Hunting ghosts and finding more than they bargained for.

Blaine Franks is a member of the paranormal research group the Supernatural Explorers. When the group loses their techie to a cross-country move, newly graduated Flynn Huntington gets the job. Flynn fits in with the guys right off the bat, but when it comes to him and Blaine, it’s more than just getting along.

Things heat up between Blaine and Flynn as they explore their first haunted building, an abandoned hospital, together. Their relationship isn’t all that progresses, though, and soon it seems that an odd bite on Blaine’s neck has become much more.

Hitchhiking ghosts, a tragic love story forgotten by time, and the mystery of room 204 round out a romance where the things that go bump in the night are real.

Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and persuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago."

I’m quite conflicted about this story for a variety of reasons, and I’m really not sure how to express my experience.

This starts off with a group of gay friends who are basically out to make it big by proving that ghosts are real. Flynn actually has the ability to feel, see, and possibly interact with said ghosts so he’s a very valuable part of the team - a team that needs another to help with data collection and analysis. Enter Blaine. He’s always been a believer due to feeling his dead mother’s presence intermittently throughout his life. Because of this, Blaine is determined to prove that this paranormal phenomena exists, and what better way to do that than to join a group of ghost hunters?

When Blaine first meets Flynn there's literally a spark between them and of course, the instant attraction pushes them down the hill at warp speed. The two fall hard and fast, and there just might be a bit of spooky mojo making their connection all the more fantastical, and it’s “babe, baby, honey, love” in a matter of days. *grimaces* In and amongst this uh-mazing time, strange things are afoot, sinister happenings start to endanger Flynn, and sure enough, there’s a tragic mystery to be solved and justice to be had.

I’ve only listened to Kenneth Obi once before, and he was more than perfectly serviceable. Here??? Not so much. I could not follow the narration well at all. I don’t know if it’s because my ears couldn’t easily distinguish “Blaine” from “Flynn” as they’re both one syllable and end in N, or the fact that there was inconsistent character distinction which was not helped by the seemingly rapid POV changes that made it hard to discern who was who was who was speaking. Oy. To say the least, this took me an unusual inordinate amount of time to get through, and that didn’t sit well.

Soooooo despite the insta love, the banter between Blaine and Flynn was mostly sweet and entertaining, the smexy wasn’t too shabby. The scary bits were tense and disturbing, so if you want that in your ghost story then don’t worry. For me though, this book was just… odd, and it was not helped by the narration. I’m not deterred though, since this is my first from Sean Michael. I’ll forge ahead with the next book whether I listen to it or not!

Thank you to the author/publisher for the audio in exchange for a honest review

This spooky story follows the Supernatural Explorers (AKA, The Supers), who are a group of close-knit friends who spend their weekends seeking and documenting various supernatural phenomena.

The story begins with the group welcoming a new member named Flynn. Flynn is fresh out of college and is super keen to join the ghost hunting clique. Lucky for everyone involved, Flynn fits in effortlessly, bringing a fresh perspective and a contagious eagerness to the groups explorations that just might provide the spark they need to get their ghost hunting careers on the map.

Flynn finds himself getting along especially well with Blaine – the groups resident psychic and the on-camera face of The Supers. The two hit it off immediately, but when a new ghostly expedition to an abandoned old hospital results in some significant supernatural events occurring – including a haunting and even a possible case of possession – the guys find themselves embroiled in a much more mysterious and potentially dangerous situation than they could have ever predicted.

I had a lot of fun reading this one. I loved the premise and I particularly enjoyed the whole story arc revolving around the abandoned old hospital and the mysteries surrounding the spirits who still lingered there.

There were plenty of thrills and chills to be had here and there were even some genuinely heartbreaking moments (relating to the stories of the dead and the truths The Supers uncovered while investigating the tragedies that had once taken place).

My only substantial complaint here lies in the dialogue. I’ve only read one other book by Michael, and if I recall correctly, I experienced much the same reaction then, too, but the dialogue used here was just so awkward and unbelievably unrealistic, all the damn time. Most of the guys in this story are meant to have new-age hippy-type personalities, but the number of times they said things like “rock on” or “good deal” was just ridiculous. And I can’t even get started on the various cringe-worthy endearments Flynn and Blaine started throwing at one another willy-nilly, practically from the moment they locked eyes on each other. I have no idea why all of this rubbed me the wrong way, but it did. It honestly took me out of an otherwise enjoyable story.

Shoving the weird dialogue aside, I most certainly enjoyed the supernatural elements of this story and I’m even looking forward to revisiting this group of kooky men in the future as they explore newer and creepier places in the name of science.

I liked this! But darn, the dialogue was bad...

This was quite the creepy ghost story and I was even scared a few times. I do have to say that the romance was not that great. But I liked it enough because of all the creepiness that it didn't bother me too much.

Blaine is head of ‘The Supers’ a bunch of ragtag gay men who are interested in the supernatural and who are actively looking for ghosts every weekend.

We start this story with Flynn joining The Supers as their new tech guy. Flynn has always been interested in the supernatural so is totally ready to prove to the public that ghosts exist.

The crew decides to check out an abandoned hospital where several murders took place years ago. On their first night they immediately get readings and Blaine even hears a killed ER nurse talking to him.

After several visits to the hospital the crew has lots of data and recordings of all the weird things taking place there. But Flynn has a feeling something with Blaine is off. The two have gotten really close in the last few weeks they have been ghost hunting together and they are now even roommates. But just as their friendship is turning into something more, Blaine keeps calling him David and tells him they should stay out of room 204 in the hospital….

This had some really creepy scenes and I loved them. I used to read horror when I was younger, but I’ve never once been even a bit scared when reading a M/M ‘horror’ book. Well, this had me clutching my comforter just a little tighter while reading this in bed at night. So yay to the scary aspect of this story.

I do have to say that the ghost storyline was what kept me thoroughly interested, because really the romance part kind of sucked. And that was mostly because the dialogue in this was so bad. Like really bad. (Who says ‘thank you’ when someone says ‘I really like you’ in a romantic moment??) I felt the conversations with the rest of the crew were trying to be a bit too funny at times but other than that they were okay. But as soon as Flynn and Blaine would venture into romance land it got awful. It was like these guys had no idea what to say to each other so they had weird awkward conversations this entire book. I was just really missing a nice flow.

Still, the ghosts kept me very entertained and even had me a bit scared. And in this case I was happy the romance took a bit of a backseat.

I was a huge fan of show Ghost Hunters with Jason and Grant from TAPS. I loved that their reason to investigate the paranormal was to debunk the probability of ghosts being real yet both men had their own experiences with ghosts. I won’t go into detail, but I’ve had my share of experiences and had “the voodoo man” explain my gifts so this book sounded like it would be right up my alley.

I’m Blaine Franks, and with my buddies Flynn, Will, Jase, and Darnell, we’re the Supernatural Explorers.

It started out really good as we get to meet Blaine doing his daily business working at the family farm and the first impression he has of Flynn the new tech guy to possibly join The Supernatural Explorers. It’s group of four friends who like to hunt ghosts and who are all gay. Flynn gets the seal of approval from the boys and he begins a minor crush on the face of The Supers and Blaine begins a crush on Flynn as well.

“Are there any horror stories associated with the place?” Flynn asked. “I mean, obviously people died here, but were any of them under mysterious or sinister circumstances?”

“There was a mass shooting in the emergency room in the early sixties. Eight people died. Four nurses, two doctors, and two patients.”

The ghost hunting aspect of the book was what I loved the most. I liked the guys going into the Eugene Thurston Memorial Hospital, to see if they can get any readings of ghosties hanging out and doing what they do best. The mystery of what happened in Room 204 was what kept me reading the book and it was as tragic as I hoped it wouldn’t be.

We’re told Blaine and Flynn like each other but I never felt it. We are told a lot about what they feel and they tell us out loud how they feel but the chemistry was a hot as a cold spot in a haunted room. I felt absolutely nothing for either of these boys. Yeah, I am calling them boys because even though they are supposed to be 33 years old, they talk to one another like they are perpetually 12!

“You two just keep thrashing over the same shit,”

Honestly this book dragged and went from interesting to OMMFG can we stop rehashing the same issue over and over again?! I get it. Blaine has a bad feeling about Room 204 but the voices kept telling him to go there and Flynn wants to know what the big deal is but Blaine won’t talk and ugh. They beat that issue to death and kept torturing it.

There is sex in this but I skimmed it because of the dialogue during and just wanted to find out what happened in Room 204. An insta-relationship happens and I skimmed most of that too. I just wanted to find out what happened in Room 204. Do we see a theme here?

This had a strong beginning that I liked but it was Sean Michaeled to death. If you are familiar with the author’s style of storytelling and like it, this might be for you.

Sadly, I think I need to steer clear of the authors’ work from this point on.

I’m just not that into it.

I had to look at the authors name several times to make sure it was indeed Sean Michael. This to me seemed so out of his sexy, erotic, dominating wheel house that I didn't want to finish but the story was very well written. The dialogue was "far out and groovy" it was so not the Sean Michael that I'm used to reading. He did use his trademark "love" but not as much.

This was a great addition to the Dreamspun Beyond series.

I love horror movies. From slow burns, to jump scares, to ghosts, goblins, witches and serial killers. Cheesy or classic, masterpieces or mediocre, I’ll watch them all! I also love horror books, so this story seemed like the perfect October read.

There is a found film, ghost hunting, trapped in a haunted asylum feel to the early parts of the book that linger into the first scene in the hospital emergency room. And then it just fizzles out. There’s no real build of tension, no purpose to the shooter or the ghostly nurses who try again and again to take Blaine’s pulse — though that first scene was well written.

Instead the story drops the horror pretense and goes for gothic, turning into a story of wronged lovers. And then turns that into a reincarnation, cursed lovers, vengeance ghost story that then… vanishes, like spirits in sunlight.

The story fails, for me, though it isn’t terribly written. It just doesn’t know what sort of ghost story it is. It tries on several hats, but they all fall off in order for the main characters to have their romantic resolution. But, even that doesn’t work. The spirit in 403 demands vengeance so badly, so pointedly, so violently, I expected a dramatic climax to their story. Something with gusto, if not gore. Instead, it… ended. Poof.

I still don't know what to write about this. I skimmed a lot. There's too many things spooky in this book, less romance. Labeled under Dreamspun Desires, I need more romance, not more ghosts.
I also didn't feel a strong chemistry between the two main characters. It left me feeling flat, and too many details of ghost hunting that I didn't like.

More thoughts to follow. I need something interesting to write, and I didn't find any. Yet.

Ghost stories are not really my thing, and horror definitely isn’t, but I figured that nothing in the ‘Dreamspun Beyond’ imprint would be too scary – and, luckily for my peace of mind, I was right. While real ghost/horror aficionados might think this novel not ghostly enough, or lacking brutality and gore, for someone like me who prefers things a little less intimidating, the “ghost factor” in ‘The Supers’ is just right. “Supernatural Explorers” is basically about, as one of the characters summarizes it, “Five gay guys in a shitty van!” Based on the blurb I expected an updated sort of Ghostbusters – and there are some similarities, but it turned out to be a different story: creepier, more suspenseful, less humorous, and definitely featuring more hot loving. The paranormal concept behind it is interesting and unusual, as far as I can see. It certainly kept me guessing for quite a while and made for a pretty unique mystery to solve.

Independent reviewer for Divine Magazine, I was gifted the AUDIO file of this book.

Flynn joins Blaine's paranormal research group, and they visit an abandoned hospital. Things get real creepy and the guys are faced with a possession, a haunting a tragic love story and a twist I did not see coming!

Another one of those books that kinda creeps up on ya and you have no idea, not a single clue about how its all gonna go down!

While there is immediate attraction between Blaine and Flynn, it takes a while for them to act on it.

The story of Room 204 builds at an even pace and there were points where I had to rewind, and double check that Blaine had in fact, called Flynn David. The story of Room 204 (that's how I heard it, with a capital R, if that makes sense!) did not play out how I was expecting it to!

It's a little . . . fluffier. . . than other books I've read of Michael (Three Wishes) but it is a DreamSpun Beyond and they are generally so. Just enough heat and passion between Blaine and Flynn to keep the heat level high, but not scorching. Right for this book.

Kenneth Obi narrates.

Mostly, I enjoyed Obi's narration. His reading voice is clear and deep and he got over the emotions of Blaine and Flynn in all the right ways, in all the right places.

His voice for the 204 ghost comes across as really REALLY nasty in some places, though, and that is probably why I did not see that ending coming at me.I thought the ghost was going to be a bit more vengeful.

And the voices Obi gives to Blaine and Flynn are far too similar for my crappy hearing to make out the difference between them, so I struggled a bit keeping up with conversations between them

BUT!!! I will give Obi another go, as this is the first of his work I listened to.

5 stars for the book
4 stars for the narration
4.5 (rounded down to 4) overall

What do you get when you read a book about a team of five gay ghost hunters, including a medium and a newbie tech guy/scientist, who are looking to find something amazing in an abandoned hospital where a mass murder happened? A pretty fascinating paranormal plot and a fun little mystery.

Blaine is the resident medium/psychic. He has always sensed spirits, and even to some degree can hear them and get a general feeling for what is happening in the spiritual realm. When Flynn joins the team, his abilities are ratcheted up and some crazy things start going down, with Blaine at the center of the crazy.

Flynn is not just your average tech guy, he is a scientist, and his goal is to get as much data as he can. He is inquisitive and all about questions and research. He is adorably excited to join the Supernatural Explorers, and can’t contain his enthusiasm. When some freaky things start occurring, he naturally wants to gather as much information as possible through a variety of methods, sometimes driving Blaine batty in the process.

It’s clear from the initial encounter that there is more to their connection than the mutual desire to prove ghosts exist, but the reader isn’t quite sure what it is, and that connection becomes part of the greater mystery.

The story took a while to draw me in. While it was setting the foundation for what was to come, the pacing was a little on the slower side for my tastes. I wasn’t altogether sold until about a quarter of the way through, when the action picked up, but once that happened, I was all in and gobbled up the rest of the story, wanting to know what the heck was happening to Blaine, what Flynn’s role and their connection had to do with it, and how it would all play out.

The Supers was mostly light-hearted in that the crew of the Supernatural Explorers were all jokesters, but there were definite creepy scenes added to the mix. Some even made my skin crawl. It made for an interesting dichotomy, these sort-of-adorkable guys caught in a nightmare, and trying desperately to figure out what was happening before one of their own falls prey to more danger.

Though I really enjoyed the ghost portion of the plot, and the characters were fleshed out, it didn’t all work for me—mostly the romantic portion, especially the dialogue between Blaine and Flynn. There were several phrases and word choices repeated throughout that I could have done without, as well as repetitive exchanges going over the same topics and saying the same things to each other. In all honesty their interchange was just not to my taste; at times it seemed forced and didn’t quite flow right, like what was being said didn’t quite fit the situation and seemed out of place. When the rest of the guys were in the picture, it created more of a balance, but when it was Flynn and Blaine, solo, it was more awkward than anything else.

Lucky for me the romantic portion of the book took a backseat, with the focus surrounding the ghosts from room 204. Seeing as I tend to really delight in books that keep me guessing, which The Supers definitely did just that, I ended up quite liking this book and would totally recommend it for the paranormal ghost story lovers out there.

Blaine and Flynn are ghost hunters. Flynn is the new member of the team as the new tech guy. He’s the one supposed to record and keep the data about everything they find with ghosts and spirits.
Blaine is the psychic of the team, he’s the one who actually sees the ghosts and spirits.
The team decide to go to an old abandoned hospital, it’s not the first one for them except for Flynn.

They were ready to spend a boring night, without much activity, so they didn’t expect to meet so many interactions and visitors, worst Blaine and Flynn seems to be the center of those paranormal activities.

What’s happens, really?

I loved this book, I really loved this book. It spooked me, totally completely spooked me (I can be a chicken sometimes)
Blaine and Flynn are sweet and adorable. As different they can be, they are complementary and support each other, they also want to protect each other, Blaine refuses to let Flynn near the hospital and Room 204.

The story and the plot were great and captivating. It was well written, super well written. How things took place, and how little by little, we understood that nothing is completely normal.
The author distills clues through the book that something was off, and it works, I was feeling uneasy, trying to understand what’s really happening.
The writing is dynamic, fluid, fresh, and I was completely hooked.

I was spook by the story. Ok, I read the book at night, with a mini storm, rain, wind, and trees knocking at my window…ok, I was completely terrified, BUT I couldn’t put my kindle down. Nope, who needs to sleep when you read a good book. And here, the story and plot are better than the characters.

You know sometimes, you read a book, and the story is good, but the characters are better and hold the story. Here it’s the reverse, the story by itself is a character, and it’s definitely my favourite one with the “others.”

It’s 4 OptimuMM’s for the Supernatural Explorers

This book was a bit of a back and forth for me. Starting both slow and abrupt at the same time, I found my interest waning until half way through when things really got going. After that I was enjoying it, up until the end when it dragged a little but. Overall I would say 3.5 stars, but I had enough interest for future books that I rounded up to four.

Everything starts off with Flynn joining up with the Supernatural Investigators. Right out of university, Flynn is enlisted to be the tech guy for a ghost hunting group as he has always wanted to prove that ghosts exist. The front man for the group, Blaine, also wants to prove ghosts exist; after all he has seen and heard them all his life. Flynn settles in naturally with the whole group, but he and Blaine really click and they start something up. But their first visit to a hospital goes awry and things are off after that while they all scramble to figure out what happened, and just how supernatural what they've gotten into is.

Flynn and Blaine sort of just strike up immediately. There is talk of how they feel 'sparks' when they touch, and an immediate awareness of each other. Each man is also physically attracted to the other, complimenting looks. But though they started up after that I didn't really feel that chemistry there at first. As they begin to work there is a moment when when Blaine is jealous and angry at Flynn for being sensitive to the spirits as well, and that honestly felt more really than the emotions before, but it is soon passed over and the two are back to being attracted. Their immediate segue into calling each other 'babe' and 'honey' also felt far too sudden, something even the group called them out on, though admittedly some of that could have been the possession. As they went on and the ghost incidents became worse and the supernatural started coming home, I could actually see the connection a bit more. In times of trouble the two really clicked, and that is what finally got me to see them as a couple.

The supernatural action in this book was really good. Doing a nice mix of a poltergeist type thing with some creepy possession bits and some ick factor, there were some very tense moments as the book went on. There was continual question as to whether the ghosts were malevolent or desperate, thought the actions in a way came across the same. It was creepy and intense, making for a really good read once the supernatural action started going.

A bit of a rough starter book for a series, but one with some promise. Curious to see where it will all head next.

I’m not usually a fan of paranormal, but I loved this book! It was fun, lighthearted, scary at times, suspenseful, and a dash of hot steamy sex made this a great read.

Supernatural Explorers is a group of guys (their only girl left and moved cross country) that hunt ghost and needed a new technician. Flynn Huntington is fresh out of college and is eager to prove that his mother’s spirt visits him when he needs her. At the first touch, something sparked between Blaine and Flynn. An electricity that was undeniable to both men.

Blaine sees ghosts, talks to them, so he’s the face that is always in front of the camera. It only takes a moment for Blaine to see that Flynn is perfect for the job.

The teams sets out to investigate an old, abandoned hospital and encounter much more than they bargained for. I don’t want to give too much away because I feel it would be easy to write spoilers into my review. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It felt like going on an adventure with the crew. The romance between Blaine and Flynn grows with each passing page as does the mystery of the haunted hospital and room 204.

Give this book a read. I think you’ll find that you really enjoy it. I know I did.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5

There was a lot of promise in this book, but I ultimately found it pretty frustrating. The first big issue I had was a complete lack of depth for either Blaine or Flynn. We learned the backstory for each of them but it had relatively little to do with their current states. The two fell in love almost immediately (in a week? Really?). Much of their relationship was them telling each other how much they cared for each other, though, and not enough showing this in their actions. I was unable to muster much empathy for either of them and this took me completely out of the story.

The book's point of view switches back and forth between Blaine and Flynn chapter by chapter. The problem is that the way the book is written it wasn't always clear whose POV we were seeing, and I saw some discrepancies in third-person narration that just made things that much more confusing.

As for the plot, it's mostly coherent. There are a couple of out-of-left-field bits that popped up that strained logic of the story. More importantly the tone of the story tended to swing rather wildly from fun and happy-go-lucky to dark and broody pseudo-horror. Everything was wrapped up neatly in the end (and the stage obviously set for the next three books in the series), and even though all of the plot threads were addressed I still found it all unsatisfying.

Perhaps if you are a fan of Sean Michael you would like this book. Anyone else, though, I'd suggest skipping it.

Very disappointing. Way too much sex--both in frequency and in duration--and way too little romance, in my opinion, especially for what is supposed to be part of the category line. The resolution of the ghost situation and the initial idea of the characters (e.g., gung-ho tech guy) gave it the second star, but having that bit of originality in the ghost-hunting trope almost made it worse when the amount of sex both on-page and off (and of a type that I, personally, found boring), lack of romance, and done-to-death (no pun intended) writing style bogged the story down so much for me.

This was way more spooky than I anticipated!

I was thinking this was going to be more funny than anything and –honestly – by the name I thought if some sort of Super Hero theme was going to play out – but there are no Super Heroes. It’s very spooky at times, and the ending HEA is even more sweet than I’d have thought by the half-way point!

I was very pleasantly surprised by this and thought it was a well crafted suspense story combined with a sweet and lovely supernatural story of love beyond time.

Highly recommended!

This is very different from the usual Sean Michael fare. It's not non-stop sex and actually has a story and I thought it was pretty creepy. It's four friends who are ghost hunters hoping to make it big on TV or the internet. A new guy joins them, unsure if this is all for real but he's willing to try. They end up having some really freaky experiences in an abandoned hospital including possession. I quite enjoyed the whole story of who/what the ghosts were. I enjoyed this a great deal.

I really loved this little book. The writing wasn't the most fantastic I've ever read, but the interesting plotline and amazing chemistry between the characters made up for that imo. This was a take on the trauma of the AIDS epidemic that I haven't seen before; I appreciated how this book was really about the lasting trauma of the epidemic and about breaking the cycle of fear for the generations that came after the epidemic. Huge kudos to the author for the clever and thought-provoking story!

I thought this book was great--romance and supernatural suspense. Good story, the characters were quirky. Recommend.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Audiobook Review:

Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5

Okay, I liked this story for the most part but there were a lot of little things that didn’t work for me. I guess from the blurb I thought these guys were established in the supernatural world much more than their little group seems to be considering they need to have day jobs to support themselves. The ghost hunting mystery was the main focus of the story which I enjoyed but there wasn’t any connection to the characters. I felt like I was just along for the ride and not invested in the turn out of the story and we were told a lot about how they felt for each other but not really shown. I don’t usually have a problem with insta-love but in the context of this book and with these characters it didn’t work for me either. There were a lot of interesting characters and I plan to continue this series to see how their TV series goes I just hope I’ll be a little more into those stories.

Kenneth Obi didn’t do a bad job narrating this story, but it didn’t work for me. Many of the voices he uses for the characters sounded like they were high or were grating on my nerves. I think the combination of the writing style and audio didn’t make this book as enjoyable as it would have been it I had read the book myself.

Cover art by Aaron Anderson is great and I love the visual of Flynn.
