If your mind is in a damaged body but could be uploaded to a new one, would you do it?
This is the question the main character, Ryan, answers with a strong yes. Being a paraplegic his whole life, he was ready to take his first steps in his new life. Literally. The procedure seems to go well except for these new dreams he has of another life.
Instantly, the characters are very likable. I enjoy the relationship between Ryan and Helen, even if it seems a bit rushed at times. The dreams with Charlie are exciting and I kept finding myself wondering what was going to happen next when the chapters cut at cliffhangers. I liked that the end of the chapters were the opening of the next. I was left with a few questions at the end of the book, but these may be intentional and answered in the sequel which I plan to read. The science factors of the book were easy to follow and the characters all had strong voices, even with the jumping around. Kudos to the author on this one!

The concept for this book is phenomenal and a bit mind-blowing to think about. It moves back and forth between two characters who have an unlikely link. Lots of twists and turns in this book that keep the reader guessing. I had a few questions remaining when I finished the book that I'm hoping are answered in the sequel. Great read for lovers of sci-fi and thrillers.

This was a great read. Every chapter had me hooked and I enjoyed every second. I didn’t want it to end.
I’m partial to this story type, futuristic science plots that show what could go right…and wrong. The author did great putting together this world and the overlapping timelines. He really did his homework and it made the story that much better.

What an electric finale and so many great moments of suspense! I enjoyed the science of mind migration, future medicine and disease, the psychology of plural characters, and action scenes, military and otherwise. The only downside? Sudden point of view shifts within chapters that caused me to reread passages.

Between Two Minds: Awakening is a mind-swapping thriller that takes place in the relatively near future where differently-abled or otherwise bodily impaired humans can opt-in for a 'mind migration' that transfers their consciousness and 'soul' into a functional host body. Of course, the protagonist Ryan Carter undergoes one of these procedures and nothing goes as planned, as he begins experiencing the memories of the body's old consciousness that leads him down a web of crime and intrigue.
Wright-Hammer does a few things well in this book but it still feels like there are areas that need improvement. His world and concept building are great. The world ten-to-fifteen minutes into the future is well-realized with enough technological differences and analogues to present-day circumstances to make it easy for the reader to slip into along with an intriguing 'past' which features realistic war and disease scenarios. Furthermore, the switching back and forth between Ryan and Charlie (the older consciousness) is structured well and is not as confusing as I thought it would be I especially like the touch of mirroring the last line of every chapter with the first one of the next, which really brings the cohesiveness forward. However, I felt that the book was at least 100 pages too long and could benefit from a good culling. Scenes tend to drag on with characters' internal monologues explaining way too much about themselves and their intricacies to be effective. It causes the narrative to slow to a crawl over things that feel entirely inconsequential, and also really breaks the cardinal rule of showing rather than telling. This is nowhere more apparent than in the characters themselves. Ryan and his love interest Helen are difficult to get a real read on in terms of personality. Other than their disabilities and their shared mind-migration experience, I couldn't really tell you much about who they really are and their dialogue feels bland and stilted at times, which lets the book down a bit. The book also struggled to keep my attention in the middle, where very little happened aside from more exposition, with a very rushed - and all too convenient - conclusion to the overall crime at the end.
The book overall is a solid exploration of an interesting sci-fi concept with a tinge of noir in the background. The biggest knock against it is that it feels a bit overly long and padded to the point where I had a lull big enough to ask myself, "Why couldn't Ryan just get some robotic legs?"

When Ryan, a paraplegic, opts in for a life-altering procedure involving moving his mind to a physically healthy body, his world changes forever. Walking, running, jumping, he can suddenly do tons of things he only ever dreamed of. But something gnaws at him, in the back of his mind, a thought that frightens him... because it might not be his own.
Wright-Hammer has created a magnificent sci-fi universe. Close enough to our own that you'd feel right at home, but with the technological advancement and wonders that you'd expect from a future where nearly anything is possible.
Wright-Hammer's writing style is close to my heart, for the simple reason that it's lavish and detailed when it needs to be, and not when there's no need for it. It gets to the point, pants a vivid picture that drags you in, and throws you right into the action. Perhaps a bit longer and slower paced than what I prefer, taking it's time to build before pulling the rug out from underneath you, but nothing you wouldn't expect from a sci-fi thriller of this caliber.
The story is a bit confusing, maybe particularly in the beginning, but in a good way. The kind of confusion I love, the one where you just want to keep going because you want to figure it out. It's a sense of being just half a step behind what the author is thinking and doing, trying to constantly catch up. But I'll say it again: You want to be strung a long!

I received a copy in exchange for a true and honest review. I really enjoyed this story. The story centers around Ryan, who is disabled. He pursues a mind migration! This idea has always intrigued me; the idea of transferring one's consciousness into another mind/body. This idea alone drew me to the story.
Ryan was such a relatable and powerful character. Dynamic. Realistic. It truly makes you wonder how one in his position would react.
The futuristic world was well written. I felt as though I was there. And, the story maintained its hold on my attention.
The cover is appealing. I believe that D.C. Wright-Hammer did a fantastic job, and I can't wait to read more of his work.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading.

Clever twists

If you're looking for something interesting to read in the science fiction segment, this definitely fits the bill. The story alternates between two primary perspectives; one is a young man who with a birth defect who will undergo a costly procedure to move his mind into a new body, and the other is a military soldier who is introduced to the story during a combat situation. Very soon after having his procedure, Ryan begins having vivid dreams from the perspective of the military soldier, Charlie, and it doesn't take him long to start to become concerned.
My favorite part of this book is in the period during which Ryan is migrating to his new body. The author really captures that aspect so well, and thinks about struggles that a person who has never been able to walk might encounter in the process. I also think that the world he created for this to happen in makes a lot of sense. The circumstances that led up to being able to do the procedure, the failings and the medical eventuality that someone would try again were consistent with our historical behavior and are easily believable.
The only struggle for me was that I wasn't able to connect with or sympathize with either of the main characters. In the beginning I started off having some of that for Ryan, but instead of building I became less interested in him.
My favorite part of this book is in the period during which Ryan is migrating to his new body. I finished this book about a half hour ago and as I type this I’m still high on adrenaline. What a rush! A futuristic technological thriller that kept me guessing until the very last sentence—and the energy is still coursing through my galvanized brain. I ultimately set my Kindle down saying, “No, could it really be?” then, “Whoa!” And I already purchased the next book in the series!
Deep characters with potent, disparate, as well as heartbreaking backstories. A non-linear way of reliving the past events that was clever—especially the manner in which the author leapt from chapter to chapter with a single, transcending thought. This was perplexing, but intriguing.
There’s Ryan, the 22-year-old paraplegic, and Charlie, a troubled marine from the past—and the curious, then very extraordinary relationship that comes with being entangled inside a single mind. A well-crafted chain of events spanning more than 20 years, from gritty past to technologically advanced future. And I loved the myriad futuristic scenes within this novel, as experienced through Charlie’s eyes, and how consciousness, perhaps, could transcend time. One of my absolute favorite parts was a special moment, when an enlightening face-to-face meeting finally took place: within the realm of the mind, a shared consciousness, or soul, perhaps, inside Ryan’s—ahem—their mind! And the descriptive prose throughout this novel was a perfect balance, at times moving a breakneck speeds, at times diving into wonder and awe. All of this and more set my in-awe self right into this subconsciousness “soup.”
And the cleverly masterminded facts about the world as it would, or could be, made the final takeaway pack that much more of a punch. Every detail came together brilliantly to solidify this action-packed mind-warp to the next degree. Riveting was the past as perceived by Ryan, through Charlie’s eyes: exploits of Charlie along with his mobster-like boss, a devious and massive cigar-smoker named The Padre. As well, it was intriguing to dive into Charlie’s difficult upbringing. The events were heartbreaking and deep, with loads of inventive backstories that piled on the character depth.
Quite the imagination, D.C Wright-Hammer. I loved your future—and past—speculations!
The author incorporated stop-on-a-dime bullet trains that wowed Charlie, who was from the past, and especially, there were those the mind migrations… And the in-depth explanations that made the lengthy process, as well as its not-so-successful past, feel sci-fi rock-solid real!
Yet still, there was so much more. More for your typical nerd, even thrill-seeker: daring escapes, suicides and high-speed car chases; and saving memories for posterity, for all to relive or just some; and outcomes of global conflicts, then teeter-tottering from past to present versions, shockingly; and net-phones with brilliant mega-HD holo-displays one could immerse themselves within—and one from the past, who actually does! Take a vacation or walk a virtual dog—but not in the future! New laws prohibit real dogs in the real world… RUFF! Sorry my canine friend, you are now illegal.
One hell of a ride. The story eventually morphed from curious and engaging, to engrossing and engaging, a mystery as Ryan and his hot girlfriend began to collaborate to help someone, some “consciousness,” from times long past. Right after some heart-melting under-the-sheets moments that’ll make you smile—done tastefully, wonderfully. This novel packed quite the emotional punch. Joined by previously very challenged lives—a connection sparked by a goofy come-on in the elevator at the mind-migration building—they were up for the challenge, and they will get to the bottom of things. Together! And so, out on the town they went. They overlaid maps of the past onto maps of the future, comparing differences and digging deeper into trouble. They got chased down while running hand in hand. And thanks to mind migration, they were running without auto-chairs. They possessed two smokin’-hot bods!
So, if you’re looking for a smokin’-hot thriller, a mind-warping bounce from past to present and back in non-linear fashion, a heart-wrenching and heartwarming tale that’ll keep you perplexed—in the best way possible—then, this novel is for you. A paraplegic from birth, Ryan Carter is about to undergo a radical procedure called a mind migration. Not only will Ryan finally have the life he could only dream of before, he will do it in a brand-new body. After the procedure and several weeks rehabilitating, Ryan starts to believe that there is more to the strange dreams he is having. And it feels to him as though someone else is living inside his head. Is it just his memories getting used to living in a new brain or was the migration more than he bargained for?
I enjoyed reading Between Two Minds: Awakening, the debut novel by Author D. C. Wright-Hammer. The story, the first of a series, is unique and well-written. The chapters flip back and forth between Ryan and his “alter ego”, and I liked how the end of a chapter would begin the next. It is interesting and has good imagery, and I found the main character, Ryan, likeable. The story is well-paced, but it is not fast, which I don’t mind. With everything and everybody always in a rush, it’s nice to sit back and relax with a good book.

A gritty story with a strong action core. The science fiction, world-building and medical drama are believable and well-imagined. I enjoyed the story of Ryan, a young paraplegic man who undergoes a medical process that changes his life, turning his world upside down. The action and suspense is well-paced and the explosive ending kept me glued to the very last word. The author gives much thought to his characters and their predicaments. I look forward to reading the second installment of Between Two Minds.
I recommend this book for people who enjoy near-future science fiction action. It will appeal to a wide audience base with its relatable characters, sense of familiarity and exciting plot.

I've given this book a 5.
It isn't my usual genre of book but I have to say that DC Wright-Hammer writes a good story.
My husband read it first, in one sitting.
I found the story of Ryan and Charlie compelling and I couldn't wait to get to the end and the storyline doesn't let you down.
I have ordered book 2 and look forward to.it arriving once the restrictions are over in May

I really enjoyed reading this novel. The main character, Ryan, has been a paraplegic since birth, and. although set in the future, things don't appear to have become much easier for the differently abled. Ryan sets his sights on a mind migration - a pricey procedure to transfer his consciousness and memories into a new body. Interspersed with Ryan's story is Charlie's - a combat veteran whose desperation causes him to make some difficult choices. As the novel progresses, the connection between the two characters is revealed.
The world-building and story in this novel were very well done. Whether taking place in the more clinical present, describing war-time missions, or the seedy underbelly of a corrupt city, it's very easy to fall into the world the author creates.
Since this is the first novel in a series, there are some dangling threads that remain unresolved - this was as I had anticipated. I did find that there was much about the ending of the novel that resolved too smoothly and easily for my tastes - it was a bit of a letdown. One of the twists was just too tidy for my tastes and it really didn't add anything to the novel for me.
The main area that I think could have been improved was in the character development. I found some of the characters' actions didn't make a lot of sense to me. I found that, and this may be largely do to the perspective from which the book was written, the female characters were not very well developed in their own right. There were also a couple of minor characters whose actions seemed bizarre to me - I think some additional context for them would have helped.
Overall, I did really enjoy reading this book and I do plan to continue reading the series.

The world-building and story in this novel were very well done. Whether taking place in the more clinical present, describing war-time missions, or the seedy underbelly of a corrupt city, it's very easy to fall into the world the author creates.
Since this is the first novel in a series, there are some dangling threads that remain unresolved - this was as I had anticipated. I did find that there was much about the ending of the novel that resolved too smoothly and easily for my tastes - it was a bit of a letdown. One of the twists was just too tidy for my tastes and it really didn't add anything to the novel for me.

One Hell of a Ride - A Between Two Minds: Awakening Review
Dang! Between Two Minds: Awakening is one hell of a book. It’s a psychological sci-fi thriller, which is a pretty cool sub-genre to begin with. Add in amazing writing and a fast-paced plot with twists and turns, you have D. C. Wright-Hammer will have you anxiously flipping through pages. I know I certainly was.
The story revolves around Ryan, a paraplegic from born, who has saved up enough money to undergo a mind migration. This is a procedure where the consciousness of a person is taken from one body and put into a healthy body. Unfortunately for Ryan, the body he got is currently occupied. A psychological mind-screw ensues.
I was expecting a sci-fi novel, but I also got an amazing psychological thriller. The story is brilliant, and the writing is superb. It was fast-paced, and I devoured through the book in no time. The characters went in-depth, especially the main two guys. I love the exploration into each character and how each overlapped.
I can’t say enough about how awesome this book is. I already have the sequel downloaded to my Kindle library. Even if you aren’t a fan of sci-fi, if you enjoy a good psychological thriller, I would check out Between Two Minds: Awakening. It is definitely worth your time.

D.C. Wright-Hammer’s Between Two Minds: Awakening explores the possibility of “mind migration” that enables the protagonist to regain the ability to walk. I have first-hand experience with the subject, having a family member who is confined to a wheelchair after an accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. Thus, this novel intrigued me from the very beginning.
My uncle was also offered to participate in a variety of experimental procedures, just as Ryan is, but these came at great cost physically and psychologically. One such procedure involved inserting a device inside his brain that manipulated electrodes; the technology was meant to alleviate pain through the activation of electrodes. Wright-Hammer captures this reality within the realm of science fiction, causing us to question what is real and what is not. Like any surgical procedure, the reader wonders what the side effects for Ryan will be, and this is thoroughly explored in the story.
I enjoyed Awakening immensely, especially the unexpected conclusion. I believe my own connection to the topic of spinal cord injury and medical breakthroughs added an additional appeal for me, but Awakening is a thought-provoking novel that fans of classic science fictions writers will also be amazed by. 5 stars for plausibility and relatable characters.

This book is a slow burner rather than an instant page turner, as at first the constant change of story teller is a little confusing but keep going and you’ll be rewarded with a very clever concept. This sci fi thriller story, set in the future, centres around a paraplegic young man who decides to mind migrate into a “perfect” body, but soon after learning to walk his life takes another dramatic turn and he is plunged into a dark and murky world of gangsters and shady bosses.
The other main character is Charlie a war veteran, husband and father who,
whilst trying to care for his family gets drawn into the same murky world of dodgy dealing and mysterious “products”.
The 2 characters come together in a unconventional way as the story reaches its climax and you’re left wondering about what’s real and what’s a dream. The story very cleverly weaves its way to an explosive ending with some revelations that you won’t see coming and ties up enough loose threads but leaves just enough to hook you back for the next in the series.

Intriguing speculative sci-fi about an all-too-plausible future where the minds of those facing death, disease, or physical challenges are placed into new bodies engineered to be their hosts. There are a lot of fascinating ideas here. The two main characters evoke sympathy as you become invested in their plight, and there is a satisfying villain/dilemma to be conquered. I appreciated the thoughtful examination of the psychological effects such a transfer might have on a person who wakes up in a body so different from the one they've known all their lives. The author also does a great job of adding in futuristic specifics about the setting and society that seem like logical progressions from the technology and culture of today rather than fantastical details designed only to impress upon the reader that the characters are living in The Future. For my tastes, I thought the book could have had even more impact if the plot had been tightened up a bit and streamlined to keep the forward momentum clipping along at a little faster pace, and the writing was a little awkward in spots with a few editing issues. But the overall breadth of imagination, insight into the very human side of technological advances, and the fact that I know this is one I'll keep thinking about long after I've read it makes it a solid four star read for me and well worth reading.

This book was pretty good for me. I would say while the story was fairly interesting for me,
the layout in how the author structured it made me want to keep reading. One chapter flowed
nicely into the next. Literally! Aside from the few errors I did come across, (Not spelling, but rather omitted words that the mind easily places there unless you're paying attention!) I don't really have anything negative to say about this book. If you're looking to a semi-future setting with a story where you just are trying to discover the bottom of a mystery, this is your book. If you think you have it figured out, you may be in for a surprise! I enjoyed it enough, given the chance, I'd look into the sequel as well.

The interleaved narrative worked well in establishing the characters' voices and drawing me in to the mystery. The characters have a rich backstory that (without giving anything away) ties the narratives together in a satisfying way. The world-building was extensive and for the most part incorporated into the narrative without a lot of info-dumping. The plot was fast-paced and did not lose focus, which kept the tension high as the mystery unfolded. The science of mind-migration was intriguing, internally consistent and explained well without slowing down the plot. Ryan's experience gave opportunities for showing rather than telling. The story kept me engaged in the moment. All in all, it was a very good read, and I would recommend it to any fan of sci-fi crime and mystery - especially fans of neuroscience and psychological elements in sci-fi. The main character's quest for a new body as a way to overcome paraplegia raises complex issues about health care, accessibility and disability.

I was drawn to the concept of this book: mind migration. So many possibilities for great things, and so many chances for things to go wrong. I wanted to explore this world with the characters. In addition to the concept, I very much like the way Wright-Hammer wrote this story and really feel its structure reflects the way the characters are feeling and experiencing their world. Whenever the characters felt disjointed or off-balance, I was right there with them. When I thought I had things figured out, I was proven wrong. This one will keep you guessing to the end.

I received a free copy of this book from the author through Voracious Readers Only and I'm glad I requested it! It was a very interesting story that didn't really have any slow spots. It took you from one point to another without slowing down. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a lengthy, in-depth, sci fi read!

The premise of this book initially seemed to me like a futuristic version of the movie Self/Less. Despite a few similarities, DC Wright-Hammer’s work proves much more layered and complex, interweaving the genres of science fiction, psychological thriller, suspense, dystopian, and even some elements of crime fiction in a plot that is utterly unpredictable, with twists and turns in every chapter.
Both Ryan and Charlie are likeable, well-developed, distinct characters. One of my favorite insights into Ryan was the fact that dog-walking was his favorite virtual reality scenario. The Padre was also very well-drawn. I could envision him rocking his way out of a Cadillac.
I really enjoyed the small details depicting the future world in which the story takes place, including the Fallen Tower of Pisa, solar panel roads, bullet buses, etc. The concept of Mind Migration (including preliminary training, the procedure, recovery process, side effects, and risks) was thoroughly imagined.
The political state of the futuristic world is a little confusing. Why all the bizarre laws? It is obvious that there is some kind of societal corruption (oppression?) in place, but it isn’t something the characters take on in this first book of the series. Also, Spotted Lung disease had some suspiciously strange symptoms suggestive of conspiracy. Yet it remains unclear whether the ailment was engineered for political/economic upheaval and if the black market for human organs was an influence or a consequence.
Though Ryan and Charlie’s story is resolved in Awakening, there are plenty of loose ends for the Between Two Minds sequel. Most intriguing to me is Helen’s blackout. Is she in the same mind-sharing predicament as Ryan? Also, Tony’s findings regarding “duplicate” hosts and other Mind Migration anomalies were undivulged. I thought it a telling clue that ADG therapy sessions are “recorded for quality assurance.” I wonder what all those recordings might reveal.

I really enjoyed this book and it’s very interesting concept of mind migration. The pace of the book was good for me as well and I liked the Ryan- the main character. I am looking forward to reading book two!

But Ryan experiences strange side effects – or are they? Or is there really another mind inhabiting his new body?
As Ryan searches for answers, he finds more questions: what is the connection between this other consciousness and himself? The line between his life and his co-consciousness blurs: who is real? What is real? Whose memories can be trusted?

Without spoilers, my advice is to read carefully, because apparently insignificant things will prove to be important as the story moves towards its climax.
I’m giving the book four stars, not five, from the cumulative effect of a number of small things that jarred: dialogue that didn’t ring true, some awkward transitions, a few continuity questions. There are a lot of small details, perhaps too many for some readers, but a writer cannot hide items of significance in a narrative if they stand out as obvious! The overall story kept me interested and trying to guess where it was going (I didn’t) and that tells me the author has done his job. It would make a compelling movie!

Between Two Minds: Awakening is a psychological thriller by author D C Wright-Hammer. The concept behind the novel is one that makes it hard to deliver a spoiler free review, but an attempt will be made.
First, it must be acknowledged how creative, and just damn good, the concepts and writing are for the novel. The world building that Wright-Hammer engages is some of the smoothest I have read in awhile. It is neither overwhelming or lacking. The reader is pulled in to the world and becomes so engaged that learned aspects seem as though they were facts that were already known.
The main character, Ryan Carter, is earnest and likable. Following his journey quickly becomes an emotion filled adventure that keeps one on the edge of one’s seat. Along the way their are second-primary and secondary characters that jump in and out of the focus of the tale, but Wright-Hammer manages to integrate just enough carrot to keep them interesting as well.
The plot of this novel is simply fantastic. There were several points where I was sure I knew what the next step would be, and I was horribly-wonderfully wrong. The twists and turns that happen toward the conclusion were surprising, jarring, and beautifully rendered to set the reader up for Book 2 – Revelation.
The only part of the novel that gave pause was the narration style*. Wright-Hammer used a story navigation that alternated each chapter between the voices of primary and second-primary characters. It’s not my favorite narration style, as i feel it forces a kind of mental hiccup between reading and world immersion. However, after a few chapters, it becomes apparent that Wright-Hammer is extremely proficient at the use of this tactic and it works well for the overall story cadence.
I marked Between Two Minds: Awakening with 5 stars based on the novels creative and original premise, the action packed – though moderated pacing of the novel, the person-ability of the characters, and the fact that I felt bereft when the novel was over knowing I would have to wait to read the next installment.
