has been bullied her whole life by the full-bloods, both because she is only half blood and because she is smarter than them. She is so smart that she just got hired by NASA and is ready to get as far away from the pack as she can, all the way to Houston. Once Marcus realized Ali was his mate he has had no interest in anyone else and much more of a responsibility to the pack he is about to lead. The problem is his mate is only half-blood and can't smell the connection he does, and the pack may have some issue with their leader mating with a half-blood.

Alpha Bet really showcases the idea of bullying and prejudice in a way that only a society as primal and brutal as a pack of werewolves can do. Marcus and his family are in denial about what is happening under their noses, partially because no one will tell them in fear of appearing weaker, and also because they just don't live that life and can't imagine it. Because of Ali's experiences she hates full wolves and fears being married to one. Except she is obsessed with Marcus and doesn't know why.

I liked Ali, she really is a strong heroine willing to fight for what she believes in. She has been beaten down but strives to find the best in life. She is atypical of her kind, short and curvy and that frustrates her. Marcus was a strong and likable hero, but as suffers from his worries that Ali will reject him as he has insider information from his half-sister, Ali's best friend, Carly, that she hates wolves and the pack. Marcus really needs Ali more than she needs him, and he knows it. Once the wool that has been over Marcus's eyes about his pack is removed he acts and when he and Ali are together the are fire as a couple.

Overall, I very much recommend Alpha Bet by Milly Taiden as it showcases some very impressive and passionate characters, dealing with real world problems, though in a shifter way, as well as a lot of passion and a cute relationship courtship.

(I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book I received for free in exchange for my open and honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.)

I'm honestly not sure I have the words to describe how much I loved this book. It had so many meaningful components, such as discrimination and hate crimes. Ali is only half shifter. As such, she has been tormented by other members of the pack her entire life. Marcus is full shifter and about to take over the pack as alpha. He's lead a charmed life, of sorts. He had women at his beck and call and generally anything he wanted. Except Ali. The problem is that Marcus doesn't see the hate in the pack toward half shifters. He, like so many other pack members, like Ali's parents and siblings, thinks it's just minor teasing; kid stuff. It's normal for kids to pick on each other and such. It takes witnessing some serious crimes, involving serious destruction of property and hate notes, against Ali to open his eyes. And what he sees he abhors him. This seems so applicable to real life. It is difficult to see someone's struggles without experiencing them yourself. It's easy to brush things off and make light of them. Sometimes we don't want to see the bad, so we put on blinders. I appreciate how Marcus takes it upon himself to address the hate and discrimination in the pack once his eyes are opened. Nobody expects it to happen overnight or for it to be easy, but he's willing to work to make things right in the pack. I also appreciate how Ali never became a victim in her own mind. She took it upon herself to learn how to defend herself and best deal with the attacks, whether they be verbal or physical. That shows great strength in her. Overall, this was a fantastic book. Another great book from Milly Taiden!

Wow this was really poorly written.

I don't usually mind smut for smuts sake but when i read i like to visualize the characters and actions, and this book made it impossible. There was no continuity to actions. In one sentence she's in the kitchen and while in the same conversation she stands up from the sofa. How the hell did she get there? When? I am usually not that picky but this kept happening and made it impossible to get a grasp on many of the scenes. Overall it was just very poor writing.

Content wise the entire book is shaped around a woman tormented by others about her half blood nature and I am supposed to buy that the alpha is 1) oblivious to the situation and 2) thinks the way to convince her to forget her trauma is food and sex over a 1 week period? Also Spoiler*** what a cop out having her shift. The prejudice should get better without that. Its taking a really easy way out for the writer. While I'm as delusional as the next smut reader, I struggled with her HAE came from her giving up what she wants to be with her mate and he's ok with that. Yes she got the best of both worlds but there was nothing the alpha had to give up. Seemed again like a copout from the writer ***

Pros
- HAE
- Obsessed MMC
- Lots of sex (though again the writing made these less than enjoyable)

Con
- Poor writing
- MMC is supposedly oblivious to a common theme in HIS pack. Even his niece who is a child knew and I am supposed to believe he is that dumb?
- 3rd person narrative done badly
- Very obvious twists with very obvious endings.
- FMC is willing to give up her dreams to stay and have babies with her mate

Alpha Bet is the newest stand alone from Ms Taiden & it's a good one. It touches on some timely topics with sensitivity & does a fine job of getting the message through.

Aliya is a very smart woman. She's been offered the job of her dreams & can't wait to start. It helps that it'll take her far away from her very prejudiced pack. Aliya is a half blooded wolf & has been the target of most of her pack all her life. She never expected the man of her dreams, the new alpha, would choose her for his mate. There's no way she's going to stick around that awful place for anything.

Marcus has just been named alpha of his pack. He wants Aliya as his mate & he can't understand why she'd rather leave than accept him. After all, the pack can't be as bad as the half bloods say they are. Aliya & the rest are just overreacting to it all. Or are they? Will Marcus be able to win over Aliya or is he destined to live out his life alone?

This book takes on a possibly touchy topic with style. It gets across that prejudice is everywhere, even if you don't want to see it, without using a sledge hammer. The characters are believable & likable. The heroine is strong & smart. She comes across as accepting her situation & dealing with it without being wimpy or whiny. The supporting characters are well crafted & fit in perfectly. All in all this is a story I look forward to reading again in the future.

Aliya is a half-blooded shifter.
She is also incredibly smart.
Unfortunately, both of these things make her a target for bullying among, her wolf pack.
For years she tried to speak up about what was going on, but no one would believe her.
This caused a lot of hurt, anger, and resentment.
Until finally Ali started to fight back when necessary to defend herself.

Moving to the present, Ali has graduated from college and received her, dream job offer.
NASA.
Wow!
Ali all ready to pack up, her old life to start anew.

Delays to that plan come in the guise of Marcus, the new Alpha and man of Ali's dreams.
Marcus has known for awhile that Ali is his mate, but he hasn't approached her because he knows how much she hates the pack, wants to work for NASA, and he's afraid she'll reject him.

This was a great story. Marcus went through so many lengths to change himself for Ali, getting to know her, and he truly wanted to change the pack for her. But some things can't be changed overnight. Too many people chose to ignore the issues going on within the pack, they ignored people sharing their problems and it just got worse. Sometimes seeing really is believing.

Aliya is a math genius, she is also a half blood wolf shifter, because of those two things she was harassed and made fun of all throughout school. She left the pack for college and now she is forced to come back for the new alpha ceremony. Marcus has been groomed to take over as alpha for when his father stepped down. He has no prejudice against half bloods since his step sister is one, he believes his pack is open minded and excepting and would never treat a half blood badly. He has also known Aliya is his mate for a while now and has hoped she’d return to him. Now is his chance to win her but he only has a week before she leaves the state for her new NASA dream job. Her job isn’t the only roadblock standing in the way, Marcus has his blinders ripped away as the terrible realization of why Aliya hates the pack so much comes to light. Marcus has to step up, not only as a male trying to win his female but also as an alpha to fix the wrongs his pack has done. So good!! I read this in one sitting and then was annoyed with myself that I read it so fast lol. I can’t wait to read whatever comes next!!!
