Edgar Wallace po prostu umie pisać 🙌 umie pisać akcję, plot twisty, bohaterów, wątki romantyczne... 🎀 Uwielbiam jego książki!

I know I've read this before because I recognize the plot, but obviously I missed getting it recorded here. There are so many enjoyable characters in this book. It begins with a gentleman burglar who we nonetheless recognize as a hero. We encounter a resourceful heroine who is super smart and will lie at the drop of a hat to get herself out of scrapes. The villain is obsessive, greedy, and possibly dips into insanity now and then. He's not enjoyable, of course, but he is unpredictable and therefore fascinating in his own way.
The young woman's father is hilarious and reminds me somewhat of Lord Emsworth in the P.G. Wodehouse Blandings Castle series. He's absent mindedly fond of his daughter, contemptuous of the villain, and dreads confrontation too much to do anything other than keep out of the way (except for some funny conversations with his daughter. There's also a dryly humorous detective inspector who is almost, but not quite, one step ahead of both the burglar and villain.
This is topped off with a plot that suddenly zooms off on a yacht to Morocco in the last third, taking us unexpectedly to an exotic land of intrigue and danger.
All tons of fun and now one of my favorite Edgar Wallace books.

Klasyczna powieść przygodowa z motywem kryminalnym i romansem. Czuć jej wiek, co jednak nie musi być wadą jeśli czytelnik pragnie "odbyć podróż w czasie". Składa się z dwóch części: "Romansu z włamywaczem" oraz "Małpy z tykwą", a jej akcja ma miejsce w angielskim majątku pewnego zbankrutowanego baroneta oraz w ognistym słońcu Afryki. I chociaż jest naiwna, to może być idealnym przerywnikiem w bardziej wymagającej lekturze.

Chyba najlepsza książka tych ferii, o czym świadczy to, iż skończyłam ją właściwie w jeden dzień.
Szalenie mi się podobała. Intryga doprawdy najmisterniejsza z najmisterniejszych, bohaterowie dopracowani pod każdym względem (choć może James i Jane wydają mi się teraz trochę zbyt płytcy, aczkolwiek tylko odrobinkę), a język to istne arcydzieło. Słowem, ta książka to faktyczne mistrzostwo, choć z pewnością znajdą się ludzie, którzy się ze mną nie zgodzą.
Uraz mam jedynie do tłumacza i wydawnictwa MG, że zostawiło taki tytuł. "Romans z włamywaczem"? Gdzież tu był romans, ja się pytam? To, według mnie, był kryminał przygodowy z wątkiem romantycznym tylko w tle. "Romans z włamywaczem", z całym szacunkiem, sugeruje jakąś tanią powiastkę komediowo-romantyczno-kryminalną, podczas gdy głównym planem tej książki jest jedna wielka intryga, w trakcie rozwiązywania której "przypadkiem" dwójka bohaterów się ze sobą schodzi w romantycznej relacji. Myślę, że już tytuł "Mężczyzna z Maroko" byłby adekwatniejszy, a idealnym podsumowaniem całej książki byłby ten: "Małpa z tykwą".
Wątpię, by któraś z książek opowiadająca o przestępcy oraz jego poniekąd współpracy z prawem porwała mnie równie mocno, co ta. I może przez to, że, mimo finalnych motywów Morlake'a, cały czas czułam się, jakbym czytała jedną z przygód Arsene'a Lupina, przekonam się również i do niego, bo w moim odczuciu Wallace i Leblanc piszą całkiem podobnie. Cóż, jednemu włamywaczowi dałam już szansę i pozwoliłam "włamać" się do może nie tyle serca, ale na pewno pamięci, pora na drugiego.

Era lucrată din piele de focă fină, totuşi trainică. În nenumăratele despărţituri se aflau o mulţime de scule, cuţite şi chei false ― toate micuţe de tot şi din cel mai bun oţel.
După ce examină vârful de diamant al unui sfredel, de mărimea unei scobitori mărunte, Morlake puse unealta la loc, strânse servieta de piele iarăşi sul, se rezemă de speteaza scaunului şi privi la lucrurile din faţa lui.
Locuinţa lui James Morlake din Bond Street era poate cea mai luxoasă din strada aceasta boierească. Odaia în care şedea acum bogătaşul era înaltă şi spaţioasă. Cei mai buni artişti mauri lucraseră ornamentele fantastice şi arabescurile, ce împodobeau tavanul. Pereţii erau din marmură poleită. A story of a thief, a murderer, and a Lady in between them. Filled to the brim with mystery and a touch of the Orient.
This book I purchased on a complete wimp one day and I don't regret it one bit.
It was an interesting story by a very talented author no doubt. The writing style was immaculate in my opinion, it was done in such a way that keeps you reading until the end.
The only slightly negative thing I will say is that for me the book could have been shorter, it was filled with a tad bit more scenes than necessary for the plot but nonetheless, it's still a good book.
I would definitely suggest you give it a read if you have the time :).

bardzo fajna książka, dobra na odstresowanie się.

zdecydowanie nie powinna się nazywać romansem. wątek romantyczny jest i jest ważny, ale ważniejsze (przynajmniej w moim mniemaniu) były wątki detektywistyczne i sensacyjne, które były bardzo dobrze opisane i zaplanowane. bardzo mogę polecić te książkę, jeśli szuka się czegoś lekkiego, z wieloma mniejszymi intrygami, które podbudowują główną tajemnicę aż do punktu kulminacyjnego, z niestandardowymi, ale świetnymi głównymi bohaterami to bardzo gorąco polecam.

The adventurous plot is interesting, dangers and suspense lurks on every corner. But I felt it lacked description for feelings, environment, and a little bit of detail. The novel felt like a shortenes version of the whole thing, with curt and abrupt sentences. Perhaps it’s the translation?

"Der Mann von Marokko" ist einer der besten Romane von Edgar Wallace, die ich bisher gelesen habe. Er ist abwechslungsreich und hat mehrere Verwicklungen, die einen aber nicht verwirren.
Hauptcharakter ist die junge adelige Joan, verarmt aber stolz, und ihr mysteriöser Nachbar, ein reicher Amerikaner. Und natürlich gibt es einen Kriminalfall, diesmal sogar mehrere, Diebstahl, Erpressung, Mord, Entführung und eine Liebesgeschichte - alles kommt vor.
Hauptcharakter ist die junge adelige Joan, verarmt aber stolz, und ihr mysteriöser Nachbar, ein reicher Amerikaner. Und natürlich gibt es einen Kriminalfall, diesmal sogar mehrere, Diebstahl, Erpressung, Mord, Entführung und eine Liebesgeschichte - alles kommt vor.

A collection of short stories from Edgar Wallace featuring a private detective who tracks down blackmailers. Snappy and highly readable, but a bit too basic and nothing particularly clever.
