Coming to terms with nagios configuration is only possible with a priest or this book.
Not having the former on hand, the book got me through.
I'm sure there are other books on the subject, but this one was comprehensive.

Gutes Nachschlagewerk. Leider bleibt Nagios weiterhin ein Tool mit etlichen Ecken und Kanten.
