Redclaw Security #1

The Panther’s Lost Princess

Rate this book
Ellie West has always known there was more to her story than being abandoned at birth. A child of the foster-care system, she didn’t get many breaks, but the one thing she can do is sing. It’s her only ticket out of poverty and obscurity. Nothing else matters, not even the nagging sense that she’s different. She's headed for great things. She only needs a chance.

Jack Ferris couldn’t agree more. His firm, the elite paranormal agency Redclaw Security, has been hired to find a missing princess and return her to her family. Discovering that Ellie, a waitress in a hole-in-the-wall diner, is both the princess and his fated mate is like being hit with a sledgehammer. Ellie West can't be his mate. She's the mission.

The sooner Jack completes this job, the better, only Ellie has no intention of throwing her dreams away for a kingdom she's never known. With hired assassins on their trail, Ellie might not have a choice. They must do whatever it takes to stay alive.

His job, find a missing princess to carry on her family’s dynasty. As an agent for the paranormal agency, Redclaw Security, Jack is a panther on a mission. When he found Ellie waitressing in a small diner and discovered her biggest dream was to get discovered on a national talent show as a singer and completely unaware of who or what she was, his job just got a whole lot harder, especially when he discovers she is also his fated mate. All he has to do is: 1) keep her alive 2)convince her there are magical beings in the world 3) convince her she is one of them 4)convince her they are meant to be together.

Definitely not his easiest assignment and certainly not what he could have seen coming. With hired assassins on their trail, his panther going all territorial and Ellie not about to give up her life for some wild tale of fantasy for the hot, but crazy guy, looks like things are going to get very interesting! Can Jack keep his panther in check, deliver the missing princess to a family she has never known and somehow win the girl of his dreams? Yep, definitely one tough assignment…

THE PANTHER’S LOST PRINCESS by McKenna Dean is a wonderful start to a new paranormal series that has action, adventure, sensual steam and some wonderfully funny scenes, besides! In a rags to riches story, one young woman will discover her true powers that have been hidden from her for her entire life, while finally getting over the much overdone body image woes and insecurities that exist in the paranormal world today. Jack has raw animal magnetism, yet is so far out of his comfort zone when he discovers who Ellie is to both him and his panther, it makes him very believable and very believably flawed! A nice, quick read with a surprise ending and the big reveal of what type of shifter Ellie really is!

McKenna Dean avoids being overly dramatic, and dark, making this a refreshing read in a genre that has so many stories within it!

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW.

The Panther's Lost Princess is a steady paced story that has action, witty interaction, steamy sex and lots of emotion that pulls you in and keeps you flipping pages as fast as you can read them.

I loved the way McKenna Deans' characters evolved through the story. Ellie is a heroine that is and isn't a damsel in distress (haven't we all had days like that!) and Jack finds himself battling between honor and his heart.

The secondary characters are strong and clamor for their stories to be told and while it is a stand alone read, it definitely would make an incredible series opener.

I found this immensely entertaining read (for mature audiences please!) to be a perfect afternoon escape! I highly recommend the read and can honestly say that you won't be disappointed with McKenna Dean!

4.5 stars. I don't normally read paranormals, but I recently saw an episode Midnight, Texas and whoa, there's an entire new genre out there with vampires and shifters and all sorts of supernatural romances that I hadn't even known existed. I really should get out more, I suppose. But at least I'm now embarked on a voyage of discovery.

Anyhow, this one popped up on some list or other, and I decided to give it a try. The only shifter story I ever read before was Mavin Manyshaped, so my expectations were probably a bit skewed into the realms of high fantasy. But Panther's Princess isn't that sort of fantasy. This is set in the here and now. Instead of high-fantastical world-building, Dean offers a rather gritty and decidedly poor part of the American south, but she does it really very well. There's a real sense of oppressive heat and ennervation, of scraping along just above the bottom whether the barrel be marked "economics" or "worldly goods" or "opportunity", a sense of desperation for something better. And when she gets to the purely shifter community, deeply rural and cut off, the world becomes ragged, barefoot, living on a shoestring. It has something of the atmosphere of the Joads' world, in the Great Depression: deprivation and making-do. All evoked and built extremely well.

Ellie is a waitress (aren't they all?!) who's looking for a break in a national talent show. Jack works for a rather unusual security firm, sent to find her and take her back to her long-lost family. Because Ellie isn't just a waitress trapped in a dead-end job in an equally dead town. She's a shifter, who's been prevented from using her talent all her life. I won't repeat the plot here. Suffice it to say that Jack isn't the only person looking for her, but perhaps the only one who's well-intentioned.

The heat between Ellie and Jack kindles instantly - a sort of fated mates scenario that I have some difficulty swallowing, but which certainly appears to be a staple in the genre, so I won't complain about it too much. the sex scenes I found sensual, rather than explicit. The scenes exude a tenderness, rather than just raw sexual urges and climactic mating, and there aren't too many of them. In my book, both of those points add up to a big plus.

Ellie's an interesting character, whose insecurities and lack of self belief only really recede when she finds her voice, and later, when she has to embrace who (and what) she is in order to help Jack. Essentially this is a story of someone finding her potential and eventually embracing it. I found Jack rather harder to read. Ellie's definitely the main character of the story and even when the chapters are from Jack's PoV, she's the focus. This is the first in a series, I understand, so perhaps Jack will have space to develop in future stories.

Altogether, a light and entertaining read. I'll read more in the series, certainly.

Overall: 4 / 5

The Panther’s Lost Princess is the first book in the Redclaw Security Series by author McKenna Dean. Redclaw is a security agency consisting of a variety of animal shifters. They are hired for different security jobs and Jack, a black panther shifter, is tasked with finding the lost dragon shifter princess. Ellie is a waitress and knows deep down there is something different about her. She doesn’t know what it is and does her best to suppress it. When Ellie meets Jack, there is an immediate attraction to each other. Although, Jack is determined to do his job and try to ignore his feelings.

I have a weakness for steamy shifter romances and The Panther’s Lost Princess is a fun and charming story! I especially love how the clans consisted of diverse animal shifters. In Ms. Dean’s world bears, beavers, hawks, leopards, etc. all live together rather than separated by animal types. I also loved how different animal species could be fated mates and be able to produce another animal offspring.

Truly enjoyed!

A definite add to your TBR list!

I really liked the heroine, Ellie, who is not a doormat and definitely has her own ideas of how things will be. She's knocked back a time or two with the stunning revelations about her heritage and abilities, but manages to recover quickly enough to save her own life and others' as well. I'm not really one for the "fated mates" trope in shifter fiction, but then in this book neither were Ellie and Jack! So while this was a part of the story, there was plenty of action, suspense, and danger which I found much more exciting.

This looks to be the first book in a series about the Redclaw Security Agency, and we briefly got to meet several of Jack's work team, who are all shifters as well. There were hints of interesting backstories for each of them, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of the series.

A great start to a series

Imagine you were born a dragon princess but didn't know it. Your magic was suppressed and you grew up in foster care, and now worked as a lowly waitress. This is Ellie's life. That is until Jack's company is hired to find her by her long lost family. She doesn't know that her family has already picked out a mate for her. But Ellie has grown up as a human, and she will fight for what she wants and doesn't want. Ellie has to force Jack to accept they are mates and fight for her

**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book.**

Where can I get a handsome panther mate of my own?

Jack's mission to recover a lost shifter princess leads him to a woman who doesn't even know who she really she. Telling her that she's missing royalty is hard enough for her to believe, but revealing the fact that she's a shifter may be too much for her to accept. Letting she secret slip that she's also his mate...well, that's a box he isn't sure how to open.

When a hot guy asks Ellie out, she thinks her luck is about to change. But this stunningly gorgeous man in front of her is much more than he appears, especially when he comes to her aid. He's a shifter and the only person who can protect her from the people who are after her. And her attraction to him is impossible to ignore.

Yet, just when things between them start to heat up, Ellie finds herself torn between the man she wants to be with and embracing her shifter side, along with the family she's always wondered about. She'll have to learn to harness her power and somehow survive the assassins that want her dead.

I really enjoyed this book. We are thrust into the action pretty early so it caught and held my attention in the first few chapters. I didn't want to put it down--even though I had to in order to read another book that was due--but I picked this back up as soon as I could and finished it in one evening.

The story moved at a steady pace and I think the supernatural element was nicely done. I loved seeing both sides of the story from the dual-POV. I definitely think this was the way to write this story because it helped me to understand both characters better. Sometimes with the fated mates angle, the insta-love is hard to swallow. Yes, there is instant connection here, but I never felt like the relationship between our couple was forced. It was a pleasant surprise.

As for the romance, our couple's chemistry sizzled and popped. Jack was a realistic character with faults and that only made me like him more. Ellie was head-strong, but not to the point to where it became annoying. I think this pair were nicely done and I rooted for them early on. The ending did wrap up a little too neatly, but it also left me wanting more.

In closing...
I'm looking forward to seeing who meets their match next, though I have a feeling that Jack's boss might get his turn soon. Five suns!

The Panther’s Lost Princess by McKenna Dean is the 1st book in her new Redclaw Security series.

Ellie is a waitress with a dream, she wants out of the small town she lives in, she dreams of being a singer, so when a chance to audition, Ellie grabs it with both hands.
She knows she can sing, but Ellie lacks belief and confidence in herself. Ellie thinks she’s a monster ……

Her parents abandoned her at birth, and the foster families never seemed to want her for long, there has to be something wrong with her ….. right? And on the night it all comes crashing down around her, she notices things ….. things that a “normal” person shouldn’t be able to do.

Jack is employed by Redclaw security (a firm specializing in shifter business), from bodyguards to surveillance. He’s suppose to find a “princess” retrieve her and bring her back into the arms of her “real” family.

But what jack doesn’t bank on is finding his “mate”, yup you got it …… the princess, except she’s not what he was expecting, he assumed she would be tall, blond and a complete bitch …… “Ellie” is the exact opposite, and all his animal side wants to do, is bite, mate and carry her off to safety. But he knows that the princess would never look at a lowly bodyguard, she deserves better, and so he is determined to get her to safety and the live he thinks she deserves.

The story moves along at a nice pace, finding out about the characters along the way.
The secondary characters were great to read as well, I’m hoping they get stories too.
There is a nice balance of action (and not all between the sheets) and romance, nothing worse than skimming pages due to bedroom gymnastics (that last for pages, and pages, and pages)

Why was Ellie abandoned by her parents ? Who wants to kill her? (There are several attempts) and if she isn’t a monster, then what is she? Will Jack get his wish? You will need to read this book to find out.

It’s a fun read that can be done in an afternoon.

The Panther's Lost Princess is the first book in the Redclaw Security series, and I can't wait to read more! We start off with Ellie, a waitress who wants to enter a singing competition. She is all alone but has her job and her friends. Things start looking up when Mr Hot Stuff turns up at the diner where she works, and seems interested in her. Mr Hot Stuff, otherwise known as Jack, is having a dilemma though. Ellie is his fated mate, but he has a job to do, which involves handing her over to her family. What's a shifter supposed to do?

Now, through no fault of the author, I thought that Ellie would be a panther, so imagine my surprise and delight when she turns out to be... well, something else! All of the characters in this story, whether they are mentioned a lot or a little, contribute to helping the story to move forward. The pacing is smooth, with one scene transitioning easily to the next. There were no editing or grammatical errors that disrupted my reading flow. This story was thoroughly enjoyable, with plenty to offer the paranormal fan. Looking forward to the next one, and definitely recommended by me.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and my comments here are my honest opinion. *

The Panther’s Lost Princess was the first shifter romance I’ve ever read so I went in not knowing if I even enjoy that genre. What drew me in immediately was the author’s beautiful writing style and her decision to NOT make the heroine look like a model as is so often the case in romance novels. I also loved that the author used the story as a vehicle to highlight a number of social issues such as poverty and casteism. Ellie West is an idealist at heart, and since I’m one too, I could identify with her strong desire to improve the livelihoods of the people she meets along her journey.

Oh my gosh this was so sexy. The day that Ellie met Jack nothing in her world made sense any more, she was not the person she thought she was. The forbidden attraction between them made Jack struggle to do the right thing, or was it really the right thing? Jack does not realize just how feisty and determined Ellie is to become who she wants to be, not what others expect her to be. Thank you Reading Alley and McKenna Dean for allowing me to read this and write a honest review.

**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

There are books that upon finishing them leave you completely satisfied; they contain no huge cliffhanger or questions unanswered. For me, The Panther's Lost Princess is one of those very books! It had one of those endings that just leave with a huge grin and a deep feeling of satisfaction. Not only was the story interesting, but I was able to truly connect with the main character, Ellie West.

Ellie has never felt confident about herself. Despite getting support and words of encouragement from her friends, she is still scared to put herself out there and take charge. I definitely don't blame her for this. It is hard to put yourself out there after you have been looked down upon. She does however gain the courage to audition for a singing competition, which in itself is an amazing feat!

As the story continues, we get to see that deciding to audition isn't the only bit of braveness that Ellie possesses. Instead, she evolves and discovers a confidence in herself that wasn't there before. She does have a little help with this amazing awakening through the support of a handsome panther shifter. 😉

Yes, it is true that this book does involve the whole fated mates trope, but it does have a slightly different spin on the cliche. Instead of being super possessive and domineering of Ellie, Jack supports her and ultimately wants to do what's best for her. Their relationship truly is pretty stinkin' cute!

Overall, The Panther's Lost Princess is a satisfying romance that not only has a shifter spin, but also allows the reader to see a character come into her own.

Too much telling and not enough showing. I don't want to be told protagonist Ellie is frustrated, I want to be shown by her lips pinching together or rapidly tapping her fingers or scrunching up her face and then releasing it simply trying to calm down... the same with Jolene's envy - show us with body language and movements, don't tell us.

While the plot was interesting enough and the "mix-n-match" mates (a mate could be a species other than one's own and who knows what offspring might be, should they have any - example, male lead Jack was the child of a bear shifter father and hawk shifter mother) was off-putting at first but actually kind of grew on me, a promising storyline became a tedious read for me due to telling the entire story and not showing.

There was spelling, grammar and punctuation errors, with the most prominent being an extra word included in a sentence, a repeated word like "in". The tale itself wasn't bad, it was simply a long, long read for me with all the telling and no showing.

I really enjoyed this book!

Ellie was brought up through the system with various foster parents, she has no idea where she came from or who her family is or that she has amazing hidden abilities. In a world where shifters are known and people coexist with them she has lived a somewhat normal life. Working as a waitress, waiting for her big break as a singer!

What she didn’t expect was that she’d meet a sexy stranger who asks her out which sets off a chain of events that will change her life forever. They band together along with a few unexpected allies and battle to stay safe long enough for Ellie to figure who she really is and what she’s truly capable of.

Finding peace, Ellie and Jack are happy at his family compound with his new position as their clans leader. The effect has a big positive outcome for the whole clan and the community finally have a happy life.

Will happily read more from McKenna. Great writing and brilliant characters!

Shifters, drama, suspense and romance

Such a great book. It has Ellie who was abandoned as a small child with no clue to her parents or heritage. Jack's job has Ben to find Ellie and return her to her Grandfather. Their adventure goes differently than planned and they find themselves facing challenges they didn't expect. Does have a TEA but I still want more.

Have you always wanted to be a dragon?

Shifter stories are always fun, but this is the first with a modern dragon for me. Truthfully I bet there are a are a lot of us that wish they could shift. But, as in this story the fear of the unknown, the fear of others being different is evident in our world today, how sad. So, settle in and enjoy, and maybe dream of shifting.

Very enjoyable

I read this out of order but it didn’t make a difference. The flow of writing and the plot lend themselves to easy understanding. The world-building is simple and believable. It is very easy to accept princesses that don’t want to be royal, big sexy cats and evil doers out there. Jack is adorable, our dragon a gem and the story a very enjoyable read.

Love, love, LOVE this series. The book was easy to read but not predictable. A few surprises, and one stubborn man. The spice was about a 2, but enough to make it interesting and furthered the plot.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a little mystery, a little spice, and a few surprises!

Fun, fast-paced book. It starts off with Ellie's lost-princess plot, then shifts to Jack's troubles with his old clan, before bringing the two threads together for the climax. The romance is fated-mates style and medium-heat sexy. Smooth, witty writing makes it an enjoyable read.
