The saga of Cal Harper and the crew of the Star Splinter continues...
Author's note - This version of Shattered Moon has now been merged with the novella Callacean to make an even longer, more epic adventure!
After eight desperate months of searching, Cal Harper and his crew still haven't discovered Kaia’s whereabouts. Taken by pirates during the rescue of Federation survivors, her fate remains uncertain. But so too is the fate of humanity itself…
With the destruction of Earth, the Insidions have struck a devastating blow only to sink back into the shadows to let the poison spread. Thousands of colonies have been forced into self-sufficiency, and the loss of interstellar communications is making the situation infinitely worse.
Riding on the building chaos, the pirates are proving increasingly organized. So much so that Cal fears a leader may have arisen—one powerful enough to unite the disparate clans. But Cal isn’t about to give up his search, not by a long shot, and his crew are sticking with him every step of the way.
But trouble is brewing in ways few could have predicted, and fortunately or not, Cal and his friends have a talent for finding the worst of it.
Born in 1976, I grew up on the south coast of England and enjoyed an active childhood involving swing ropes, tree houses and homemade go-carts. In my teens the interests became scuba diving, rock climbing and martial arts. At the end of my teens a spanner was thrown in the works in the form of a car crash in which I managed to break my neck (Yes, it kinda hurt). Deciding that University was too dangerous for a young man in a wheelchair, I decided to travel the world for a decade or so. I took in some of Africa, Brazil, Cambodia, Australia, lived in New York and San Diego for a bit, basically had a fun time of it. But no matter where I went I always looked forward to heading back home to England. Despite the weather, it’s a rather nice place to live.
I guess I have Roald Dahl to thank for sparking my interest in books and writing. I loved his books as a boy and I remember seeing a documentary that showed footage of Mr Dahl sitting in a little shed in his garden sharpening pencils and scribbling away. The idea of it struck me as a good life and a couple of decades later the notion finally took hold. I don’t have a shed, but I do have a great library where I live in the South West of England. I visit it most days with my trusty little apple laptop and tap away.
Soon after Roald Dahl, it was Star Wars that began to influence my imagination — the combination of science fiction and fantasy really floated my boat, so to speak. I spent a few years dabbling with stories, but the big inspirational kick up the butt came when I first viewed the wonderful, but tragically short lived TV show, Firefly created by that force of nature Mr Joss Whedon. His balance of light hearted humour, sometimes dark, emotional drama and kick ass action really hit home and the idea for my first book ‘Star Splinter’ began to take shape. Star Splinter is the first in the Fractured Space series involving a group of characters who already seem to be doing the story telling for me! The prequel novella titled ‘Harper’s Ten’ is now also out and more are on the way!
I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.
Shattered Moon, Book three in the Fractured Space series (not including the prequel, Harper's Ten), is what I've been waiting for since Star Splinter. Coming in over 350 pages - this isn't a quick read, and there are times where I was thinking this tale could have been shaved a bit, but overall it is an enjoyable adventure. Further reading may be considered spoiling. So, this is your warning. Click away from these words.
Okay, still here? The entire team. Yes. I said it. But, if you've read the previous works, then you knew Kaia would be back. But boy, Creesey is not a nice author. There is pain. There is carnage. The team gets banged-up harshly.
Kaia is on Hoth. Not THE Hoth, but something reminiscent for sure. The pirates are all gathered and if Cal and crew have any shot of getting Kaia back - they must voluntarily slip into the belly of the beast. The pirates are ruthless and heavily armed....and that is only part of the problem. I won't spoil the particular results. Aside from sections running a bit too long for my personal taste, this is a great installment in the series.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, so I was excited to delve into this one. Unfortunately, either I didn't notice this problem in the first book or the first book didn't have this problem. Editing is your friend! Shattered Moon needed a much better editing job. Seemingly. Everything was seemingly. I got so annoyed with how everything "seemed" that I started mentally crossing all variations of that word off every time I came across it (it was a lot, a lot, a lot) and that exercise made the book much more enjoyable. There were other problems in the same vein. BUT the plot was great. The dialogue is great. It's a fun, enjoyable read. I will definitely read more in the series. I'll hope for a more polished product next time! Trimming the sloppy verbiage would've taken this book from ok to outstanding.
This book and series is Fantastic! I have stayed up way too late reading for the last two nights. It is just to good to put down. Mr. Cressey has created a great universe to immerse yourself into. Cal and his friends are wonderful reading. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SERIES!
This writer has a sadistic streak. The bad guys get the better of the good guys way to often, and the suffering of our favorite characters is also over the top. I listened to the audio-book. It was not until the 14:58 minute mark, with 22 minutes remaining was there any relief, and great news/events for the good guys. Not my type of story.
There was an equal balance of quite character moments and nail biting danger in this second installment of the series. The continued world building was interesting with cool new planets and more space pirates. I’m really looking forward to the next book that I hope will give us more insight on aliens causing all the trouble.
This book did exactly what I wanted it to do. It gave me more insight to the fantastic set of characters, furthered the story, and left me still questioning Deckers history. Can’t wait for number 4!
Enjoying the series so far. Cressey has created an interesting universe with rich characters. Looking forward to reading the next installment/adventure for the Star Splinter crew. I believe other readers will thoroughly enjoy this book and series.
This book is is extremely well thought out and written. Our characters get much more depth as they evolve. There is a little bit of Han Solo in Cal. So far, I’d say these books would actually make a pretty damn good movie.
Fast-paced, interesting story with great characters
I love the characters who are so interesting and complex and funny. The story is fast paced and unpredictable. I can't wait to read the next one in the series.
Looking forward to reading more about your Fractured Space. The characters and action kept me reading as fast as I could to get to the next chapter. Waiting for the next installment. Don't make me wait too long.
