It seems I can't enjoy this series as much as I wish. There's always something missing, that thing keeping me from starting liking it.
Every chapter has a different story, and I don't know if it's that the main problem I have, but I have troubles finding a real storyline. It seems that every time the side stories get the best over the main plot, confusing me on connecting all the different scenes that are part of the main one.
There are new characters appearing here and there and they will hopefully stop at some point to start concentrating on what we already have and start creating a solid story for all of them.
I'm really liking this. The supernatural creatures and their plots are so interesting. Kabane is an interesting creature that can't die and he just does whatever people tell him to do. He does have a mind of his own but he just kind of goes with the flow. His new friends and his boss are great. Definitely want to see where this goes.
Love this series and I’m surprised how close the anime is to the manga. Kabane and Kon are my favorite characters and are so cute together. In fact, all the characters in this manga are well fleshed out already. I’m looking forward to when Shiki’s backstory comes up. This is one of the best shonen manga series out there now. It’s a must read!
I first read this manga back in 2019 and decided to reread it after binge-watching the anime. I liked officially meeting Inari and Kon, and hope to see more of both ladies in future volumes. I’m especially curious about Inari’s connection to Inugami. Seeing a vampire named: Mihai living in the back of was very interesting. I’m not exactly sure what to make of him yet, although I’m glad that he’s an ally of the Inugami Detective Agency and not an enemy.
I think I've stumbled across something special with this series. At the outset, I think I was expecting straight-up horror, but while there are elements of that, Kemono Jihen isn't really what I'd bargained for. The story is both funnier, and more dramatic than I would have guessed, and it's told with an awful lot of heart. Every character here has something that makes them interesting--even the somewhat exaggerated villain of Inari has some depth and motive to her actions. But it's the connections between them that really make Kemono Jihen shine.
Just focusing on the detective agency, alone, you'll see that the members are less coworkers, and really more of a family...with the possible exception of Mihai, but we'll see how he develops as the story goes along. They've all got their faults, but their endearing qualities as well, and seeing how they all (or at least most of them) support one another lends a real feeling of authenticity to their relationships. Even when they have differences or arguments, at the end of the day, they've got each others' backs.
And don't even get me started on Kon. In this volume, she goes from an almost robotic, single-minded servant, oblivious to anything but her orders, and becomes surprisingly sympathetic. And despite how relatively quickly it happens, in a page-count sense, it didn't feel rushed to me. She's been cast adrift, she's vulnerable, and she has nowhere to go and no one to turn to. And the person she runs into is perhaps the least-well equipped to help. But still, he's trying.
This is a very well-written series so far. It's not quite shonen, it's not quite horror, and it's not quite slice of life. But the weird amalgam of all these things comes together through some kind of alchemy, to produce a rather wonderful result. I'm very excited to see where this goes from here.
Another 'monster of the week' set up but Kabane is different enough and interesting enough to keep me going. He has no idea how to even be human, not because he's that much of a kemono (think faerie or demon realm sort of creature) but because the people who raised him dehumanized him. Of course he isn't human and his type of kemono has impressive regenerative abilities (think Deadpool)
Inugami has taken a shine to Kabane and has made him part of the kemono investigative team. Kabane ends up crossing paths with one of Inugami's frenemies, an Inari spirit and there's the whole vampire thing that Kabane gets swept up in. His two young companions get a little fleshing out, well not so much Shiki (who looks a little like and acts a bit like Bakugo from My Hero Academia) and Akira (at least we learn why he acts and dresses feminine which could be tied in to the type of kemono he is because he definitely doesn't want to be a girl at this point in the series at least) gets a bit more fleshing out.
There aren't any female characters within the agency but we get a few from outside but Kon is not a female character I'd ever want (a hundred percent dependent/in service to the Inari character and seems to have very little independent thought or the ability to think much at all).
I'm finding the plot interesting enough to keep me going but I do rather want more from it.

It started off pretty epic with Kabane being decapitated by the Superintendent General who is wily woman who wants to take Kabane's lifestone. And as her minions are removing the separated pieces they realize the henchwoman has transfigured and realize just what has happened, luckily saving Kabane so that he can begin work at the kemono detective agency and befriends this curious girl creature.
I'm indifferent after the first volume and the first few scenes of this volume since the creatures are so well-drawn but the storyline isn't as strong to match.
Volume 2 keeps the fun vibe and unique tone of the first, making every chapter a joy to read. These characters are just brimming with personality, and this volume in particular showcases that. Kabane and Akira are two of my favorites. I also love the new character they introduced, Mihai. I have high hopes for this series, and we'll see how it goes.
This is becoming way more goofy than I thought it would be, but it's still interesting enough that I'll keep reading a bit more. It's also another manga where my old farty-ness is showing and I'm just wondering where the adult supervision of these kids are.
This volume was so wholesome (besides the human/cat thing). Kabane is such a sweet boy, even if he himself doesn’t realize/understand much about how feelings and emotions work. Onto the next volume!
This series is a mix of cute, sad, wholesome and disturbing and it works. The characters are a bit typical of the Shonen OTT types but their quirkiness works well, at least so far.
