After reading "Dungeon" I found myself wondering how many "unknown" books like this go unnoticed to wide audience of literature, how many books are underprivileged because they are coming from countries and languages which are not translated enough.. It is perhaps sometimes matter of luck, or coincidence, or if you wish personal obsession to come in touch with some works. An excellent book that I wouldn't have read if I didn't have a personal connection and empathy for Serbia.
This is one is set in Belgrade before, during and after WWII and revolves around Pavlovic family, especially Dusan and Milica, a professor-historian and art critic and a teacher of literature. The plot is not linear, goes back and forth in time from the 30's till 80's, and it is written like a form of text in which an old lady in her 80's writes down thoughts over her life and events over the years. So we are following the story of Pavlovic's family, which belonged to Serbian aristocracy, an extremely educated, elegant and great couple with all the privileges of that era, year by year over those dark times, found themselves in front of weird, difficult and uncomfortable situations. Dark times which bring them in front of ideologies, wondering if they have to remain faithful to their believing or to revise some or all of them, while we notice the fall of Serbian aristocracy, rise of Nazi's, madness of war, beginning of the communist era in Serbia. All these bring distance between them and the great couple of the past which received so much wide respect is now under disfavor while strong moral and ideologically dilemmas are so powerful and highlighted.
Svetlana Velmar Jankovic wrote a great story, a real story over those times, with strong political and historical background. Very powerful and the same time written in an elegant prose, portrays superbly a whole era while she tries in a uniquely way to approach art of era in general something I really enjoyed. And her hero, Milica, what a character.. a woman that any male would love to meet in life. Excellent reading, absolutely satisfying.
