In the early days, he attempted to write science fiction and high fantasy, but discovered it was more fun to write about people touching other people’s tingle-places (smut is cool.) while mixing in action, explosions, and plenty of WTF moments.

First off I want to say I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC of this book. Second thing that I want to make sure I say is I'm not a paranormal book reader.

Now that I've said that I must say this OMG Veil of Darkness is amazing. It's not just that Derek was thinking outside the box on this book. He was thinking outside the universe. I mean really, let me give you a breakdown on these characters in a nutshell.

1. Luca the Ghostbuster.
2. Emma the Guardian of Life.
3. Sutter the gay cowboy spirit.
4. Virgil the scholar spirit.
5. Bella the Husky.

Who in the heck could come up with a set of characters like this. Oh, that's right Derek can and DID!!

I have not laughed out loud as many times as I did with this book. The way he has all these characters interacting with one another he almost gave me whiplash trying to keep up.

Luca and Emma meet in a unusual way and right from the moment they set eyes on one another they immediately know they have found someone like them. They have never had that with anyone before. Both of them are so use to being basically on their own with just Luca with his spirit's and Emma with Bella.

I can not urge anyone enough to grab this book as soon as it is released on October 30th. Now the only thing left to say is Derek Adam where is book 2 and 3.

Derek for your first book  in paranormal...I say you hit it big. The way you got so detailed about ht was going on seriously impressed me. I love paranormal and this one was so damn good that I can't wait to see what books 2 and 3 are about. In this book we discover that demons and/or something else is terrorizing this small town. A town that Luca is from. In not knowing what is happening he's not sure what or how to help. Then we see Emma show up to catch the same thing. They are two people who are the same but different.  It will be a battle for the ages. The one thing we see is that they are definitely attracted to each other and I can't wait to see how that plays out.

I have read 2 out of 3 of Derek's books and I must say I am hooked. This series is going to one of the most talked about. They are so many things that I feel will be explained in the next one. To anyone who reads my review...it's a must read. Congratulations on another excellent book. I give this 5/5 stars. I voluntarily reviewed this book as an Advanced Reader's Copy.

This is Adam's first foray into the paranormal genre, and I'd say he hit it out of the otherworldly realm! The characters were quirky, colorful, complex, witty and unlike any others I have "met" in a story. The plot line was well thought out, unique and utterly captivating. Adam let his creativity and imagination flow and take over the pages and, wow, what a superb and stunning result! I can't even fathom what he might have in store for his readers in the next book in this series, but I know it's going to be GOOD!

*I received a complimentary ARC of this story in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.

(I was provided an Advance Reader Copy for the purpose of this review. The book releases on October 31, 2017.)

I confess - I went into this book expecting not to like it very much.

Not that Derek Adam is a poor writer: far from it. I had the honor to be a beta reader on his freshman effort "Mass Casualty", and let me tell you, the man can tell a story. He is a gifted writer who is getting better with each book he produces.

But, you know, I write horror novels...and this was a "paranormal romance." So I was predisposed to focus on the "romance" part and be dismissive of the "paranormal angle.

I have never been happier to be proved totally wrong about my assumptions.

Veil of Darkness is a rollicking ride involving two truly unique characters thrown together by their unique supernatural gifts. Druids, demons, spirits and more each have a part to play, all set within a rotting border town that owes more than a little to "Desperation" from Stephen King's novel of the same name. When the very environment is corrupted, those that dwell in it succumb to personal corruption as well.

Both the hero and the heroine are fully realized: no weak and wilting females waiting to be rescued here. These are individuals with strengths and foibles despite their supernatural gifts. If the electricity between them makes you a bit wistful, well, it is, after all, a "romance". But the action is unrelenting, and the relationship between the pair is almost understated.

And the hidden gems of the story are the side characters. The ghostly duo of Sutter and Virgil, and the husky familiar Bella, absolutely add dimensions to the book that are simply not present in titles that are so captivated by the hero and heroine that they forget the existence of characters outside of the romantic arc. They alone are worth the price of admission.

Evil powers, a great posse, a storyline that moves along at a great clip - what is not to like?

Well, you will never convince me that the heroine does not go through buckets of baby powder living in a leather bodysuit for eight days straight. But that is a pretty slim bone to pick. Buy Veil of Darkness. Read it. Love it. Then be thankful that Derek Adam writes very quickly and consistently.

Because you're going to want to find out what happens next.

Really short, but still entertaining!

So this is the story or Emma and Luca! They are two rare breeds of something and I'm fascinated to find out in book 2 what they are. I have my suspicions but I'll keep that to myself. Emma is a hunter for an elder council along with her husky companion Bella. She's sent to track something and kill it. When she arrives in this little town she meets Luca and her entire life and everything she thought she k she changes.
Luca is known as a real deal Ghostbuster. He gets called home along with his dead companions to help with a multiple murder investigation from his childhood friend Hitch. While investigating he comes across Emma and together they team up and start a journey of finding out who they are, what they might be or become. Great little short story. If you like mystery, demons, spirits, magic, and insta-love get it!

"So, is this a thing you do then? You're like some gorgeous monster assassin, chasing the creepy bastards back to their haunted lairs, hoping to keep the balance between good and evil?"

This was my first read of Derek Adam, and it for sure won't be my last. I loved this story! I am a big paranormal fan, but when a story line is this unique, and the characters this dynamic, I can't get enough!! This book has adventure, mystery, conspiracy, humor, and of course, dark and ugly demons.

Emma is....well, she's not sure what she is. But, her unique skill set makes her important to the Council. She hunts demons. Destroys them to keep the balance in the world. There's no one else like her. She is one tough woman - fighting tree demons, shadows, and faceless "veloci-monkeys" called Bodekins, and she has some awesome weapons too. She's been alive for over a century. And she's alone. She's learned not to let anyone close anymore. It never ends well for them. She's resigned to being alone. Until he shows up...with the other two.

Luca has a gift. He's had it since he was a boy. He doesn't know where it came from, or why, but he's used it as a calling. A modern day ghostbuster. People call him as a last resort to rid their lives of pesky spirits. Keeping everyone at a distance, he travels alone. Well, kind of. Two spirits tag along, bound to Luca through objects of theirs he carries. Virgil and Sutter are the companions no one else can see. Except her.

Called back home by the local sheriff and former best friend to assist in an investigation, Luca finds himself the last place he'd want to be. This trash-scented town. Arriving at the site of a grisly crime scene, he finds Emma wrestling with.....a tree? Forming an instant alliance, the two realize there are strange things happening in this town and they are in for more of a fight than they imagined.

They feel the connection to each other immediately. But, what is it? Why were they both in the same place at the same time? What are the odds that two people, with their unique skills, found each other? And what about that kiss? It all becomes muddled and unclear as to who can be trusted. Who is friend and who is foe? Can they give up their solitude and work together? Will they be able to rely on each other or choose to fight on their own?

This is the first book in a series, so don't expect it to end all neat and tidy wrapped up with a big bow. That being said, the ending will leave you wanting more and wanting to jump in Luca's truck for the ride to the next chase. Oh, and you're going to love Sutter!

This story was beyond my expectations.
I usually steer away from the "Paranormal" books, there is something about them I don't usually connect well with.
This was not that book. It was relatable and dare I say could someday be a reality?

Derek did a great job building his characters, I was sucked in right away with his story line, and I couldn't wait to see what happens next. This was a very complex book, in my opinion, a lot going on and he did a great job tying it all together.

This was my fist book by Derek and I will be sure to see what he has out there to get them all read!

Phenomenal!

I love Derek Adam and this book shows once again how versatile he is as an author. With Veil of Darkness he ventures into paranormal fiction and delivers once again. The characters blend so well together with Emma and Luca as the main characters and Virgil and Sutter being the sidekicks. Emma is tracking evil with her ever faithful dog, while Luca is ghost hunting with his sidekicks Virgil and Sutter. Once their paths cross they realize they share some of the same abilities and they take on evil together. Virgil and Sutter, Luca's 2 ghost sidekicks, have quickly become my favorites in this book with their endless banter. Derek Adam integrates his quirky sense of humor through these characters which often will leave you in stitches.

This is a great new book in this new series and will make you look forward to book 2. If you are a fan of paranormal fiction this is a must read.

Not "normal" Paranormal

First off I am a huge fan of paranormal novels, but this is so much more than any other book I have ever read in this genre. There are no fae, vampires, werewolves, or other mythical creatures that are often prevalent in others paranormal novels. Veil of Darkness contains demons, ghost, occult aspects and mysticism that seem more "real" (if you believe in that sort of thing) than any other paranormal novel I've ever read before. Derek Adam has set the new gold standard for all future paranormal novels. This book contains mystery, intrigue, humor, a touch of horror, and just the right mixture of sexy and romantic. Don't get me wrong I am still 100% a fan of Fae, vampires, werewolves, and shifters; but this was a fresh and different take on the "nornal" paranormal. I look forward to reading the rest of the books to come in this series. I eagerly await the next chapters that lies ahead for Luca, Emma, Sutter, Virgil, Bella, and Hitch.

Are you looking for paranormal without the typical humdrum? This is it!

Let's meet the characters that will suck you into their worlds:

Emma and Bella:
Emma is an enigma that we slowly learn more about. She hunts demons and can see thru the veil. She hunts them with her Siberian husky Bella. Bella hunts and follows her German commands but can still be a messy husky with all the curiosity that comes with being a dog.

Luca, Sutter, Virgil, and Hitch :

Luca sees ghosts and travels with his very own personal ghosts, Sutter and Virgil these three are hilarious together! They help rid homes of the ghosts that haunt them. Hitch..well he's the longtime frenemy of Luca who did him wrong many years ago, yet Luca comes to help him all the same.

Put Emma and Luca together and you have one hell of a ride. Follow them as they figure out this crazy paranormal adventure that produces more questions than it answers.

This is a fast-paced action adventure. There is an undertone of romance that is just right for the story. Which means it's there, your aware there is desire and longing but without taking from the story. The characters are well written and have enough depth to draw you into their world. While the big bag is so beautifully portrayed so that you can envision the horror and beauty that is evil.
Luca and Emma are a pair the can't put their finger on what the other is. They are cautious of each other yet find themselves drawn to each other in a way that is shall we say supernatural? Throughout the story, we learn about what Emma is and why she is what she is, but there are still so many questions that leave you begging for the next book. Luca seems open like a book, but I just feel there is more to his story as well.
My complaint on the story you ask....is that I have to wait for the next installment to release. But as a consolation, Derek has a couple more stories you can use to ease the pain of the wait.
Book 2 releases April 10th, so go one click this story now so you can read it before book 2 releases!

Curiosity killed the cat...

So Firstly I should say that I don't read anything that is paranormal/fantasy or anything that isn't modern day usually, But due to the way that Derek writes, and after following him for a bit (gosh I sound a lot stalkerish!) Curiosity simply became too much and I had to read something that I could quite possibly hate...

So when I think paranormal, I think sparkly Vampires and Hot werewolves... But after thinking about it, this was more fantasy, more like harry potter with odd evil little creatures and we are accompanied by an undead gay cowboy and a quirky spirit scholar who are really the stars of the show even though they are secondary characters. The author seems to be able to let loose and make them as quirky and as batshit crazy as possible, which I just love.

I loved the story, I loved the pace of it, and the entire book is amazing with quirky humour mixed with demons and other unworldly beings.

I know this hasn't hit the masses yet and I don't do spoiler but.....

You really need to read this book!

I'll redo my review once the book it released to give more of an opinion on plot, characters and what not but I can't do it now with spoilers....ain't happening.

Emma and Luca rock! Two people who can see past "the veil" and deal with things that go bump in the night. Virgil and Sutter....OMG, these two are the Abbott and Costello of the spirit world. I love them. Bella, Emma's husky and best friend. I personally think she at one time was human because she just so...so...yea. Hitch, now him I might have some issues with but I'll give him a chance to redeem himself.

Too early to get into plot and other folks/things that appear because of possible spoilers so now where I couldn't wait to get my hands on it, I can't wait to be able to talk about it with others! But I can say this right now....I NEED THE NEXT BOOK ASAP!

Emma is a demon tracker , non human, sent by the Elder council to find and dispose of demons that are in this world.

Luca is a human who like his Grandfather had the ability to see spirits and demons. He is a modern day ghostbuster who is hired to help these spirits progress to the other side. He travels with two spirits as did his Grandfather, Sutter and Virgil.

Hitch is the sheriff of the town he and Luca grew up in. They were best friends who grew up together but had a falling out when Luca's fiancé cheated on him with Hitch on their wedding day and went on to marry Hitch.

But now something is going on in their hometown. Something sinister. When bloody symbols are found all over several cabins. Hitch calls Luca to help.

This is the first book I have read by Derek Adam and I couldn't put it down!! It was filled with adventure, action, mystery and romance! I couldn't put it down and I encourage you to read it!!

Derek Adam has created an amazing world where his characters, Emma and Luca (love that name Luca!) have met under extraordinary circumstances, in Veil of Darkness!

Yes, it is a love story.
Yes, it is supernatural.
YES!!! IT is UNIQUE❣️❣️❣️

My favorite parts of the first book in this series are the fabulously funny conversations that happen between Luca and his spirits! I laughed and then felt a tug at my heart when Emma and Luca begin to rely on each other.

Please take the opportunity to purchase this book! It is one of the best paranormal romance stories I have ever read! There are so many nuances to the storyline! So many things to love! You will be harassing said author, as I have, to get to the next book in the series!!

This was a first time for me to read this author's work and it was time well spent! 5 main characters with their own personal story which was shared throughout this Book 1. Some romance which I hope to see develop in the next book in the series. I loved the Ghostbusters feel to this story.
"If she was a distraction before, I might as well walk around with a blindfold on at this point."
"I tried to cling to that feeling but it was fleeting and quickly buried under the constant molasses of dark emotion that was coating everything in the cabin."
"Like someone pouring whiskey bottles of ugly... and evil... all over everything and flowing like an evil river... full up of evil."
"It wasn't often that I felt any kind of dread, or discomfort, but it rolled over me now in waves.
I chose to read and review this book which was an advanced reader copy.

Holy motherloving shitballs, I knew this book wouldn't disappoint! I KNEW it! Derek creates this fantastic world, and the relationships within, and transports you right smack dab into the middle of it. There were moments I had tears streaming down my face in laughter; so much so that my husband was like, "WTF is wrong with you? *raises eyebrow*" and I proceeded to rave about these interactions (without giving any details away - he needs to go buy his own damn copy). I loved every single word of this book, and cannot wait for the next in the series. And the relationship between Luca and Emma...*sigh* Such a slow burn, that is going to erupt in an explosive scene of sweltering HAWT. And I cannot wait for it.

So good. So so so good.

Derek Adam shows his versatility with this start to a new paranormal series! I love a great paranormal story, and Veil of Darkness has me hooked! In this world on the other side of the veil, Emma is absolutely the perfect guardian, with her awesome sidekick Bella (I want one, btw)! She's tough, capable and utterly self-sufficient. Luca is your average hot guy paranormal expert, but he has a couple of spirit buds, and he can see and communicate with beings beyond the veil. There are demons to be fought, and lives to be saved. This was a fantastic story with engaging dialogue and vivid scenes! I also loved the sizzling tension between Luca and Emma, and they are like dynamite waiting to be lit. Can't wait for the next book in this series!

Veil of Darkness!!

Not what I expected, it was even better!!

First off I need to state that I don’t usually read paranormal, as in almost never. But this book was amazing and had me turning pages as quickly as I could read them. Derek Adam knocked it Out of the park with this one. The characters Luca (the ghostbuster) was amazing and very relatable. Emma (the demon slayer) gave me a little bit of a girl crush. And the secondary characters are just as fascinating. It’s hard to say to much about this book without giving anything away. But what I can tell you is, Weather your a paranormal reader or not this book was amazing and I highly recommend that you one click it immediately. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!!

Not sure what words can explain how much I enjoyed this book. Wickedly freaking awesome!
This being the first book in this series, it will grab you and you will hold on for the entire ride and ask to go again. I loved this, I was hard pressed to put it down at any time.
The characters are such a breath of fresh air, giving a new twist to the supernatural that has you turning pages to find out what happens next.
Emma is such a kick@$$ female character and Luca well, you can't help but enjoy him too. Sutter had me in stitches, Virgil you just wanna give him a hug and a Siberian husky to round them all out and keep them grounded. Makes for the perfect team up.
You HAVE to read this book. You are missing out if you pass on it. So don't! DO IT!!
Definitely a 5 star read.

This is the first time I’ve read Mr. Adam and I was pleasantly surprised. And to find out this is his first paranormal book I would say that I was more than surprised. He has a unique writing style that I just loved. Luca is a “ghostbuster” and has two spirits following him around, they help him solve cases. When he meets Emma she sees his ghost friends, which no one else has been able to see. He knows she’s special then, just not how special. Emma is followed by her faithful husky companion Bella. Emma official title is Guardian, she battles anything paranormal and this might be her greatest battle of all. But she has Luca and his two ghosts on her side now, will they be able to expose the bad guys in time?

I can’t wait for book 2!! I believe this series is going to be epic.

I enjoy paranormal, so this drew me in. For awhile I wasn’t quite sure what was going on, but it all came together.

Luca is a ghostbuster. And Emma hunts demons. Both were sent to find out who or what was coming. The characters are great, especially Sutter and Virgil. These two provide the comic relief. Hitch, we love to hate him because of his past with Luca. Over time, I’m sure we’ll love him too.

The author definitely created some interesting creatures with cool background stories. You can tell a great deal of thought and parts of himself went into this story.

I cannot wait to see what happens with Emma, Luca, Hitch, Virgil and Sutter in the next book.

I must confess that I am not a fan of the paranormal genre, especially paranormal romance. Vampires are just so overdone! As this is Derek's first foray into the paranormal, I wasn't prepared to be blown away!! He knocked this out of the ballpark on his very first attempt! I have never been so happy that my assumptions were so wrong.
Veil of Darkness is a thrill ride starring two main characters, Luca and Emma, who meet by virtue of their unique abilities to discern and dispatch otherworldly spirits including demons, ghosts, and Druids. The rotting, Canadian border town in which the story is set, plays a significant role as it is Luca's hometown, which he fled when he was betrayed by his fiancé and his best friend. The corrupted atmosphere contributes to the moral corruption of the town's inhabitants. Luca has always been able to see ghosts and this talent was nurtured by his grandfather. And Emma is just a badass: hunting and killing demons under the auspices of the mysterious "Council", with her familiar, a Siberian husky, Bella.
The supporting cast is supernatural; two ghosts who have accompanied Luca on his missions, both having a hand in actually raising Luca. They provide balance to the furious pace of the story, with Sutter, the gay cowboy sheriff as the (much-needed) comic relief. Twatwaffle?? Really? These guys really add dimension to the story and are intrinsic to the plotline.
This book has everything: a great plot, well-developed characters, evil demons, ghosts with heart, engaging dialogue, and a dog who is a woman's best friend. Derek neatly sews up some loose ends but opens the door for more adventures with the crew heading farther south. Want to know more? One-click this book; you are in for a twisty, fast ride on a fresh view of paranormal. Derek made a covert out of me!!

OMG... loved this book. Always been a scifi/fantasy fan, and Derek Adam has created an amazing story line truly ensnared me as I read this book. I loved the humor he infused into the story (I laughed out loud at Pope Kraut Von Lickenbum) , the side kicks are wonderful, Bella, Sutter and Virgil. I'm looking forward to see where he takes Hitch in the next book. With that being said... Derek write faster pretty please with a cherry on top, I am ready for Book 2 now!!!! I didn't want this to end, I want see how the relationship between Luca and Emma develops.

Oh my goodness! This book is freaking amazing! Emma and Luca are so kick-a$$ and I'm loving the slow-burn romance. The paranormal freakiness is AMAZING! The writing is phenomenal, the plot is interesting and very intriguing, and all of the characters are well defined and oh so interesting. I absolutely adored Virgil and Sutter. I can hardly wait for the next part of this story to be published! I've read everything Derek Adam has written and I loved them all for different reasons. This is NOT your typical paranormal, no shifters or vampires but it is engaging and oh so wonderful.
