This collection of poems by Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu is a trip to the Anshi rebellion period of Tang dynasty. Du's poetry is known to be called "poetic history" because he offers a detailed and vivid account of his period. His prose describes everything in such lucid details that you feel you are walking along with him on his journey. The scope of his poetry is exhaustive. He describes the various cities from Chang An,  Chengdu, LuoYang to various small towns he resided in painstaking details from poverty conditions to individual citizen lives during the rebellion. He describes the aftermath of places where war passes. His poems cover the mental states of wives waiting for soldiers in the frontline as well as scenes seen by returning soldiers. He also describes the lives of officials, poets, painters that were friends to even their poems and paintings. Also covered are experiences with friends who offered him refuge while escaping from war. Some poems just offer beautiful sceneries he saw on his journey.

Du provides such a complete details of his time that his poetry is basically a history of his period. You would enjoy the trips he takes you on while he serves as your guide
