Saint Brig

Rate this book
Brig- a young man tossed out of his parent’s home on graduation day. Why? For daring to be himself. Unwilling to conform to their religion, or pretend to be straight, Brig leaves home on a journey that will test his fortitude in ways he never thought possible.
Ending up in Liberty Park, in downtown Salt Lake City, he finds it filled with other homeless kids. His sheltered upbringing forces him to grow up quickly. Another street urchin, Gabriel, takes him under his wing, offering him his only glimpse of happiness during a heady, 24 hour period of time.
Saint Brig is a short story about a young gay man forced to grow up fast- too fast. Will Brig escape his tragic fate, or get lost in the shuffle of other forgotten youth, doomed to a life on the streets?

Ian writes LGBTQ fiction, mainly romance. Growing up, he could never find many books portraying guys like him, so now he's helping to fill the shelves with gay-friendly tales. He tends to write more romance, because he loves nothing more than a happily ever after.

This short story prequel is something I picked up for free. Brig is an eighteen year old Mormon boy whose father has kicked him out of the house immediately after graduation because he found the gay literature Brig had hidden. For me, one of the more interesting details was that his mother (and sisters) castigate him for being a pervert mostly to please his father but hand him over enough money to keep him going (including his little sisters' allowances) for a month or two.

Suddenly homeless, Brig finds himself mixed in with the homeless teens with no clear idea what to do next (and sad to say, in my visit to Salt Lake City last year, there is a huge homeless population there). Gabriel, another young man tossed out for being gay takes him under his wing.

While there isn't much new here, there is a sad realism here when it comes to ultra conservative, outrightly hostile families using religion to hate on people. Brig is nice, a bit too naïve and that will cost him. It's a nice intro into the novel that follows it which I haven't read as of yet.

You live in Salt Lake City. You’re 18, just graduated high school, have read a few books on the subject but are barely ready to accept the fact of your own homosexuality when your father breaks into your bedroom, disowns you, and gives you a few hours to permanently vacate the only home you’ve ever known, then takes your mother and three sisters out to dinner. What do you do?

For a kid who grew up in a protected enclave life on the street is a dangerous proposition for which he has not been prepared. The book ends on a hopeful note suggesting we read volumes two and three.

Street kids probably swear but I didn’t need the profanity. The book needs judicious editing.

A story of a young man and his forced journey into a life he knew was meant to be. He learned early on that he was not attracted to women, but the most he'd ever done about it was to read books and magazines and they were what finally started him on his journey to a new life.

Excellent introduction for Brig! I look forward to reading more about where he goes. Ian is a great guy who I have learned an incredible amount from. Hope to continue supporting him in the years to come!

A short short story of being thrown out of home and Brig having to grow up fast. He meets Gabriel another homeless fellow which takes Brig under his wing. This is the prelude short to "Missionary" for their continued book.
