Kristin is on the run. From her life. From herself.
When two murders take place in Chicago, Kristin quickly finds herself a prime suspect. The problem is she can't be sure of what she did or didn't do.
DID THEY MAKE ME DO IT...
In fear for her life, Kristin flees abroad to start her life over. But it's not that easy to escape the past. And whatever she's done, someone is on her tail, wanting her to pay. The question is: could she be a killer and not even remember?
Page-turning, gripping, dark, and utterly addictive, this is one thriller that you won’t be able to put down. Perfect for fans of Cara Hunter, Mark Edwards, Caroline England.
Born in Sweden, Jessica moved to London before her career in publishing, editing and PR took her to the USA and the Middle East. Having also completed her Masters in Creative Writing and taught journalism to undergraduate students, writing is her true passion. Jessica won a Montegrappa First Fiction Award at the Emirates Festival of Literature in 2016, catching the eye of her agent Luigi Bonomi. Having since secured a multiple book deal, Jessica, known by friends to be infectiously positive, balances her time between her writing and her growing young family.
What Did I Do? by Jessica Jarlvi is one of those books that the cover just screamed read me when I saw it and having read another book by the author it wasn't a hard choice to pick this one up. Jessica's first book When I Wake Up was one that I remember being easily pulled into so I was hoping for more of the same, unfortunately that wasn't the case this time.
The story in here is told from multiple points of view including an unknown voice and varying timelines in the beginning. Sometimes this type of set up is one that works wonderfully and others not so much. This time was definitely a not so much example because everything seemed to be so scattered and disconnected it can be easily confusing and hard for readers to connect to.
Kristin was a character that seemed to be hiding from her past and on the run with a new boyfriend in Sweden. She jumpy and skittish so we know that there is something in her past that she's avoiding. Unknown phone callers and glimpses of things that make her think she's been found have her on edge. Meanwhile Frank has lost a son and is searching his missing daughter, Sophia. And then an unknown female is forced into prostitution and desperate to escape.
The question for the reader becomes how do all of these varying stories connect and will they all tie together by the end. The problem though is maintaining interest to make any sort of ending actually exciting by the time it comes and for me that is where it failed. Hopefully though in the author's next attempt her book will go back to the instantly engaging type of story I'd found in the first.

WHAT DID I DO? Written by Jessica Jarlvi MAY 1st, 2018; Aria (420 Pages) Genre: fiction, mystery, suspense, contemporary, Sweden
RATING: 2.5 STARS
I really enjoyed Jarlvi's first novel, When I Wake Up, so I was excited to see another book being published this year. On the whole, I enjoyed the book, but I found it hard to always stay on track with who was speaking. There were moments, especially towards the end, that plot points seemed to be forced in order to make all the pieces fit. It did keep me reading to see where it would all end up.
***I received an eARC from the PUBLISHER via NETGALLEY***
This was a strange book. I enjoyed the story but it did jump around between characters and time quite a lot which did get confusing.
The story of a women who flees the states after her husband dies, harbouring many secrets. She i not really sure what the truth is and is running and hiding from it.
Thanks to Aria and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read in exchange for my honest opinions
I was drawn to the cover of this book and thought for sure i would love it. I had a really tough time following this story. There are so many characters to keep track of that i was easily confused and i just could not connect to any of them. DNF at 33%. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this complimentary book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Can’t seem to stay out of Sweden lately, literally as in books. Then again I really liked Jarlvi’s debut When I Wake Up, so I would have checked this book out irrespective of geography. So here I am, the first person reviewing it for GR. Woohoo and all that. What Did I Do wasn’t a sophomore slump per se, though I did like it less. The story has to do with a young woman from a well to do and supremely messed up family, in fact every existing member of her family suspects her of various crime, including murder. Naturally she flees them and the country, coming back to her native Sweden, but like an odious smell they follow, weaving their webs and plotting their traps. But you don’t really get to know all of it, Jarvi weaves her own web quite cleverly, dispensing tantalizingly small amounts of information in alternating perspective chapters, so that you’re left to try to figure out what exactly is going on. And you do figure it out, but slowly enough to satisfy a proper suspense fan. So, yeah, it’s trickery, but at least that way you get to be surprised by the prerequisite twist ending. It is somewhat melodramatic though, particularly the soap opera worthy denouement, but it’s an enjoyable enough trip to get there. Jarlvi’s clipped sentences occasionally take the dispassionate Scandinavian writing to new levels of indifference, but the narrative becomes considerably more engaging from about midway on. The main protagonist, the did she or didn’t she star of the show, has OCD, which was a nice addition and depicted well and reasonably, not exploited for a plot driver or comic asides. Majority of the characters were quite despicable, but then again they were trapped by their own obsessions and lack of moral centers. This turned out to be a fun murder mystery suspense thriller story with all the genre accoutrements, nothing special, but it does succeed at drawing the reader in, plenty entertaining and a quick read. Thanks Netgalley.
I read the synopsis of this book and I was immediately intrigued. I just knew that this was one book that I needed to read. I haven’t read Jessica Jarlvi’s previous book called ‘When I Wake Up’, which was released last year. I just love discovering new writers and so it was with some excitement that I picked up my Kindle and started to read ‘What Did I Do?’. I really enjoyed it but more about that in a bit. Kristin is a bit of a funny old fish. It isn’t long until we find out that her husband and her brother are dead- possibly in suspicious circumstances. Kristin was at the scene but she can’t remember if she was the one responsible for their deaths. Instead of sticking around and trying to assist the police in their investigation, Kristin receives a hefty life insurance policy and does a bunk to Sweden. In effect she goes on the run with her boyfriend. To me the fact that she has took off has made her look guilty. I did wonder if she had post traumatic amnesia or whether it was a case of selective amnesia and she wasn’t remembering because she didn’t want to. I can’t say that I really took to Kristin and I remained suspicious of her throughout the book. Her move to Sweden is supposed to be a ‘new start’ but there is trouble on the horizon for Kristin. Somebody knows where she has gone and is on her tail. This somebody will not let Kristin forget about what happened. There appear to be a lot of ‘coincidences’ where Kristin is concerned. She was present at the scene of her husband’s and her brother’s deaths and she was also around when her mother was pushed down the stairs and was left crippled. Kristin either had a hand in all three incidences or somebody is cleverly trying to frame her for all three ‘incidents’. So the main question has to be did was Kristin responsible for all three incidences? Is Kristin in danger? What is the truth? Well for the answers to those questions and more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you. ‘What Did I Do?’ is one of those books that kept me guessing throughout. I wasn’t sure who or what to believe. I didn’t take to Kristin and because I didn’t feel a connection with her, I wasn’t really bothered what happened to her. I did become addicted to reading ‘What Did I Do?’ and because I needed to know how the story ended, I kept reading on and on. Throughout the book I found myself changing my opinions as to who was guilty and what really had happened. This was one book that really did mess with my head. Reading this book was much like riding on an unpredictable rollercoaster with lots of twists, turns and moments that make your heart rate increase in anticipation of what lies in store. The story is told from the point of view of different named characters and there are chapters that are written by an anonymous character. I wasn’t sure how this way of telling the story would work but I need not have worried, because the chapters interlink and the story flows well as a result. In conclusion, I did enjoy reading this book and it certainly messed with my head. I would recommend this book and this author to other readers but in particular to those fans of psychological thrillers. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a well deserved 4* out of 5*.
Thank You to Netgalley and Aria publishing for giving me a copy of this great book.
5 Stars.
Just "WOW" What an amazing read this is. its a very dark and powerful Psychological Suspense which kept me on my toes. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and did not expect the outcome.
I think this is one to read if you are a fan of Mark Edwards. I would highly recommend this.
Well Done Jessica Jarlvi I am very impressed with this book. I didn't know what to expect as I haven't read your other book, but if it is anything like this one I shall keep an eye out for a copy and hopefully read it when my huge list of books goes down!!
This is another cracker from Ms Jarlvi. I had high expectation after reading the debut and entered into this book gingerly - could it possibly be as good? Well, yes, it's every bit as good and maybe even better. The story weaves over and back through time, taking in both sides of the Atlantic and brings us to the last place you expect. Another triumph - no pressure, but... more please!
Twisted, knotted, complicated in the extreme .. this is a completely confusing read - and I LOVED it!!
Three quarters of this book consists of intertwining tales from different characters; it's quite difficult at times to work out what the relationships, if any, are between the characters and deciding who is who. The revelations all come in the last 25% and they are well worth waiting for. Without reading all that goes before, none of it would be as exciting or as unexpected. I did manage to work out the part of one of the characters - unusually for me, I got that one right! As for the rest? Nope, didn't see any of it, but boy was it worth reading!
This is a novel full of secrets .. secret pasts, secrets present but as the saying goes, be sure your sins will find you out. I do enjoy a book where it all comes out in the wash and no unanswered questions are left to niggle at me, and this is exactly that. Full respect to Jessica Jarlvi. How she managed to sleep whilst working out this plot defeats me. It is a sensational novel the likes of which I have never come across before, and I recommend it to everyone who despairs of formulaic reads. I promise, you haven't read anything like this before!
My grateful thanks to publishers Aria for pre-approving my request via NetGalley. This is my honest, original and unbiased review.
I was over the moon when I heard I was going to be reviewing What Did I Do by Jessica Jarlvi. Jessica’s previous book When I Wake Up was a real reading highlight for me in 2017. I started and finished When I Wake Up in one go.
We meet a whole host of different characters and at first, I found it quite confusing and I kept trying to connect the dots and I got frustrated. So, I gave in and just relaxed into the book and went on the journey. Jessica is an excellent story weaver, giving you just enough information then changing your thoughts in another direction.
We travel from Chicago to Sweden in the book and we flip flop from past to present day. Jessica drip feeding us the key clue jigsaw pieces of the story. It’s extremely fast-paced and what I thought was going to happen didn’t, so I was really pleased that the ending shocked me, and I was surprised.
It was refreshing not to know what would happen and in the end, I really didn’t like any of the characters this time around but sometimes that makes for a better book.
Jessica has a knack for making you feel all snug and comfortable, then she smacks you around the head with a plot twist that leaves you shocked and unsettled.
I was immediately attracted by the cover of this book, we see Kristin face half hidden by the hair. One sentence sums up the book a lot: "She remembers killing someone, wouldn't she?"
It all starts when two murders occur in Chicago, Kristin finds himself quickly at the center of this case. Except that she does not remember what she did or did not do. With a life insurance payment, she escapes to Sweden to start from scratch. But escaping her past is not as easy as she believes. Whatever she's doing, someone is watching her.
A captivating story full of twists with the endearing character of Kristin. We immediately want to know if she has committed or not her two crimes. I loved this book so much that I bought his first novel when i wake up.
Reading this book is like being on a rollercoaster, with lots of twists and turns, leaving you breathless and wanting more. It is told by different characters and sometimes difficult to follow, but please stick with it, it is definitely worth it! The main character is Kristen, who is on the run after her husband and brother in law are found dead in suspicious circumstances. This is a book that will keep you guessing throughout, who or what to believe. A great read. Thanks to NetGalley and Aria for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
I had a really hard time staying engaged with this story. Based on the description, I really thought I'd enjoy it. I wanted to, but it just didn't live up to my expectations. The number of characters made it challenging to follow at times, and it was hard to feel a real connection to any of the characters.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.
The title of the book, What Did I Do? plainly sets the plot. Her husband is dead. Her brother is dead. She is responsible, isn't she? Oh, and her mother has been crippled by being pushed down the stairs. She was there on all three occasions. She did it, didn’t she? Why doesn’t she clearly remember? I was curious from page one. I kept wondering had she actually done these criminal acts. Beyond the obvious questions, there were things about Kristin that kept me reading this book.
Meanwhile, there are other stories, other characters, and these include memories that are intriguingly connected. They are extremely mysterious. What do these other stories have to do with Kristin? Not only is she haunted by unclear memories, she is being stalked by someone. Her new life, such as it is, could be ruined forever. All Kristen wanted was a new beginning, yet that seems highly unlikely for her.
I found this dark psychological thriller to be truly captivating. After all, was I rooting for a murderer? The twists and turns in What Did I Do? will definitely throw you off! That is how well-written this book by Jessica Jarlvi is! She is definitely an author to watch.
Frank and Birgitta’s family consists of two boys, Peter and Anders, the youngest at 19, and Kristin, their only daughter. Peter has already flown the nest and Kristin is nowhere to be found. The novel starts with a Prologue which, frankly, in my opinion, adds little to the reader’s understanding, and a call to the parents to say that Anders has had an accident. Just why that call had to interrupt a sex session is beyond me. Maybe the author felt it added a bit of spice to the opening paragraphs.
The plot continues with each chapter written from the POV of one of the characters. This format can work well but was rather confusing as actions which occurred in one chapter then often occurred again in a subsequent chapter written from the viewpoint of another character. In fact, the timelines jumping around were a feature of the whole book and continued to confuse throughout its entire length.
The whole family in one way or another ends up in Sweden where most of the action then takes place although the focus tends to centre around Kristin as the main character – certainly she is the one to whom most things happen. Frank is obsessed with finding Kristin. Both he and his wife have had successful careers in the States so money is no object. We don’t hear how this money has been made but they led a luxurious life and have time on their hands to follow their interests.
The writing style flowed well but the actual plot and relationships between the characters were difficult to determine. In fact, I tried to develop a chart of who knows who and in which country but that wasn’t helpful either. In short, I didn’t enjoy the book. It had the feeling of not having been thought through properly and in need of tidying up and knocking into shape. The denouement was almost a splurge of information and revealed everything in a few pages. I didn’t guess the ending probably because there were no clues as to the main perpetrator. (And having re-read the Prologue after finishing the book. In my opinion, it still does not make sense or in any way contribute to the reader’s knowledge or understanding).

Breakaway Reviewers received a copy of the book to review
Firstly, the book cover is everything I look for when seeking out my next thriller read. Sleek design, punchy title and intriguing tagline. What Did I Do? was totally my bag.
The location switch from Chicago to a small town in Sweden seemed a unique choice, but the stark Swedish undertones definitely added to the building tensions of the plotlines, of which there are many. With what Did I Do? YOu need to be prepared to concentrate.
I did have to flick back through the pages a couple of times and re-read paragraphs to make sure I was reading about the person I thought I was. This was made a little more confusing by the italicised chapters of an unknown woman. However, as the secrets reveal themselves (no spoilers here!) I began to realise that this was probably intentional by the author to convey Kristen’s fractured memory and delicate mental state.
When I Wake Up. A psychological thriller by Jessica Jarlvi The plot twist was a hell of one! I didn’t see it coming at all and had to sit for a while to put all the pieces together in my head and I was still thinking about it a couple of days later. If a book gets that deep into your head, the writer is doing something right. Jessica Jarlvi certainly has a talent for writing sharp, dark thrillers.
What Did I Do? is a complex, tightly knotted psychological thriller which kept me intrigued to the very end. If you like multiple storyline threads and a book that makes you concentrate rather than switch off, this is the thriller for you. Ideal for fans of Sara Foster books and The Silent Patient.
Dark, intense and plot twists galore Jessica Jarlvi’s new novel What Did I Do? is not one to be missed. Utterly gripping throughout this was a book I adored. Split between three narratives it did take a while to settle into this book, but once I was I was desperate to know how these three very different tales were linked. Firstly, with have Kirsten whose husband has died from poisoning in mysterious circumstances, she knows she’s a suspect, but nobody can prove anything, or can they? With her husband’s life insurance money, she heads off to Sweden to start a new life. Then we have Frank, married to Birgitta in a seemingly happy marriage until their son Anders is found dead, was it and accident or was it murder? The third narrative comes from an unknown female who has got herself in a difficult situation. As the story unfolds these three very different stories begin to connect as the author gives us subtle clues linking them all. I absolutely loved these and trying to work everything out, when it all blows up at the end and is explained I was shocked, it was utterly brilliant. This is a fantastic novel full of secre3ts, lies and coincidences which build up to an amazing ending. It’s a book quite unlike anything I’ve read before and for that I cannot wait for Jessica Jarlvi to write more as this new to me author definitely hit the spot. Thank you so much to Aria for sending me a copy to review and for inviting me on the blog tour.
This review is for the Kindle edition - which I read via the Kindle direct. 'What DId I Do' by Jessica Jalvi is a book that follows the trials of a young woman who has issues, among them OCD, and who has a strained relationship with her overbearing parents. The characters are really interesting and I liked the dynamic between the family members and I was never sure until the end who was up to what. The timelines shift around a bit, indicated by a change of script from normal font to italic, but these changes were well handled and I was never confused as to where I was or when. The story delves into the murky world were young women are seduced and manipulated into becoming high class sex slaves and I found this part of the story credible and engrossing. I felt for the female lead, Kristin struggling with the notion that she may have killed. The story shifts between the US and Sweden, which was well presented and never intruded on the action. The plot was well planned and executed and I never felt that there was any padding of waffle. I looked forward to going to bed each night to read more and found myself on a number of occasions not wanting to put the book down and throughout it was a page turner. The ending was well paced and not quite what I expected. I liked the easy style of writing, nothing too heavy or complex but as a thrilling, entertainment it ticks all the boxes. Highly recommended.
Although I was extremely tempted to give this 5 Stars, I was let down by the epilogue... half of the epilogue is the beginning of the book and it was like ‘meh’. The actually ending of the storyline itself was actually quite intense. I knew there was something fishy with the ‘specific’ character but I never guessed everything revolves around them, that’s for sure.
The writing style is most definitely the most gripping part of this book. The author certainly has the gift of the writing and knows how to manipulate her readers.
It’s gripping and gritty, dark and intense; you’ll find yourselves thrown completely off the map in places and you’ll also feel quite confused with the character changes in each chapter and who is who. Also, I have no idea how to pronounce ‘Birgitta’... I spent the majority of the book stressing on over the pronunciation and it was irritating. It’s great to finally read a psychological thriller book that’s not set in the UK! This is a mix between America and Sweden, though more on the Sweden side.
I’m a little confused with the ending and with what Peter really thinks as it wasn’t well defined and left me with a tonne of questions.
Great read; be prepared to pour your heart and soul, and all your brain cells, into reading this book.
What did I do? is a great title for this did she, didn't she thriller. The cover screamed read me and despite seeing a few negative reviews I plunged in and on the whole I am glad I did. At the start I have to admit I did struggle, there seemed to be quite a few characters all very different with different lives but somehow all connected or not?? As I started to separate the different characters in my head and the timeline they appeared I started to love this book. The main character is Kristen but her parents also have a large part. Kristen was a likeable character with a complex character that at the start you do wonder why the hell she is like she is but towards the end everything clicks into place and although I was barking up the wrong tree, I loved that I was led there and when everything comes to light it all clicks together very well. This is not a beach read this a read where to some degree you do have to concentrate on whose who, when, where and why but do not let this deter you from giving this a try as the ending wasn't what I had expected. I would like to thank Netgalley and Aria for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.
What a sinister, disturbing and fantastic read. Lock your door, switch off your phone and buckle in for a great ride. What Did I Do? is told from the viewpoints of a number of characters. Kristin is on the run and is hiding out in Sweden. She may or may not have killed someone. Frank is mourning the loss of his youngest son who drowned in a lake and the disappearance of his daughter Sofia and his other son Peter. An initially unnamed young woman is in love with her ‘upper class’ boyfriend but is being drawn to a charismatic man she meets as she works as a waitress. Gabriella is a sculptor living in the grounds of a house which Frank and his wife Birgitta have just moved to on their relocation from the USA to Sweden.
The novel moves from action in the USA to Sweden and back. You gradually begin to see how all the characters intertwine with each other and what secrets they hold.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley and publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you.
Multiple characters provide tantalising snippets of information in this psychological thriller. Set in Chicago and Sweden, this story has the pacing and sinister elements of a Scandinavian thriller.
All the characters have psychological issues, which makes finding the antagonist difficult. I did work out most the plot before the end, but there were a couple of surprises. What stands out in this story is the unmitigated evil of the antagonist, who is the puppeteer, while all the other characters are puppets to some degree, although few are entirely blameless.
The story's pace is slow and won't appeal to everyone, but if you like Scandinavian thrillers this has all the essential requirements.
I received a copy of this book from Aria via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I reviewed What did I do? as an ARC free from net galley in return for an honest review.
The first half of this book was actually quite hard to read, the time line is off, you have no idea what's happening, and I had no idea who was who in the narratives. In time this does fall into place but I had to push myself to read on. In the second half of the book I thought I knew who was behind it but I soon changed my mind and guessed before the big reveal.
I enjoyed the story but feel that it dragged in places and yet lacked detail in others. I liked the crime and the suspense but failed to connect with any of the characters.
Widowed Kirsty flees Chicago for Sweden, soon after the death of her husband. She is set up with an insurance payout in order to start her new life.
She is tormented by phone calls and has flashbacks and nightmares about terrible things happening to family members. She starts to wonder if she is losing her mind.
I found this book difficult to concentrate on as the author went back and forwards with too many characters. My apologies for not leaving a detailed review.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are all my own and completely unbiased. My thanks to NetGalley for this opportunity.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in return for my honest opinion.
First of all, I did enjoy this book, it was so suspenseful once it go going. It was also so confusing at first; for the first third of the book, I had a hard time keeping track of the characters and who was who, almost thought I would have to make a chart. Then, the dots stared to be connected and I was surprised and horrified all at once. Great story, with a surprising ending, which I figured out way later than I would like to admit.
I will definitely be checking out more books by this author.
This book starts in a rather confusing manner: rather a lot of chapters introducing a different character in different settings and different time frames. It takes quite some commitment to stick with Kristen who fleas to Sweden after finding herself a person of interest following the death of her brother and husband. Despite compelling motives, she keeps asking herself if she's capable of murder. She can't actually remember...
Despite a promising new start in Sweden, her past starts to catch up with her in quite an unexpected manner.
It’s quite a relief when you start to join the dots, but this author doesn’t make it very smooth. It’s a little clumsy and it’s hard to connect with any of the characters.
The editing was a little ragged in places and I was rather shocked that an editor, copy editor and proofreader had missed some howling grammatical errors.
However, once the pieces started to fall into place, I did find myself quite immersed in the book and eager to discover how it would end.
Kristen is on the run and trying to start a new life away from all the drama in America. She's leaving a dead brother and husband behind. People believe she killed them but did she, is she even sure herself what she did. The big question though just who is she running away from.
Wow there were some twists in this making it a good story but it did take some following though. It took a while to get into the story and understand just who everyone was but once I did it got better. It does jump around a lot too. The ending was good and I liked the conclusion to the story.
With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the book in exchange for an honest review. I read a small part of this book and then left it for a month or so then decided to carry on reading it. Whilst the plot or idea of the book was a clever one, it really ended far too complicated and there were far too many name changes for the story to have any cohesion or fluidity. The daughter thought she was responsible for the death of her abusive husband and fled to Sweden to start again. Then her parents also left America and moved to Sweden to find her. It wasn’t a book I could recommend.
I received an advance review copy of this book. All opinions are my own. Will keep you in its sweaty grip from the very beginning until the last page. Buckle up darlings because you are in for a bumpy ride. But what a great ride it's going to be. So yes absolutely pick up this book and be prepared to loose chunks of time because you will not be able to put this book down. Excellent, excellent story. Happy reading! #WhatDidIDo? #NetGalley
