A chance encounter… A deadly game of cat-and-mouse… Detective Ray Schiller’s relaxing three-day getaway turns into a desperate struggle for survival.
While his family faces an unexpected crisis at home, for Ray and his friends, the situation at their secluded campsite makes them the prey in a deadly chase through the surrounding untamed, backwoods terrain. The odds are stacked against their escaping the deadly, misfit couple and getting out alive.
What starts out as a three-day getaway turns into a fight for survival for Minneapolis police detective Ray Shiller and a couple of buddies. His wife, Gail, is facing an unexpected crisis at home (something she knew she’d have to address at some point, but was trying to put it off for a “better time”). While Ray is trying to save three lives, his wife’s at home trying to salvage her family. They both just want to get out alive.
This was an excellent read. The author did a great job of first communicating Ray’s relaxation, and then building up tension as he realized how screwed he was and what he’d have to do to save the day. I gained appreciation for his partner, who jumped on it when Gail called him because “cop’s wife intuition” was making her crazy when Ray failed to call home. While he initially poo-poohed her instincts, he later decided she might be right, and rushed off to help.
This traditional detective story had a good balance of work life and home life. Poor Ray, he can’t turn off being a cop even when he’s on a fishing trip. But it’s those same skills that ultimately keep him alive. The Schiller books are billed as standalones – the author cleverly wraps in details that bring readers up to date on each book, without flogging readers with what they might have missed. I still recommend reading them in order because I think it makes the series even better. I eagerly look forward to more in the series.
Marjorie Swift Doering definitely saved the best for last. She hit it out of the park with One Way Out, the sixth installment of the Ray Schiller series. I have enjoyed this series so much. I certainly hope Ray and Dick will make occasional appearances in future works. Thank you Ms Doering. Well done!
One Way Out is another 5 star book by Marjorie Doering. As with her other books it can stand alone or in sequence. The characters continue to be excellent and continue to evolve. I couldn't wait to complete this book in order to read the next one. As you're reading you get to know each of the characters better. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I did the first 4 books in the series
I’m writing this at 2:17 am. I’m typically in bed by 10:30 pm but this is the first book I’ve read in sometime where I can honestly say I couldn’t click the iPad off for the night.
Bummer is now I have to wait for number 7 to be published hopefully not long.
I’ve read the complete Ray Schiller series and enjoyed it so much I went back and re-read 1 - 6
This one is one of my favorites out of all 7. The fact that I read it in one sitting for the second time should be a clue
