I really like the other books in this series, but I can't get over dinosaurs being the bad guys here and humans "triumphing" over them. It's too close to reality with species dying out by the minute in our age of the Anthropocene. It's bad enough we kill animals with our modern lifestyle in the real world, I don't need this to be pictured (literally) as something positive in a book aimed at toddlers.

Plus: Who in their right minds makes dinosaurs into the bad guys (including the herbivores by the way, sure, there's always some T-Rex bashing going around, but why is everyone's favorite snuggle dino the triceratops the baddie here?)? Seriously, my inner dinosaur nerd was hurt.

I think I'll sell this again, my three year old is still too small to discuss this heavy subject with (usually I like reading controversial books with my kids to discuss them, I don't hold with book banning), so I think I'll let it go.

One would think that any story that included underpants and dinosaurs would be a winner with kids, especially boys. For the kids at my story time, this just wasn't so. The book begins:

Dinosaurs were all wiped out,
A long way back in history,
No one knows quite how or why,
This book solves the mystery...

In this follow-up to the award-winning Aliens Love Underpants, Claire Freedman attempted to write another fun underpants story, but the story simply felt forced. The rhymes often did not flow, not rolling off the tongue, and often I stumbled on the long lines. Worse yet, even though the story line is supposed to be silly, it just didn't make sense. Although there is an obvious beginning and end, the middle muddled through with lots of underpants but no story line.

This could have been so much better. The illustrations were vibrant and fun, but the greatest illustrations cannot save a story with a loose plot. Most of the laughs generated by this book were from the illustrations which makes this story fun to look at but a hard read. And a hard sell.

My recommendation is stick with the original Aliens Love Underpants and find another fun Dinosaurs story. Hopefully one with a real story that matches the fun illustrations.

Cavemen invent underpants. Dinosaurs love them so much, they fight with each other over them to extinction. Told in rhyme.

I don't mind the anachronistic premise. I do think it's odd that cavemen explicitely invent furry underwear, but then everybody has modern-style briefs. But mostly, it bothered me that there were no cavewomen. I don't expect every book to pass the Bechdel test, especially if there are only a few characters, but it was very odd that there was a large community of cave men and boys and no females anywhere.

I can see kids loving this because it combines dinosaurs and underwear--two amazing things. But it's a little grim that ALL THE DINOSAURS DIED because they got in an epic fight over them AND that the cavemen were HAPPY to see them all DEAD.

Difficult to pronounce those dinosaur names 🙃 but we learnt that they shouldn't fight over something that they don't really need 🩳

I read Monsters Love Underpants some time ago, and I adored that book. And guess what I found in my library yesterday? Yes, I found Dinosaurs Love Underpants. I was kind of expecting it to be the same kind of story as the Monsters, but it was quite different.

In this story we find out how the dinosaurs got extinct. Oh, you thought that was because of a meteorite, well believe me, after this book, you might reconsider. ;) It was a really funny book about cavemen, about dinosaurs, about fights on underwear (Yes, believe me, underwear is highly wanted!) and while the sentences didn't really rhyme, they still had a nice rhythm to them that made them easy and also very fun to read.

I really liked how we started in the present and travelled back in time to the past.

The illustrations are nice, colourful and fun to look at. I really loved all those underwear, though I do wonder where they got the fabric from. The animal prints are easy, but how did they get white/blue underwear? Or polka-dotted ones? The mystery deepens. ;)

Would I recommend this book? Yes, I am sure kids will love it, and parents will just be laughing just as hard at all the underpants antics happening.

I am hoping that I will find the other books one day, as I would love to see more underwear and see which critters/creatures get the spotlight next.

Dinosaurs Love Underpants by Claire Freedom delivers what you would imagine it would from the title, it is a fun, short story about just what happens when Dinosaurs discover underpants. I first came across this book when working in the Early Years Foundation Stage. It is a beautifully illustrated courtesy of award winning illustrator Ben Cort, the illustrations work effortlessly to bring the story to life. This has to be one of the most popular stories I have read to children, they were always asking to hear it again, and again. The text contains short rhyming patterns, which makes it an excellent choice when developing rhyming skills in young children. I would recommend this book for the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. Expect lots of laughter and giggles when reading this story!

I chose this book when I was in Reception during book week because I thought it would really appeal to the boys, which it did. They thought it was hilarious!

This book has lovely vibrant illustrations which really match the text. It is the story of how the dinosaurs became extinct, when the caveman decided to start wearing underpants the mean T-Rex wanted a pair too. Soon all the dinosaurs were fighting over their pants - in fact the fighting got so bad that the dinosaurs were all wiped out.

The book uses short rhyming text which is read at a quick pace. It is a really snappy read.

I used this book with Reception but Nursery children would really like it too because it is visually stimulating.

It could also be used when introducing poetry to KS1 children to explain the use of rhyme in poems.

Me and C read this today, a funny story with some great illustrations {10 minutes spent deciding which pants belonged to which family member} A lovely funny read, great for younger kids.

Why are dinosaurs extinct? Turns out it's because they all killed each other over underpants!

With this silly premise, a colorful and active tale unfolds using rhyme and rhythm to carry kids along for the ride. The aim is simple: make underpants cool. There's no connection made between wearing underwear and using the potty, and that's okay. The focus on underwear is the whole point.

There are some things about this book that are a miss. Many of the writing choices are odd—and I'm not talking about the fossil record stuff or the lack of female cavemen. For example, why include an explanation of why cavemen started wearing underwear ("to stop them from looking crude")? It's confusing.

Some reviewers are horrified by the dino-on-dino violence and the depiction of two dead dinosaurs in the final pages. This doesn't bother me, personally, but for some it may be a deal breaker. The dino action is what makes it fun for kids, and there's nothing gruesome. The illustrations are colorful and engaging, and the spin on underwear as cool and somehow associated with fearsome, warring dinosaurs is unexpectedly successful.

If a kid ever asks how did the dinosaurs disappear, give them this book and see what they think! What a fun twist on the idea of figuring out what wiped out the dinosaurs. Never would I think it was because they loved wearing human underwear. The title alone would make anyone want to pick this book up and see what it is about. The illustrations on the cover make you so curious as to how something like dinosaurs and underwear could correlate. I loved how there was a display of different underwear as you opened the book. It really sets the tone for how silly and fun this story is going to be.

Another fun addition to this book is the rhyming scheme it has going for itself. The art style is original and colorful. It feels as though I can see the paint strokes and splotches. The colors and drawings are very eye-catching and will have you looking around the pages at the details. The illustrations have fun with the colorful dinosaurs and the beautiful green shrubbery and trees. Kids will have fun with seeing the different ways dinosaurs try putting on tiny pairs of underpants. I know dinosaurs are a hot topic for young kids, so I would think grades K-3 would enjoy this story the most. I enjoy that this story isn't supposed to have a special message to convey to kids, but just providing a fun spin on the story that answers the question: What happened to the dinosaurs?

Have you ever wondered what wiped out all the dinosaurs way back in history?

Well, the Cavemen, embarrassed by their nudity, dreamed up underpants. But when Tyrannosaurus-Rex saw their underpants, he wanted them. Soon all the dinosaurs were undies crazy, snatching underpants whenever they could. Soon the Cavemen were running low on underpants and the dinosaurs began fighting each other for the remaining undies.

What do you think happened?

Delightfully silly, this rhyming tale is guaranteed to bring about giggle-fits in even the staunchest of dinosaur fans. Colorfully illustrated [with LOTS of underpants], the story takes a truth . . . dinosaurs are extinct . . . and creates a hilarious explanation for their demise. It’s not science, it’s not accurate, but it is lots of fun. And, dinosaur fans or not, young readers are sure to find a few giggles within the telling of this tale that is certain to become a read-it-again favorite.

Such a humorous and fun spin on the dinosaurs and how they were wiped out long ago. The story began telling of cavemen and their nakedness. Someone came up with underpants for them! The largest of them all, the T-Rex, wasn't chasing the cavemen to eat them, he just wanted their underwear. He ripped the furry briefs when he couldn't get them past his feet. Triceratops wore them on every horn, but another dinosaur took them. The rest of the dinosaurs quickly tried them on but tore them in a tug-o-war. The fighting over underpants was what took out the dinosaurs! The cavemen were grateful their biggest enemy was no longer a threat, all due to underpants.

Such a funny book, from rhyming to the colorful pictures. Claire Freedman wrote a cute book for little children, I can't wait to read this to my students.

I often find issues with books that have dialectal rhymes (saw/more) when there isn't a pronunciation guide or accompanying audio, which halts me immediately and makes it hard to read. (And when you think about it, far more English dialects -- even in the original market -- are not going to rhyme these two words together; it's very specific to particular handfuls of English dialects, meaning it should've had an accompanying audio.) You'll also get tripped up on at least one dinosaur name, which makes the reading weird.

Also, while it's silly and has cute illustrations? The story is rubbish and doesn't work at all. There could've been far more opportunities to make it better, something more engaging and interesting. (And if you have a pedantic child who knows their science/history? They may not be pleased with dinosaurs and early man at the same time.)

I think I'm a bit of a killjoy. My daughter likes this book but I'm not that keen. I know it's a kids book but Obvs cavemen and dinos didn't exist at the same time. Half the dinos in the book didn't exist at the same time. Cavemen are shamed by nudity. Dinos are presented as stupid, selfish creatures. All of these things are factually wrong. Then I'll send my young daughter to school where they can teach her the absolute opposite of this....

Then they all kill each other. Nice.

The book says it solves the 'Mystery' of why dinos were all wiped out, but it's not a mystery. Modern science knows why they died out.....

i read 5 books last night the little folks crowd ... what i find odd about KU ...lots of books are great ...they use of most of the screen on the kindle ...but like the book it is so tiny ...which makes the illustrations and text even tiny-er ... so it is pretty hard to read. these illustrations are just to great ... i mean to think of folks in their undies ... i mean every one will giggle. that is just human nature. silly. giggles. and that is okay ... being silly is fun. great read. only wish it was larger both in the illustration and text department here on KU.

What's not funny about underwear to most kids. Underwear just always sends kids into fits of giggles so I had a lot of hope for this book. I am so glad I wasn't sadly disappointed. Cassie really enjoyed this book and was laughing at the silly antics on each page. She also got a huge kick out of the looks of the underwear. I loved the take on the dinosaurs disappearing and that it was the underwear's fault. The illustrations in this book are bright and colorful and really grab the attention of all kids. I think all kids will enjoy this book for sure whether they like dinosaurs or not.

This is a cute idea, but the text ruined it for me. It was awkward to read aloud, and the attempts at rhymes are inconsistent. You start to expect a rhyme, or a line of text you can almost chant but then the words don't line up or end on an odd note. Younger children (preschool) didn't really understand some concepts of the book, it might work better if they have a few years of wearing underpants under their belts to really get it.

This book is a story about how dinosaurs became extinct. The story says the dinosaur became extinct because they stole the caveman's underwear which led to them fighting each other over the underwear which led them to become extinct.

This book is hilarious! I really liked the story and the pictures. I think children would really enjoy this book and it may make little ones excited about wearing underwear.

Occasionally I wonder how people come up with this stuff. Claire Freedman's "Dinosaurs Love Underpants" gets creativity and comedy points. There definitely was laughter when I read this story to my kids. Dinosaurs and cavemen interact in this one and different dinosaurs react to their own underwear. Children can learn the names of different dinosaurs (if I can pronounce them correctly) while giggling right along.

Genre: Children's Picture Book - Fiction
Ages: PreK-2

This is definitely a book that will appeal to children - and probably only to children. Adults may have a hard time suspending their disbelief long enough to enjoy dinosaurs wiping each other out in a war over caveman underpants. But the illustrations were cute and the book introduces several different dinosaurs. And it rhymes so students should enjoy reading it.
