Piras, the capricious and spoiled son of a military hero, dreams of becoming and elite Knight for the Nova Empire. But one day, when he (literally) crashes into a mysterious woman on the street, his life is turned upside down. Saved in extremis by a group of "terrorists" from monstrous creature, Piras is mesmerized by the strange new power that flows through him... only to learn the Empire will hunt him down for it. Piras' chamred life is definitely about to get wild.
Awaken is an action/mystery/psychological webcomic, heavily influenced by shonen manga, written and drawn by Chilean artist Koti Saavedra at awakencomic.com. If you like superpowers, monsters, dystopian universes, and deep, human characters, this is definitely a book that you'll enjoy having in your hands.
I really enjoyed this as the first volume to this story. While I can easily attest to this being a lot of set-up with not a lot of explanation, it's still intriguing enough to have gotten my attention! I find the art style endearing, and I love seeing all of the shonen influence here. I really hope Seven Seas continues to release this in graphic novel form!
I hate reading webcomics! It takes too long for a page to load and I get distracted sooo easily. So, I have to wait till someone prints them out. Really, I can try reading them on my laptop but I will just skim through the whole story without paying attention to the details.
Anyway, I stumble upon Minna Sundberg's works and I wanted to buy her graphic novel from Hivemill. I added two more items to my shopping list and one of those was Awaken. Too bad a Spanish print edition doesn't exist.
I was drawn to it by its cover and the read-head on it. I used to be very fond of read-heads... I started reading and I was... "WOW! That's interesting". I like the setting and the backstory. I'm not sure if I like Piras as a character, though. I mean, he's funny and brave and everything but every now and then he doesn't seem to be that smart. On the contrary, I really like the secondary characters, lil' Cian being my favorite.
The art is OK - even if I'm not entirely convinced by the way the author draw faces - but the colors are good. For example, the swarm aberrations were extremely well drawn.
The intermission between chapters were extremely funny, with the chibi-characters and the silly questions.
I hope the author decide to print a second volume, as well.
Bon premier tome. L'intrigue est assez ardue à suivre pour une bande-dessinée jeunesse, mais reste intéressante ! Les personnages manquent de personnalité, à voir comment ça se développe dans les tomes suivants. J'en garde un bon souvenir.
(4.5 so far!) A small review ;) Awaken is one of my favourite webcomics out there. The artwork is charming, the story interesting and the creator did a great job of making Piras an endearing main character. (Although he is equal part whining brat ;D .) The comic is currently ongoing and updates frequently (mondays, wednesdays and fridays) Find the comic here! http://awakencomic.com/
