A wolf on the run

Cyrus Del Basque has been running his whole life. Born to a pack of fugitive werewolves, he travels the country with his family, trying to stay one step ahead of the hunters who pursue them. With only each other to rely on, his family roams from town to town, never stopping long enough for Cyrus to make friends, let alone have a relationship.

But living under constant threat has taken its toll, and when Cyrus’s grandfather falls ill, his desperate family takes refuge in the most unlikely of places—a drive-in movie theater outside of tiny Modesty Creek, Montana.

A man looking forward

Nathan Anderson is comfortable in his world. Proud owner of the Throwback Theater, Nate’s life revolves around movies, books, and World of Warcraft raids with his long-distance best friend. He’s spent the last few years healing from a car accident that left him in a wheelchair, and though he has lingering mental and physical scars, Nate is happy and content in the life he has built.

But Modesty Creek is small, and the dating options slim. So when the strange family blows into town, Nate is immediately drawn to the quiet, intense oldest son. And when sparks fly, Nate—ever the romantic—can’t help but start imagining the future they might have together.

Two world colliding

But Cyrus knows he can’t risk putting Nate and his family in danger. How could he even begin to explain? He knows that, at best, they can only have a few days together. But even as Nate and Cyrus are drawn closer together, Cyrus knows that at any moment, hunters could arrive to tear them all apart… and burn down the world that Nate has created.

Woah, this book floored me.

Once I really got going with the story, I absolutely could NOT put it down. It made my pulse race and caused my emotions to just squeeze my heart in that perfect way- I HAD to light up that 5th star.

I'm going to start by saying that the editing in this book isn't the best. It isn't criminally bad, but it was actually a bit distracting for me, which is a CRYING shame because the book is bananas awesome. I read the paperback version, and the editing mistakes felt even more glaring. If you can get past those details, though, the book will blow your socks off.

I honestly didn't remember even one detail of what the story was about before I started it. I purchased the book directly from the author when I met her at a con, but I vaguely remembered it was a shifter book when I picked it up and that's about it.

It turns out, I made a really good choice.

Lupine Road was truly a perfect book for me. I really, really like atypical MCs, and a MC that is a paraplegic is right up my alley. I love reading about characters that aren't the tropey, perfect, fake-feeling mock-ups of real people.

The two MCs were both amazing, actually, but I really loved Nate. A dorky, sexually inexperienced guy in a wheelchair who puts himself out there and is brave and smart and quirky... gah! I fell for him hard, and I could read 100 books with him in it. I loved his chemistry with Cyrus (so strong!!), and the realistic details of his impairments. I liked how I learned a few new things about intimacy with a paraplegic (or at least, it felt realistic to me, an uneducated reader about these matters), and I learned how Nate's body worked and all that came with it: sexy, different, and fantastic.

The beginning of the story is all relationship and trust development. The plot is slower-paced to start, which I liked, and I adored getting to know the two MCs and all the secondary characters. But that ending... WOAH. Your heart will pound and you will NOT be able to stop reading until the end.

I hope this book and Cal Matthews get lots of attention because I was really impressed. Any book that makes me feel that rare rush of intense emotion is special to me, and this book was no different.

Wow, I kinda loved this story.

I fully expected to read this story and it be all teeth and claws and snarling and fur. And it kinda was. But it mostly... wasn't.

The story actually reminded me less of a paranormal suspense and more of a fleeing fugitive plot line, as there was a minimum of shifting and talking about being wolves, but a premium of pages devoted to family, staying safe, and staying together.

And then, yeah, fuck that. All hell broke loose and bring on the teeth and claws and snarling and fur full force.

And. It. Was. AWESOME.

The scene where the "big bads" finally caught up with the family was so frickin' good. It wasn't rushed, didn't feel abbreviated, and left none of the emotion-evoking details passed over.

It was suspenseful and had me on the edge of my goddamn seat FOR-EV-AH, as the same events were told twice; once from Cyrus' wolfy, would-be savior point of view and again from Nate's handicapable, wheelchair-bound human captive point of view.

But that long action scene was only the pyrotechnics of this story, the *WOW* moment. The bread and butter of the book was the tentative, developing relationship between a vagabond boy who'd never had a home and a boy who was happy, in spite of his circumstances, but also very lonely. And it was beautifully done.

Also very well done was Nate's humor. His enthusiasm had me laughing really hard when the sexy times ensued. I wouldn't really characterize this book as a sexy read, but more of a touching story, with lots of Nate's insecurities to work through and Cyrus' constant thoughtfulness.

The story was definitely not perfect, though. It could've seriously used another round of editing for missing words and such, and the book ends with remaining possibility for danger, but I'd still rate this one at around 4.5 stars and whole-heartedly recommend it.

One of the most unique and original paranormal suspense/shifter tales I have ever read.

This story is atmospheric. It transitions deftly between impressions of fear, darkness, anger, violence, and surprisingly, a sense of sweetness and innocence. Some of the descriptions are so vivid that I can see the story playing out like a movie in front of me. Author Cal Matthews describes how images of the story first came to mind: “Lupine Road was dry silt, brackish water, the smell of popcorn and the gleam of headlights.”

What truly stands out for me is the portrayal of the two main characters. Cyrus, (age 24) is a werewolf grappling with the need to keep his family safe, and the desire to stop running from hunters. Cyrus is not a typical Alpha shifter. He is vulnerable, anxious, and uses cutting and self-injury as a way to ease the pain of his anxiety and depression.

Nathan (also 24) is much more upbeat and optimistic. He is a self-described geeky gamer who loves running a drive-in movie theater. His humor and self-deprecation are bright and shining elements in the story. After a car accident, which caused partial paralysis of Nathan’s lower extremities, he has spent the last few years in a wheelchair. It is so refreshing to see inclusion and a realistic portrayal of a character with a disability. Nathan is matter of fact about his use of a urinary catheter. Sexually, he is vulnerable, and feels shame because of the diminished muscle mass in his legs and his reduced sensation that affects his ability to orgasm. Thank you to the author for writing about Nathan; I hope to see more authors writing realistic portrayals of characters with disabilities.

For both young men, this story is a painful journey of growth, maturity, and self-awareness. It feels like the start of a series, and I would love to see continued development of these men (and the interesting side characters).

Highly recommend!

I did not like this. It made me feel sad and angry.

My main issue with this book was that it had this overall sense of sadness throughout. I guess you could say everything was tinged with realism (as far as that can go in a book about werewolves). Even the end was not hearts and flowers and never would be. I know most readers actually like that, just not me.

What gave me a bad feeling from the start was Cyrus’ family and the way they were with each other. There was so much anger and resentment, that I wanted to just run away from them all. I could absolutely not understand the choice the grandfather made and the way Cyrus’ mother agreed with that choice. It all made me feel so sad. And more so because they weren’t even the ‘bad guys’ of the story. They were Cyrus’ family and he loved them. That made my head hurt even more.

And then the romance. There were some parts I really liked about the romance. When Cyrus and Nate got to know each other and became involved my heart was happy. I loved how Cyrus treated Nate, and his injury. There were some very sweet moments between the two.

But while I was hoping for some really amazing hearts and flowers and a true OMG I LOVE YOU declaration, that never came. Well, not from Cyrus’ side. Even near the end all Cyrus could say to Nate’s love declaration was, I don’t feel that way yet… OMG, talk about a buzzkill.

The same with their future together. Cyrus can’t really stay because of the danger, but he kind of does anyway. It ends with a sort of, Oh wow, I guess I stayed here longer than I thought, I should stay some more. That was so very unromantic.

When the bad guys in a book show up I’m never really worried. I want the big bad wolf to rescue his mate and do all the comforting for his hurts. But here I was actually worried. It seemed like in this entire book everything that could go wrong, did go wrong, so I wouldn’t have been surprised if the bad guys simply killed Nate.

Overall this book was too depressing for me with the HFN being way too tentative.

Superb Shifter Story!!!

Was this book unique or what? I loved this werewolf shifter book! The characters in here were imperfect, in other worlds, real. I liked them, loved them, hated some of them, wanted to slap sense into others. You see, they were all doing the right things and all the wrong things, too.

Okay, so fantastic, realistic, flawed characters. Check.

Our MCs? One hot, big, tattooed werewolf named Cyrius. One nerdy, gaming, human in a wheelchair named Nate. Guess who had the most flaws? If you guessed hot as hell werewolf, you win.

We have a pack running from hunters. They’ve been on the run for 15 years or so. Never stopping for more than a day or two. Fortune, for better or worse, brings them to an RV Park on Lupine Road owned and run by Nate and his family.

Nate and Cyrius eye each other and like what they see. The pack stays for a few days. Awesome things happen between Nate and Cyrius. Things like talking, and eating, playing WoW, kissing, and giving me the feelz because these two are amazing together!

Anyhoo, things come to a head. Right? We gotta have a climax here and does it ever blow up on everyone’s faces. But then, remember that at the end of this resolution after our climax there’s a nice HEA we roll into.

HEA, HFN aside, the author left some opening for a future book. Maybe we will see one, or maybe we will just have to imagine our own way to tie up those loose ends.

This was a great read that was more about family bonds than about Shifters. And as we all know, bonds get strained in real life.

I don’t even know what I’m writing anymore. Read this book. It’s fantastic. I read it in one go with a few breaks for chocolate 😉!

Simply brilliant paranormal world building

That was a superb book. It's not easy writing something fresh in the world of the paranormal but this one from Cal Matthews felt new.

It's not that there was anything out of the ordinary about the paranormal aspect, although I did like the emphasis on the secretive and haunted nature of a pack which was always on the move, always fearful.

But the narrative just felt different, less about the actual werewolves and more about the pack dynamics and the human frailties.

Although the big threat element was a little out of left field in how it was all rounded up, I'm expecting and hoping there will be more in this series which takes that story element further.

I was also extremely impressed - as a wheelchair user myself - with how Nate's paraplegic state was written. It rang true and there was no magic cure all when he fell for Cyrus, it was still complicated and out of the norm for them to be sexually active. The scenes were written with incredible care and were informative in a gentle, non preachy way.

Can't wait for more!

3.5 stars

Content warning:

I’ve never wished so much for the possibility of giving half-star ratings; this isn’t a 3.5 stars leaning on 3 or a 3.5 stars leaning on 4, it’s a solid 3.5 stars but GR doesn’t allow for that and I’ve been stuck pondering how to solve this very dreadful, very real, very first-world problem.
After careful consideration, I decided against tossing a coin (for now), and instead I’m going to try a much more scientific (*snorts*) approach, because everyone knows science has everything to do with writing a review. Whatever, I’m stuck and I have to do something so that I can move on to the next book.

Reasons for a 4-stars rating:

- Despite most of the story taking place over the course of a few days, or maybe because of that, I really liked how things progressed slowly, in every way. Cyrus and Nate took their time getting to know each other, they were obviously attracted to each other but didn’t rush to put a label on it, and the details about Cyrus and his family’s situation were revealed piece by piece as the story progressed.

- Cyrus surprised me, I expected him to fit a certain mold as a character and got an almost completely different one. I expected the super-confident alpha and got a much more insecure wolf with strong ties to his family/pack, well on his way to developing a strong sense of independence; he was the right amount of sad, uncertain and conflicted without becoming depressing or annoying to read about, just a young man trying to figure out his life, and I loved how he stood up for himself without losing his kindness.
I liked Nate as well and, given how much he’s into video-games and therefore how much of what he said went right over my head, that was another good surprise. The combination of caution and determination really worked for Nate’s character and I liked how he wasn’t shy about setting Cyrus straight when he needed to.
I also loved how Nate and Cyrus interacted with each other, the communication between them was something rarely seen in romances. If you don’t count the little I’m-a-werewolf detail, I mean. But I guess we can cut Cyrus some slack on that, it’s not really an easy thing to work into conversation.

- The writing.

Reasons for a 3-stars rating:

- I already said I liked how Nate and Cyrus took things slow and in that respect was completely realistic and understandable. The other face of that medal was that seeing felt anticlimactic and put a damper on the romance angle. Although the epilogue made up for it, at the time it really seemed like

- Some things didn’t make much sense.
Take Weber’s character, .

Another thing that didn’t add up was

There were also some loose ends left dangling around, .

- The editing. I noticed a lot of missing words or other editing issues and I probably missed a lot more than the ones I caught.

So the final result is…
3-stars rating: 3.
4-stars rating: 3.

So much for the scientific approach.
Back to basics, then.
Rounding it up because I enjoyed reading it and I liked the characters. Also, I’ve given 3 stars to the first book I’ve read by this author and I still remember how that one drove me to a rant-review.

I waited too long to write/post this review and now I can’t finish it. I’m just going to post my two attempts at the review and leave it at that. Life is so hard sometimes, lol.

1st attempt:

Well, ok. The ratings for this are all over the place.

Kind of like my feelings.

There is a lot I liked/loved about this story but only some of the time.

First and foremost, to me, this story may have been better had it not been a shifter story. I didn’t get that aspect of the story. I constantly felt confused any time we were in the presence of the Pack. I just don’t feel like I ever completely understood the life they were living, even before the running.

So, I didn’t like that part of the story and it is a pretty big part of the story.

But…it kind of isn’t either.

Really the book was about two boys who found something that they have never had and holding on to that tight.

2nd attempt:

I have no idea how to write this review. I started on another page and just had to switch to a new page and try to start over.

Ok.

For everything this book was it also wasn’t. I’d like to say this was a beautiful story of two boys finding each other, falling in love, finally finding a home and living happily ever after, but it wasn’t that. Maybe it was from one side but as a whole, it just was not that.

This was a shifter book but it wasn’t. I mean, I just don’t get it. I don’t even get their life before they were on the run. But their life on the run? I really don’t get it. I also didn’t like their Pack very much. I didn’t feel the love. It all felt too angry and not what I am used to or expect from a close Pack.

This was kind of dark. Dark may be too strong of a word but there was just something about this book that hurt. There was a lot of subject matter that maybe should have a little bit of warning. .

The best part of this book was Nate. He was like sunshine.

So, jumbled thoughts and no definitive conclusion to the review. I mostly liked the book but I kind of didn't. I don't know, like I said, I waited too long to get back to my failed attempts at a review.

3.5 Stars

I picked up Lupine Road to hopefully satisfy my craving for a shifter tale, but sitting here now thinking about what I really liked about this story…the big shifter ingredients don’t even make the list. Don’t get me wrong, it has plenty to love. But for me anyway, it wasn’t the wolf pack parts. Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way. *rubs hands together* Let’s get to the good stuff….

This book had one of the cutest meet-cutes I’ve seen in a long time. Picture this…The pitch black night broken up by a bright, friendly, flickering movie screen in the background while two young men slowly make their way to each other. As soon as Nate called out for Cyrus to come out of the shadows, I was locked into that scene. The way Cyrus stalked over to him, sat down, and started to relax and talk and check each other out--from eyes to tattoos to everything!--took my breath away. I loved it! Cyrus could hear Nate’s heart rate pumping away with excitement and nerves and smell his sweet smell. The heartbeats and smells added such a sweet, slightly dangerous, sexy feel to the moment for me. A moment that became my favorite part of the book. Nate’s light-hearted geekiness and Cyrus’ dark mysteriousness sparked off of each other perfectly. Flirting and looking and almost touching! The air was electric! But let me back up a bit.

Nate Anderson and his family own and run a campground with a diner and drive-thru movie theater attached. Nate is a paraplegic, who has spent the last few years in a wheelchair due to a car accident. A place to move around with ease and feel comfortable in is important. The land and movie theater is everything to him. He’s carved out a happy place in the small town of Modesty Creek, Montana. But he’s lonely. Until…Cyrus and his pack hit town looking for a place to rest from their nonstop running road days. Cyrus and Nate are drawn to each other almost immediately. I loved their chemistry and dynamic. One man so dug in and anchored to his home and life of movies and work and the other always on the run with no place to call home. Cyrus and Nate fit. In many ways, they found the things they long for in life in each other. But Cyrus is full of dangerous secrets. Secrets that could get Nate hurt.

I loved the slow getting to know each other first half of this book very much. Both Cyrus and Nate felt so vulnerable and inexperienced to me. And sweet! Nate especially made me laugh and smile. His obvious love for all things movies and gaming came out in the most hysterical ways! And Cal Matthews did a wonderful job of capturing and describing Nate’s disability—from daily worries to sex. But my favorite part of the writing was the way nature played such a big part of the story. I could feel Cyrus’ need to run and breathe in the fresh air and forest. The cottonwood trees, crickets, and creeks were all in there to bring the land alive with sounds and smells.

All of this and more added up to a captivating read for most of the book. The ending just felt like a drastic turn for me. All of a sudden the story switched gears and lumped all of the action and wolfing at the end. The wolf parts and romance parts needed to be stirred up a bit more for me I think. I also didn’t fully understand or feel some of the parts—like the anger between the cousins or what exactly was going on with their grandfather. Everything came together eventually, but I wish I got more of a hold of it all a little sooner. Not sure that made sense, but it’s the only way I can describe it. Still loved meeting and spending time with Cyrus and Nate. Their time on the page together held this can’t-look-away-from energy. Here’s hoping they found a home in each other.

Recommended.

The cover of this book is a beauty. Of course that's what caught my eye. But the inside was great too.

The first half of the story was about the MC's getting to know each other. The whole story didn't last longer than a week. Cyrus and Nate started falling in love with each other in the span of 3 days maybe, but I wouldn't call it instalove either. It was deeper than that. Oh, and they weren't mates either. I really loved how Cy wanted to help Nate (cause he was bound to a wheelchair), but didn't want to overwhelm him. And despite Nate's limitations, he was fierce, and headstrong, and he knew what he wanted.

It was interesting to see the family dynamics on both sides. I mean, who has a stepfather, who wants to play World of Warcraft with his 24 year old stepson?! That was so cool. :D And Cy's family (pack), was so fragile, due to circumstances. They were all pulling apart, and all of them wanted different things they couldn't have.

Nate and Cy were already in too deep, when the shit hit the fan. The action was incredibly detailed. And I loved that too. Weber (the bad guy) was a bit too crazy for me, and I have a nagging suspicion about him, about who he is. I hope we'll find out.

I admit that I had a hard time with this story, I stopped several times, but it was probably my fault, cause I'm still hung up on a great book, I've read recently. And I'm glad I didn't give up, cause it was really good. There were some typos, but it didn't really bother me. And I hope this story continues maybe with Emily and Lacy? (that would be my first girl on girl love story) or Emily and Roman? I'm unsure of that, I could imagine both possibilities. :)

I loved this, and I’d probably round up my rating if it weren’t for one ‘little’ thing: typos. There were SO MANY freaking typos here! 😵 Like autocorrect went crazy when she’d been writing this, and no one noticed. Sloppy! I hope you changed your editor, Ms Matthews.

That said, this book was very, very good. Typos aside, the writing was fantastic, beautifully descriptive, with two distinctive MC voices. The main characters themselves were wonderfully fleshed-out for such a short book, and I think Matthews deserves about one million sensitivity points for writing Nate’s character so well. 👏 She didn’t sugar-coat his disability, but also didn’t squeeze it for all its angst potential. It added a lot to the hurt/comfort aspect of this book, yes, but in a good way. And he was such an adorable little nerd, I loved him. 😍 Cyrus was a sweetheart, not only with Nate, but with his own family, which were kind of shitty. Well, at least some of them.

The romance was a bit insta, but not? Insta in the way that it happened over a relatively short time, but ‘not’ when it came to their feelings?? Ugh, ignore me and my obviously exhausted brain. 🤦🏻‍♀️ You just have to know two things: one, they’re NOT fated mates, which is super rare in shifter books! and two, it doesn’t FEEL like insta romance, and that’s what important, right? 🙈

Now, for the niggles. The typos, obviously. The way some things were left unexplained and unresolved:

I think this book could’ve been 500 pages long, easily, with all the themes it explored. In fact, it should’ve been at least 100 pages longer, to explore them more thoroughly. Can’t have it all, I guess. But I do recommend it, especially to the readers who enjoy hurt/comfort, shifters, and found family tropes in their romance books. 👍👍👍

Wow, wow, wow! I seriously LOVED this book. It's definitely not perfect, as there are some editing issues (seriously, so many things that could've been easily fixed), and there were a couple of things that bugged me, which I will put under spoilers below. Neither affected the plot, just minor things that annoyed me that I wish I could change.

I honestly loved this story and these characters so much. I appreciated the time and care the author took in developing Cy and Nate's relationship, and there are some truly beautiful intimate scenes with these two that I just loved. And Nate is so sweet, funny, geeky, and ugh he's just a precious little bean. Trust me, you will love these two together. I really hope there is a sequel in the works!

I highly, highly recommend this. I was going to go with 4 stars, but I'm bumping it to 5 . Even with the editing (ugh, so frustrating, WHY?!), I can already see myself rereading soon and adding this to my favorites shelf.

Shifter MC and Handicapped MC....yay!!!
Very sweet couple....character development was there. Secondary characters, even, had a great part in this story.
So....Cyrus...(shapeshifter) is on the run with his family. Physically intimidating, loyal to his family (to a fault), and kinda into this drive-in theater owner, Nate, who is in a wheelchair.
Nate...physically UN-intimidating, loyal to his family....and knows MORE of what he WANTS than the big, tough shapeshifter, Cyrus.

So, they blend nicely. Truly a great story of being in puppy love. I wouldn't call it TRUE love...

Why not 5 stars?????
Nate appears to be of stronger character than Cyrus. And although that's an interesting twist...I DON'T like the fact Nate always appears to be BEGGING Cyrus to.....1. stay with him, 2. love him.
Begging? Convincing? NOOOOOOOOOOO! you don't have to BEG someone to love you!!!!

And even though the author did a wonderful job of describing Nate as handi-CAPABLE....physically,..... emotionally he had quite a catch up to do. Which, given his background, isn't terribly out of the realm of probability. *sigh*

Still a very good, unique story about shifters, family, and strength. (even if I still didn't 100% believe Cyrus was all that in to Nate).

Awesome!!

I can’t believe what a gem this turned out to be. Exciting yet lengthy. Action packed yet sweet. I truly enjoyed the story and the characters.

I feel like this can grow into a series. But I’m not sure what the author has planned. There’s definitely a strong backstory that we aren’t privy to and I think that could turn out to be a pretty compelling read too.

But I’d love to see more of this Throwback pack 😉 The blurb doesn’t give much away so I really wasn’t sure what to expect and I’m glad I experienced the story that way.

There’s a surprisingly exciting and drawn out fight scene in here that is pretty impressive. Not for the faint hearted! It doesn’t pull its punches. Literally!

I’ll definitely be reading more from this author. Even though there are some editorial errors, missing words and the like but it’s not that glaring or annoying.

I enjoyed the central romance very much. The book needed more careful proofreading, and would have been stronger if the author either explained or eliminated some confusing and, ultimately, unnecessary bits . That said, I liked the way Cyrus and Nathan interacted, and I really enjoyed the way Nathan's paraplegia was handled.

This was such a fantastic story!!! *2nd read*

As with all of Cal’s other books, I enjoyed this from beginning to end.

Oh, I adore Nate to bits, he’s a wonderful character. Cyrus was also pretty amazing.
Most importantly: They were awesome together, loved their chemistry. They have a bit of a hurt/comfort thing going and were just what the other one needed the most.

Wonderful writing, lovely characters, scary hunters, loads of emotions and a sweet romance!

I’m not a huge shifter fan, at least not the common/typical shifter stories. I don’t do Alphas and Omegas and Betas and whatnot. I am not hating on the true love thing but it can get a little boring after the fifth time.

So with Lupine Road not being anything like that it worked even better for me! There was none of that crazy pack stuff and pregnant Omegas I try to avoid :)

Thanks Cal, for another amazing love story!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Even if you're not a huge shifter fan like me.

4.5. I’m honestly blown away with my first read by Cal Matthews. The reviews were great and it’s Kindle U so I gave it a go. It’s honestly pretty emotional as far as shifter books go and there is a lot to unpack in a relatively short book. This book made me FEEL though and that’s why I rounded up to 5.

It's always great if you start a book without any expectations and then get a nice surprise. This is what happened here.

I don't think that I would recommend the book for people who are into the whole Alpha/Omega/mpreg shifter thing because this book is completely different. Being Alpha is metioned but only in the sense as leader of a pack of wolves. There could have been a bit more world-building about what werewolves actually are (magic? a different species?) but that's fine.

The werewolves in this book are a family of drifters that are on the run from people who want to kill them and there are some really action-packed scenes in the book that were well done.

The romance flows nicely, even though it is a little insta-lovey but I'll take it because for once the MCs actually talk with each other. That doesn't prevent them from hurting each other but it makes for a nice change. Nate is paraplegic and I thought that this was deftly handled by the author. It doesn't get ignored but it's also not overplayed for drama.

This is not marked as the beginning of a series but it had better be, or else. I'm happy to say that the book doesn't end on a cliffhanger and works as a stand-alone but there are a lot of open questions that need to be resolved.

When I first started reviewing ARC's two Of Cal Matthews were the first I reviewed and I absolutely loved them. Here it is a year and a half later and I'm reviewing another of here books that I loved. "Lupine Road" has everything; shifters action, drama and an amazing couple. I loved both Cyrus and Nate, both of them wanting to lead a more normal life, both of them looking for that thing that's missing from their life. I wish I could say more but it would give away too much and I hate to give spoilers. I'll just say it's a wonderfully written book. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy.

I had a hard time connecting with the story in the beginning. I kept putting it down and it didn’t really hold my attention for any length of time. I’m not really sure why. I loved both the MCs. Cyrus and Nate were both wonderful. I think maybe I was just impatient to get to the meat of the story and it felt like it was taking too long. The last part of the book was really good. We get to find out why Cyrus and his family were constantly being hunted and we find out about Nate’s accident.

I do have lots of questions at the end of this book. There was a major plot point that was left dangling and I’m hoping the author writes more in this series, so we can get the answers. It also had a few editing errors that were a bit annoying, but overall I ended up enjoying the book.

I encountered a mention of Lupine Road on Reddit, and the second I read a synopsis I knew I had to read it. A family pack of werewolves living a transient lifestyle in the hope of not being caught by Hunters (with a capital H) come to stay at a small town campground located next to a drive-in movie theater. Cyrus, one of the wolves, meets Nate, the paraplegic owner of the campground and movie theater, and things get serious. The book covers a few of my favorite tropes and things I look for in romances: werewolves, diverse representation, small town setting, etc.

To begin my gushing, first of all, the disability rep in Nate is incredibly rich. The simple fact that they have a conversation (multiple ones, in fact) regarding how sex might differ is just... well, I've never seen it before in a romance, that's for sure.

I am not someone who particularly seeks out angst, primarily because I find it to be often trite and overdone, but it really works here. Both Nate and Cyrus, as well as the other supporting characters, have a lot of issues, but it's all understandable and it doesn't totally drag down the tone of the book (which is somewhat on the dark side, if I haven't made it clear already). It's dealt with quite deftly.

And a final rave: there are some action scenes in this book that caused me to literally stand up and start pacing the room while reading - that's how thrilling and tension-filled they are. The author leaves room for more books in this universe, either with the same couple or with a brand new one, and that is exciting as well.

My primary complaint is that the book needed another round of copyediting before publication, but honestly? If you can handle AO3-level reads, you can handle this (and this wasn't even that poorly edited overall).

Recommended if you're looking for m/m disability rep; bi (or pan, the character was unclear) rep; werewolves; if you like drive-in movie theaters; or if you just want something good to read.

Editing issues aside, I really enjoyed the first half of this. Nate is a sweetheart who is living with the repercussions of a bad accident, and Cyrus is a bit lost and frustrated with his pack after being on the run for most of his life. Their mutual attraction is unexpected and due to Cyrus not being in town for long they deem to make the most of the short time they have together. And in only a few days they come a long way.

What I couldn't connect with was the werewolf stuff...the pack hierarchy, the reasons they were on the run, the subsequent showdown (which I skimmed most of), and the ending. There were still a lot of loose ends left, even though it was kind of all wrapped up.

I really wanted to love all of this but it just didn't happen.

Nate saved this book from getting a lower rating. He was lovely and adorable, and I wish the entire book had been written from his perspective. Otherwise, it was kind of depressing, I didn't really connect with the other characters and it ended in a cliff-hangery way that was quite unsatisfying. It wasn't horrible, not by a long shot, it just wasn't what I was looking for.

Except Nate. He was cool.

Just one book? Because I DON'T THINK it ends with just one book. There are just too many loose ends. But I don't know..... I kinda want it longer

An engaging and surprising read.

Realistic, positive depiction of disabilities in a paranormal romance that not only has gay main characters, but humour, emotional intelligence and unexpected twists that work really well. There's also exploration into small town dynamics, family responsibilities and the long-term ramifications of other people's actions giving depth and pang to the conflicts and decision making.

Definitely not your traditional or yawn-inducing paranormal fiction. I'll be watching Matthews for future work.
