Where the women at? Cool photos, informative and fun captions, but it's a bummer that a book published in 2017 has so little diversity. Out of 140 photos, only seven were taken by women (and three of them by the same woman). Women were also very rarely the subject of the photographs.
I think they could've been more thoughtful about their selections if they really wanted to inspire /everyone/ and not just white dudes with an abundance of adrenaline.
This book is beautiful. There are so many adjectives it's difficult choosing one - beautiful, amazing, awesome, spectacular... The pictures in this book are absolutely gorgeous. I greatly prefer nature photos over urban scenes or people and this book does not disappoint. My 9-year-old son was in awe of the places and activities shown in the pictures. He's a daredevil wannabe so it's no surprise he spent half an hour after I received the book just flipping through it, adding to his list of things to do and places to go.
Thank you for your generosity in sharing this book. It is filled with truly gorgeous images, some of places I'd never even heard of.
I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I follow a lot of these photographers on Instagram and also remember seeing a lot of these photos in the magazine. It was great to be able to read more background information on how the shots were set up. As someone who is outdoors a lot with a camera, it's quite an interesting read. Even if these aren't your hobbies, there's no denying how amazing these photographs and photographers are.
Wow. That is the only word I can think of to describe the photos in this book. Not only is it beautiful, jaw-dropping scenery but they also capture the climbers, hikers, jumpers, bikers experiencing these landscapes...and the scale! Just. Wow.
I will never visit these extreme and gorgeous locations [armchair travel is safer] so I offer a huge "thank you" for this book and the photographers. The simple paragraphs accompanying the photos offer brief and insightful details of the locations, the athletes, and sometimes statements [understatements] such as, "It was our one-shot wonder" or "I couldn't believe he landed it."
I will risk hyperbole by saying that you will gasp at least a couple times while looking at this book.
EXHILARATING!!! My hand went to sleep clutching my book I was so fraught with tension, admiration and wonder. Stunning photos, insane crazy fearless confident people! Felt so guilty sipping my cocoa and eating a brownie when you see how others tackle life... I would like to blame it on youth, but one person was 65!
A lush photo book about people who engage in extreme sports, or actually more about the places they do it; snow and ice, rivers and oceans, rocks and earth, and air and space. At the age of 70 it doesn't make me want to try it anymore, but the pictures are spectacular.
Gorgeous photos and interesting descriptions of what it took to get them. It was almost too much—the saturation of looking at so many striking photos one after another lessened their individual impact. I think I would have enjoyed it more had I dipped into it just a few photos at a time.
Loved looking at these photos and reading the stories behind them. Lacking in work by and depictions of women, which I would really like to see more of in these extreme sports and settings. Cool to see my home state represented so well, including an acquaintance from ISU!
Jaw-dropping photographs exceeded only by the skills of the sports individuals featured in the photos. If you are an OUTSIDE person, you need to spend some time at The Edge of the World.
Semi-fun skim, but was the editor OOO for the final review? Lots of image quality disparity, and felt like they kinda forgot that female athletes + photographers exist.
I've enjoyed the fantastic photography of Outside for decades, back from when I first got involved with fitness, and these photos, along with the accompanying vignettes, are some of the most awe-inspiring shots you will ever see. More than the acrobats, and I am certainly not one of them, the sheer immensity and subtlety of nature brought tears to my eyes, many times. Just wow!
