Anna Hamilton’s life is becoming more complicated by the day. After her father receives a devastating cancer diagnosis, she drops out of grad school to come home while he undergoes treatments. Fortunately, she gets her old job back on a local whale tour boat—but at this rate, she’ll never get back to finishing her Marine Biology PhD. Especially with distractions like the town’s newest bachelor, Michael Madden, a businessman with gorgeous eyes who snags Anna’s attention.
Then Anna’s old college roommate, the beautiful East Coast socialite, Elise Kensington, calls with an odd request. She needs a place to lay low with her fiancé, who just happens to be an ex-Mafia member that wants out of the "family business." The young couple hope Anna and the small town of Hartland Cove can keep them hidden long enough to safely elope.
Since beautiful, quirky Hartland Cove is known for its historical Kissing Bridge, the town has also caught the eye of Hollywood and suddenly Hollywood scouts and directors are crawling all over the place. But nobody knows the town and its secret hideaways like Anna and her childhood friend, Chad Garrett, who turned from skinny teen boy to one devastatingly handsome man over the last few years.
When Chad begins to show an interest in her while confessing his own long-time secret, Anna’s feelings become more confused than ever. With paranoia over the Mafia circling closer and Anna questioning her future, this summer will be one Anna will always remember—if her heart can survive the secrets—and the truth.
If you like second chance love stories, then you’ll love THE MAFIA'S SECRET, the third title in the Secret Billionaire Romance Series.
Kimberley Montpetit once spent all her souvenir money at the La Patisserie shops when she was in Paris—on the arm of her adorable husband. The author grew up in San Francisco, another swoon-worthy city, loves all things Parisian and chocolate and lives in a small town along the Rio Grande with her family.
Kimberley has won many awards for her work, including the Southwest Book Award, the Whitney Award, the Arizona/New Mexico Book Award, is a Crystal Kite Finalist (SCBWI) and included in the Bank Street College Best Books of the Year.
She once stayed in a haunted castle tower room at Borthwick Castle in Scotland, sailed on the Seine in Paris, walked the beaches of Normandy, eaten in numerous French cafes, ridden a camel in Petra, Jordan, sunbathed on Waikiki, shopped the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, and spent the night in an old Communist hotel in Bulgaria.
She adores all baked goodies; brownies, éclairs, donuts, tarts, and pie, and makes a lot of chocolate chip cookies while revising.
Kimberley is, of course, hard at work on her next novel(s).
Welcome to Hartland Cove! Home of one of the longest covered bridges (also known as the kissing bridge), the Strickland family fry truck, lighthouses, whale tours, a population of 999, childhood friends, tourists by the droves and the mafia. Well kind of the mafia. Anna's best friend Elise has just called to inform her that her and her fiancee are on the run from his family, who so happen to be the Irish Mafia. Well what better place to lay low than a town full of tourists and out of the way, so welcome two new people to this bustling small town.
This is the second book published by this author which is set in the quaint little town. This book has plenty of mystery, humor, dreams, the boy next door moments, coming of age moments and moments where Anna puts herself into some interesting (embarrassing) situations.
Anna was a fun character, a little naive at some points, healing in some points of the story, striving to reach her dreams in other moments and trying to wrestle with her heart and discover her true feelings. Now if she can juggle all of that, her father's health, her best friend's drama and safety as well as trying to figure out how to protect that best friend Elise, what she should do with the boy next door and also what she should do with the new heartthrob in town who is quiet possibly catching Anna's eye.
There's quite a bit packed into this one and it had me turning the pages trying to discover who the bad guys were, who the good guys in hiding were and who would catch Anna's heart in the process. I won't go into the romance aspect because then I would spoil who she chooses and that would ruin the fun of it all. Can you figure it all out before Anna's time runs out for protecting those she loves? Can she choose the man of her dreams before it's too late and she's pushed him away? Will the secrets that she discovers about her past and future undo her?
This was a fun read. If you've visited Hartland Cove in previous books then I suggest you return and meet another fun group of characters from there. If you haven't visited yet, I recommend grabbing any (or all) of the three books in this series, sit back and enjoy all the fun! And yes, lots of sweet and swoony moments too!
I really enjoyed the Canadian setting with this story, especially as it's also set out in the country. I love the small town, simple feel. The marine setting, with the whales and dolphins is very fresh and invigorating.
I loved the quirky characters and the extreme polar opposites that they tended to be. Anna and her friendship with the outlandish Elise is a perfect example of the eccentric relationships. That girl (Elise) left my head spinning at times. There are some new folks in town who are sort of mysterious, but don't worry--these "extra" characters that show up aren't really out of place, since the summer season does bring tourists. I have to add that I loved the bond that Anna and her dad share.
As for the romance, I was a little confused at times and was definitely kept guessing where things would go. First, we have Chad, Anna's childhood neighbor. Although the two haven't talked for years, there is a spark there (at least on his part), but Anna has another interest--a mystery new man, and she has to make up her mind. The romance was not at all what I was expecting it to be and it really caught me off guard, especially when it got a little awkward there for a minute.
What really drew me into the story was the action. Elise and her fiance are running from his mafia family and decide to hide out in this small town under pseudo names. While the suspense and action are engaging, it's also slightly over the top...but fun...and exciting. For me, this isn't a "sitting on the edge of my seat" kind of story, but it's very entertaining and left me anticipating the outcome, especially with all that was going on, which really is a lot.

Set in the small ocean town in Canada, Anna, a tour guide on whale watching boat finds love when she least expects it. I loved Anna’s character. Although she had some stressful situations she was facing, the book was positive and not overly dramatic. I loved the dolphin part, it totally made me want to take a marine life tour. And her next door neighbor Chad was such a sweetie. What I love about Kimberley Montpetit’s books is that they are not predictable. You never know where the story will take you! With the twists and turns, I kept wondering what would happen next. But no spoilers here, you just have to read it to to find out. Best of all the book had a happy ending. Such a sweet story and a great book to escape in!
Favourite line from the book: "Don’t sell yourself short, Anna. Because when you take eye candy home, it often turns out to be just a hollow shell like a chocolate Easter bunny.”
I really liked this book. It kept me guessing all the way through who she would end up with and who "Denny" actually was. It kept my attention and kept me reading; I was intrigued by the mystery. Well done!
I'm a little bit mixed on this one. I thought it had a good start, a good premise, but as I read more and more of it, I felt like there was way too much going on.
There's Anna, she's doing her best to get by and make enough money to go back to school and get her PhD. I loved that she works on a whale watching tour to do this, we spent our family vacation in areas where there are a lot of whale watching tours and it just seemed fun to me. I loved the way she knew all kinds of things about the animals, since that's what she wanted to get her PhD in.
Things were a little strange with a love interest for her in this one. At the beginning, she meets a man she finds attractive and he seems to kind of like her...but it really goes nowhere. Then there's the boy next door and he was more like a brother to her...but everyone but her has known how much he liked her. I don't know, this whole part was as confusing to me as it was to her.
Then there was her friend, Elise. This part was really confusing. It seemed as though Elise would tell her one thing and then do something completely different. This part actually seemed like it had some huge continuity errors that didn't get caught by early readers. I would have liked to have seen Elise get her own story, not jump into Anna's this way. I don't know.
I did like the way it ended. It made me laugh just a little bit to see how much different things were than Elise or Anna had thought they were. That part was funny!
All in all, this one was okay for me. I wouldn't go out of my way to read it again though.
Anna Hamilton has her heart set on a career in marine biology. After her father receives devastating news she moves home to Heartland Cove to work. While home Anna has a whirl-wind summer helping her friend, Elise, and her fiancé run from the Mafia. On top of it all her life-long friend, Chad, enters her life once again. Will Anna discover love while trying to stay alive?
Once I started this book I could not put it down. When I thought I had it all figured out the plot would twist. I really enjoyed Anna. She has a passion for life while trying to be a loving support to her father. Her personality is a breath of fresh air and I think I could by her friend. Chad is the gangly neighbor boy who grew up to be a man. He is kind, loving, and forgiving. Not to mention handsome.
I really like the adventure and mystery that the story provides. I just wanted to know what happened next, A cute clean romance set in a small town you’re sure to enjoy.
Both mystery and romance kept me turning the pages of The Mafia's Secret. I loved the swoon-worthy love interest and enjoyed the number of twists I didn't see coming. I also loved the sea-side setting in the small town. I want to move down there, walk along the pier, take the boat tour, and sit down to a plate of fresh lobster. This is the first book I've read by Kimberley Montpeit, but it definitely won't be the last.
I found it somewhat unique that Ms. Montpetit chose not to divulge the identity of the book’s hero until close to the end of the story. Commonly, authors identify the name of the protagonists in the “About This Book” synoptic discussion section of the book. Instead, as the story progressed it appeared that Michael Madden might fill that role; however, the lifetime best friend, Chad Garrett, was not identified as the hero until the final pages of the novel. By not defining the protagonists early on and leaving his clear identity until the end, I felt robbed of much of my enjoyment in reading this book.
I was hugely disappointed with the number of significant editorial errors. I wonder if a real editor even read the book before publication. A competent editor would not have allowed Michael to say, “I’ve always dreamed of living on an idyllic island off the coast of Oregon.” There are no habitable islands off the Oregon Coast, let alone idyllic islands. Likewise, a competent editor would not have allowed Anna to say, “I’d like to do research … studying polar bears in Antarctica.” I learned in elementary school that there are no polar bears Antarctica. They only inhabit the Arctic. Another series of blunders occurred when the author repeatedly refers to a boat’s propeller as a motor, i.e., “stay away from the motor’s sharp blades.” Typos, grammar errors, punctuation errors, improper sentence construction, and similar problems abound in this offering, especially in the final chapters of the book.
I found it difficult to connect with the characters and had a difficult time relating to the story. At times I was bored with the story but kept reading anyway. I would like to know what happened to the Kimberly Montpetit that wrote the previous book in the series, The Executive’s Secret. I awarded her five-stars. That author seems not to be the author who wrote this novel.
The Mafia’s Secret: A Secret Billionaire Romance Book 3 is by Kimberley Montpetit. Once more, Kimberley takes us back to Heartland Cove, Canada. This sleepy little tourist town has awakened for the season. All the businesses are up and running at full throttle cashing in on the tourist trade. Billionaire Michael Madden has come to Heartland Cove to talk to Judge Hamilton to get his help to get out of the family business. He wants no one to know about it; but he literally runs into Judge Hamilton’s daughter. Anna had to thank her clumsiness for running into such a handsome man. She just hoped he would take her hint and join one of the cruises she worked on for Captain Newell. She was definitely attracted to him. However, she put him out of her mind to get to work. She had worked for Captain Newell for several summers and practically ran the cruise from selling tickets to pointing out facts about the whales and dolphins they saw. It gave her a chance to study the animals closely which would help when she finally got to go to school for her PHD. Then, she could finally get some work with marine animals. It looks like the summer will be the same as usual. Anna gets a phone call from her friend Elise. Elise is engaged but Denny’s family doesn’t want him to get married to her. They are trying to break them up. Elise and Denny decide to run away and hide to figure something out. They chose Heartland Cove as a safe place. Anna gets Elise a job with the Newell family as a nanny to their daughter. Can Elise do the job and can she stay out of sight? She doesn’t tell Anna where Denny is to avoid breaking his disguise. Can Anna keep Elise safe and keep her from giving away her presence? Who is Denny and where is he?
This is a nice story of Anna Hamilton's simple but boring life gets turned upside down when devastating news is given by her father that he has terminal Cancer. Still dealing with the loss of her mother really young this news is too much for Anna.
Bring in the mysterious hot looking business man Michael Madden, who has turned up in lazy Heartland Cove.
It does not end there, here best friend Elise calls to say she's coming to Heartland Cove to lay low with her fiance, who happens to be part of the O'Rourke Mafia family and wants out of the family business.
Just when you think that's not enough for her her childhood best Friend Chad Garret drops into the picture, and my gosh is he HOT. They start to get to know each other and it's obvious he has strong feelings for Anna. Anna is left confused as to who she wants Chad or Michael.
So many secrets so many lives in turmoil and things just have to get dangerous.
The greatest thing in this was Anna's and her father's close relationship.
For me the book was a bit slow. But I still enjoyed it.
This book caught my attention from the very beginning, and then kept me guessing. I would think I’d figured something out, just to read something that made me think, “Nope, I guess not.” Then the next minute I’d be thinking that maybe I was right…or not…until I wasn’t sure what to think. And along with the twists and turns came great romance!
I really enjoyed the characters! Anna is so sweet and genuine. I loved her! Michael and Chad are both great guys, but after meeting them, I knew who I wanted Anna to end up with. And she did! Yay!! :) Everything worked out so well, and the ending was perfect!
Once again, Kimberley Montpetit has written a book that I loved. And I’m already looking forward to the next one!
This was an intriguing, suspenseful and swoon worthy book. I loved the books setting and I found myself intrigued with the small town and wanting to visit. I also liked the uniqueness of the characters. At the very beginning Anna runs into Micheal and you find yourself hoping that a connection will form between Anna and this handsome man. You meet Anna's best friend Elise who is quite eccentric and wonder how they are so close. I also loved the friendship Anna had with her neighbor Chad. All these people are important in this book and what happens towards the end of the book is quite surprising. This book and storyline are packed with a bit of everything and definitely kept you guessing throughout the book and all the way to the end. It was another good one by Kimberley.
This was a cute story involving a young woman (Anna), who knows a lot about marine life, her crazy, fun loving, rich friend who's on the run from the mafia, the crazy friend's fiance whose family belongs to the Mafia and her life long friend Chad, who lives next door and is possibly in love with her. I loved the characters and how they interact. Things are kind of confusing at times as you mostly see things from Anna's point of view and she is totally clueless. Something is going on and she just can't quite figure it out, but in the end, it all comes to light and Chad comes in to save the girl. It was a fun quick read with lots of feels.
Elise is engaged to Denny, whose father is in the Irish Mafia. The family has plans for his future. His plans are different. So Elise gets Anna to find her a job. Anna spots Michael and gets a huge crush on him. That is kind of stupid considering that she has Chad. That she's always had Chad. Any more would create a spoiler. Montpetit is an excellent writer,,and this is one of her best books. It kept me guessing all the way through. Recommended for all readers of clean romance.
EAnna is in a crossroad. She needs to finish her PhD but has not money and doesn't want for her father to help her. And suddenly she involved in a mystery, with her friend running away from the mafia, because she wants to marry her fiancé. There is a lot of new people in Harland Cove and Anna meets a hsndsome man, Michael and she feeos an attraction. But then Chad, her best friend and all time neighbour help her in an emotional.moment and she feels something different. Can Anna help her friend and find love for herself in the man next door? The audiobook is great
Anna Hamilton’s college roommate and her fiancé feel they have to go into hiding because he wants to leave the family business. Anna helps her find a temporary job, and she thinks she has a crush on the newest bachelor in town, Michael Madden. Her best friend and next door neighbor, Chad Garrett has a crush on Anna, and when he tells her, she reacts badly causing tension between them. This book has an interesting story line, and several areas of interest in personal relationships. I definitely recommend reading it.
This was such a fun book! I grew up in a tiny town like the setting of this book. Can't say I loved it though and I haven't been back in almost 14 years haha. I loved that Anna was a small town girl. She loved people and being there for everyone. She was willing to help her best friend out even if it was to hide her from the mob. This story have so many emotional high and lows. It was a great read! I love all the books in this series so far.
Anna is home from college and it looks like it will be a while before she can continue graduate school. Good thing her hometown is full of things to distract her -- like the gorgeous Michael that has secret business with her father. Or the Hollywood scouts checking out the area. And why is her childhood friend and neighbor suddenly so hunky? One thing is for sure, this will be a summer to remember.
What a fun book! I really enjoyed The Mafia's Secret. It kept me guessing and I'll admit I actually jumped ahead at one point because I couldn't take it anymore and had to know. LOL. It was a lot of fun to read and I am so happy I finally found the time to read it. If you enjoy fun clean romances, you will love this book.
This story has a lot of twist and turns, but was really great. Anna has come home to earn the money she needs for her PhD in Marine Biology. Her best friend Anna has been telling her about her boyfriend Denny and now they both are coming there. But while this is going she finds out her dad has cancer. And her best friend Chad has turned into a very handsome man.
I have listened to this on Youtube, which I am grateful for, to be honest. I must admit it was not at all what I expected. This reads more like a thriller-mystery-comedy than a typical romance. It's all twists and turns among the sweet and emotional parts. I must say this is usually very much my type of book, but this one didn't 100% jive with me. It was okay, but not my favorite honestly.
Very good book enjoyed it from the first page till the last one, it has a small town feel and Mafia elements which together make the story well worth reading.I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
I liked this romance about realizing that the boy next door turned into more than a friend. The storyline ,setting and characters were intriguing. I recommend this book for those that enjoy clean romance.
This was a good book & well written. Anna & Chad were a great couple & made the come alive so you had to read to the end. It had love & suspence in it. An unexpected twist at the end.
Good read. She wants to finish her degree as marine biologist, and is working on boarts that do whale tours. Bums into a stranger with a folder that falls to the ground with her family name one it. Her best friend wants to get married to someone hiding from the Mafia.
This story shows the ups and downs of life and how things aren’t always perfect. Throw in new identities, old friends, secrets, action, suspense, instant love and you have one amazing whirlwind for a happily ever after. Melie Williams does a great job narrating this audiobook.
Anna was looking for love and she's had it in front of her since she was young Her best friend Chad had always had strong feelings for her but never told her until she came back home from school Anna didn't see the signs but had feelings for Chad
I was really excited for this book because I adore romantic suspense and the mafia aspect sounded awesome. But, it was a bit slow moving and I really do not like love triangles. I’m also not sure how it fits into the secret billionaire series line. It was cool to be back in Heartland Cove though.
