CAUTION: EXTREME PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR CONTAINED WITHIN This is an extreme psychological horror book. It contains scenes of gratuitous sex, violence against humans, and inanimate objects that didn’t deserve their fate. Well, maybe some of the humans deserved it...
There is one nightmare that every man around the world shares in common. A very real terror that strikes fear into their hearts that no woman could possibly ever understand. What if he opened his eyes one day and his penis was gone?
SETH wakes up in a narcotic haze in a bathtub full of ice. He's cold, numb, and disoriented. When he climbs out of the tub an unbearable pain rips through his groin.
He's been castrated. Everything that made him a man removed, and all that remains is a neat row of stitches from his pubic bone to his taint.
There's a phone in the corner of the room that doesn't belong to him, and a text message waiting for him to read.
I think this is probably one of those scenarios that most men fear. Waking up in an unknown location, with no memory of what happened, with their manhood removed. Nightmare fuel, for sure. So here we follow Seth, who is a very cocky, arrogant, and selfish young man. He is nasty and manipulative to many women, taking advantage of them, however needed, to satisfy his own carnal needs. He doesn’t care if they’re drunk, drugged, in pain during intercourse, etc. So you dislike him from the start and, while kept curious about what happens, pretty much hope that he doesn’t retrieve his privates, and is killed in a very painful manner. But you follow him, as this unknown assailant disfigured him, and makes him go through a painful and embarrassing journey to remedy some of the atrocities that he committed over the years. You feel so terrible for all the people he involved and for the awful things that he made them be a part of. The story isn’t necessarily a nail-bitter, but it keeps you tense throughout. Rape also plays a role and is described a bit, albeit brief, so trigger warning there. But I enjoyed the concept and execution. Seth is a polarizing character who you love to hate, and I think the finale was fitting for him. This is high up on my list of favorite books from The Barns Brothers.
I was totally addicted to this book and got engrossed in it from the very first page. The storyline was strong and the characters were well developed throughout the book...but...I did wonder at times if a man who had been castrated by a psycho bitch from hell would actually be able to survive the terror operation and do all what Seth achieved?? But I managed to over look this small detail and enjoyed "Severed" with all it had to give in the way of gore, violence, brutally and torture.
5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'s because if I had a pair of balls they would no doubt have been aching throughout the entire book! 🤣🤣🤣
So this book scratched my itch for a short, fast paced thriller, but I have to give it a low rating because of the ending.
It does explore an interesting dissection of toxic masculinity through a good mixture of gore and tension. But the ending undoes the entire purpose of the story - toxic male gets castrated and must make amends to get his penis back.
In the end, he gets a transplante, hot wife, makes amends with old flirt so he can see his kid. I felt like Seth had learnt nothing. The mysgonistic POV is something that I can deal with, as it seems on point on displaying the toxic culture that Seth is part of. What I can't deal with is Seth not facing any long term consequences. There are minor hints at him maybe being unhappy in his marriage by the end, but I feel like Seth got away with it.
What got my blood boiling wasWarren's afterword though: "I had a huge amount of fun writing this story, dreaming up a plot that would be any man's worst nightmare... And thought 'sheehs, am I being too tough on poor Seth?'"
Errrm, no. Seth has to atone for the following: 1. Drugging a girl, which results in her getting gang raped as he goes to look for condoms. He sees but doesn't intervene/calls the cops. 2. Not supporting a girl that he has unprotected sex with and likes. Essentially leaves her to face her parents alone. The morning pill doesn't work, and she can't get an abortion, so she drops out of college to get a job and raise her son. 3. Immediately after witnessing the rape (like minutes), he has a pity fuck with a girl, where he shows no consideration for her comfort/needs. I'm daring borderline rape.
So no. It's not poor Seth. Can we talk about how above is any woman's worst nightmare?

The story begins with the urban legend trope about waking up in an ice-and-water filled bathtub with an organ missing. If you're reading this, I surmise you can pretty much guess which one it is. In any case, I can hardly imagine how it would feel to wake up literally emasculated. Thankfully this novella took care of that, and yes it did deliver.
I remember thinking that the only way that what happened to our lead could ever be justified was if he and in a way I was correct. Not a quarter of the book has passed and I found my sympathy for Seth evaporating. But this story is neither shallow nor simplistic, and before the end I was rooting for him again.
There were some things here that were off - like I don't think you can lop off someone's junk courtesy of YouTube tutorials without ending with a corpse (much less a functional human) on your hands unless you're a med student at the very least. It's still enjoyable, so I'm giving it 6.5/10 or 3 stars out of 5.
I have mixed feelings about this book. It was fast-paced and intriguing, but all of the characters were loathsome so I quickly realized that I didn't really care what happened to them
I loathed every single character in this short book. I really did. But it is very fast paced, it is highly entertaining and to be honest with you, I found myself engrossed in it far more than I expected to be for what it was. I wouldnt call it all that shocking, vile, disgusting when it came to horror but I would say human nature and behaviour in this one left a dirty taste in my mouth. You will hate everyone in this book and possibly hate the smug ending too but you will probably enjoy the ride to get there. I shamefully (un-shamefully) did. Entertaining stuff. Thank you.
Meh. I really wanted to like this book, I loved the blurb, but I really didn't like the story itself. I find it really hard to enjoy a story when I don't care about the characters. If it wasn't for the last chapter, I might have given it 3 stars, and I kept hoping that it would gain my interest, but the ending just got on my nerves
A tale of revenge using an extremely violent method to motivate the offensive, insensitive male. An enjoyable read, but some weaknesses in character development. As an alternative ending, the donor could have been his new paramour, thereby satisfying two needs. ;-)
Extreme horror? There is nothing so far fetched in this wonderful entertaining read, that does not or is not possible on college campuses around the world. Keep up the extreme writing.
I liked it. It was quite the thriller! I would say my only qualm is that the person behind Seth’s torture is predictable to guess. Otherwise, I lost sleep wanting to finish this story. It was hard to put down.
Man has Penis cut off becaus he's been a prick thorough life is sent on a hunt for his penis and redemption, really enjoyed the mission this asshole is sent on and I feel that it ended very well, loved this book, the barns brother keep knocking it out of the park!!!
Great story about a player who wakes up in a bathtub missing a necessary part of his body. Seems he must redeem himself to get that part back. Bloody good.
I've no idea where these authors get their stories from, but I'm glad they do, great read if you like gore, but men, please be aware, you may squirm in some bits lol.
Rating: 2.5 ⭐️ Gosh, first of all this was amazingly written. Fun anxiety-inducing, fast paced. Not one boring moment. Loved the descriptive body horror that makes you squirm. BUT that ending was terrible. I felt there should’ve been a bit more long-term consequences. Besides the OBVIOUS of course. It felt too happy of an ending. Honestly I was looking for more of a PERMANENT demise. Again, loved the writing in general and definitely going to check out the other books by The Barns Brothers
SEVERED moves fast. You're dropped right in when Seth wakes up sans glans and is forced into a race against time to save his favorite toy. On one hand, SEVERED wasn't the grotesque tale I thought it would be. It doesn't rely on gore and depravity to move the plot along. That's refreshing, coming from the "extreme horror" genre. Seth is a dynamic character. Even though he's a jerk, I was rooting for him--mostly.
On the other hand, once I knew what I was dealing with, the plot was easy to figure. I don't read these books for their subtlety, though, so I'm not going to whack off any points for that.
Enjoyable despite the sympathetic pain I felt throughout the novel. The Barns Brothers are killing it in this growing niche genre.
Sickening turn out for a guy that was enough of a turd to deserve it. The crazy thing is that this guy could be anybody because he didn't know he was actually the huge douche bag he is until it was too late. Entertaining, engrossing, yet despicable read. I'm up for more!
