This is the continuation of Eric and Zane's story, another stepping stone to their HEA. Eric is once again the narrator, and he's as in love with Zane as ever. The two are living the good life: planning their wedding and having explosive sex.

But a trip to their home town and Zane needing to work with his ex could change all that. Eric is jealous, and he's not wrong to be worried, at least about the ex's intentions (I wanted to strangle Dean; what a douchecanoe!)

Returning home makes Eric feel like the geeky, insecure kid he once was. He knows what he and Zane have is real, but he can't help but doubt just a little.

I'm always reluctant to read established couple stories if new conflicts are introduced. I don't like authors messing with their characters' HEA! But Lane Hayes doesn't write heavy angst and fuckery, so I trusted her to make it right. And she did.

While the men do have to deal with Eric's jealousy and have a few tense moments, Leaning Into Always is a sweet, sexy story that shows us how strong Eric and Zane's relationship really is. They are willing to communicate, compromise, and work through issues.

They'll be just fine. Always.
The spine-tingling connection was laced with familiar sensuality but underneath it was the sentiment of a million silly love songs and the greatest lines from my favorite poems. It was the promise of things we couldn't see but knew were there and would be if we trusted each other and leaned into always.

Leaning Into Always is part two of Eric's and Zane's story we first met them in Leaning Into Love. At the beginning of this story, everything is smooth sailing. Their businesses are flourishing, and their relationship is as strong as ever. They decide on a trip back home to visit each other's parent's, and while there Zane will take care of some business. Unfortunately, this deal will bring him close to his ex, whom Eric hates. Not only because it's Zane's ex but because he brings back to a time that Eric would rather forget.

Some highlights:

-Eric's inner monologue. It was funny, heartbreaking, and sweet.

-Zane & Eric. These guys are too fucken adorable together and sexy as all hell!

-Relationship growth. These guys are in it for the long haul, and it shows in the love and respect they have towards each other. When issues arose, they were mature, talked and listened to what each had to say.

All in all, I just loved this novella. Sequels to established couples are tricky. I got upset when a couple's HEA is messed with, but I think Lane Hayes did a great job here. Going into Leaning Into Always I didn't think it possible to love Eric and Zane more than I already did, but I do. 5 Stars!

I wanted more and more is what I got. Another successful novella read for me from Lane Hayes.

Here we get more of Eric and Zane. They are planning their wedding and enjoying being in love. But things get rocky when they guys are heading back to their home town to visit their parents and when Eric finds out Zane will be working with a ex on a job. It's not long before they are in town when the ex, Dean shows up.

Being back in the place he grew up has some old insecurities bubbling back up to the surface for Eric. Especially when Dean is around. It makes Eric feel like the insecure geek he once was. He's also feeling a lot of jealously. Especially when Dean looks a little bit longing at Zane or touches him constantly and letting that touch linger just a bit longer then necessary.

Eric's insecurities and jealousy follows them home. He's sure that Dean wants Zane and Zane is in denial and is sure that it is all in Eric's head. It doesn't help Eric's insecurities that Dean keeps popping up everywhere. Like in their home as well. Ugh!

Dean was a complete A-hole and I desperately wanted him to fall of the boat. Mean? Yes. But it's not like I said I wanted him to fall off and drown. Just fall off and let the boat keep going. LOL

Eric's jealousy rocks their relationship boat and our laid back Zane loses his temper a couple times and it was surprising seeing him so mad. It was uncomfortable for Eric. I could understand both sides and felt bad for both guys. But eventually things get back on steady ground.

I really adore these two together. I love how sweet they are and how they take care of one another.

Happy reading dolls!

4 stars – Leaning Into Always is the second novella by Lane Hayes that follows the pairing of Eric Schuster and Zane Richards. Taking place several months after the primary storyline found in Leaning Into Love, this sequel novella introduces a bump in the happily-ever-after (HEA) found in the first story. Perhaps because the romance was established in the first book, this novella left me feeling much more satisfied than the first simply because the story it contains was the right size to be fully developed within the confines of a short novella’s length. In fact, if you are more interested in external conflicts that take place in established relationships more than the development of the relationship itself, reading this novella as a stand-alone entry would likely work for you very well, because the author does a good job refreshing the reader on important information as it’s needed.

Here, Eric and Zane travel back to their Southern California hometown in order to visit their parents and work on closing a deal for Zane to find a new yacht for a man they once worried might cause problems for them because he is Eric’s business partner’s ex-fiancée’s father. As if those facts weren’t stressful enough for Eric, he’s less than excited to return home for another reason: he was a constant object of bullying growing up, so his memories of growing up there aren’t great, and Eric’s and Zane’s circles of friends had nothing in common. So when Zane informs him that an old high-school buddy of his will be helping with the search, Eric’s not thrilled to find out who the buddy is, especially when it turns out to be Dean, the guy who was Zane’s first same-sex experience. To make it worse, it looks to Eric like Dean’s interest is in doing more than just reminiscing about their past.

The fact that I chose to read Leaning Into Always is probably a surprise to my friends who know my romance likes and dislikes, as there are at least three immediate red flags about it that normally make me reluctant to read. First, it’s a novella—I already addressed how this turned out not to be a problem, yay! Second, it’s a direct sequel to a story in which the characters’ HEA has already been established. Although I’ve had pretty good luck reading books that fall into this category, I’m always worried when authors mess around with a HEA because I fear they’ll not reestablish it as well as it originally was or the new conflict will somehow tarnish what they have even after it’s been resolved. Third, depending on how it is developed, the romantic trope involving an ex who wants back into a now-taken character’s life is one of my least favorites.

Happily, none of these things turned out to be problems for me in this case, likely because the realistic level of drama found in Lane Hayes’s stories generally make them the sort and style that I like to read. In fact, even without the brief epilogue it contains, this novella does a better job, in my opinion, of establishing their HEA than the first novella did because the story here is a better conflict than that of the first story, thereby strengthening their bond in my mind. And it did so without skimping on the heat between the couple—it certainly did not read like a couple who had fallen into a rut sexually.

Put it all together and it’s clear why Leaning Into Always earned a full star higher rating from me than its predecessor. While I read the two novellas back-to-back, I have no reason to believe that the second would be any less enjoyable for someone who chooses not to read them that way. Looking at the pair as a set, though, I think it’s still lacking a bit in romantic development, but the addition of the second novella improves the story as a whole, and certainly makes it one I would recommend.

While I absolutely love some jealousy between established couples, the guy inspiring the jealousy in Eric was so evil, it was a bit too OTT for me.

Eric and Zane are still very happy together. So much so that they’re now engaged. When Zane tells Eric he is meeting up with his ex-boyfriend from high school, Eric is not happy. He tries to not let it bother him, but since Eric still doesn’t quite get what hot surfer Zane is doing with geeky him, he lets his insecurities get the better of him.

From the moment Eric meets said ex, Dean, he’s transported back to his high school days where he was bullied by people like Dean.

It is that feeling that makes Eric offer to accompany Zane on a sail trip to get a new boat for a client of Zane. Especially since Dean is going with them. But that trip is not what Eric thought it would be, with him seasick and Dean trying to seduce his man….

I love storylines like this. Unfortunately I always want the bad guy to be fully exposed and to get what he deserves. While Dean did kind of get what he deserved, I wanted a little more exposure. Zane didn’t know everything Dean had said to Eric. And I just wanted Zane to know everything that went down. I was waiting for that at the end, but that moment never came. So that was a bit of a letdown.

But still, I loved these guys and these books are very addictive.

Leaning Into Always is a short novella about Eric and Zane after they finally get together in Leaning Into Love. This story plays into the trope of "getting jitters before the happily ever after". You know how it is ... when one suddenly feels not confident about the relationship and starts questioning what the lover sees in him/her. Eric always thinks that Zane is the gorgeous, popular guy. While him, Eric Schuster, is the nerd who got bullied back in school. He wonders what Zane sees in him.

This trope will not complete without a 'villain' too. Enter Zane's ex-f*ck buddy who, of course, makes Eric jealous and determines to do everything to make Zane stays on his side. Seriously, it's like watching a rom-com! So yeah, I thought this novella was pretty sweet. And Eric has a kink, who knew?!? *laugh*

It's a good short follow-up before we send our heroes sailing to the sunset for their honeymoon :)

🔥🔥🔥/5 Heat.

Part two of Zane and Eric’s friends to lovers story. I liked this novella but didn’t love it. I think it suffered a little from being part two. This and part one would have worked better as one full length novel. Things would have flowed better and had more impact. But I do like Lane Hayes and I’ll check the next one out soon to see if I’m up for reading the whole series. I see all of the following books are one couple for each book so I might enjoy more.

Leaning Into Always is the second part of Eric and Zane's relationship. They are getting married in about four months and in the midst of all the wedding preparations and the work load of their jobs, they have to navigate around an ex.

In this second installment, Eric deals with inferior feelings, left over from when he was in school, with insecurities and with jealousy. Zane is his usual laid-back self, except from when Eric does risky things. Then he becomes snappy, brooding and really, really cold. I actually liked seeing their first real fight. And of course the make up that followed...

This book is a bit longer than the first one but I still think of it as a short story. It was quick and easy to read. There was not a lot of angst even though it was dealing with jealousy over an ex who unexpectedly re-entered their lives. I was sure Eric and Zane would be ok at the end and I never doubted Zane. I couldn't wait to see when Dean would reveal his true colours, though. I'll just say that he eventually did and it wasn't pretty.

Even though this is part of a series and has the same main couple as the first book, I think it could be read as a standalone. In the beginning we are given all the information we need about the characters and a lot of the things that happened in the first book are mentioned here as well. I didn't think it was nesseccary to read through all that again, but I guess this way the author made certain that the reader wouldn't miss anything in the story.

However, even though you wouldn't be lost if you start from this one, I advise you to read the beginning of their story first so you get to know the characters better and be able to enjoy seeing them again in this one.

Gorgeous catch up with Eric and Zane

3.5*

I loved these two in the short story Lane wrote for the anthology, there's nothing sweeter than friends to lovers romance.

Here we get to catch up with the pair in the lead up to their wedding when Zane's old school friend, and first lover, Dean comes back on the scene.

Eric feels vulnerable because he still can't believe Zane has loved him for years and Dean does his best to play on those worries.

But Zane is true to his love and everything ends with a beautiful epilogue and the two men flying off into the sunset together.

It's not got more stars only because it's short! I wanted more of these two as I did in the anthology. I adore Eric and Zane.

I had read most of this series last year yet somehow failed to log it into GR, or worse yet I didn't rate or review it. Bad reader. In any case I liked it very much at first read and it's exactly what I needed this week, when RL has been less than dreamy.

I'm rating and reviewing this along with Leaning Into Love because really they're just one story split into two novellas, both excellently narrated by Seth Clayton. Eric and Zane are part of a larger group of men, some straight, some bi, who've been friends since college and now they're ready for the next stage of their lives.

Eric and Zane hail from the same hometown but prior to college, travelled in different circles: Eric was a geek and a champion debater, while Zane was/is the quintessential California surfer dude. Now they're 30, and one of their group is getting married, these two seemingly different guys fall into easy, angst free love. I like that the only bumps are Eric's occasional thoughts of "what does Zane see in me?", but he doesn't dwell on them. I like how uncomplicated Zane's feelings for Eric are, how he doesn't question it, just goes with it. He's can be sexy, commanding, and sweet in equal measure, but doesn't suffer fools or people who mess with his man.

Overall this is a great introduction to a group of friends who's stories I'll be happy to follow.

I loved Zane and Eric's story in Book 1. Best friends to lovers is usually a win for me, and, coupled with Hayes's storytelling, it was a win in a big way.

So.....to say I had high hopes for the sequel would be accurate. But it fell flatter than Book 1 for me.

Zane and Eric are engaged and living their lives together. Zane is surfing and sailing, while Eric is doing the daily corporate grind. They're still so different, but they just work together. Until an ex fuck buddy of Zane's starts coming around. And around. And around.

I enjoyed seeing Nick, Grant, and Josh. Especially Josh. (I'm dying for his book.)

What kept me from enjoying this book as much as I would've liked was Dean, Zane's ex-whatever. He was the stereotypical contrived villain. He couldn't possibly have been a bigger douchebag, getting his digs in at Eric. And he and Zane had a weird moment on a boat in front of Eric, which was never fully explained.

If it wasn't for the way it felt manufactured and Dean seeming to be a caricature, I enjoyed the rest. I'll stick with 3.5 stars on this one.

Not a favorite, but Hayes remains on autobuy.

First, let me just state that I am very confused by this book. GR states #1.5 and Amazon has it as #2. This makes no sense since I've already read book #2 and this was not it. The author called it part 2 I think. I hate reading out of order but this came out after book 2 and this stuff already happened right? Hopefully people new to the series will read in order.

Ok.

Next, I was not ok with Eric in this book. At all! I cringed at times while reading. His behavior was just ugh! I mostly get it, I do. I also get he was not wrong, but ugh, he really just came across as so totally insecure and to me that reflected poorly on their relationship. I mean, marriage! Questioning why Zane is with you over and over is probably not the best foundation. I do not remember feeling like this about him in their original story.

I kind of wish their story had ended when it did. I don't know if I feel I got anything more out of this story aside from unnecessary drama.

Finally, it wasn't all bad. I love Lane Hayes's writing and usually love everything she writes and this really wasn't an exception. The good parts were great and of course, the lovin' was hot!

Off to the next one although I feel I need a refresher.

I truly enjoyed Zane and Eric when I read their story Leaning Into Love, so of course my interest was piqued when I found out they were getting a follow-up story. Leaning Into Always was a chance to see where they’re at as they are planning to be married, but also to delve into some insecurities that seem to be present on Eric’s side.

Told from Eric’s point of view, we get to take a look into his thoughts when an old friend-with-benefits pops back into Zane’s professional life. For Eric, whose teenage days were not at all ideal—in part due to Zane’s old friend—this spurs self doubts to rise along with jealousy and a bit of territoriality…something Zane doesn’t understand, and that introduces friction between the two of them.

What this story does show though is how deep and strong Eric and Zane’s connection runs, and how much they love each other. There’s a good bit of angst and tension, and Zane’s old friend Dean made me sufficiently annoyed to the point where it actually impacted my rating just a bit.

Leaning Into Always was a good story and a perfect way to revisit Eric and Zane’s relationship without it seeming redundant following the first book. It was a solid 4-star read for me, and I’d definitely recommend it after reading Leaning Into Love. This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content (not to mention a bit of a bedroom surprise from Eric…yep, that’s a little tease…).

This was a very sweet, adorable story to wrap up Eric and Zane's story and get them to their happy ending.

There was some light angst with Zane's ex fuck buddy coming into the picture for a little bit, but it all ends good and the asshole gets deservedly kicked out of Zane's life.

This felt like it was firming up their love for each other, getting Eric to get over his insecurities and be ready to be all in with Zane before they get married.

Dean was a fucking asshole and I wish Zane - or Eric - had punched him, but we can't have everything.

These two are so sweet together. My only wish is that But oh well. This was still good.

Will definitely read more int his series :)

Nice little novella from Lane getting us up-to-date with the now newly married Mr and Mr Richards, Zane and Eric.

I hated Dean, Zane's first male lover, he was a complete douchebag...and to assume that Zane was back in that part of California specifically to resume their long dead little liaison was just arrogance at its worst. The way he treated Eric deserved a short walk off a long plank at the very least IMHO 😠.

Awww! I was a big fan of the first novella, so it was extra-nice to revisit Eric and Zane's life once again. This story takes place shortly after the first one, with Eric and Zane months away from getting married. As they head to the alter, they deal with typical angst such as meeting the parents (or rather, re-meeting as an official couple), planning their wedding, and figuring out how to merge their lives as a couple while still balancing their needs as individuals. This story also added in a extra tangle in the form of an old flame of Zane's which the story didn't need--and I kinda wish the author hadn't included.

As a reader, I totally responded to Eric's insecurities on his home turf. When he questioned how others perceived him, or when he overreacted to certain situations back in his hometown--I got it. My life and personality where I live now (Seattle) is wildly different than my personality as a young girl growing up in Southern CA. Back then, I was a nerd with bad fashion sense, incredibly insecure, and an introvert with only a handful of friends. But in Seattle? I have a wide circle of friends, I'm outgoing, have learned how to pick clothes that accentuate my best features, and I love my life--both personally and professionally. That doesn't stop me, however, from feeling strangely insecure the moment I return to CA and run into a classmate from high school. No matter how many years have passed, it's hard to not let go of the insecurities that bogged us down in our youth.

But if it was just letting a few insecurities weigh him down and make him question his worth next to Zane, I would have wholeheartedly walked down this story line with the author. Instead, the author also added the extra drama of an old flame re-entering Zane's life and despite Eric being 30 years old, he somehow reverted to his teenage years in insecurity and reacted, at times, in a melodramatic and over-the-top way. And without adding spoilers, the old flame was a little bit too caricature-like. And while the author redeems Eric by having him realize he's over-reacting (both to himself and to Zane) it still wasn't needed. This story would have stood on it's own without this story line thrown in.

What I liked about this story is what I liked about the first story--Eric and Zane. I loved seeing their friendship shine through, even in moments of stress. I loved seeing them be gentle (or kinky!) in bed together, I loved seeing them laugh, and I loved witnessing the small moments that make up their day--whether it was Zane telling Eric he loved him in front of his mother or laughing delightedly when he discovered a new kink of Eric's. And I loved seeing Zane through Eric's eyes--especially in the way that he appreciated all the ways that Zane makes him pause and appreciate life, embrace joy, and simply be himself.

Those moments make reading this story worth it. If you are a fan of the first book, you'll enjoying reading this follow-up. Recommended.

3.4 Stars.

It would have been 3 Stars, but I'm feeling generous. I liked this novella featuring Eric and Zane a few months before their wedding. What I didn't like was Eric's overwhelming doubts, insecurities, and low self-esteem when he compared himself to Zane. They're engaged for god's sake, shouldn't that provide a sense of security? When they meet Zane's old high school flame, Eric starts to believe that he doesn't deserve Zane. Dean, the old flame, is an ass to Eric. Things turn out right in the end, of course. It it felt like a big bandaid of a book to cover up Eric's boo boos.

This is definitely not a standalone and should be read after the first book in the series.

Eric and Zane are so sweet, I just love them! I'm so glad we got more to their story, even if I didn't realize how much I wanted it. And can I say I'm now greedy and still want more?!?
Eric was a little needy in this book but I love how caring and gentle Zane is with him, even when he's being insecure, and let's be honest- a little bit frustrating. But Zane never let him feel that way for too long- he was always there, making sure Er knew how much he loved him, and that he was the only one for him.
They have such a special bond, developed through years of friendship, that even the appearance of an old "friend" can't break them.
Gosh these boys are so freaking sweet! I love Zane's dominance and the way Eric loves him. The way they love each other just makes me feel all happy inside.

A second part I didn’t know I needed

I all sorts of loved this book. Leaning into Always is the second part of Zane and Eric’s love story, which began in Leaning into Love. If I’m being honest, I didn’t necessarily think Leaning into Love was incomplete. I know many readers aren’t fans of happy-for-now endings, so I figured Leaning into Always would serve as a nice cap for those readers. For me, I assumed it was just more time with a couple I enjoyed. I’ll admit I was wrong. There was plenty more story to share and I ended up liking the second part of Zane and Eric’s romance even more than their sweet start. Although this is billed as a continuation, I do think it could be read as a standalone. There’s a brief summary of the major players and the continuing story arc that could sufficiently get new readers up to speed.

In Leaning into Love it was no secret that Eric still struggled with insecurities held over from high school. These anxieties once again rise to the surface as Zane and Eric plan their wedding and prepare to embark on a life together, especially once Zane’s ex enters the picture. While this conflict of the “nerdy” character getting the “popular” character isn’t anything new in the romance genre, I loved the way the author handles it. Things aren’t blown out of proportion, there’s no massive miscommunication lading to a break-up, etc. Rather, readers are treated to seeing these two best friends work through their issues by talking and being up front about their concerns and feelings. While some of Eric’s reactions are admittedly a bit immature, Miss Hayes balanced those moments with mature and honest conversations. Simple, yes, but it was a refreshing angle on a common conflict and reaffirmed the obvious connection and deep love between Zane and Eric.

As always, this author’s smooth writing style and well-developed characters pulled me in. The flow between narrative and dialogue made for a seamless read that was difficult to put down. I can always rely on Miss Hayes to deliver characters I like and a love story that warms my heart. What I didn’t realize is she could increase my love for a couple, but that’s precisely what happened. I finished Leaning into Love really liking Zane and Eric, but Leaning into Always made me fall head over heels for this couple. If you needed more from Leaning into Love, here’s your chance. If you’re new to this couple or series, don’t pass this one by.

Zane and Eric are going strong and still so much in love. They are busy with life, their careers and, of course, planning a wedding. After a return trip to their hometown, Zane accepts the task of finding a vessel for a client, and this brings Zane's high school friend and old flame, Dean, back into their lives. Eric is suspicious of Dean's intentions from the beginning, but Zane doesn't see a problem. This begins to cause a rift between the lovers, and causes Eric to feel once again like the insecure person he thought he'd left behind when he left home for good and headed off to college.

First things first!! I absolutely hated Dean. He was a complete and utter asshat!! I just wanted to throw him off the yacht and send him out to sea. Phew! Okay, on to my review!

I know many dislike reading the continuation of a story featuring an established couple that contains conflict. For me, yes, it's frustrating to have an author cause heartache for a couple that you love, especially ones you thought had a rock solid relationship, but it makes them much more realistic. Life and relationships aren't perfect and it takes hard work, comprise, trust and, of course lots of love to make them work and Eric and Zane have all that in spades, so I wasn't too worried about them.

I fell in love with Eric and Zane when I first met them in Leaning into Love, so I was thrilled that Lane was extending their story. She managed to recapture the love and passion between Zane and Eric. The chemistry between them was as explosive as ever and it practically comes off the pages at you. And the sex was off the charts hot!

This was a great addition to Zane and Eric's story and to the series, as well. It's well-written, paced well and filled with emotion. It was enjoyable and definitely recommendable, in fact, pick up the whole series, it's amazing and you won't be disappointed!

Read it while it is on KU. Not really necessary unless these characters are a must for you. And even then, Eric is a little hard to read in this one. Okay, you should read it because Eric and Zane are all kinds of hot with each other.
Though this book did make me want to reread Book 1 and 2. Book 2 because of Nick.
Book 1 because I don't remember Eric being this insecure and having this many doubts? I could be remembering wrong though since it is so prominent in this storyline - how could I forget that personality trait?
One thing that really annoyed me in this book is when one MC discounts the other's concerns. It just annoys me. I don't care if you think their concern is unfounded, if you are committed and the other person's feelings are important - you will make their concern a priority.

All that said, I can't wait for the next book in the series, which is teased at the end of this book - Josh's book! Yay!

4.5⭐️ I am so glad I picked up this first time author!! She has a flow of writing I love!! I know I’ll be reading all of her books, especially in between those heavy emotional books I’m drawn to.😀

🌈LOVE sexy guys Zane & Eric! They are perfect together! And I loved watching their relationship grow from (longtime) friends to lovers.

Eric’s thoughts…and the perfect way to describe Zane!!🤤

“This was real. This man, this moment. And he had a delicious way of reminding me of what was truly important. All I had to do was lean in.”

I must say that Dean is a big jerk! I enjoyed when hunky Zane kicked his ignorant butt to the curb!

Eric and Zane have incredible, funny banter which brought many laughs! And they also have some hot banter too!💥💥Their chemistry in and out of bed flew off the pages!! 🔥

🎧 Highly recommend listening to this series…the narrator, Seth Clayton was phenomenal…heading to book 3! 🌈❤️
