How I Quit Drinking

Rate this book
This book is a road map. It doesn’t hold the ‘secret short cut’ to sobriety, because there are none, but it does sign-post you through the “getting sober” and guide you towards “living sober” (two very different things).
This book is full of practical guidance for all the phases of the sober journey – what to do when your first pink cloud dissipates, how do you prepare for your first sober outing, why aren’t your friends cheering you on? What’s up with that?
And when do you actually get to BE sober? And is there life beyond this journey – in the scary new non-drinking world?
This book acknowledges that this journey is dual purpose – to ditch the booze and find oneself – and the power and success of recovery comes when you can use sobriety as a tool in your life, rather than a destination.
Everybody has a unique sober journey – but everyone’s path goes in the same direction. This book will help you get there, hopefully without too many detours.

Interesting book but it really needs proofreading

I found this an easy, interesting read. There was nothing groundbreaking or anything like that, but the writing style is nice and conversational. But wow, there are so many errors in it. I can't believe for a second that it was proofread.

Solid advice in quick, digestible bites.

The author started writing sober blogs, and the same style holds true here. The chapters are relatively short, to the point, with some material sourced at the end of each, which may inspire further reading.

While the advice is intended for stopping alcohol abuse - with a special nod to the increasingly prevalent Mommy Wine culture - it rings true for changing a plethora of other bad habits:

"However, just transmitting happy thoughts out to the universe won’t make you sober. “Manifesting sobriety” just doesn’t work–I’ve tried. You just don’t wake up one morning with all your urge to drink just “manifested away” by the Universe. You have to stop drinking and experience all the cravings and nastiness that comes with it. But, if you focus on the positive benefits of sobriety more often than whining and moaning about how deprived you are, it’s more likely that the sobriety will stick."

I'm reviewing this as a stand-alone book, despite it being listed as Book 2 of Sober Ever After. If you already read the first, you'll find a significant portion of that book within, most appearing to be a direct copy and paste. I'm not sure that reading both would be beneficial directly after each other due to this.

Amazing. The most helpful book I've found so far.

Just like Jackie did, I've flirted with sobriety for a very long time. This book is the 3rd book I've looked into for ways to help myself and by far it has been the most helpful. The most relevant. The one that actually resonates with ME and MY story. Her habits were extremely similar to mine, and the way she goes about the whole process is so very simple that it feels like it's possible (but wont be easy). I'm at a week sober so far, and I could not put this book down. I wanted to hear the rest of her story (& immediately downloaded sober ever after when I finished the last chapter in this one) so I made the choice to read all the way through and go BACK through and do the lists and other excersizes she recommends. And, the great thing is, I know I won't get bored doing so. Phenomenal. A must read for anyone struggling with booze. Especially if you're at the point of recognizing something is possibly not right, but aren't sure if your relationship with booze qualifies as an alcoholic (because it probably does). Highly recommended.

more good advice!

Good read! Easy, often funny story share along with plenty of great tips for drinkers wanting sobriety. I’ve read several such books, and I found this one thought provoking in some new ways.

Very helpful

Jackie was really honest and insightful. I found myself relating to her story. She gives useful advice but continues to say it isn’t easy.

Great read

Loved the straight forward writing style. Great advice without being preachy. Didn't just talk about finding a higher power like a lot of books like this.
