Although he was ill-treated, he went through all of this. He never hated his mother for that. Throughout the book, you'll see how brilliant the writing style is. Don't worry. This has a happy ending.

After its release, many people thought this book is about the author himself. The author then confessed that 90% of the book was about him. And yes...his own mother.

I read this book for the first time when I was 12 years old and my dad bought it for me. My first reaction was, as expected, "WTF?" It did not make any sense to my 12 years old brain. Nevertheless, I was hooked. I did not know this at the time, but the presentation was beautiful, though sometimes inconsistent. I read it again this week and discovered a lot of new perspectives, starting with the life of lower-class citizens in colonial Rangoon, Burma. I found it to be very different from what I have been told as a kid in bedtime stories. The book captures the everyday lives, as well as the socioeconomic statuses elegantly. When you try reading the book as sort of a semi-fiction autobiography, as the author first said it was, it definitely offers you a very different perspective on said statuses.
