Kirkus Reviews called it: "A compassionate and stylish tale..."
The Storm struck five years ago as a monstrous waterfall pounding the world. Entire cities vanished underwater, lakes grew and merged into oceans. Glaciers shrank and mountains melted. People changed…
Grays, vicious creatures that were once human, know only hunger. They hunt Scout and her group of friends mercilessly. Even more terrifying is that Scout and everyone else still alive knows that their own transformation is inevitable.
When Scout’s change begins, she realizes that hers is different, and that the burden of humanity’s survival is now on her shoulders. To save herself and everyone she loves, she must find a cure. If she dies, our world dies with her.
David Kettlehake’s fascination with reading began at a very young age. Even though his father was a minister and his mother was a social worker and money was tight, his parents never said no to books. He still vividly remembers reading under the covers at night with a flashlight, while listening for the footfalls of his parents telling him (for the last time!) to go to sleep.
The first book he ever checked out of a library was Robert A. Heinlein’s Rocket Ship Galileo, back in elementary school. But as often as not, he could be found reading an Alistair MacClean thriller, or horror short stories from H.P. Lovecraft. Science fiction and fantasy novels came later, and even now the books he picks up are from genres all across the board.
For the most part, his protagonists are average people caught up in events outside their control, forcing them to overcome their own fears and shortcomings in order to succeed…or survive.
He deeply believes that reading should be fun and pleasurable, and that when you finish one of his books you breathe a deep, satisfied sigh, and wish there were just a few more pages.
David and his wonderful wife Lisa have three terrific kids, Nikki, Aaron, and Ian. He and his wife live in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. They love traveling here and abroad and seeing the world, which is why his stories tend to gravitate outside of the U.S.
His third novel, the YA dystopian thriller GRAY, will be released in September of 2020 through Brother Mockingbird Publishing.

What an awesome book! The story is a refreshing take on post-apocalyptic scenario and a zombie-like danger. It’s a realistic story, too, in having plenty of human, “regular” activity and not action all the time. Don’t misunderstand, though - the quiet and regular times included compelling character development that only add to the detailed action sequences. Love the cast of characters - strong feelings for the good and the unlikeable. Can’t wait for the second installment!
In this gripping read, Kettlehake creates a dystopian future where young people live in a flooded world fighting for survival against the savage mutants they are destined to become. As Scout and her forged family endure hardship and loss in their daily struggle to stay alive, she discovers a reason for hope. Billed as a young adult novel, readers of all ages will find themselves rooting for the Firebrand's success and anxious to begin book two (Black) of this trilogy.
A fun, fast-paced story about a group of likable kids and how they handle the apocolypse. It had me thinking after I finished the book. I can't wait to read the next in the series. This is a definite read for anyone that loves a good adventure/thriller.
Such a great read. I really enjoyed the apocalyptic world the author created. I’m looking forward to reading more about Scout and her friends. Highly recommended!
Amazing work...and a grand addition to the array of books that ignite the imagination of young adults. Scout and Singer will be talked about in the future. The story: a Storm has covered the world, rain, sludge, despair. Few survivors and some with a vicious disease that turns them Gray and deadly. To survive means to always be on the run. Scavengers, wise and desperate, Scout and Singer make this journey a fast paced thriller. The will to save their group is beyond the ordinary. Young adults or not so young will enjoy the fresh excitement David Kettlehake has created.
